ECO PSYCHOLOGY
In the beginning was ecology, a science, which begat deep ecology, a fuzzy edged philosophical attitude, which provoked, as a reaction, social ecology, a rigorous political protest tending to anarchism. All the while, unnoticed, "new economics" was growing up, elaborating Green alternatives to growth mania but unable to prevent God is green religion from becoming a growth industry on its own. And now something new again: eco psychology.
This latest piece in the jigsaw doesn't spring from the consulting room of a Green post Freudian post everything analyst but from Theodore Roszak, historian of 1960s counterculture (he coined the word), novelist, and the most cerebral of the romantic American eco prophets. He launches what could be the ultimate Green discipline, impinging by definition on all the others.
There is no mental health in our cities until we reawaken our psychic links with nature, Roszak argues, suggesting that our very earliest subconscious awareness is about such ties, which are deeper even than our much explored relationship with our mothers. Pre scientific people knew and felt this; to be healthy we must learn again to be as intimately aware of trees and mountains and animals as we are of our human relations. Children know this naturally, as Wordsworth observed, until shades of the prison house close in.
Eco psychology is amazingly ambitious, seeking to reopen blocked lines not just to our own subconscious, with Freud, nor just to the collective unconscious, with Jung, nor even to nature on our planet alone, but to the whole universe, because the latest cosmology confirms the oneness of time, space, spirit and mind and the new particle physics sees matter itself as non material.
This is joyful news for our tortured psyche. Humankind can emerge from a depressing two or three centuries of thinking we are a marginal accident in some dark corner of infinity. Instead, vastness works for us, which is very comforting. "Just as the womb shelters and nurtures the newly fertilised cell it so vastly overwhelms in size, so too these intimidating immensities sustain the life that seems lost within their magnitude".
So once again the universe is purposeful (as it always was before the Enlightenment), "using distance and matter and time to embody its idea of things". The highest idea of things so far is us: "as the emergent form at the outer edge of cosmic evolution, our species assumes a strange, new centrality in that history".
This is the anthropic principle, the much disputed but still respectable view that the universe could not have produced the right conditions for human life if human life had not been its aim all along. It couldn't be chance, Roszak argues, because the Big Bang theory doesn't allow the universe enough time for all the necessary permutations. Those famous monkeys typing away randomly wouldn't have had time to get through a single Shakespearean scene.

Au commencement était l’écologie, science qui engendra l’écologie fondamentale, conception philosophique assez floue, qui par réaction, fit naître l’écologie sociale, mouvement de protestation politique radical tendant vers l’anarchisme. Pendant tout ce temps, « la nouvelle science économique » mûrissait discrètement et élaborait des alternatives écologiques à l’obsession de la croissance, tout en étant incapable d’empêcher que la religion du « Dieu est vert » ne devienne un secteur de croissance à part entière. Voici maintenant la dernière nouveauté : l’écopsychologie.
Cette dernière pièce du puzzle ne provient pas du cabinet d’un psychanalyste écologique postfreudien et post-tout, mais de Théodore Roszak, historien de la contre-culture des années 60 (l’expression est de lui), romancier et le plus cérébral des éco-prophètes romantiques américains. Il lance une doctrine qui promet de devenir la discipline écologique ultime, car elle influe par définition sur toutes les autres.
Roszak soutient qu’il n’y a pas de santé mentale possible dans nos villes tant que nous ne ravivons pas les liens psychiques qui nous unissent à la nature, et il avance que la conscience de ces liens, héritée de notre passé le plus ancien, subsiste dans notre subconscient. Ces liens seraient d’après lui bien plus forts que la relation mère-enfant, qui a pourtant été étudiée à fond. Les hommes d’avant l’ère scientifique savaient et sentaient que de tels liens existaient ; pour être en bonne santé, nous devons réapprendre à être profondément sensibles aux arbres, aux montagnes et aux animaux, et non plus seulement à nos proches. Comme l’avait observé Wordsworth, poète anglais de la fin du 18ème, les enfants savent cela naturellement mais perdent progressivement cette faculté à mesure qu’ils sont rattrapés par les conventions sociales.
L’écopsychologie est une doctrine extraordinairement ambitieuse, puisqu’elle cherche à rouvrir les voies bouchées qui communiquent avec notre subconscient, en se référant à Freud, ainsi que celles qui communiquent avec l’inconscient collectif, en se référant à Jung, mais aussi celles qui nous relient à la nature, non seulement sur notre planète mais dans l’univers tout entier. Car en effet, les travaux les plus récents de la cosmologie confirment l’unicité du temps, de l’espace, de l’esprit et de la pensée tandis que la nouvelle physique des particules stipule que la matière elle-même n’est pas matérielle.
Notre âme torturée a là de quoi se réjouir. L’humanité peut enfin sortir de la période longue de deux ou trois siècles, pendant laquelle elle s’estimait n’être qu’un accident dénué d’intérêt perdu dans un coin sombre de l’infini. Au lieu de cela, l’extrêmement grand nous est favorable, ce qui est très réconfortant. « Tout comme l’utérus abrite et nourrit la cellule fraîchement fécondée, noyée dans la masse imposante de ce dernier, l’amplitude intimidante de l’espace nourrit la vie qui semble perdue dans son immensité. »
C’est ainsi que l’univers retrouve une finalité (la finalité qui nous était familière avant les Lumières), « l’espace, la matière et le temps étant des manifestations de son idée des choses ». Nous sommes l’idée la plus élevée que l’univers ait engendrée jusqu’à présent : « en tant que forme naissant à la limite de l’évolution cosmique, notre espèce joue un rôle central, à la fois étrange et nouveau, dans cette évolution ».
C’est le principe anthropique, l’opinion très contestée mais néanmoins respectable selon laquelle l’univers n’aurait pas produit les conditions propices à la vie humaine, si celle-ci n’avait pas été son objectif dès le début. Ce n’est pas le hasard qui est à l’origine de la vie humaine, soutient Roszak, car dans la théorie du Big Bang, la création de l’univers est si rapide que toutes les combinaisons nécessaires n’auraient pas pu se produire. Ces fameux singes tapant au hasard sur un clavier n’auraient pas eu le temps de finir ne serait-ce qu’une scène de Shakespeare.

PRINTEMPS
J’ai laissé passer l’hiver où seule la mer me nourrit de sa lumière. Je n’ai pas oublié l’automne qui craque sous mes pas. Je n’attends rien de l’été mais beaucoup du printemps, de ce printemps, de ce mois d’avril dont l’origine vient d’un mot latin qui signifie s’ouvrir. Quelle chance !
Cela commence par de l’aubépine qui me surprend un matin dans ma promenade le long du Léguer où les Tadornes préparent leurs nids. Cela commence aussi par le chant du merle qui, comme l’écrit Guillevic, …/ dit le passé parmi l’avenir, / Dans l’espace qu’il veut bâtir. / Cela commence enfin par une envie de se lever à l’aube, pour surprendre les parents en flagrant délit d’enfance, le matin de Pâques. Le jardin était frais et pris au piège de la rosée. Nous étions si petits et nos yeux si grands. Chacun recevait sa part de paradis, surtout ceux qui l’avaient préparé. Les cloches, tout juste arrivées de Rome, s’étaient posées sur la terre pour nous dire que la joie revenait par le rose des pommiers ; l’or des ajoncs dont le parfum éclate entre les doigts et le bleu des pervenches qui se multiplie sur le vert des talus.
C’est la vie qui traverse la mort encore une fois et pour toujours, comme disent, toujours, la première fois, les amoureux dont les poèmes sont des baisers à sens unique.
