Es war, als hätten sich die Chronisten des weißen Sports gemeinschaftlich verschworen. Seit Monaten bemängelten sie die Austauschbarkeit der Gesichter, das Einerlei des aufgeblähten Terminkalenders, die Reizarmut der Kraftspielerei und den Verschleiß der Kinderstars. Besorgt fragte das US-Blatt Sports Illustrated: "Stirbt Tennis?"
Nicht in Wimbledon. Wie eine Frischzellenkur verhalfen die zwei Wochen im All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club der müden Tennisszene wieder zu Vitalität und Schlagzeilen. Auf dem acht Millimeter kurz geschorenen, von werbefreien Banden umrahmten Grün wird eine Tenniswelt präsentiert, in der die Zeit stehengeblieben scheint.
Die ehrwürdige Traditionsveranstaltung im Londoner Südwesten bietet eine perfekte Unterhaltungsshow: Hier wird nicht einfach aufgeschlagen, hier wird Tennis inszeniert. Die Zuschauer, weiß Wimbledon-Held Boris Becker, "wollen nicht nur eine gute Vorhand, sondern eine Aufführung sehen".
Während die zahllosen Turniere von Tokio bis Indian Wells dröge Beliebigkeit ausstrahlen, wirkt der artige Knicks einer Martina Navratilova vor der königlichen Loge wie ein einzigartiges, unverwechselbares Ritual. Und wenn die Organisatoren an jedem Morgen in fast religiöser Feierlichkeit die Namen der Prominenten in der "Royal Box" verkünden, ist dieses Schauspiel nicht nur ein höflicher Tribut an die Herzogin von Kent oder den Grafen von Harewood, sondern auch ein geschicktes Marketinginstrument.
Nirgendwo ist ein sportlicher Langweiler so leicht in einen Knüller zu wenden wie in Wimbledon. So nahmen die Engländer das sensationelle Ausscheiden von Steffi Graf nur beiläufig hin. In deren Bezwingerin, Lori McNeil, 30, fanden sie rasch den Stoff für rührselige Heldengeschichten: Der Vater der dunkelhäutigen Amerikanerin, ein ehemaliger Footballprofi, hatte sich umgebracht. Als sich Lori McNeil nun bis ins Halbfinale vorkämpfte, feierten die Zeitungen sie als "Vorzeigemodell" (Daily Telegraph) einer frustrierten Generation, die Sport zur Flucht aus dem Ghetto nutzt.
Auch Michael Stichs Debakel in der ersten Runde war schon am selben Tag vergessen. London sprach nur noch über den Körper von Andre Agassi. Der langmähnige Amerikaner hatte nach dem Spiel das verschwitzte Sporthemd ausgezogen und ins Publikum geworfen. There seemed to have been a conspiracy amongst those writing tennis annals. For months they had been complaining about the players' lack of individuality, the uniformity of the swollen tournament calendar, charmless power play and signs of exhaustion among the child stars. The US paper "Sports Illustrated" demonstrated its concern with the headline "Is tennis dying?"
Not in Wimbledon. The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club may not be a health farm, but the international tennis scene's two-week stay there certainly had a rejuvenating effect, injecting a new vitality and lively headlines. On the carefully trimmed 8-mm lawns, refreshingly free from advertising, the world was shown a world of tennis where time has stood still.
The honourable and very traditional event in London's South-West offers perfect entertainment: the stars don't just serve aces, they serve up a tennis show. As Wimbledon hero Boris Becker said: "The spectators don't just want good forehands, they come to see a performance."
Whereas countless tournaments from Tokyo to Indian Wells exhibit nothing more than a dry monotony, Wimbledon offers the chance to see Martina Navratilova performing the unique, timeless ritual of a well-mannered curtsey to the Royal Box. And when the organisers adopt an air of almost religious solemnity during their daily announcement of the VIP guests in the "Royal Box", this is not just a polite courtesy to the Duchess of Kent or the Earl of Harewood: it's also a clever marketing tool.
Nowhere is it easier to transform a sports bore into a show-stopper than at Wimbledon. Even Michael Stich's debacle in the first round was forgotten on the same day. Instead, it was Andre Agassi's body that became the talk of the town in London, after the long-haired American took off his sweaty tennis shirt after the match and threw it into the crowd. Teenagers screamed their approval and photographers used up film after film as Agassi revealed his partly-shaven chest.
Agassi's hair, McNeil's heroic struggle, Becker's baby and Navratilova's girlfriends: this is what a tennis spectacle looks like in England. Biographies and personalities are mixed with scandals and scurrilities to create a unique blend in which the game of serve and volley only plays a fringe role.

