Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. Encaisser la douleur, se disaient-elles, s’en accommoder : les douleurs lancinantes dans les bras, les articulations de la hanche rongées, les crises de lumbago à force de se pencher, de longues années durant, sur les machines à coudre, les mains rendues calleuses par les lessives, les genoux rouillés du fait de ces heures interminables à récurer le sol de la cuisine avec les vieux caleçons de leurs maris.
Lorsque mes parents se posaient pour regarder la lutte, tous les samedis après-midi, avec, à la main, un thé au lait et à la cardamone, ils aspiraient à cette distraction, ils avaient vraiment besoin de rire. Mais ils voulaient surtout que le gentil, ne serait-ce qu’une seule fois, l’emporte sur le méchant. Ils espéraient que cette brute, ce matamore beuglant, reçoive enfin ce qu’il méritait. Leurs prières allaient au gentil, allongé, là-bas, sur le tapis, prisonnier d’une double saisie de doigts ou à l'agonie, les mains crispées sur ses reins, pour qu’il ne jette pas l’éponge. Si seulement il pouvait tenir bon encore un peu, endurer la douleur, aller jusqu’au bout. Si seulement il se montrait capable d’agir ainsi, il y aurait des chances, la lutte étant ce qu’elle était, qu’il remporte la victoire. Ce ne serait, toutefois, qu’une victoire mitigée. Making a movie because it offers a fat part for your best girl turns out to be a dubious way to get a hit. Robert Evans found that out with The Great Gatsby.
Daisy is traveling with her addled mother and yahoo younger brother. Winterbourne is struck by Daisy's beauty and amused by her disregard for European propriety.
He tries to ply his suit but Daisy is not only a tease but has acquired a reputation for tasteless and outrageous flouting of the rules of Roman society. Doors are beginning to close although all she has really done is flirt vigorously with a young Roman from the wrong side of the Forum. Winterbourne chooses to stay with the right people and Daisy in a gesture of defiance goes to the Colosseum at night for a stroll with her too pomaded, too scented beau.
I'm afraid it's almost impossible to make the conventions of those days dramatically useful in 1974. Shepherd does not help matters by playing Daisy as such a babble-mouthed dumdum it's hard to understand how anyone with a grain of sense could go lusting for her after the first half hour. She is certainly attractive in a sturdy mid-Western way. I simply can't believe a mere attack of Italian-brand malaria could get her down much less do her in. Barry Brown is impressive as Winterbourne, reacting to Daisy eagerly, less eagerly and finally, apprehensively.
There is a true rendition by Mildred Natwick. The whole production is crammed with beautiful shots of Vevey, and its still extant Hotel. If that's enough to satisfy you, you'll find Daisy rewarding. Otherwise you're in for a dose of tedium.

Il cumule les tentatives de rapprochement mais Daisy n’est pas seulement une séductrice, elle s’est également attirée une réputation de quelqu’un dont les manières excentriques et désinvoltes bafouent les conventions de la société romaine. Les portes commencent à se fermer les unes après les autres bien qu’elle n’ait, en fin de compte, fait que courtiser avec une fougue certaine, un jeune romain qui n’appartient pas à la même classe sociale. Winterbourne choisit de rester avec les «gens biens » et Daisy, dans un élan provocateur , décide de faire une promenade nocturne dans les environs du colisée avec son soupirant gominé et parfumé à outrance.
J’ai bien peur que ce soit quasiment impossible de faire passer les conventions sociales de cette époque comme incontestablement utiles en 1974. Sherpherd n’arrange en rien les choses en nous proposant une Daisy qui parle beaucoup pour ne rien dire et tellement nunuche qu’on a du mal à comprendre comment quelqu’un avec un brin d’intelligence aurait pu encore avoir envie d’elle une fois la première demi-heure écoulée. Sans aucun doute est-elle attirante si on vient de l’Amérique profonde. J’ai juste du mal à croire qu’une simple crise de Malaria à l’italienne puisse la fatiguer ou pire encore avoir raison d’elle. Barry Brown, lui, est impressionnant face à Daisy, il passe d’une impatience non dissimulée à une impatience bien dissimulée pour finir en proie à une inquiétude évidente.

Le joueur suivant peut soit passer, soit poser une combinaison supérieure ayant le même nombre de cartes (par exemple trois 6). Lorsque tout le monde a eu la possibilité de jouer (on ne fait qu’un tour de table), le dernier à avoir posé des cartes écarte toutes les cartes jouées et entame le tour suivant.
Lorsqu’un joueur pose les dernières cartes de sa main et si personne ne monte ou ne coupe, c’est le joueur à sa gauche qui entame le nouveau tour.
Fin d’une manche : Le dernier à s’être débarrassé de toutes ses cartes marque 0 point, l’avant-dernier 1 point, le précédent 2 points, etc…
Lorsque la manche est finie, celui qui avait commencé celle-ci distribue, et le joueur à sa gauche entame la suivante.
