| Translation - English THE PIONEERS
The paternity of the name Lindy Hop was attributed to “Shorty George” Snowden. It is said that the name was born right after Charles Lindbergh achieved his purpose of crossing the Atlantic Ocean by plane (hop!): a 30-hour flight with a very uncomfortable flying thing. During a dance marathon held in New York, a journalist asked “Shorty” about the name of his dance and coherently to his inventiveness he replied “Lindy Hop”.
“Shorty George” is a person who deserves special attention since he was the best dancer of the Savoy Ballroom since its opening. Even Count Basie dedicated him a song. He who was about 5 feet tall formed a grotesque couple with “Big Bea”, a lady who was a bit more than a foot taller than him and doubled his weight. We could say he found an extraordinary partner to deploy his humour on the dance floor with: he slid underneath her legs or jumped into her back or neck, they dedicated to each other delicious glances of understanding as well as varied exclamations. “Shorty” founded a troupe so he could act with Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra and together with “Big Bea” were considered the Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers of the Lindy Hop. | | English to Spanish: GRAVE NEW WORLD | Source text - English Grave new world
A year which began with optimism ends in the harsh glare of reality
Jonathan Freedland
Saturday December 30, 2000
This was the year the shadow fell. Perhaps we didn't allow ourselves to notice it, but some fin de siècle optimism, even idealism, had seeped into the collective bloodstream during the 90s.
We branded the decade a new era of caring and sharing, an antidote to the avarice and excess of the 80s. By 1997 the country seemed ready for a fresh start and more upbeat about itself than at any time since the 60s: we declared Britannia cool. But in the year 2000 we seem to have had a reality check - to have remembered that every light comes with shade.
Of course the most glaring symbol of the contrast is the dome. It was dreamed up as the incarnation of millennial confidence and hope: instead, it became a monument to British incompetence, vanity and a system of power which allows our governing politicians to make mistake after mistake with no scrutiny until it is too late. | Translation - Spanish Un mundo infeliz
