The trees grew so thickly and their foliage spread so widely that I could see nothing of the moon-light save that here and there the high branches made a tangled filigree against the starry sky. As the eyes became more used to the obscurity one learned that there were different degrees of darkness among the trees – that some were dimly visible, while between and among them there were coal-black shadowed patches, like the mouths of caves, from which I shrank in horror as I passed. I thought of the despairing yell of the tortured iguanodon – that dreadful cry which had echoed through the woods. I thought, too, of the glimpse I had in the light of Lord John's torch of that bloated, warty, blood-slavering muzzle. Even now I was on its hunting-ground. At any instant it might spring upon me from the shadows – this nameless and horrible monster. I stopped, and, picking a cartridge from my pocket, I opened the breech of my gun. Dear Miss Toldridge:—
As for the archaisms & inversions whose elimination I am advising– 1 really do not think you will miss them as much as you imagine. Certainly straightforward verse will soon come to feel like poetry to you; since the poetic essence is not a superficial thing of outward trappings, but a deeply-seated type of pattern & symbolic vision whose force is all the greater for simple & unbedizened formulation. So much more effective will you find this sincere way of writing, that in time it is the artificial & inverted sort of thing which you will consider ineffective & unpoetic. The revolt against artificiality of diction began very far back, but was slow in gaining headway. Wordsworth violently attacked the pseudo-classicism of r8th century verse, & made great headway against inversions. Indeed, despite the crop of new & still tawdrier affectations which Victorianism produced, we may still give the Victorian bards credit for improving on the Georgians in the one matter of inversions. In a numerical count, it is clear that Tennyson, Browning, Arnold, Morris, Swinburne &c. assay far fewer inversions per 100 lines than Addison, Pope, Young, Thomson, & Goldsmith. They undeniably came measurably closer—though not very close, alas—to the living speech of cultivated people. Another thing you will notice is that the sheer aesthetic instinct of the greater Victorians saved them from the most excessive affectations of their period. Even when artificialities were freely permitted, some inward prompting of sensitive taste prevented bards of the very first rank from overindulging in them beyond very moderate limits. To use a paradox, Tennyson was not half so Tennysonian as his lesser imitators! All that one needs to do to prove this point is to look over a volume of the really great Victorians—& then compare it with the inferior magazine verse of the same period. Beside the orgy of rococo affectation in the minor material, even Rossetti or Kingsley or Whittier or Longfellow sounds highly "modem" & straightforward. This really proves that inversion & artificiality form a basic & intrinsic weakness¬since it shews that really capable poets naturally & unconsciously react against such "licence" even when it is a popular & universally sanctioned custom. Artificial "poetic diction" is a direct departure from that spontaneous reflection of real life & feeling which constitutes true poetry. Essentially, it doesn't mean anything.
The final revolt against artificiality seems to have begun in those chaotic & transitional nineties when all extremes met. Some of the bards¬like Wilde & Dawson—clung rather belatedly to the outworn languors of the hothouse school, but Kipling was an immeasurably healthy influence in breaking the spell. Gradually we see that serious poets begin to drop the affected archaisms & inversions almost instinctively—before any formal critical precepts on the subject are formulated. Francis Thompson & A. E. Housman have very few. As the 20th century gains headway, we find the practice of straightforward diction conscious & triumphant, so that virtually no major work since 1910 has had any dominant idiom other than that of natural & living conversation. Textbooks now begin to enunciate the precept, & teachers caution their classes against the use of baroque phraseology—a very necessary caution, since of course the final change is of such recency that the bulk of the models in any curriculum must necessarily belong to the ages of artificiality. You can find an excellent summary of the whole thing in one of those convenient little five-cent Haldeman-Julius Blue Books—No. 514 —Clement Wood's Hints on Writing Poetry. I think that booklet would interest you—as would other booklets of the series. You ought to send to the Haldeman-Julius Co., Girard, Kansas, for a catalogue of their publications. Incidentally—the revision job I am doing now is on a splendid poetical handbook—a treatise on the appreciation of poetry— by a Wisconsin high-school teacher. You would undoubtedly enjoy it, & I shall probably be able to send you a complimentary copy when it is published. I never saw a clearer & more graphic study of the essence of poetry than this volume—which will be called Doorways to Poetry. The author, M. W. Moe, is one of my old "amateur journalistic" circle.