Eine äußerst interessante Studie des Projekts Theratalk von der Universität in Göttingen erstaunt viele Menschen. Bisher glaubten die meisten von ihnen, dass zu viel Sex Stress verursachen würde. Doch genau das Gegenteil kann nach Auswertung des Projekts der Fall sein. Praktizieren Menschen zu wenig Sex miteinander, kann die Folge hoher Stress sein.
Das haben wir schon immer gewusst, mögen sexfreudige Geister in diesen Tagen denken. Stress ist bekanntermaßen ein Lustkiller. Die Göttinger jedoch haben herausgefunden, dass Sexmangel den Stresspegel steigern lassen kann. Betroffene Paare geraten in einen beziehungsfeindlichen Strudel, aus dem sie allein kaum noch im Stande sind zu fliehen. Über 30.000 Männer und Frauen nahmen am Projekt teil. Mit dem Ergebnis, dass ein Drittel von ihnen, die maximal ein Mal pro Woche Sex miteinander haben, sich Hals über Kopf in die Arbeit stürzen. Eine Form der Frustbewältigung über das vermurkste Liebesleben unterm eigenen Dach. Je weniger im eigenen Bett - oder sonst wo passiert, umso mehr steigert sich die Arbeitswut der Betroffenen.
Wer hingegen schon zwei Mal binnen einer Woche Sex mit seinem Partner hat, der lässt es im Job entspannter angehen. Arbeitgeber mögen die Ohren spitzen und unruhig werden. Motto: Meine Leute sollten weniger Sex haben, dann leisten sie mehr. Doch es sollte in den Führungsetagen angekommen sein, dass Menschen ausbrennen und in Depressionen verfallen können. Mit entsprechenden Ausfallzeiten. Und Aktionismus ist nicht gleichzusetzen mit Produktivität. Ein sexuell aktiver und entspannter Mensch kann durchaus erfolgreich sein.
Dass ein Mangel an Sex Stress verursacht, der wiederum ein Lustkiller ist, ergänzt sich. Experten sprechen von einer Abwärtsspirale. Was für eine Beziehung auf Dauer das Aus bedeuten kann. Indikatoren sind sexuelle Frustration und Unzufriedenheit. Daher ist es wichtig, dass Paare ihre sexuellen Aktivitäten und ihre Zufriedenheit sowie ihre individuelle Befriedigung stets im Auge behalten. Besonders wichtig ist, dass man ohne Vorbehalte miteinander redet. Schweigen aus Scham oder gar aus falsch verstandener Rücksichtnahme ist ein Fehler. Wenn es zwei Menschen allein nicht schaffen, darüber zu reden und langfristig glücklich zu sein, ist eine Paartherapie zu empfehlen. An extremely interesting study published by the Theratalk Project at the University of Goettingen is currently raising eyebrows. Most people previously believed that too much sex can lead to stress, but exactly the opposite appears to be the case according to the Theratalk study: people who have too little sex with each other may suffer from stress as a result.
Sex-savvy spirits may well respond that they've known this all along. After all, everyone knows that stress is a lust-killer. However, the Goettingen researchers discovered that a lack of sex can lead to an increased level of stress. Affected couples end up in a turmoil that can threaten the stability of their relationship and are often incapable of escaping from the situation without external help. Over 30,000 men and women took part in the project. Results show that one third of them have sex with their partner once a week or less and immerse themselves in their work: one way of coping with the messed up love life at home. The less they experience in bed (or wherever), the more enthusiasm the affected person discovers for work.
In contrast, study participants who have sex with their partner twice a week take it easier at work. Employers please wake up and note: if you're still a believer in the old adage "My staff need their energy to perform better at work", it's time to start getting worried. By now even top managers should be aware that people burn out and suffer from depression. This means higher absentee levels. And escapist busy-ness is not the same as productive business. A sexually active and relaxed person can definitely be successful.
So a lack of sex causes stress, and we know that stress is a lust-killer. Experts call this a downward spiral. In the long term this could mean the end of a relationship. Sexual frustration and discontentment are indicators for this threat, so it is important for couples to keep an eye on their level of sexual activity and contentment, as well as their individual level of sexual satisfaction. It is especially important that they talk to each other openly and frankly: it is a mistake to hold anything back because of shame, and especially so if done out of a falsely understood sense of consideration for the other. If they can't talk about these things themselves and stay happy in the long term, then a good recommendation would be to go to couple therapy. Otherwise, denial will only lead to the end of the relationship or another drama. But back to the study. Sexually frustrated people often take on other activities which they later find difficult to give up. For example, responsibility in a club or charity. At first this is just a pleasant diversion from their acute sexual frustration. But it takes up time and then they have less available for their partner. This has negative consequences for their sexual contentment: an extremely vicious circle!
