ELEGANT, MAAR EEN BEETJE VERWAARLOOSD
Christopher Bailey over het machtige erfgoed van Burberry de Britse roots die hij deelt met het merk, en de kracht van emotie in mode.

Christopher Bailey (37) staat straks acht jaar aan het creatieve hoofd van Burberry. Hij speelt in de mannenmode min of meer buitenspel. in een sector waar op ijsblokjes gekoeld cynisme en gefingeerd machismo hoog scoren, kiest hij zonder gêne voor emotie. Zijn stijl is typisch Brits, maar toch ook universeel. Jongensachtig, maar tegelijk vol melancholie. In de traditie van een popgroep ais The Smiths, of de jonggestorven, bijna vergeten schrijver Denton Welch, die vanop zijn ziektebed een gitzwart maar desondanks mooi Engeland beschreef. De titel van het bekendste boek van Welch, In Youth Is Pleasure, vat de esthetiek van Baiiey enigszins samen. Deze zomer trekt Bailey, net ais Welch destijds, naar het Britse platteland. De collectie van Burberry Prorsum (de belangrijkste, op de catwalks van Milaan geshowde lijn van het merk) is dit seizoen ingegeven door de regisseur en schrijver Derek Jarman. Van diens tot modem monument en bedevaartsoord uitgeroepen tuin in de schaduw van een kerncentrale, in Dungeness aan de Engelse kust, heeft Bailey het kleurenpalet en de textuur overgenomen: moddertinten (van grijs tot beige), schakeringen van groen, en blauw in verschillende gradaties (voor de iucht, de Noordzee, en het kiezeistrand). De nadruk iigt op hchte jassen en regenmantels, liefst in // flinterdunne, soms gekreukte stoffen. Bailey combineert ze met lange, comfortabele cardigans, vederlichte pullovers, en hemden met broderie anglaise of in bedrukt zijde. Alles gedragen in lichte laagjes, over T-shirts met opvallend diep decolleté: een typisch Brits kippenborstje s ten zeerste aanbevolen.
Wat hebt u geieerd sinds u bij Burberry aan de slag bent?
Christopher Bailey: Iets wat ik eigenlijk al wist, maar wat ik pas sinds korte tijd goed besef: het enige wat écht telt, dat is een sterk team, en een nog sterkere band tussen een ontwerper en dat team. Bij Burberry is dat het geval, en dat s een groot geluk.
Wat is het belang en de rol van Burberry’s roots in de eenentwintigste eeuw? Hoe Brits is het merk nog?
Burberry is Brits. Daar begint en eindigt alles mee. je kunt het merk en zijn roots net scheiden. Burberry heeft vanzelfsprekend een pak verschillende facet- ten, maar op de een of andere manier zijn die allemaal gelinkt met Groot-Brittannië. Onze identiteit s Brits, ons erfgoed is Brits. Dat onderscheidt ons van andere luxemerken. Het maakt ons apart. En daar- om blijven die roots relevant.
Hoe zou u de Britse geest van Burberry definiëren, en wat bete- kent het voor u ais individu?
Dat betekent voor elke Brit iets anders. Maar je denkt natuurlijk onmiddellijk aan patriottisme, aan trots, aan excentriciteit, aan individualisme. Britten zijn doorgaans niet bang om zichzelf uit te drukken. Ze voelen zich comfortabel met hun eigen identiteit. De jongste collecties van Burberry Prorsum kunnen nog het best worden beschreven ais bitterzoet.
Is Groot-Brittannië inherent melancholisch, ofiigt het aanu?
Ik denk dat de wereld nu donkerder is dan vroeger het geval was. Die algemene gemoedstoestand wordt ook weerspiegeld in de collecties. Maar tegelijk zijn de kleren meer herkenbaar. Ze zijn op een stille manier luxueus. Dat lijkt me instinctief juist voor dit moment in de geschiedenis.
Wat is voor u het belang van emotie in mode?
Emotie is voor mij . In de luxemode houd je je bezig met het creéreri van dromen, met aspiratie, met inspirerende ideeën. Emoties zijn subtiel. 1k gebruik ze om de algemene sfeer van een collectie te creëren.
