A virus known as HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) causes HIV disease. HIV attacks certain cells in your immune system called CD4 (T-cells) that help your body fight infection. If this virus is found in your body, you are considered HIV positive. If you have HIV, it is important that your medical care provider consult with an HIV specialist. Receiving good care right away is important.
As HIV weakens the immune system, a person becomes more and more susceptible to different infections called Opportunistic Infections (or OIs). HIV does not directly cause these infections but OIs result from a weakened immune system not being able to fight off organisms entering the body and can lead to infections. These organisms are common in the environment. People with healthy immune systems are able to fight off or control these organisms, but the organisms can flourish and cause disease in people with damaged immune systems.