Pour ce qui est des archaïsmes et des inversions dont je préconisais le retrait… Je ne pense pas vraiment qu’ils vous manqueront autant que vous l’imaginez. Bientôt, j’en suis sûr, vous verrez que la poésie directe vous “semblera poétique” ; car l’essence de la poésie n’est pas une chose superficielle qui repose sur des ornements extérieurs, mais un type de schéma profondément enraciné & une vision symbolique dont la force est d’autant plus grande qu’on la formule simplement & sans tape-à-l’œil. Vous trouverez cette façon sincère d’écrire tellement plus efficace que vous en viendrez à considérer ce genre de choses artificielles aux tournures inversées comme étant maladroit & dépourvu de poésie. La révolte contre l’artificialité du style date d’il y a longtemps, mais elle n’a fait que peu de progrès. Wordsworth s’en est pris violemment au pseudoclassicisme de la poésie du XVIIIe siècle, & il a réalisé de nets progrès contre les inversions. En fait, malgré la profusion des nouvelles affectations si clinquantes que le victorianisme a produites, nous pouvons cependant créditer les poètes victoriens d’avoir apporté un progrès aux Géorgiens dans le domaine des inversions. Si l’on fait le compte, il est clair que Tennyson, Browning, Arnold, Morris, Swinburn & compagnie se hasardent à bien moins d’inversions par centaine de lignes qu’Addison, Pope, Young, Thomson & Goldsmith. Vous remarquerez aussi que le pur instinct esthétique des plus grands victoriens les a préservés des pires excès d’affectation de leur époque. Même lorsque le manque de naturel était tout à fait permis, un penchant inné pour le bon goût a empêché les poètes de tout premier ordre de s’y adonner au-delà de limites très modérées. Pour utiliser un paradoxe, disons que Tennyson n’était pas, et de loin, aussi tennysonien que ses moindres imitateurs ! À l’appui de cet argument, il n’y a qu’à regarder un volume des plus grands victoriens… et de le comparer avec la poésie de magazine de moindre qualité, datant de la même période. Mise à part l’orgie d’affectation rococo qu’on trouve dans les ouvrages mineurs, même Rossetti, Kingsley, Whittier ou Longfellow paraissent franchement “modernes” & directs. Il semblerait que la dernière révolte contre l’artificialité ait commencé durant ces années quatre-vingt-dix chaotiques & transitoires, lorsque tous les extrêmes se rejoignaient. Certains poètes – comme Wilde & Dawson – se sont attelés plutôt sur le tard aux langueurs périmées de la pépinière universitaire, mais Kipling fut une influence incommensurablement saine pour rompre le charme. Aujourd’hui, les livres scolaires commencent à énoncer le précepte, & les professeurs mettent leurs classes en garde contre l’emploi de la phraséologie baroque… un avertissement vraiment nécessaire, puisque le dernier changement est évidemment si récent que la plupart des modèles, quel que soit le programme scolaire concerné, appartiennent nécessairement aux époques de l’artificialité. Vous pouvez trouver un excellent résumé de tout ceci dans l’un de ces petits livres à cinq cents très pratiques, les Haldeman-Julius Blue Books – no 514 – Conseils pour écrire de la poésie, par Clement Woods. Je pense que ce manuel vous intéresserait… tout comme d’autres brochures de cette série. Vous devriez commander aux éditions Haldeman-Julius, à Girard, au Kansas, un catalogue de leurs publications à 5 ¢. À propos… le travail de révision que j’effectue actuellement concerne un splendide manuel de poésie… un traité sur la critique poétique par un professeur de lycée du Wisconsin. Nul doute que vous apprécieriez beaucoup cet ouvrage, & je pourrai sans doute vous envoyer un exemplaire à titre gracieux quand il sera publié. Je n’ai jamais vu une étude de l’essence poétique qui soit aussi claire & imagée que ce volume… le titre en sera Des portes ouvertes sur la poésie. L’auteur, M. W. Moe, est membre de ce bon vieux cercle de “journalisme amateur” dont je fais partie.