Uw shows zijn, wat mij betreft, emotioneler dan de advertentiecampagnes // van Burberry. De shows zijn zacht en warm, terwijl de campagnes eerder hard en afgelikt lijken. Hoe verklaart u dat verschil?
Een campagne heeft een andere rol of functie dan een show. Een campagne moet de verschillende soorten mensen aanspreken voor wie Burberry iets kan betekenen. Maar ze hebben steevast de catwalkshow als vertrekpunt. Zo’n show is het resultaat van maanden werken met een leger mensen, en van de toewijding van die mensen. Dat werk wordt ulteindehjk samengebald in een tableau van enkele minuten. En op dat moment wordt afles gesublimeerd. De modellen, de kieren, de muziek, de verlichting, het publiek: alles vloeit samen. En het resultaat s een sfeer die vaak emotioneel geladen is.
De zomercollectie is geïnspireerd door wijlen de Britse regisseur Derek Jarman. Wat betekent Jarman voor u, los van de kleuren en texturen van zijn tuin in Dungeness?
De tuin van Jarman was voor dit seizoen de belangrijkste inspiratiebron. Maar ik ben ook gefascineerd door de manier waarop hij in zijn tuin werkte. Door zijn toewijding, zijn passie. Door de duidelijke metaforen van zijn leven die je in zijn tuin kunt vinden.
Er bestaan verschillende percepties van Burberry. De stijl die u uitdraagt met Burberry Prorsum heeft nauwelijks jets ge- meen met de hooligangarderobe van de Britse chavs. En de in Knokke alomtegenwoordige Burberrysjaaltjes horen bij nog een ander ras.
Het klopt dat Burberry voor verschillende groepen mensen verschillende dingen betekent. Maar dat geldt voor om het even welk instituut met icoonwaarde. Ais je een erkend symbool bent, een stuk geschiedenis, dan kun je daar niet omheen. De chavs waren een ongelukkig verschijnsel, een minderheid in Groot-Brittannië. Ze droegen voorai imitatieproducten. Ze zijn niet representatief voor de rest van de wereld, waar het merk met meer respect wordt bejegend.
Ontwerpt u met een bepaald soort man in gedachten?
Ik ben over het algemeen meer geïnspireerd door foto’s en landschappen. Ik heb in mijn collecties voor Burberry regelmatig gerefereerd aan Britse kunstenaars: //David Hockney, L.S. Lowry, Derek Jarman of Bill Brandt. Ais ik denk aan de Burberryman, dan gaat het voor mij eerder over een energie dan over een persoon. ik zeg vaak dat hij elegant is, maar een beetje verwaarloosd. Christopher Bailey on the rich heritage of Burberry, the British roots he shares with the brand and the power of emotion in fashion.

Christopher Bailey (37) soon will have been the creative head of Burberry for eight years. In men’s fashion he plays more or less outside the rules. In a sector where ice-cold cynicism and feigned machismo score high, he unashamedly chooses emotion. His style is typically British, but still universal. Boyish, but also full of melancholy. In the tradition of pop bands like The Smiths, or writer Denton Welch, who died young and depicted a dark but beautiful England from his sick bed. The title of Welch’s best-known book, In Youth is Pleasure, to some extent sums up Bailey’s aesthetics.
This summer, just as Welch used to, Bailey travels to the countryside. The late film director and writer Derek Jarman was the inspiration for this season’s Burberry Prorsum collection (the brand’s most important line, shown on the catwalks of Milan). From his garden, a proclaimed modern monument and place of pilgrimage in the shadow of a nuclear power station at Dungeness on the English coast, Bailey has taken its palette of colours and texture: grey to beige muddy tints, tones of green, blue in various shades – the light, the North Sea and the pebble beach. The emphasis is on light jackets and raincoats, preferably in wafer-thin, sometimes creased fabrics. Bailey combines them with long, comfortable cardigans, feather-light pullovers and shirts of broderie anglaise or printed silk, all worn in light layers over T-shirts with markedly deep necklines: a typical British pigeon-breast is highly recommended.
What have you learnt since you started with Burberry?
