Source text - English Time Pressure
As a nation we are working ever longer hours. Congestion and long commutes are limiting the amount of time that we are spending together as family units. This has further been effected by the growth of dual working household. The phenomenon has lead to an increased reliance on crèches – further limiting the interaction of parents with their children.
In order to compensate for both the longer hours we are working and the more limited interaction with our children, we are spending increasing amounts of money on ever more exciting and exotic holidays.
The Power of SLoPS
Singles Living Off their Parents (SloPs) continue to emerge in Ireland. These off spring can live in the family home until their late 20’s, often paying limited rent. They can’t afford to buy a property due to increased house prices and do not went to rent because it is considered to be a waste of money. Their parents are often reluctant to force them to move out of the family home.
Given that they are working, they often have considerable disposable income which they spend on a wide range of products and services including cars, clothing, beauty products and travel. They often wait until their early 30’s before they get married.
Their travel behaviour can be extensive and exotic. On the one other hand, their parents are witnessing the travel patterns of this generation, .... all of which has been one of the drivers of increased travel in older generations.
