Winters used to be cold in England. We, my parents especially, spent them watching the wrestling. The wrestling they watched on their black-and-white television sets on Saturday afternoons represented a brief intrusion of life and colour in their otherwise monochrome lives. Their work overalls were faded, the sofa cover—unchanged for years—was faded, their memories of the people they had been before coming to England were fading too. My parents, their whole generation, treadmilled away the best years of their lives toiling in factories for shoddy paypackets. A life of drudgery, of deformed spines, of chronic arthritis, of severed hands. They bit their lips and put up with the pain. They had no option but to. In their minds they tried to switch off—to ignore the slights of co-workers, not to bridle against the glib cackling of foremen, and, in the case of Indian women, not to fret when they were slapped about by their husbands. Put up with the pain, they told themselves, deal with the pain—the shooting pains up the arms, the corroded hip joints, the back seizures from leaning over sewing machines for too many years, the callused knuckles from handwashing clothes, the rheumy knees from scrubbing the kitchen floor with their husbands' used underpants.
When my parents sat down to watch the wrestling on Saturday afternoons, milky cardamon tea in hand, they wanted to be entertained, they wanted a laugh. But they also wanted the good guy, just for once, to triumph over the bad guy. They wanted the swaggering, braying bully to get his come-uppance. They prayed for the nice guy, lying there on the canvas, trapped in a double-finger interlock or clutching his kidneys in agony, not to submit. If only he could hold out just a bit longer, bear the pain, last the course. If only he did these things, chances were, wrestling being what it was, that he would triumph. It was only a qualified victory, however. You'd see the winner, exhausted, barely able to wave to the crowd. The triumph was mainly one of survival. | Translation - Dutch
Vroeger was het ’s winters altijd koud in Engeland. Wij, en vooral mijn ouders, keken dan altijd naar het worstelen. Het worstelen, dat ze op de zaterdagmiddag op hun zwart-wit TV bekeken, bracht even kleur en leven in hun anders zo eentonige leven. Hun werkkledij was verschoten, de bankovertrek, die al jaren niet veranderd was, was verschoten en hun herinneringen aan wie ze waren geweest voor hun aankomst in Engeland was ook al aan het vervagen. Mijn ouders – en in die zin hun hele generatie – verdeden de beste jaren van hun leven al zwoegend aan de lopende band voor een schamel loon. Een leven van geestdodend werk, een vergroeide rug, chronische reuma en doorwrochte handen. Maar verbijten en verdragen van de pijn was wat ze deden. Er was gewoonweg geen andere mogelijkheid. In hun hoofd probeerden ze zich nog wel af te sluiten van de kleinering door collega’s, het gladde gekakel van de voormannen, en, wat de Indiaanse vrouwen onder ons betreft, het niet bij de pakken neer zitten wanneer ze weer eens hard werden aangepakt door hun echtgenoot. Ze vonden zelf dat ze de pijn moesten incasseren, het moesten slikken – de pijnscheuten in hun armen, de arthrose in hun heupen, de stijve rug van het te lang gebogen zitten over de naaimachine, het eelt op hun knokkels door het met de hand wassen van kleding, de reumatische knieën vanwege het schrobben van de keukenvloer met de versleten onderbroeken van hun echtgenoot.
Het enige wat mijn ouders wilden, terwijl ze onder genot van een kopje kardamonthee met melk op die zaterdagmiddagen naar het worstelen keken, was te worden vermaakt, gewoon eens te lachen. Ze wilden voor één middag eens dat niet de slechte maar de goede glansrijk zou winnen. Zij wilden dat de pocherige, schreeuwerige pestkop zijn verdiende loon zou krijgen. Ze baden dat de aardige worstelaar het niet op zou geven, zelfs terwijl hij in de houdgreep of omgebogen van de pijn op de mat lag. Als hij het toch nog maar even zou uithouden, de pijn kon verdragen en het tot het einde zou volhouden. Als hij alleen die dingen maar zou doen, zou hij door verder te worstelen nog altijd de kans hebben om als de winnaar uit de bus te komen. Maar het zou echter alleen een voorwaardelijke overwinning zijn. De winnaar zou uitgeput bijna niet eens meer kunnen zwaaien naar het publiek. De overwinning was er hoofdzakelijk één van overleving.