Christopher Bailey: something that I already knew but what I only recently realised; the only thing that really counts is a strong team and an even stronger bond between a designer and that team. That’s the case with Burberry and it’s a great joy.
What are the importance and role of Burberry’s roots in the 21st century? How British has the brand remained?
Burberry is British. That’s the beginning and end of everything. You can’t separate the brand from the roots. Obviously Burberry has a whole lot of different facets, but in one way or another, they’re all linked to Great Britain. Our identity is British; our heritage is British. That distinguishes us from other luxury brands, it makes us different and, because of that, the roots stay relevant.
How would you define the British spirit of Burberry, and what does that mean for you as an individual?
It means something different to every Brit. But you naturally think of patriotism, of pride, of eccentricity, of individualisme. Brits are usually unafraid to express themselves. They feel comfortable with their own identity.
The latest Burberry Prorsum collections can best be described as bittersweet. Is Great Britain inherently melancholic, or is it just you?
I think that the world is a darker place now than it was before. That general mood is also reflected in the collections. But at the same time, the colours are more distinct: they are quietly luxurious. That seems instinctively correct to me at this moment in history.
What is the importance of emotion in fashion for you?
For me, emotion is primordial. In luxury fashion you are occupied with the creation of dreams, with aspiration, with inspiring ideas. Emotions are subtle; I use them to create the general atmosphere of a collection.
To me, your shows are more emotional than Burberry’s advertising campaigns. The shows are soft and warm while the campaigns appear more hard and cool. How do you explain that difference?
A campaign has a different role or function than a show. A campaign has to attract the various sorts of people for whom Burberry could mean something but they always have the catwalk show as the starting point. Such a show is the result of months of work by an army of people and the dedication of those people. That work is ultimately condensed into a scene lasting a few minutes and at that moment everything sublimates - the models, the clothing, the lighting, the public - everything flows together. And the result is an atmosphere that is often emotionally loaded.
The late British film director, Derek Jarman, inspired the summer collection. What is the significance of Jarman to you, apart from the colours and textures of his garden in Dungeness?
Jarman’s garden was the most important source of inspiration for this season. But I’m also fascinated by the way he worked in his garden, by his devotion, his passion, by the apparent metaphors of his life that you can find in his garden.
There are different perceptions of Burberry. The style you communicate with Burberry Prorsum has hardly anything in common with the hooligan wardrobe of the British chavs. And the ubiquitous Burberry scarves in Knokke belong to yet another race.
Burberry certainly means different things to different groups of people but that’s the same for any iconic institution. If you’re a recognised symbol, a part of history, you can’t avoid it. The chavs were an unfortunate phenomenon in Great Britain. They mostly wore imitations. They’re not representative for the rest of the world where the brand is treated with more respect.
Do you design with a certain type of man in your head?
Generally I’m more inspired by photos and landscapes. In my Burberry collections, I’ve regularly referred to British artists: David Hockney, L.S. Lowry, Derek Jarman or Bill Brandt. When I think of the Burberry man, it’s more about energy than a person. I often say that he is elegant but a little shabby. To me, it doesn’t have to be perfect and impeccable.

verklaren te zijn overeengekomen als volgt:
Artikel 1 Inhoud en duur van de overeenkomst
1. Bruikleengever staat voor de periode van vijf jaar, te rekenen vanaf DATUM, aan bruikleennemer in bruikleen af, en bruikleennemer aanvaardt in bruikleen ten behoeve van de vaste opstelling AANTAL kunstwerk(en), hierna te noemen de bruikleen, volgens aangehechte specificatie.
2. Bij het verstrijken van de termijn genoemd in het eerste lid van dit artikel zal deze stilzwijgend tot wederopzegging worden verlengd.
Artikel 2 Verzekering
1. Bruikleennemer aanvaardt alle verantwoordelijkheid en risico's verbonden aan het in bruikleen nemen en verplicht zich de bruikleen all risk te verzekeren voor de door bruikleengever opgegeven waarde(n).
2. Bruikleengever kan, indien de omstandigheden daartoe aanleiding geven, de hierboven bedoelde waarde(n) tussentijds herzien, echter niet zonder bruikleennemer hier op voorhand schriftelijk van in kennis te hebben gesteld.
