It is still common now for natives of Kyoto and Osaka to protect the ancestral fortune, to swim against the great capitalistic current and keep up the family name. In Tokyo’s Shitamachi, however, such men can probably be counted on one hand. Most of them squandered their parents’ money, living nevertheless in some back street of the neighborhood where they were born – that is, until the earthquake precipitated their degeneration and dispersed them to suburbs where everyone lost track of them. I guess a number of such old-timers still linger about in Honjo, Fukagawa and Asakusa, as even now, after the earthquake, relatively many small houses survive out there. But the most tragic fate of all befell the Nihonbashikko. Since the traces of their houses lay within the reach of Kyōbashi, Ginza and Marunouchi, they ended up being entombed under huge building blocks, and the existence of the little alleys where they used to abide is no longer tolerated. When I take a walk in Senba or Shimanouchi and come across homes with snug latticework and long-established shops with plastered, old-fashioned walls, I have to think of the old Nihonbashi and the homes of my elementary school friends. Except for my friend of the Kairakuen, none of them is still living in the same place as then. The Tanizaki main and branch families too, which used to be located in Kayabachō, Horiechō and Suginomori – all within a radius of five, six hundred meters from Kakigarachō – moved to those suburbs I previously called “colder than Hokkaidō,” or even further, to Korea and Brazil. (2) For theft prevention: pass a wire through the headphone pad hanger.
(3) Pass the other end of the wire through the wire end's loop.
(4) The wire for theft prevention completed.
(5) Fix the wire to the display stand.

(7) Power setup: connect the AC power adapter to the outlet.
(8) Connect the power plug to the jack of the display stand.
(9) Connect the headphone plug to another jack.

「ひよツとしたら、己は白痴になりかけて居るのではあるまいか。」――などゝ危ぶまれるくらゐ、此の頃の彼の頭脳は散漫で薄弱で愚鈍で、或る一つの思想を五分と考へ續ける力がなくなつて居る。殊更創作などに取りかゝる際は、一層精神の働きが曇つて、何事かを考へようとすればする程、揮發油の發散する如く心が四方八方へ散らばつて消え失せて了ふ。彼は元來恐ろしい遲筆家であつたが、それでも昨今のやうに澁滯し、窘束する事はあまりなかつた。
「一體どうしたと云ふのだらう。ほんたうにどう云ふ譯なんだらう。」
彼は自暴(やけ)になつて、石塊(いしころ)のやうな無價値な空虚な頭から、何かを絞り出す積りなのか、神鬮(おみくじ)の箱を振るやうに頻りと頸筋を動かして見る。けれども勿論、そんな事が何の効果を奏する筈もない。――饒太郎と云ふ人間の値打(ねうち)は、像や豚と同じく、その肉體を形成して居る物質の總量以外に、今や全く何者もない譯なのである。あのいろいろ人間じみた、高尚な複雑な、さうして優雅な理性だの感情だの微妙な作用はピタリと止まつて、唯肉體ばかりが其れと無頓着にムクムクと肥滿し、多量の血液を充實させ、いつも活氣の横溢した盛んな生理状態にある。
しかし、饒太郎は此れ程になつても、決して自分が馬鹿になつた結果であらうとは思はなかつた。――己の頭が空虚(からつぽ)なのは、己が馬鹿である證據にはならない。其れは世の中に己の頭を充たすに足るだけの、立派な、實質のある思想が存在して居ないからだ。つまり人生其の者が無意味で空虚であると云ふ證據なのだ。――彼は自ら斯う辯解して居るのだが、此の辯解は他人には兎に角、自分の良心に對しては充分有力であつた。
「新しい哲學」「新しい宗教」などゝ云ふ世間の聲に不安を感じて、彼は不承無承にジヱームスや、オイツケンや、ベルグソンの著述を繙いて見るが、いつも通讀しないで投げ捨てゝ了ふ。其の癖どんなに難解な書物でも彼には難解だと感ぜられた例(ためし)がない。二三行讀めば、先の先までスツカリ洞見する事が出來て、忽ち輕蔑の念を起す。
「此れで何が新しいのだ。こんな理屈は己だつて百も承知して居るのだ。」
と、彼は私かに傲語する。實際彼等の哲理と云ふものは、いざ讀んで見ると、大概今迄に印度人や希臘人や乃至饒太郎自身が朧ろげながら感じたり考へたり聞いたりした事ばかりで、其れを新しく系統的に論理的に陳述したと云ふだけの話、格別破天荒な發見もなければ、自分の心を引捉へて浚つて行く程の能力も價値もありはしない。幾何學の根本(こんぽん)に通じて居る人間は、細かい定理を一々暗誦する必要がないと同じく、彼も亦此れ等の哲學書のペエヂを追うて、論理の段階を一々蹈みしめて、結局わかり切つた結論に到着する必要はない。だから彼の無學は、彼の賢明なる所以なのである。賢き無學！ 然り、まことに賢き無學と呼ぶ可きものなのである。――
彼は飽く迄も斯く信じ、斯く斷じて、自ら安んじようと努めて居るが、卑怯にも自分の「賢き無學」を世間へ堂々と發表し、宣言する事を恐れて居る。それでやつぱり、藝術家――文學者と云ふ地位に對して少しは物識りを装つて行く都合上、いやいやながら、無益と知りながら、稀には理屈つぽい書物を手にする事がないでもない。ところが悲しい哉、例の傲慢に妨げられて、物を鼻先で理解する代りに、シツカリと記憶するだけの注意力を失つて居る。あれ程賢明を誇つて居る彼が、をかしな事に何を讀んでも其の場限りで、あとはケロリと忘れて了ふ。

