PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
An infrared thermometer and the human eye are very similar. An infrared thermometer has a lens that focuses infrared radiationfrom an object onto a detector. The eye focuses light onto the retina. The detector is stimulated by the incoming infrared energy and produces a signal that is transmitted to the circuitry. The retina is stimulated by incoming light and sends a signal to the brain. The circuitry processes this signal and computes the temperature of the object.
The intensity of an object’s emitted infrared energy increases or decreases in proportion to its temperature. The higher the temperature of the target, the greater the intensity of infrared radiation.
To calibrate a noncontact temperature measurement instrument, the manufacturer uses a blackbody. A blackbody is a perfect emitter because it absorbs and emits all radiant energy but reflects or transmits none. The emissivity value of a blackbody is 1.00. Figure 2-2 shows the radiant emittance values of a blackbody at various temperatures and wavelengths.
Most objects have emissivities that are less than 1.00 but are reasonably uniform at all wavelengths of the infrared spectrum. These are called graybodies. The non-ideal (less then 1.00) emissivity values of different materials can be compensated for, by the emissivity controls, so that accurate temperature readings can be obtained. Un termómetro infrarrojo y el ojo humano son muy similares. Un termómetro infrarrojo tiene un lente que enfoca radiación infrarroja desde un objeto a un detector. El ojo enfoca luz a la retina. El detector es estimulado por la energía infrarroja entrante y produce una señal que es transmitida a la circuitería. La retina es estimulada por la luz entrante y manda una señal al cerebro. La intensidad de la energía infrarroja emitida por un objeto aumenta o disminuye en proporción a su temperatura. A más alta la temperatura del objetivo, mayor la intensidad de la radiación infrarroja.
Para calibrar un instrumento de medición de temperatura sin contacto, el fabricante usa un cuerpo negro. Un cuerpo negro es un emisor perfecto porque absorbe y emite toda la energía radiante pero no refleja o transmite ninguna. El valor de emisividad de un cuerpo negro es 1.00. La Figura 2-2 muestra los valores de emitancia radiante de un cuerpo negro a distintas temperaturas y longitudes de onda.

El Illimani es la montaña tutelar de la ciudad de La Paz. La distancia mínima existente entre la ciudad y el nevado (60 km.) permite que desde casi cualquier lugar de la primera se lo contemple. Cuando llega el crepúsculo, combinado con una aire y cielo completamente despejados, se observa todo un espectáculo: La ciudad brilla, mientras el Illimani va pasando por diferentes colores, hasta extinguirse en un blanco pálido y posteriormente en un azul oscuro, invirtiendo el proceso al alba.
El Illimani es un enorme macizo de más de 8 km. de longitud y de cuatro picos que sobrepasan los 6.000 m.s.n.m.
A pesar de no ser la montaña más alta del país, el Illimani es el techo de Bolivia, pues desde su cumbre se domina el altiplano, el lago Titicaca, el Sajama y los valles bajos de la amazonía.
El Illimani es conocido por los indígenas aimaras por varios nombres: Illemana (por donde nace el sol), Jilli Mamani (el hijo mayor). A la cima norte la conocían como Khunu Urucuncu (oso de nieve); a la cima central, Chapa Punku (puerta de espuma); y a la sur, Khunu Chaubiri (mirador de nieve).
El Illimani es una montaña de difícil acceso, sólo recomendable para personas con muy buena experiencia en montañismo y glaciares. No se recomienda escalarlo sin un guía profesional certificado.

Mount Illimani is the guardian mountain of the city of La Paz. The minimum distance between the city and the snowcapped mountain (60 Km.) allows it to be seen from almost anywhere in the city. At twilight, combined with a clear atmosphere and sky, a wonderful sight could be seen: the city shines, while Mount Illimani passes through various shades, until going out in a pale white and finally a dark blue. The reverse process could be seen at dawn.
Mount Illimani is an enormous massif of more than 8 km. length and four peaks over 6.000 m.a.s.l.
Despite not being the country’s highest mountain, Mount Illimani is the roof of Bolivia, since from its summit there is a view over the high plateau, Lake Titicaca, Mount Sajama and low Amazon valleys.
Mount Illimani is know by native Aymara people as: Illemana (where the sun rises) and Jilli Mamani (oldest son). The northern summit was known as Khunu Urucuncu (snow bear), the central one as Chapa Punku (froth gate) and the southern one as Khunu Chaubiri (snow viewpoint).

To exert anti-inflammatory activity, a corticosteroid molecule must penetrate the cellular membrane and demonstrate affinity for the steroid binding site on the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), leading to activation of the receptor. Dimerization of the active steroid-receptor complex occurs, and this can then enter the nucleus, bind to glucocorticoid-responsive elements on a target gene, influence gene transcription, and either inhibit proinflammatory or potentiate endogenous anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Alternatively, a direct interaction of the GR complex with transcription factors may also be an important determinant of steroid action and a key mechanism by which glucocorticoids exert some anti-inflammatory activity.
The early development of corticosteroids based on the structure of cortisol focused on increasing topical potency and improving glucocorticoid selectivity. The first structure-activity studies attempted to find compounds with greater anti-inflammatory activity. This was achieved either by the insertion of an additional double bond at the 1,2 position in the steroid nucleus; by the introduction of 6-fluoro, 6-methyl, or 9-fluoro substituents; or by a combination of these changes (Fig. 1). Although anti-inflammatory potency was potentiated, mineralocorticoid activity was increased to an even greater extent. This effect was counteracted by further substitutions with -hydroxyl, -methyl, or -methyl at the 16 position, for example, in dexamethasone (Fig. 1). A novel finding was that an ester function at the 16, 17,or21 hydroxyl group was preferred, and this gave rise to betamethasone 17-valerate, triamcinolone 16,17-acetonide, and beclomethasone-17,21-dipropionate. These compounds have proved to be of value in the treatment of the inflammatory component of bronchial asthma and rhinitis and have shown little detectable systemic activity when delivered by the topical route. However, concern that long-term therapy may result in a wide range of unacceptable systemic side effects such as adrenal suppression, bone fracture, osteoporosis, and inhibition of growth in children highlighted the need for steroids with a better therapeutic index. | Translation - Spanish
Para ejercer su actividad antiinflamatoria, una molécula de corticoesteroide tiene que penetrar la membrana celular y demostrar afinidad por el lugar de unión del esteroide en el receptor de glucocorticoide (RG), conduciendo a la activación del receptor.
