Heinz Tesar: Zusammenhänge und Vereinzelungen
Die Arbeiten Heinz Tesars bringen ein neues Niveau der Auseinandersetzung auf der Basis des traditionellen Architekturbegriffs. Spätestens seit dem Wiener Historismus zeigt die österreichische Architektur eine Tendenz zur Synthese scheinbar einander ausschließender Phänomene und Standpunkte, der psychologisierende Umgang mit Architektur benutzt ebenso wie die Architektur selbst den Doppelspiegel, also die Widerspiegelung der Spiegelung, wodurch ein für allemal, im gesellschaftlichen Kontext der Donaumonarchie, die Relativierung der Mittel vollzogen war. Nach Otto Wagner muß die Wiener Architektur sogar den Vorwurf "irritierender Kompromißbereitschaft“ hinnehmen. Sicher ist allerdings, um es positiv zu formulieren, daß sie auch später bornierter Einseitigkeit nicht mehr fähig war, und wie Josef Frank, Unduldsamkeit nur mehr gegenüber Unduldsamkeit und Ausschließlichkeit zeigt. Gemeinsam ist vielmehr, sogar bei so gegensätzlichen Positionen wie jenen von Loos oder Hoffmann, Welzenbacher oder Plischke, Holzmeister oder Rainer, ja der Arbeitsgruppe 4 oder Hollein, ein hochentwickeltes Sensorium für die Ambivalenz architektonischer Aussagen.
Ich denke, dass man Heinz Tesars Werk in einem Spannungsfeld sehen muss, das sich sehr früh zwischen ganz bestimmten Komponenten aufgebaut hat und das immer intensiver und fruchtbarer zu arbeiten begann. Was sind aber diese Komponenten? Modellhaft behauptet, vollzieht sich Tesars architektonische Artikulation gleichzeitig in drei Medien: Einmal in der Sprache mit eigenwilligen Begriffen, dann in der Zeichnung, in der auch Begriffliches verarbeitet und transformiert wird, und schließlich im eigentlichen Medium des Bauens, was den Bereich vom Modell bis zur konkreten Verwirklichung betrifft.

Heinz Tesar: Contexts and Isolations
The work of Heinz Tesar take engagement with the traditional concept of architecture to a new level. Since Vienna Historicism at t least, Austrian architecture has shown a tendency to blend phenomena and positions which are on the face of it mutually exclusive. As much as the architecture itself, the psychologising approach to architecture uses a double mirror, that is the reflection of the reflection, through which once and for all in the social context of the Danube monarchy the relativising of the means became complete. In the wake of Otto Wagner, Vienna architecture has even had to endure accusations of „an irritating readiness to compromise“. It is certain in any case, to put it positively, that in later years this architecture remained incapable of narrow-minded one-sidedness, and that it, like Josef Frank, showed intolerance only toward intolerance and exclusion. Rather, the common factor, even between positions as far apart as those of Loos and Hoffmann, Welzenbacher and Plischke, Holzmeister and Raine, or indeed Work Group 4, is a highly developed sense of ambivalence in architectonic statements.
In my opinion, Heinz Tesar’s work has to be seen in terms of a tension between the poles formed by distinct elements which established itself at an early stage and became ever more fertile and productive. But what are these elements? Typically, Tesar’s architectonic articulations progress in three different media simultaneously; in the medium of language through self-chosen expressions, in the medium of drawing, in which concepts are also revised and transformed by him, and finally in his own medium of building, from modelling to concrete realisation.

Die HFBK bietet mit dem Master ein Studium, in dessen Fokus ein von den Studierenden selbstbestimmtes künstlerisches und/oder wissenschaftliches Entwicklungsvorhaben steht. Dabei werden die Fragestellungen, Arbeitsmethoden und Arbeitsprozesse kritisch reflektiert, vertieft und differenziert.
Den Studierenden stehen Arbeitsplätze in den Studios zur Verfügung und sie werden von den Lehrenden in Einzel- und Gruppengesprächen intensiv in ihren Vorhaben betreut. Das wissenschaftliche Lehrangebot schärft ihr kritisches Reflexionsvermögen hinsichtlich der eigenen Fragestellungen, Methoden und Verfahren ebenso wie es weitergehende Forschungsvorhaben unterstützt. In Ausstellungsprojekten und Veranstaltungen innerhalb und außerhalb des Hochschulkontextes bilden die Studierenden einen professionellen Umgang mit Präsentationsformen und Distributionsverfahren aus. Zum Studienabschluss präsentieren sie einer größeren Öffentlichkeit ihre künstlerischen und/oder wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten, die begleitend in einer Publikation dokumentiert werden.
Die Studierenden vertiefen und differenzieren ihre künstlerischen und/oder wissenschaftlichen Kompetenzen. Sie entwickeln Arbeiten, deren experimenteller Charakter ästhetische Argumentationen, Aussagen und Intensitäten hervorbringt. Sie wissen sich gezielt handwerklicher Verfahren zu bedienen, mittels derer sie ihre künstlerischen Ideen exponieren, präzisieren und weiterentwickeln. Die Studierenden verfügen über weitreichende kunstgeschichtliche Kenntnisse und theoretische Begriffe, die ihnen eine Reflexion über den Status der eigenen Arbeiten ermöglichen und ihre künstlerische Produktivität inspirieren wie intensivieren. Studierende mit einem wissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkt sind in der Lage theoretische Probleme differenziert zu formulieren und argumentativ zu entfalten sowie Thesen oder Schlussfolgerungen herauszuarbeiten.

