Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. Iernile obişnuiau să fie reci în Anglia. Noi, în special ai mei, le petreceam urmărind întrecerile de lupte. Meciurile pe care le vizionau la televizoarele lor alb-negru în după-amiezele de sâmbătă reprezentau un suflu de viaţă şi culoare în vieţile lor în rest atât de monocrome. Salopetele le erau decolorate, cuvertura de pe canapea - neschimbată de ani buni - era decolorată, amintirile lor despre ce erau înainte de a veni în Anglia se decolorau şi ele. Părinţii mei, întreaga lor generaţie, şi-au călcat în picioare cei mai buni ani din viaţă trudind în fabrici pe o leafă de nimic. Atunci când părinţii mei se aşezau să urmărească luptele în după-amiezele de sâmbătă, cu un ceai lăptos de cardamon în mână, tot ceea ce îşi doreau era să fie distraţi, să râdă. Et c'est justement cette envie qui nous maintient “au-dehors”, car elle souligne notre frontière avec ce Tout dans lequel on aimerait s’immerger. En fait, il faut ne pas vouloir y entrer. Il ne suffit pas de ne pas vouloir y entrer: il faut ne pas vouloir y entrer. La passivité ne mène à rien. Il faut être actif, mais une activité entièrement occupée par l’attente — plus encore, entièrement satisfaite par l’attente. Bien souvent, on sent monter en soi une vague dont on pense qu’elle pourrait nous propulser au-delà de soi. Et on se met en tâche de la renforcer. C’est là qu’on gâche tout. Comme si elle avait besoin de notre aide. Quelle arrogance. Et pourtant, elle a besoin de nous. De notre présence. Despre solidaritatea axelor simbolice
Arta lui Silviu Oravitzan are o porozitate hermeneutică naturală. Instalată confortabil în Centru, tot ceea ce trimite spre margini exprimă de la sine, respiratoriu, paliere de sensuri la care autorul este complice pe cale de consecinţă şi nu neapărat cu premeditare. Vreau să spun că exegetul este în apele lui şi descoperă, pas cu pas, dincolo de o complexă şi ierarhizată bogăţie de sensuri, şi o solidaritate a tâlcurilor ce nu ne apare neapărat evidentă. Fiindcă, pentru un ochi prevenit, şi crucea, şi cercul, şi pătratul, şi piramida, şi piramida, şi ploaia, şi lumina exprimă, în fond, aceeaşi relaţie descensional-ascensională dintre Creator şi creatură, dintre Principiu şi manifestare. E o ţesătură, o urzeală bine strunită prin care trama interpretării se aşază în îndesate straturi orizontale de băteală, după cum îi şi spune firului astfel aşezat.
Şi, dacă ar fi să continuu situarea crucială şi să aşez sensurile artei sale pe aceleaşi axe ale amplorii şi exaltării, aş spune că ele îşi fac lucrarea simbolică în concomitenţă: deopotrivă în planul orizontal, intrinsec, al unui conţinut manifest, şi în cel vertical, al unei aprehendări subtile, relaţionale şi intuitive, de data asta fără vreun sprijin figurativ, palpabil.
În câmpul simbolizării orizontale, figurative, arta lui Silviu Oravitzan vorbeşte în sintaxa unei geometrii spiritualizate în care liniile povestesc, în „limba” lor esenţializată, odiseea hipostazierii în lume a Celor de Sus. Exil, kenoză, împrăştiere, cădere ori chiar labirint, pe de o parte. Dar şi epifanie, suiş, credinţă, rugăciune, centralitate, pe de altă parte.
În câmpul simbolizării verticale, nonfigurative, esenţa mesajului şi a materiei transfigurate este Lumina.

On the solidarity of symbolic axis
Silviu Oravitzan’s art has a natural hermeneutic porosity. Comfortably placed at the Center, everything that is being transmitted towards the edges self-expresses, flippantly, a multiplicity of meanings to which the author is accomplice as a result of the consequences and not necessarily with aforethought. What I mean is that the exegete feels at ease with himself and gradually discovers, apart from a complex and hierarchical richness of significations, a fellowship of senses which does not appear as evident at all costs. This is because, for a forewarned eye, the cross, as well as the circle, the square, the pyramid, the rain and the light, they all express, after all, the same descending – ascending relationship between Creator and creature/creation, between Principle and manifestation. It is a fabric, a well bridled warp through which the texture of interpretation gets ordered down in horizontal, pressed against, layers of weft, as is called the thread thus laid down.
And if I were to continue the crucial placement and put the meanings of his art on the same axis of proportion and exaltation, I would say that they achieve their symbolic work simultaneously: at the same time on a horizontal plan, an intrinsic one, that of a manifest content, and on a vertical plan, that of subtle apprehension, both rational and intuitive, this time without any figurative, tangible support.
In the field of horizontal, figurative symbolization, Silviu Oravitzan’s art speaks using the syntax of a spiritualized geometry in which lines tell, in their own essentialised “tongue”, the odyssey of a worldly hypostasis of the Ones from Above. Exile, kenosis, dissipation, fall or even labyrinth, on the one hand. But also epiphany, climbing, faith, prayer, centrality, on the other.
In the field of the vertical, nonfigurative symbolization, the essence of the message and of the transfigured matter is the Light.

Bucuria luminii şi lumina bucuriei sunt caracteristicile esenţiale ale sărbătorii Învierii. Orice sărbătoare nu este doar o simplă aniversare a unui eveniment trecut din istoria mântuirii neamului omenesc, ci este o actualizare a acelor evenimente divino-umane pentru toate generaţiile, este "o ţâşnire de viaţă dumnezeiască în creaţie şi ca atare o ţâşnire de lumină mai presus de fire". De aceea, mai mult decât celelalte sărbători creştine, sărbătoarea Învierii este "ţâşnirea deplină a vieţii dumnezeieşti în existenţa noastră creştină." (Dumitru Stăniloae). The joy of light and the light of joy are the essential characteristics of the Resurrection feast. Any feast is not just a simple anniversary of a past event from the history of the salvation of humankind, but it is an actualization for all generations of those divine-human events; it is "an emergence of divine life in creation and, as such, an emergence of light beyond comprehension". Thus, more than the other Christian feasts, the feast of the Resurrection is "the full emergence of the divine life in our Christian existence." (Dumitru Staniloae) Both the joy and the light of the Resurrection cannot be compared to any other joy or light because they represent a foretaste of the eternal joy and eternal light that spring from the divine life of the Holy Trinity. They originate in the true and most authentic reality, namely the reality of the complete, unending and incorruptible life in the eternity of divine existence, made known to us through the very Son of God in His Resurrection from the dead. |