‘Misschien begin ik wel gek te worden?’ vroeg hij zich bezorgd af – zodanig was zijn brein verstrooid, futloos en afgestompt de laatste tijd. Het verloor de kracht om een gedachte vijf minuten vast te houden. Vooral als hij zich aan het schrijven zette, werden de processen van zijn geest troebeler dan ooit. Hoe meer hij zich inspande om over iets na te denken, hoe meer zijn geest zich in alle richtingen verspreidde, als vervliegende benzine. Altijd al was hij een vreselijk trage schrijver geweest, maar zelden was hij zo muurvast komen te zitten als de laatste dagen.
‘Wat is er toch aan de hand? Wat heeft dit te betekenen?’
Wanhopig schudde hij zijn nekspieren heen en weer als een doos met geluksbriefjes, alsof hij zo iets uit zijn lege, volstrekt waardeloze hoofd wou puren. Uiteraard had ook dit niet het minste resultaat. Afgezien van het gewicht van de materie waaruit zijn lichaam bestond, had de mens Jotaro geen enkele waarde meer, net als een olifant of een varken. De subtiele processen van de hoogstaande, complexe, verfijnde ratio en emoties die hem tot mens maakten, waren met een schok tot stilstand gekomen. Enkel zijn lichaam was, onverschillig hiervoor, een stuk dikker geworden en had heel wat bloed aangekweekt. Fysiek liep hij voortdurend over van energie en vitaliteit.
Ook al was Jotaro er zo erg aan toe, geen moment dacht hij eraan dat dit kwam doordat hij dom geworden was. ‘Dat mijn hoofd leeg is, bewijst niet dat ik dom zou zijn. Het is omdat er op deze wereld geen voortreffelijke, substantiële gedachten bestaan die het waard zijn om mijn hoofd te vullen. Het bewijst met andere woorden dat het mensenleven zelf zinloos en leeg is.’ Zo sprak hij zichzelf goed. Wat anderen hiervan ook mochten denken, zijn geweten was er in ieder geval voldoende door gesust.
Als de mensen het echter hadden over ‘een nieuwe filosofie’ of ‘een nieuwe religie,’ dan voelde hij zich niet op zijn gemak. Zo gebeurde het dat hij, zwaar tegen zijn zin, werken van schrijvers als James, Eucken of Bergson ter hand nam. Maar steeds eindigde het ermee dat hij die onuitgelezen weggooide. Niet dat hij al ooit had gevonden dat zo’n boek moeilijk was, hoe ondoorgrondelijk het ook mocht wezen. Hij hoefde maar een paar regels te lezen om precies te weten wat allemaal zou volgen. Onmiddellijk rees minachting bij hem op.
‘Welnu, wat voor nieuws? Vertel me iets dat ik nog niet weet!’ snoefde hij bij zichzelf. Bij nadere inspectie bestonden hun zogenaamde filosofieën haast uitsluitend uit zaken die de Indiërs, de Grieken of hijzelf in het verleden reeds vaag hadden aangevoeld, bedacht of gehoord. Al wat ze deden, was deze zaken op een systematische en logische manier uiteenzetten. Van baanbrekende ontdekkingen geen spoor. Zijn interesse wegdragen konden ze niet of ze waren het niet waard. Net zoals iemand die onderlegd is in de beginselen van de meetkunde het overbodig vindt om kleinere formules één voor één uit het hoofd te leren, zo zag ook Jotaro er tegen op om al de bladzijden van deze filosofische traktaten achterna te hollen en de logische stappen één voor één te doorlopen, om dan uiteindelijk tot een evidente conclusie te komen. Zijn ongeletterdheid was dus de grondslag van zijn wijsheid. Wijs en ongeletterd! Jazeker, wijs en ongeletterd was precies wat hij was.
Steevast geloofde en beoordeelde hij dingen op deze manier, ijverig pogend om zichzelf gerust te stellen. Hij had echter het lef niet om zijn ‘wijsheid en ongeletterdheid’ met tromgeroffel en bazuingeschal aan het brede publiek bekend te maken. A native of Flanders, the northern part of Belgium, Dutch is my mother tongue, but as my TOEIC (950) and TOEFL (110) scores indicate, I also have near-native command of English. I developed my English skills even further during the following 2 years, which I spent in the all-English academic environment of the Graduate Program in Global Studies at Sophia University.
8 years of learning the Japanese language and reading modern Japanese literature, in addition to my 2 years at Waseda’s all-Japanese Kyōikugaku kenkyūka (Graduate School of Education) and over 4 years of residence in Tokyo, have moreover polished my Japanese reading and conversational skills to a superb level.