With the Master degree, the HFBK offers students a course of study centred around the student’s own planned artistic and/or scientific development, allowing issues of interest, working methods and processes to be critically analysed, deepened and to become differentiated.
Students will have access to workplaces in studios. They will be intensively supported by tutors in developing their projects, through individual and group discussions. The scientific studies on offer will sharpen their ability for critical reflection with regard to their own artistic issues, methods and ways of working, as well as supporting ongoing research projects. Exhibition projects and events within and outside the university context will educate the students in dealing professionally with forms of presentation and with processes of distribution. On completing their degree, students will present their artistic and/or scientific work, which will also be documented in an accompanying publication, in front of a large audience.
Students will be able to deepen and differentiate their artistic and/or scientific abilities. They will be able to develop work which is experimental in a way which emphasises the aesthetic arguments behind the work, the statement it makes and its strengths. They will be able to gain skills in appropriate craft processes which will enable them to express, refine and further develop their artistic ideas. Students will gain extensive knowledge of the history of art and theoretical concepts which will enable them to analyse and determine the state of development of their own artistic work and both increase and enhance their artistic productivity. Students taking a scientific subject will also learn to formulate theoretical problems, to develop an argument which traces their implications, and arrive at a conclusion or thesis.
The normal amount of time needed to complete this degree is 4 semesters.

Personal
Die Abt. Kunstbesitz besteht unverändert seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre aus drei Stellen. Aufgrund des gestiegenen Betreuungs- und Verwaltungsaufwands muss die Abteilung oft auf die flexible oder projektbasierte Unterstützung von externen Mitarbeitern zurückgreifen.
Ausstellungen, Besucher, Führungen
Der Kunstbesitz hat seit 2001 ca. 50 Ausstellungen durchgeführt mit zusammen rund 600.000 Besuchern. Es wurden in diesem Kontext rund 200 Führungen angeboten.
Berlin: ca. 20 Ausstellungen, Welttournee bislang 7 Stationen, Möhringen 15, Sindelfingen 4, sowie Ausstellungen im Werk Wörth, für MB USA usw. Die aktive Ausstellungspolitik hat zu einer deutlichen Wertsteigerung der Sammlungsbestände geführt.
Zum Vergleich: der Ausstellungsraum Haus Huth zählt pro Jahr ca. 30.000 Besucher, Etat ca. 200.000 €. Der Ausstellungsraum der Deutschen Bank, Unter den Linden Berlin, hat einen Etat von ca. 5 Mio. € zur Verfügung und zieht ca. 150.000 Besucher pro Jahr an.
Ausbildungsprogramme
Rund 30.000 junge Menschen haben in Karlsruhe, Detroit, Südafrika und Tokyo bislang am Education programme im Rahmen der Welttournee teilgenommen. Die „ABC Workbooks“ wurden den Schüler/innen als Arbeitsbasis zur Verfügung gestellt.
Hängungen intern
Seit 2001 sind im Rahmen von Neuhängungen im Unternehmen (öffentliche und Vorstandsbereiche, Betriebs- und Gästerestaurants) rund 1000 Werke umgehängt worden.
Kooperationen innerhalb DaimlerChrysler
Für verschiedene Teile des Unternehmens wurden komplexe Kunstkonzeptionen entwickelt: DC FS Detroit und Berlin, DC Bank, Niederlassung München, DC Schweiz, MB Museum u.a.
Außerdem: Zusammenarbeit bei der Vergabe von Kunstpreisen mit DC Foundation Japan, DC Südafrika, DCFS in Berlin und Farmington Hills.
Aktuelle Projekte in Kooperation mit DC Immobilien: Kunstkonzeption für das neue Bürogebäude UT für CC; Kunstkonzeption für ein neues Gebäude DC Russland.
Komplette Neuerfassung der Sammlung
Die rund 1.800 Werke von etwa 600 deutschen und internationalen Künstlern werden seit 2001 komplett neu erfasst, digitalisiert, in eine neue Datenbank übertragen, restauratorisch geprüft. Wir arbeiten auf dem Niveau großer Museen.
Publikationen
Bestände und Neuerwerbungen für die Sammlung wurden in rund 30 Publikationen sowohl den Mitarbeitern wie einer internationalen Öffentlichkeit kommuniziert.
Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit, Homepage
Zahlreiche international Presse- und Medienbeiträge spiegeln die weltweiten Aktivitäten der Sammlung DaimlerChrysler. Die seit 2001 komplett neu aufgebaute homepage (www.sammlung.daimlerchrysler.com) dokumentiert sämtliche Aktivitäten der Abt. Kunstbesitz und wird monatlich von ca. 30.000 Nutzern aufgerufen.
Erweiterung der Sammlung sollte Verpflichtung sein
a) weil nur eine aktive Sammlung, die internationale aktuellste Entwicklungen der Kunst integriert und kommuniziert, als lebendiges Moment der Kulturförderung wahrgenommen wird
b) weil der Erwerb junger Kunst – gerade auch, wie seit einigen Jahren der Fall, in Ländern wie Südafrika, Indien, Südamerika – als verantwortungsvolle Förderpolitik und Teil unserer Corporate Social Responsibility wahrgenommen und geschätzt wird. Mit einem Investitionsetat von derzeit 400 TEURO können wir ohnehin mit den Preisen im Bereich etablierter ‚Marktkunst’ nicht mehr mithalten.
c) weil die Integration junger Kunst aktuelle Trends in den Bereichen Ästhetik, Design, Wertebildung, Lifestyle als Diskussionsstoff in das Unternehmen einbringt
Fortführung der Ausstellungsaktivitäten sollte Verpflichtung sein
a) weil Ausstellungen – intern im Unternehmen, an einem zentralen Schauplatz der Kultur wie Berlin, in Museen international in Form der Welttournee – das wichtigste Medium der Kommunikation kulturellen Engagements nach innen wie nach außen darstellen. Eine Sammlung, die nicht in wechselnden Ausstellungskontexten diskutiert wird, ist totes Kapital
b) weil Ausstellungen maßgeblich zur Wertsteigerung beitragen
c) weil angesichts sinkender Kulturetats der DC Ländergesellschaften die Welttournee der Sammlung mit Education Programme sich als wichtiges Instrument kulturellen Engagements erwiesen hat
d) weil qualitätvolle und ideenreich kuratierte Ausstellungen – anders als kurzzeitige, kostenintensive Events – mit geringem Etateinsatz große und langfristige Wirkung erreichen können.

