No one can say exactly what it looks like when a planet takes ill, but it probably looks a lot like Earth. Never mind what you’ve heard about global warming as a slow-motion emergency that would take decades to play out. Suddenly and unexpectedly, the crisis is upon us.
It certainly looked that way last week as the atmospheric bomb that was Cyclone Larry – a category 5 storm with wind bursts that reached 290 km/h – exploded through northeastern Australia. It certainly looked that way last year as curtains of fire and dust turned the skies of Indonesia orange, thanks to drought-fueled blazes sweeping the island nation. It certainly looks that way as sections of ice the size of small countries calve from the disintegrating Arctic and Antarctic. And it certainly looks that way as the sodden wreckage of New Orleans continues to molder, while the waters of the Atlantic gather themselves for a new hurricane season just two months away. Disasters have always been with us and surely always will be. But when they hit this hard and come this fast – when the emergency becomes commonplace – something has gone grievously wrong. That something is global warming.
The image of Earth as organism – famously dubbed Gaia by environmentalist James Lovelock – has probably been overworked, but that’s not to say the planet can’t behave like a living thing, and these days, it’s a living thing fighting a fever. From heat waves to storms to floods to fires to massive glacial melts, the global climate seems to be crashing around us. Scientists have been calling this shot for decades. This is precisely what they have been warning would happen if we continued pumping freenhouse gases into the atmosphere, trapping the heat that flows in from the sun and raising global temperatures.
Environmentalists and lawmakers spent years shouting at one another about whether the frim forecasts were true, but in the past five years or so, the serious debate has quietly ended. Global warming, even most skeptics have concluded, is the real deal, and human activity has been causing it [...]

Nessuno può veramente descrivere che aspetto abbia un pianeta quando si ammala, ma probabilmente assomiglia molto alla Terra. Dimenticate ciò che avete sentito dire sul riscaldamento globale, cioè di un’emergenza a rilento che impiegherebbe molti decenni prima che si metta in pratica, perché all’improvviso e inaspettatamente, la crisi ci è già piombata addosso.
E’ sembrato proprio così la settimana scorsa quando il ciclone Larry, una vera e propria bomba atmosferica - una tempesta di categoria 5 con raffiche di vento che raggiungevano i 200 km/h - si è scatenata lungo la costa nordorientale dell’Australia. E sicuramente sembrava così quando l’anno scorso, mentre cortine di fuoco e polvere trasformavano il cielo indonesiano color arancio, l’isola nazione veniva spazzata via da vampate alimentate dalla siccità. E la stessa impressione rimane mentre blocchi di ghiaccio, dalle dimensioni di piccole nazioni, si sfaldano dall’Artico e Antartico ormai in disintegrazione. Si può dire altrettanto, guardando ciò che rimane delle macerie grondanti di una New Orleans che continua a marcire, mentre le acque dell’Atlantico si raccolgono per una nuova stagione di uragani a distanza di soli 2 mesi. Le calamità naturali ci hanno sempre accompagnato e sicuramente continueranno ad accompagnarci, ma quando colpiscono così duramente e arrivano così rapidamente – quando situazioni di emergenza sono all’ordine del giorno - c’è qualcosa di tristemente sbagliato. E questo qualcosa, si chiama Riscaldamento Globale.
L’immagine della Terra come organismo – celebremente soprannominato Gaia dall’ambientalista James Lovelock – è stata logorata dallo sfruttamento, ma non per questo il pianeta non può essere considerato come un essere vivente, e di questi giorni, è un organismo vivente che combatte una febbre. Cominciando da ondate di caldo a tempeste, a innondazioni e incendi, a massicci volumi che si sciolgono, il clima globale sembra collassare intorno a noi. Per decenni gli scienziati hanno lanciato l’allarme. E’ precisamente ciò che ci avevano avvertito sarebbe successo se avessimo continuato a bombardare gas serra nell’atmosfera, intrappolando il calore emanato dal sole e di conseguenza aumentando la temperatura globale.
