communes viticoles traditionnelles. | Translation - English The Plague (war, Phylloxera)
A period of devastation by foreign armies, pillage, famine, and the plague, the 30 year war had catastrophic consequences on the region’s viticulture and economic activities.
When peace finally returned, the region’s wine activity slowly began to regain its former influence but the expansion of vineyards who planted low quality grape varietals in the lower plains, had a negative impact on the production in the region’s rolling hillsides.
The royal decree of 1731 attempted to rectify this situation, but it was met with little success. After the French Revolution wine cultivation covered more than 30,000 hectares of vineyards and a period of overproduction began to severely affect those vineyards on the region’s hillsides. A lack of exportation, the population’s growing preference for beer, diseases and Phylloxera, combined with the disquieting political situation of 1870 and 1918, only prolonged the region’s difficulties.
It was not until 1902 to 1948 that grape cultivation was reduced to 9,500 hectares. Today there is a total of 7,500 hectares referred to as Appellation Alsace.
The revival follows World War I
After the liberation of 1918, producers were to confront two economic tendencies – quality or quantity. Proponents of quality continued to produce a high quality wine made from typical grape varietals and this trend of “quality first” prevailed forcing producers to continue the cultivation of fine wines made from traditional and high quality grape varieties.
