Grotte de Lascaux La grotte de Lascaux a été découverte le 12 septembre 1940, par quatre adolescents (Marcel Ravidat, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agnel et Simon Coencas). Elle se trouve dans le Périgord Noir, à Proximité de Montignac. La vraie grotte est fermée, seule une copie partielle est ouverte au public. L'étude des 600 peintures préhistoriques de la grotte de Lascaux fait appel à de nombreux domaines archéologiques mais est quelque peu limitée, à la fois par la position hors stratigraphie de ces témoignages, par la nature des matériaux utilisés, par les méthodes de datation, mais aussi par leur interprétation. Lascaux est une colline calcaire d'âge Coniacien (Crétacé supérieur), située en Dordogne. La grotte de Lascaux fait office d'exception au regard de toutes les autres grottes de la région par le fait qu'elle est très profonde et « sèche ». En effet, une couche de marne imperméable l'isole de toute infiltration d'eau, empêchant toute formation de concrétion stalagtitique de calcite. Les hommes qui ont orné Lascaux sont des Cro-Magnon, c'est-à-dire des Homo sapiens. Ils sont doués d'intelligence, connaissent le langage, ont une civilisation avancée et une vie sociale. Ils mènent une vie de chasseurs semi-nomades, c'est pourquoi ils connaissent bien les détails de l'anatomie des animaux et leurs comportements. Cependant, la faune figurée sur les parois n'était pas celle chassée et consommée. Les nombreux troupeaux de rennes présents dans la région assuraient à eux seuls tous les besoins des hommes ; malgré cela on ne retrouve qu'une seule représentation de renne dans la grotte. Les erreurs de tracé sont rares et ils connaissent les techniques de la peinture : aplats plus ou moins colorés, perspective et usage du pochoir. Ils savent cadrer les silhouettes animales et les faire évoluer sur des reliefs rocheux. Les animaux se côtoient ou se confondent en tout ou partie, sans respect des proportions et des espèces. Les peintures ont été exécutées à l'aide de « crayons » d'ocres naturelles (mélange de sable et d'argile) jaunes et brunes, que la cuisson a pour effet de rougir, affleurant aux environs de la grotte. Les hommes préhistoriques utilisaient également des oxydes de manganèse ou de fer, noirs ou jaunes, surtout pour les contours et les petits détails anatomiques. Le charbon de bois végétal ou d'ossements, obtenu par calcination, était aussi largement utilisé, car il offre des teintes allant du vert olive au noir. L'eau de la grotte, chargée en Ca2 et CO32-, a servi d'unique liant, permettant ainsi l'adhérence entre les différentes particules du colorant et conférant le pouvoir d'adhésion au support. Et ce fut, grâce à l'emprisonnement sur les parois des pigments par les cristaux de calcite, que les motifs purent être longtemps conservés. Les pigments étaient appliqués directement sur la roche au doigt, au pinceau de fibres animales ou végétales, ou à l'aide d'un tampon de fourrure ou de fibres. Les contours, très nets parfois, étaient obtenus grâce à des caches de peau. Seules les peintures à base de charbon de bois peuvent être analysées directement par la méthode de datation par le Carbone 14. On a ainsi pu situer les peintures aux alentours de -17000 ans, soit au Magdalénien inférieur. Certains pigments peuvent être analysés indirectement par des méthodes relatives basées sur l'analyse stylistique de l'oeuvre ; ce qui permet de les situer dans un milieu chronologique précis. En effet, lors de la construction des oeuvres, des pigments sont tombés au pied des parois et se sont mêlés aux objets contemporains tels que des lamelles de silex, des pointes de sagaie, des os et de nombreuses lampes à suif du modèle de ceux qu'utilisaient les hommes préhistoriques à l'époque magdalénienne. À cette époque la région était colonisée par un important couvert forestier (frênes, chênes, tilleuls, charmes, pins...) comme le révèlent les pollens trouvés dans la grotte. Pourtant, il ne figure pas de sol ni de flore, ou de paysage sur les parois de la grotte. Les peintres sont des gens de métiers. Ils ont acquis une grande maîtrise du geste, ce qui fait de Lascaux une des plus anciennes cavernes profondes ornées. On suggère qu'elle avait pour objectif d'être un sanctuaire, une sorte de lieu où l'on vénérait les animaux dangereux (aurochs, ours...). Associés à ces peintures, on retrouve dans toute la grotte de nombreux traits complexes et variés. On estime qu'ils n'ont pas de signification directe mais pourraient être les premiers témoins d'une paléo-écriture. |

