and the Abbott RealTime HIV-1 viral load test, the most sensitive test of its kind capable of detecting and precisely measuring all known strains of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Abbott's RealTime HIV-1 test, approved for use in the United States in May 2007, and run on the m2000 system, is the only viral load test of its kind that can detect and measure all group M, group N and group O strains of HIV-1 as well as non-B subtypes of the virus. The products offer physicians a quick and highly accurate test method to help ensure their patients receive the most effective treatment.
This is the third time in five years Abbott has been selected for a Chicago Innovation Award. In 2005, the company's PathVysion(TM) (http://www.pathvysion.com ) breast cancer test received the honor, and in 2003, HUMIRA(TM)(http://humira.com ), the first human monoclonal antibody drug for rheumatoid arthritis, won the award.
"At Abbott we're in the business of improving lives -- often saving lives. That's an important motivation in fostering innovation," said Miles D. White, chairman and chief executive officer, Abbott. "Patients depend on us for new and better medicines, diagnostics and nutritionals, and that inspires our scientists everyday. The m2000 and HIV-1 viral load test, PathVysion and HUMIRA are just a few examples of the caliber of research being conducted at Abbott to find solutions to unmet medical needs."
Sponsored by Kuczmarski and Associates and the Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Innovation Awards are intended to create awareness of the contributions of Chicago-area companies in developing innovative products that change the world. Abbott and other awardees will be recognized at a ceremony and reception tonight at the Goodman Theatre attended by some 400 local business, academic and government leaders.

In Washington blogger Mike Rogers uses the Web to "out" gay government staffers and members of Congress. Naomi Seligman Steiner, deputy director of the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, says the rise of the Internet and 24-hour cable news has empowered the public with an "insatiable appetite" for scandal.
That was the case in Indonesia last year, when a member of parliament resigned after a video clip of him frolicking with a local pop singer surfaced on the Web. The singer reportedly said she took the video with her cellphone, but did not know how the video made its way to the Internet. Her popularity surged; his did not.

| Translation - English Multinational pharmaceutical companies march into Chinese market; Capital bottleneck of for local R&D needs to be removed
With the fast development of the its national economy and its scientific research sector, China has become a strategic location and for multinational pharmaceutical companies who are come marching intoto the country one after the other to conduct research and development (R&D) in succession. To date, such powerful multinationals as AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, Bayer, Novartis, GlaxoSmithKline and Roche have set up vertically integrated R&D centers in China. It is generally believed in the industry. The consensus among industry analysts is that this these moves marks the march entry of the multinationals into the core area of drug development.
Most recently, Roche announced the establishment of its Shanghai-based China drug development center. This fully-featured equipped clinical drug development center, featuring complete development capability ranging from early innovative design exploration to effective late clinical development and to registration of the developed product with the authorities, is the first of its kind in China and the Asia-Pacific region except Japan. As a result, Roche became the first multinational pharmaceutical company to bring the full capacity of clinical drug development to China.
Jean-Jacques Garaud, global head of pharmaceutical development for Roche, explained the gave four reasons why the company for selected selecting to place these facilities in the Chinese market China: a. China is expected to become the world's third largest pharmaceutical market by 2010; b. setting up a development center in China will enable Roche to known understand the particular needs of local patients those seeking local medical services better and their needs better and to get closer access to the Chinese therapeutic market; c. the Chinese government of China is making great efforts to help thrown a lot of weight behind helping the pharmaceutical industry sector continue to develop new drugs by intensifying focusing on research and development; and d. China has plenty a plethora of professionals and boasts good technical strength.
Franz B. Humer, chairman and CEO of Roche, indicated that, in studying the feasibility of making R&D investments in China, multinational pharmaceutical companies need to consider the following factors: sufficient availability of talent reserve, a sound regulatory mechanism and an open research environment. More importantly, said industry analysts, making such investments in China can not only bring down R&D costs but also disperse R&D risks, shorten the R&D cycle of for new drugs and accelerate time to market.
"This is an industry with high risks and requiring high steep investments," said Humer.
The biggest bottleneck of in China's research and development of new drugs lies in the inadequate funding, which is followed by the lack of professionals specializing in drug R&D, and t. The arrival of multinational pharmaceutical companies is worsening aggravating the already tight market for talent situation, according to the analysts.
The analysts expect the establishment of China-based R&D centers by multinationals to boost independent innovation of among China's pharmaceutical companies to some extent, as well as to bring about the establishment of advanced R&D management systems and practices for in China.