3. Bruikleennemer zal alle informatie met betrekking tot de verzekerde waarde(n) als strikt vertrouwelijk beschouwen en geen gegevens hieromtrent aan derden ter beschikking stellen, tenzij de terbeschikkingstelling van deze gegevens noodzakelijk is om een wettelijke plicht na te komen dan wel noodzakelijk is in het kader van het verzekeren van de in bruikleen gegeven goederen.
4. De in lid 1 opgenomen verzekeringsplicht is niet van toepassing indien tussen partijen een wederzijdse vrijwaring van deze verzekeringsplicht schriftelijk is overeengekomen.
Artikel 3 Bescherming en veiligheid bruikleen
Bruikleennemer verbindt zich alle maatregelen te nemen in welke vorm dan ook, die van een goed
beheerder verwacht mogen worden ter beveiliging van de bruikleen tegen brand, inbraak, diefstal,
vermissing, beschadiging of welke omstandigheid ook, die de waarde doet verminderen.
Artikel 4 Schade of verlies
1. Bruikleennemer stelt in geval van verlies, beschadiging of veranderingen die optreden in de conditie van de bruikleen, bruikleengever hiervan onmiddellijk in kennis middels bijgevoegd wijzigingsformulier.
2. Bruikleennemer is aansprakelijk voor alle schade, anders dan normale slijtage van het object en schade aan het object als gevolg van natuurlijk verval.
3. Herstelwerkzaamheden of andere bewerkingen aan de bruikleen mogen niet worden verricht zonder toestemming van Bruikleengever. Hiertoe dient bruikleennemer een schriftelijk verzoek bij bruikleengever in, samen met een gedetailleerd conditierapport en dito behandelingsvoorstel opgesteld door een erkend restaurator, ingeschreven in het Restauratoren Register.
4. Eventuele behandeling van de bruikleen wordt conform het door bruikleengever bekrachtigde behandelingsvoorstel uitgevoerd en geschiedt door de restaurator die het behandelingsvoorstel heeft opgesteld, dan wel onder toezicht van deze restaurator. Bruikleennemer verplicht zich na behandeling bruikleengever het originele behandelingsverslag te sturen inclusief bijbehorend (origineel) beeldmateriaal van de bruikleen voor, tijdens en na de behandeling en een actueel conditierapport.
Artikel 5 Kosten bruikleen
Alle kosten voortvloeiend uit de bruikleen zijn voor rekening van bruikleennemer, waarbij inbegrepen:
a) de kosten van het ‘bruikleen-klaar’ maken, het transport en eventuele installatie van de bruikleen door bruikleengever;
b) eventuele kosten van verzekering en onderhoud van de bruikleen ten tijde van de bruikleenperiode, inclusief het transport;
c) eventuele kosten van herstel van schade, opgelopen tijdens de bruikleenperiode;
d) schadeloosstelling van bruikleengever voor de in deze overeenkomst aangegeven waarde in geval van verlies of vermissing, en voor waardevermindering in geval van blijvende beschadiging van de bruikleen.
Artikel 6 Exposeren bruikleen
1. Bruikleennemer zal de bruikleen uitsluitend exposeren op standplaats(en) zoals die zijn aangegeven op de specificatie die als bijlage gaat bij deze overeenkomst. Bruikleennemer mag de standplaats(en) zoals aangegeven op de specificatie bij deze overeenkomst veranderen, maar brengt bruikleengever daarvan per ommegaande schriftelijk van op de hoogte.
2. Bruikleennemer zal de bruikleen uitsluitend voor het in artikel 1 aangegeven doel exposeren.
3. Bruikleennemer voert het complete beheer van de ruimte waarin de bruikleen wordt geëxposeerd. Bruikleennemer zal op verzoek van bruikleengever een faciliteitenrapport aan bruikleengever verstrekken.
4. Bruikleennemer draagt zorg voor geschikte conditionering van de ruimte waarin de bruikleen wordt geëxposeerd.
5. Bruikleennemer vermeldt bij tentoonstelling en/of openbaarmaking van de bruikleen op een goed zichtbare plaats bij object en in catalogus ‘Bruikleen XXX, XXX.
