Med matsäck och förstärkningsplagg i ryggsäcken och stighudar under randonnéskidorna är jag och kompisarna på väg uppåt. A mire can consist of a mosaic of different fens and bogs. The difference between these is that a fen not only gets water from precipitation, but also from the ground-water in the surrounding ground, while a bog only gets water from rain and snow. This means that a fen has a considerably greater variety of species than a bog because the fen water has passed through a layer of soil and become enriched with nutritive salts. A bog, on the other hand, is nutrient poor. When a fen has grown thickly enough it can turn into a bog, because the peat is then lying higher than the ground-water can reach from below. |