The Lascaux Cave The Lascaux cave was discovered on 12th September 1940 by four adolescents (Marcel Ravidat, Jacques Marsal, Georges Agnel and Simon Coencas). It is located in the Périgord Noir, near Montignac. The real cave is closed, only a partial copy being open to the public. Examination of the Lascaux cave's 600 prehistoric paintings falls within many archaeological domains. However, their interpretation is not always clear and their study is slightly constrained by their singular nature, by the type of materials used and by the available dating methods. Lascaux is a limestone hill from the Coniacian Age (Upper Cretaceous) situated in the Dordogne. The Lascaux cave is exceptional compared to the other caves in the region as it is very deep and dry. A layer of impermeable marl stops water penetrating from the exterior, preventing calcium carbonate concretion and stalactite formation. The men who decorated Lascaux were Cro-Magnons - in other words, Homo Sapiens. They were gifted with intelligence, having language, an advanced civilisation and a communal life. They lived as semi-nomadic hunters, which explains their good knowledge of the anatomy and behaviour of animals. However, those animals depicted on the walls were not the ones that were hunted and eaten. The many herds of reindeer that lived in the region were enough in themselves for all the needs of man. Despite that, only one representation of a deer has been found in the cave. Errors of outline are rare and they knew the techniques of painting: backgrounds of varying shades, perspective and use of the stencil. They knew how to frame the animals' silhouettes and take advantage of the natural relief of the rock walls. The animals are either grouped or mixed, wholly or partly, without regard for proportions or species. The paintings were done with yellow and brown "crayons" of natural ochre (a mixture of sand and clay), which, when fired, gave a reddish hue when seen from the interior of the cave. The prehistoric men also used black or yellow oxides of manganese or iron, mainly for contours and small anatomic details. Charcoal or bone ashes were also widely used, as they give shades going from olive green to black. The water in the cave, saturated with Ca2 and CO32-, served as the only binder, gluing the different particles of the pigment together and sticking them to the supporting rock. This resulted in a layer of calcite crystals covering the pigments and it was thanks to this that the pictures were preserved for so long. The pigments were applied direct to the rock either with the finger, with a brush made of animal or vegetable fibres or with a stamp made from fur or fibre. The contours, which are sometimes very clear, were done with the help of masks made of skin. Only the paintings based upon charcoal can be directly analysed by Carbon 14 dating. This has given the paintings an age of around 17,000 years, that is from the Lower Magdalenian. Some pigments can be indirectly analysed using relative methods based upon the stylistic analysis of the work. This allows them to be placed within a precise timescale. As these pictures were being created, traces of pigment fell to the base of the rock faces and became mixed with contemporary objects such as flint blades, spear tips, bones and numerous tallow lamps of the type used by prehistoric man in the Magdalenian period. At the time, the region was heavily forested (ash, oak, lime, hornbeam, pine, etc), as revealed by the pollen found in the cave. However, none of the cave walls shows any scene containing flora, landscape or terrain. The painters were craftsmen who had acquired a real mastery of their art and their legacy makes Lascaux one of the oldest of the deep, decorated caves. It has been suggested that its purpose was to be a sanctuary, a place of homage towards dangerous animals (aurochs, bears, etc). In the cave, there are many complex and varied marks associated with the paintings. They are not believed to have any direct significance, but could be the precursors of an early form of writing. |