Artikel 7 Publicatie en exploitatie
1. Bruikleennemer maakt geen inbreuk op het auteursrecht van de rechthebbende(n).
2. Publicatie en exploitatie van beeldmateriaal met betrekking tot (onderdelen van) de bruikleen is niet toegestaan zonder schriftelijke toestemming van bruikleengever en dan alleen met inachtneming van de ‘Voorwaarden gebruik beeldmateriaal kunstvoorwerpen XXX'.
3. Bij iedere publicatie van objecten uit de XXX collectie door bruikleennemer is bruikleennemer verplicht een bewijsexemplaar hiervan aan bruikleengever te verstrekken. De publicatie(s) dient te worden gestuurd aan: XXX, Afdeling Collecties, PostbusXXX, XXX.
Artikel 8 Onderbruikleen
Bruikleennemer draagt de bruikleen niet aan derden over of staat deze aan derden af zonder daartoe schriftelijk toestemming te hebben gekregen van de bruikleengever.
Artikel 9 Algemeen Conditie Formulier (ACF-B)
1. Bij ontvangst van de bruikleen ondertekent bruikleennemer, dan wel een door bruikleennemer gemachtigde, het ‘ACF-B-formulier(en)’, waarmee bruikleennemer verklaart de bruikleen in de door bruikleengever opgetekende staat ontvangen te hebben.
2. Indien de conditie van de bruikleen naar de mening van bruikleennemer afwijkt van die zoals op het formulier aangegeven, maakt bruikleennemer hiervan op het ACF-B formulier melding. Bruikleennemer zendt het formulier binnen één week na ontvangst van de bruikleen retour aan bruikleengever.
Artikel 10 Informatie en bezichtiging bruikleen
1. Bruikleennemer verstrekt op verzoek van bruikleengever periodiek gegevens betreffende locatie en staat van de bruikleen.
2. Bruikleengever, dan wel een door deze gemachtigde, is te allen tijde gerechtigd de bruikleen te bezichtigen en erop toe te zien, dat deze door bruikleennemer passend wordt beheerd.
Artikel 11 Terugnamebevoegdheid
1. Bruikleengever behoudt zicht het recht voor (onderdelen van) de bruikleen in bijzondere gevallen tijdelijk terug te nemen, waarbij bruikleengever een opzegtermijn zal aanhouden van minimaal 2 maanden voorafgaande aan de datum van het transport.
2. Bruikleengever behoudt zich het recht voor (onderdelen van) de bruikleen in bijzondere gevallen, definitief terug te nemen. Bruikleengever stuurt het met redenen omkleed besluit daartoe schriftelijk aan bruikleennemer.
Artikel 12 Contactpersoon
Bruikleennemer laat alle correspondentie tussen bruikleennemer en bruikleengever zoveel mogelijk via één persoon lopen en zal elke verandering in naam, adres, contactpersoon en andere gegevens die van invloed kunnen zijn op deze overeenkomst, onmiddellijk schriftelijk aan bruikleengever melden.
In geval van rechtsopvolging dient bruikleennemer bruikleengever daarvan onmiddellijk op de hoogte te stellen.
Artikel 13 Niet-naleving
Bij niet-naleving van bovenstaande bepalingen door bruikleennemer, zulks ter beoordeling van bruikleengever, is bruikleengever gerechtigd deze overeenkomst op te zeggen, dan wel de bruikleen onmiddellijk terug te eisen op de door deze laatste aan te geven wijze, waarbij alle daarvoor te maken kosten voor rekening van de bruikleennemer komen.
Artikel 14 Inwerkingtreding
1. Deze overeenkomst treedt na ondertekening door beide partijen, of door het in ontvangst nemen van de bruikleen door bruikleennemer in werking.
2. Afwijkingen van deze overeenkomst zijn slechts bindend voorzover zij uitdrukkelijk tussen partijen schriftelijk zijn overeengekomen.
