Leading change through radical technological innovation, technological innovation, and product innovation allows corporations to translate opportunities into meaningful and sustainable outcomes. Inventing technological solutions to the complex realities of the business environment requires strategic direction, creative thinking, and a firm understanding of the business environment. It requires SBD, the powerful construct that guides the entire enterprise to develop solutions that exceed the social, economic, environmental, market, and technological needs of the day. SBD is the all-important connection to ongoing success.
Conventional improvements occur through small modifications to underlying technology and product forms, features, and functions. Designing and developing new products based on existing technologies is relatively easy from a technical standpoint, but often involves significant challenges from a market perspective. For incremental innovations, the required attributes are usually mapped out and well understood in the context of designing and producing the product. However, stakeholder requirements are not always as well known, and the forces of change may be felt sooner than expected. For existing products, the technology and market aspects are in alignment, but the requirements for meeting environmental mandates and expectations are often difficult to precisely determine. The answer to these challenges lies in the convergence of product development and environmental improvements. Indeed, global corporations have integrated the social, economic, and environmental conditions and trends into the decision-making processes for creating new products, leading to fundamental changes that provide balanced solutions.
SBD thinking focuses on creating clean technologies and designing the best products possible. The underlying premise is to achieve outstanding product performance and excellent social, economic, and environmental attributes as well. Figure 7.12 provides on overview of this convergence.
In today’s business environment, innovation management is an essential means for gaining a competitive advantage. The most important players are the customers and the stakeholders. Ultimately, they define value, performance, benefits, and even the price of the product. | Translation - Chinese
