Although the quartet has been making music since the 90s, they have only just released their debut album Tasankokaiku. Although Shogun Kunitoki sounds quite Japanese, the band is firmly based in the Finnish capital Helsinki.
Their songs sound like a kaleidoscope of 5 decades of electronic music, psychedelics and minimalism, and are influenced by 60s music by composers such as Steve Reich and Ennio Morricone. The result is strange yet familiar, groovy and melodic, electronic and human. Their pumping beats and layered songs are situated somewhere in between Tortoise and Apparat Organ Quartet, which makes them sound unique and fresh.
I’ve been waiting for this one for a while now, after hearing a sample a few months ago on the Fonal site I knew it was going to be good, being a shameless Goblin fan to hear a band emulating that sound while injecting it with some of the fun and lo-fi charm that Paavoharju made their trademark makes me weak at the knees. Thankfully the album lives up to my expectations and even exceeds them, seemingly blending a good proportion of my record collection into one easy to manage cd. There are splinters of Stereolab, bubbles of Broadcast, squeaks straight out of BBC Radiophonic experiments, the heart and soul of The Silver Apples and it’s all polished off with a smattering of Rick Wakeman for good measure.
I was beginning to think music of this calibre had died out completely, so thanks be to Fonal for resurrecting it again. Highly recommended. | Translation - Russian
Несмотря на то, что квартет занимается музыкой с 90-х годов, свой дебютный альбом "Tasankokaiku" они выпустили совсем недавно. Звучание "Shogun Kunitoki" характерно японское, но при этом группа обосновалась в столице Финляндии Хельсинки.
Их песни – словно калейдоскоп пяти десятилетий электронной музыки, психоделии и минимализма, в них чувствуется влияние музыки 60-х, музыки таких композиторов, как Стив Райх и Эннио Морриконе. В результате мы получаем нечто странное, но до боли знакомое, приятное и мелодичное, электронное и человеческое. Их многослойные песни с учащённым барабанным пульсом попадают куда-то между "Tortoise" и "Apparat Organ Quartet", что придаёт звучанию уникальность и свежесть.
Я уже ждал их появления, услышав несколько месяцев назад сэмпл на сайте Fonal, и я знал заранее, что это будет круто, будучи бескомпромиссным фаном Гоблина. Johnny R. came from a very wealthy familv. A family that is willing to award a great deal of wealth for
the return of his remains. Right now his body is being preserved on Venus, the planet of beautiful
women.
PROF. HESS
A planet of women who can reproduce without the use of men. Unfortunately, if more than three
generations go by without introducing new blood, the women become high-bred and even too
snippy for even themselves to stand. So it's necessary for them to keep a man around as a stud.
The women of Venus adopt an adolescent male from a well-to-do background, ride him like a wild
stallion, treat him like a king and love him until the day he dies, (usually at a ripe old age) and
then replace him with another adolescent male. Johnny R. had reached that ripe old age and the
time has come to replace him, but the women of Venus won't part with his body until an adequate
replacement has been delivered. The perfect replacement could be found on Jupiter.

Jupiter is a very wealthy mining planet, where infant males are taken and sold to a man named Lee
Vilensky. They're raised as workers and grow up to be strong men with no knowledge of women. Lee Vilensky owns Jupiter and years before he had purchased a boy from Samuel
Curtis known as, THE BOY WHO ACTUALLY SAW A WOMAN'S BREAST.
PIRATE
For this brief experience, the boy has been treated as a treasure. He's become the planet's figurehead
and is used to boost the morale of the workers by performing in great night rallies where he quickly and
arrogantly describes what it is he had seen.
PROF. HESS
Over the years, the boy has become a strong and handsome young man and both the Blueberry Pirate and Samuel Curtis know that the women of Venus would go nuts for him. They also believe that Lee Vilensky would part with the boy in trade for the real live girl.
PIRATE
He could raise her, marry her, have sex with her and then describe the experience to his workers in great detail.
SAMUEL CURTIS
That would be an incredible morale booster.
PIRATE
This would create a happier and more productive work environment.

Mouse on Mars
Mouse On Mars create densely layered tracks with the intended results being grounded between radical experimentalsism and timeless pop appeal. Designed to yield more with repeated listens, songs are minutely detailed. Drum tracks, for example, often contain over twenty different layers: live drums, programmed, digitally processed and various combinations and/or mutations of the aforementioned.
Fills and breaks are set, arranged, and placed individually as opposed to being looped. The results are rich, deep, wonderfully varied. Mouse On Mars' sound links them to the club-music scene, as do their many remixes and collaborations with members of the dance-music world.
Yet their association with the formalized and utilitarian world of dance music is ironic, as the band's raison d'etre is to place electronic flies in any aural ointment they choose to muck through. A series of 10 albums and numerous remixes has come off as primarily intent on dashing expectations, from the ambient-idm ectoplasms of 1994's Vulvaland and 1995's more structured Iaora Tahiti; to the flighty and funny electronics, spluttering horns and acoustic-guitar samples of 2000's more “organic” Niun Niggung; to the forest of sonic porcupine quills that is Idiology. Radical Connector (2004) further granulated the MoM aesthetic into nine vaguely poporiented songs, ever heavier on the beats and increasingly hinging the tunes on the vocals and drumming of longtime collaborator Dodo Nkishi.
Veering away from the vocal hooks of Radical Connector, the group's latest Varcharz is nine tracks (don't get confused by its stuttering track ID's) of catchy pop references, anarchic rock interpretations and manga-style pathos. Varcharz emerged partly from the sessions that produced 2004's kinetic dance party, Radical Connector, but reveals the harder and more experimental side of the group. For this album, Mouse on Mars digested a steady diet of spatial free-jazz and cocaine-fried booty funk to deliver an album reflecting their energetic live sets' sparkling chaos and glorious precision.
Andi Toma, Jan St. Werner and Dodo Nkishi have been more than busy in the intervening years between albums. As well as the release of their live record, Live04, on their own label Sonig, and a constant barrage of touring, Toma and Werner were collaborating with Mark E. Smith of The Fall as Von Südenfed. The trio gained worldwide success with their debut album "Tromatic Reflexxions". The Mom members produce independently for the Sonig label. St. Werner acted as the artistic director of the Amsterdam Institute for Electronic Music, STEIM and has also worked on two new solo records under the Lithops moniker.