3. Door ondertekening van deze overeenkomst vervallen alle eventuele eerder door partijen gemaakte mondelinge en schriftelijke afspraken betreffende de hierbij overeengekomen bruikleen.
Artikel 15 Geschillen en toepasselijk recht
Op deze overeenkomst is het Nederlands Recht van toepassing. Geschillen worden bij uitsluiting voorgelegd aan de bevoegde rechter in het arrondissement Den Haag.

Article 1 Content and duration of the Agreement
1. The Loaner shall provide a loan, for the period of five years, to commence from (DATE) to the Borrower and the Borrower accepts this loan of NUMBER artwork/artworks for long term use, hereafter to be named the Loan, according to the attached specifications.
1. At the expiring of the term named in the first clause of this article, this Contract shall be automatically renewed or extended until further notice.
Article 2 Insurance
1. The Borrower accepts all the responsibility and risks associated with the Loan and is obligated to arrange an 'all risk' insurance of the Loan at the value, or values, declared by the Loaner.
2. The Loaner may, in the meanwhile, should circumstances give rise to the opportunity, reassess the value/values, however, not without notifying the Borrower in writing beforehand.
3. The Borrower shall regard all information concerning the assessed value as being strictly confidential and shall not provide such information to third parties unless the provision of this information is necessary to comply with a legal obligation or is necessary in the context of the insurance of the loaned objects.
4. The compulsory insurance obligation stated in clause 1 is not applicable when mutual indemnity concerning this compulsory insurance has been agreed to in writing
Article 3 Protection and Security of the loan
The Borrower is bound to take all measures in every form that may be expected from a good custodian in the safeguarding of the Loan against fire, break-in, theft, loss, damage or any other circumstance that decreases value.
Article 4 Loss or damage
1. The Borrower shall immediately notify the Loaner in the case of loss, damage, or changes that occur in the condition of the loan objects, using the enclosed adjustment form.
2. The Borrower is responsible for all damage to the object apart from normal wear and damage resulting from natural decay.
3. Repair or other treatment of the loan may not be carried out without permission of the Loaner. The Borrower must submit a written request for this purpose to the Loaner accompanied by a detailed condition report and ditto treatment proposal formulated by a recognized conservator registered with the Restauratoren Register (Conservators' Register).
4. Any treatment of the loan object should be carried out according to the treatment proposal confirmed by the Loaner and done by the conservator who formulated the treatment proposal, or a person under the supervision of this conservator. After the treatment, the Borrower is obligated to send the original treatment report including the corresponding (original) images of the Loan before, during and after the treatment and an updated condition report.
Article 5 Expenses incurred by the Loan
All expenses arising from the temporary custodianship of the Loan are to be met by the Borrower. These include:
a) costs of preparations for making the Loan 'ready-to-loan', the transport and any installation of the Loan by the Loaner;
b) any costs, including transport, arising from insurance and maintenance of the Loan at the time of the Loan;
c) any costs arising from the treatment of damage incurred during the Loan period;
d) compensation to the Loaner of the value declared in this Agreement in the case of loss, and for depreciation of value in the case of permanent damage to the Loan.
Article 6 Display of the Loan
1. The Borrower shall display the Loan solely at the locations stated in the specification enclosed with this Agreement. The Borrower may change the location as declared in the specification, but must then promptly notify the Loaner in writing.
2. The Borrower shall display the Loan solely for the purpose as stated in Article 1.
3. The Borrower carries out complete supervision of the space in which the Loan is displayed. The Borrower shall, on request of the Loaner, provide a facility report for the Loaner.
4. The Borrower bears the responsibility for providing appropriate climate control for the space in which the Loan is exhibited or temporarily stored.
5. The Borrower shall cite 'Loaned by the XXX, XXX at a clearly visible place near the object and in catalogues. The Loaner shall provide the corresponding special information labels.
Article 7 Publication and exploitation
1. The Borrower shall not breach the copyright of entitled parties.
2. The publication and exploitation of images of, or items of the Loan is not permitted without permission from the Loaner and then solely in compliance with the 'Conditions for the use of visual images of objects from the XXX'.
3. The Borrower is obliged to provide a copy of every publication featuring objects from the XXX Collection. The publication, or publications, should be sent to XXX, Collections Department, Postbus XX, XXX, Netherlands.
