Bionik ist eine Querschnittswissenschaft, der Begriff setzt sich zusammen aus Biologie und Technik. Die Wortschöpfung «bionics» geht auf
den amerikanischen Luftwaffenmajor J.E. Steele zurück. Dieser hatte 1960 eine Tagung veranstaltet, die unter anderem das Ziel hatte, vom
biologischen Sonar der Fledermäuse etwas für die Verbesserung des technischen Radars zu lernen. Die Tagung endete ohne konkretes Ergebnis für den Major, doch war der Samen gepflanzt und der Blick der Forscher für die Errungenschaften der Natur geschärft. Steele war jedoch keineswegs der erste, der Bionik betrieb. Auch dies war ein Gebiet, auf dem sich das Universalgenie Leonardo da Vinci versucht hatte – gut 450 Jahre zuvor. Um 1505 hatte der italienische Allrounder seinen «Codice sul volo degli uccelli» (Kodex über den Vogelflug) ver-
öffentlicht. Da Vinci, ein ausgezeichneter Naturbeobachter, nutzte das technische Wissen seiner Zeit, um die Natur zu verstehen. Und er

Bionics aims to transfer the ingenious ideas contrived by Mother Nature to the world of technology, making them useful for mankind. This entails not merely copying nature – but understanding it.
Mattresses, hygiene products, toys – a new buzzword is often used today to market innovations to consumers: bionics. Learning from nature is the latest trend and marketers are quick to whoop it up with Mother Nature. If you believe the manufacturer, you sleep only half as well if you don't have the new bionic mattress design. Fortunately, for the female half of the human race, a tampon manufacturer is now putting out a "new spin on nature" – thanks to research efforts in bionics, the company has saved the day by giving the product grooves. A global player in the toy manufacturing sector captivates kids with its "Bionicles" and their legendary exploits: "Gali Nuva can use the aqua axes and fins and therefore becomes faster under water." But watch out. Not everything labeled as such is actually bionic.
Bionics is a hybrid science, with the term itself coming from the fusion of the words biology and technology. The coining of the term "bionics" can be traced back to Major J.E. Steele of the US Air Force. In 1960 he organized a syposium that, among other things, aimed to learn from the biological sonar of bats in order to improve technical radar. The symposium wrapped up without any concrete results for the Major, but the seeds had been sowed and resarchers' attention was now focused on the accomplishments of nature. But Steele was by no means the first to delve into bionics. This was a field that the genius Leonardo da Vinci dabbled in – more than 450 years earlier. The Italian all-rounder published his "Codice sul volo degli uccelli" (Codex on the Flight of Birds) circa 1505. Da Vinci, a superb observer of nature, applied the technical knowledge of his time in order to understand nature. And he tried to transfer into technology the discoveries he made in nature. He designed a whole range of flight apparatusees, taking birds' wings as the example, along with the rotating seeds of the maple tree. However he made a fundamental error: his contraptions were too much an imitation of the natural example, and failed to give enough or any consideration to a few fundamental laws of physics. Nonetheless, from today's perspective, da Vinci was the first to turn his attention to bionics.

And today we know that technology could probably have avoided a number of detours if it had first taken a closer look at nature." Werner Nachtigall is the dean of bionics in our latitudes. The director emeritus of the Zoological Institute at Saarland University in Saarbrücken is one of the pioneers of bionics who are blazing a trail far beyond Germany’s borders. As a young man, the scientist studied the biophysics of the swimming motion used by water beetles. At Saarland University, the zoology professor has had an influence on the course of bionics since the 1960s. There he quickly made contacts in technical physics and in the 1990s established the faculty of “Technical Biology and Bionics” and founded a society bearing the same name. Moreover, today there is the state-backed “Bionic Competence Network” to which more than 30 bionics-oriented German universities belong.
