Ziauddin Sardar has devoted his life to finding a place for a revived Islam in a world overrun by western ways of thought and behaviour. As a project for life it is quixotic in the extreme, but for all the frustrations of the past 40 years, Sardar has kept his faith and his good nature intact.
Desperately Seeking Paradise draws on an old Muslim literary tradition in which a man sets out from home and friends, ostensibly to make his pilgrimage to Mecca, but really to indulge his mental and spiritual restlessness. Good examples from the middle ages are Ibn Battuta's Rahlat in Arabic and Nasser Khosrow's Safarnameh in Persian. Laid over this high classical model is the disillusioned leftist memoir of modern times, familiar on the continent, of which one of the best examples is Jochen Schimmang's Der Schöne Vogel Phönix (1979). La Honda chiedeva il rinnovo del contratto, con la Yamaha eravamo formalmente d'accordo ma avremmo dovuto iniziare a parlare delle cose "pratiche", cioè della nuova squadra. Perchè io avevo intenzione di portare Jeremy e i ragazzi con me.
Il problema maggiore, a quel punto, era quello di mantenere il più assoluto riserbo. Perché mi stavano venendo dei cattivi pensieri. Non volevo sollevare il polverone in quella fase della stagione: volevo il tempo per spiegare alla Ducati il motivo per cui avevo intenzione di accettare un altro tipo di sfida, e non volevo rompere i rapporti con la Honda nella fase in cui stavamo apprestandoci a conquistare il campionato del mondo. Perché rovinare la festa, insomma?