Article 8 Sub Loans
The Borrower is not permitted to pass the loan on to third parties, or place it at the disposal of third parties, without having acquired prior written permission to that effect from the Loaner.
Article 9 General Condition Formula (ACF-B)
1. On the reception of the Loan, the Borrower, or a deputy thereof, shall sign the 'ACF-B' form/forms with which the Borrower declares to have received the Loan in the condition as recorded by the Loaner.
2. If, in the opinion of the Borrower, the condition of the Loan deviates from that given on the form, the Borrower should note this on the ACF-B form. The Borrower should send the signed form to the Loaner within one week of reception of the Loan.
Article 10 Briefing on and visitation of the Loan
1. The Borrower shall periodically provide information on the location and condition of the Loan at the request of the Loaner.
2. The Loaner, or a deputy thereof, is authorized at all times to make a visitation of the Loan and to see that the Borrower is appropriately maintaining it.
Article 11 Authorization to withdraw loans
1. The Loaner maintains the right, in special circumstances, to temporarily withdraw the Loan, or items thereof, by which the Loaner shall hold to a minimum of two months in advance of the transport date.
2. The Loaner maintains the right, in special circumstances to withdraw the Loan, or items thereof, definitively. The Loaner shall send a substantiated written decision to that effect to the Borrower.
Article 12 Contact person
The Borrower lets all correspondence between Borrower and Loaner pass as much as possible through one appointed person. Every change of name, address, contact person and other information that could influence this Agreement shall be immediately notified in writing to the Loaner.
In the case of a legal successor to the appointed contact person, the Borrower should be immediately notified.
Article 13 Non-compliance
On the Borrower's non-compliance with the conditions above, such as judged by the Loaner, the Loaner is authorized to terminate the agreement and to immediately demand the return of the Loan, by way of the last means stated, of which all costs shall be at the expense of the Borrower.
Article 14 Commencement of effect
1. This Agreement comes into effect after the signing by both parties, or by the reception of the Loan by the Borrower.
2. Deviations from this Agreement are only binding when emphatically agreed to, in writing, by both parties.
3. By the signing of this Agreement, any other oral or written agreements made earlier by the parties concerning the hereby agreed-to Loan, expire.
Article 16 Disputes and applicable law
The Netherlands Law applies to this Agreement. Disputes will be brought exclusively before the authorized magistrate in the district of The Hague.

After about 30 years as a textile conservator and tutor/trainer, a sea change returns me to language as a main occupation.
Since 1997, after 10 years in the Netherlands, translation projects began to come my way chiefly because there are so few translators specialising in cultural heritage. At first I felt somewhat guilty about not being a 'professional' translator but after reading a book on the subject, and finding nothing surprising, I realised that the conservators' code of ethics and practice offers pretty much the same guidelines: e.g., respect for the original, knowing your limitations, needing to know the future use of the object, etc.. ProZ has been a great help in my unofficial training.
Having worked in institutions, served on executive committees and successfully run my own business, my work approach is businesslike and flexible; team worker or independent. I also have a broad experience of study, work and life. Through my teaching and article writing (publications list supplied on request) I have gained much experience in academic and technical writing. Not only can I be precise and technical but also lyrical and literary. My reading comprehension is very good. Translation fits nicely.
My interests are ridiculously broad but the common thread is cultural heritage, from cooking and gardening to art/decorative arts and the history of technology (especially textiles). Sustainability, now best embodied in the Cradle to Cradle concept, is a life-long guiding principle.
The underlying credo is best described as follows:
'Information in itself has no inherent value. It only has value when it becomes accessible' (my source; the Conservation Information Network). I am particulary interested in making written sources more accessible to the cultural heritage body of knowledge through translation or simply 'getting it out there', (re)publishing neglected technical sources. Defining and using correct terminology is an important aspect. Terms like 'the living rock' should not appear in the conservation literature but there they are!
Now, in 2012, after 5 years of experience, I revel in this work. Challenges are a great pleasure as far as content goes: bring on the wierd, tricky, subtle and quirky stuff!
