While some respondents noted “no change” in behavior, for the majority of companies, there is less appetite for long-term returns and a renewed focus on:
• The “short term”
• Retention of existing clients/business
• Core activities
Risk-averse thinking, excessive caution and delay, and slow decision-making have also been witnessed, particularly around making new investments. Companies are adopting a “wait and see” attitude before committing to any expenses. In some cases, projects are being reduced in scope or broken up into smaller, more measurable chunks to make the investment more palatable and the payoff more attractive. Spending and budget cuts, and restrictions on travel are also a reality.
Recruitment has been impacted in the same way; staff has been cut in many places and there are hiring freezes or holds on external recruitment and relocations in some firms. In other cases, recruitment is just stalled and involves lengthier hiring cycles. A priority right now is to establish stability in the short-term, with the hope that growth-oriented initiatives – including hiring – can be resumed in the medium to long term.
“Everybody is looking for short-term results . . . but not hiring will cause problems in the long term.”
In some cases, new avenues of opportunity are being pursued. There is some increased emphasis on new product development efforts, as companies look for opportunities in “next-generation technologies and growth engines.” Companies are also looking beyond their borders for new markets, and new brands and lower price points are being rolled out to broaden current market reach.