Personnel
The Corporate Art Department has consisted of three posts since the beginning of the 1990s. Due to increasing maintenance and administration costs, this department often has to rely on flexible or project-related support from colleagues working externally to it.
Exhibitions, Visitors, Tours
Since 2001, the Corporate Art Department has organised approximately 50 exhibitions, with approximately 600,000 visitors in total. About 200 guided tours were arranged in this context. Approx 20 exhibitions in Berlin, 7 on the world tour so far, 15 in Möhringen, 4 in Sindelfingen, in addition to exhibitions at the Wörth works, for MB USA and so on. An active policy with regard to exhibitions has significantly increased the value of the collection’s contents.
Comparison: the Haus Huth exhibition space totals 30,000 visitors per year and has a budget of approx. € 200,000. The exhibition space at the Unter den Linden branch of the Deutsche Bank in Berlin has a budget of approx. 5 million € and draws 150,000 visitors per year.
Education programme
So far, about 30,000 young people in Karlsruhe, Detroit, South Africa and Tokyo have taken part in the education programme in the context of the world tour. The “ABC Workbooks” were made available to students as a basis for their work.

Employees and the public worldwide are kept informed of the collection’s inventory and new acquisitions via approx. 30 publications.
Press and Public Relations, Homepage
Numerous articles in the international press and media reflect the worldwide activities of the DaimlerChrysler Art Collection: The homepage, completely redesigned in 2001 (www.sammlung.daimlerchrysler.com), documents all activities of the Corporate Art Department, and is accessed by approx 30,000 users per month.
Expanding the collection should be an obligation
a) because only an active collection which integrates and communicates the most recent international developments in art will be seen as a dynamic force supporting culture.
b) because the acquisition of new art – including and especially that of areas such as South Africa, India and South America, as has been the case for some years – is acknowledged and valued as a responsible policy for encouraging art and part of our Corporate Social Responsibility. With an investment budget presently standing at 400 TEURO we cannot in any case compete in the area of established “market art” with regard to prices.
c) because the integration of new art brings current trends in aesthetics, design, value systems and lifestyle into the company as subjects for discussion.
Continuation of exhibition activities should be an obligation
a) because exhibitions, within the company, in high-profile cultural venues like Berlin, in museums worldwide in the form of the world tour – represents the most important medium of communication of cultural engagement both internally and externally. A collection which is not discussed in a variety of exhibition contexts is dead capital.
b) because exhibitions contribute significantly to increase in value
c) because with regard to the dwindling culture budgets of the DC Land companies the world tours with their education programme have proven to be an important instrument of cultural engagement.
d) because exhibitions with high quality curating, rich in ideas – in contrast to short-term, cost-intensive events - can achieve a significant and long-term effect on a small budget.
