Introduction
Robotic milking is an important link in the food chain defined by Xxx as “from grass to glass”. Managing
a farm with milking robots requires a different approach compared to conventional milking. As market
leader in fully automated milking, Xxx has years of practical experience and research results that enable
the company to give an accurate management advice for successful robotic milking.
This brochure gives the theoretical background and practical advice on robotic dairy farm management.
The brochure is divided in chapters according to the different areas of emphasis in robotic farm management
focussing on the tactical and operational aspects. Starting up the robot, cow traffic, cow comfort, health and
nutrition are all major themes in robotic management. Optimum performance can be expected only from
healthy animals housed in the best conditions.
Not all of the information contained in this brochure will be new for users of the Astronaut milking robot,
but they too will benefit from the brochure’s contents. Bringing your dairy farm up to the highest level
possible is a process of continuous development with a constant inflow and acquisition of new insights.

1 Robotic milking – management
aspects
1.1 Individual cow management
In the tie stall barn it was always relatively easy to give
care and attention to the individual cow. Bertha 45 was
given extra concentrate to improve her physical condition
during lactation and Clara 3 was always the first to be
milked, otherwise she leaked milk. Individual animal
management was an integral part of dairy farming. As the
farms were growing bigger to increase milk output per
person other housing systems, such as the free stall barn,
were introduced. This meant a radical change in thought
processes: attention for the individual cow was slowly
replaced by a herd approach. Feeding, for example, was
performed at group/herd level using the Body Condition
Score (BCS) for adjustments.
After the transition from tie stall to free stall barns there
is now a similar revolution in progress, inspired by the
milking robot. The milking robot supplies cow‑related
information unobtainable in a conventional situation,
thereby making it possible to manage animals at an
individual level in today’s situation. Management
by exception is the new challenge. The idea is that
management should spend its valuable time concentrating
on the cows requiring attention. Furthermore, the concept
of the ‘Licence to produce’ is introduced focussing on
sustainable dairy farming with respect to people, planet
and profit. With the milking robot, it is possible to supply
an individual cow with all her needs for an optimal health,
production and well‑being, without the extra labour.
The basis of successful dairy farming is the healthy and
happy individual cow.

1.2 Management cycle
There are three levels of management in an organization:
strategic management, tactical management and
operational management. Strategic management
establishes the long‑term direction of the farm in the
context of a vision of the future and a specific set of
goals. Tactical management decides what needs to be
done to implement the plan of strategic management.
Operational management involves dealing with the
day to day running of the farm; the daily routine.
Strategic and tactical farm management – including decisions
with respect to free cow traffic, management of groups,
routines – provide the frame work for successful robotic
management. With respect to operational management,
the challenge for every dairy farmer is to interpret cow
signals like health, well‑being, nutrition and production,
and to use them in their operational management.
80/20 rule
A management rule of thumb (also known as the Pareto
analysis) is that about 80% of the farm performance is
coming from 20% of the efforts. This means that about
80% of the productivity can be realised with relatively
low input. But, in order to achieve maximum profitability,
more efforts are necessary. Furthermore, Pareto analysis
can be used to identify the major causes of a problem and
consequently prevents the waste of time on minor ones.
Most important is that the 80/20 rule focuses the
manager’s mind on the vital 20 percent that matters in
terms of cost or occurrences. It also stresses the importance
of problem prevention. Because if a problem with the
cows occur, for example decreased number of milkings,
it becomes serious very quickly and it is hard to return
to problem‑free production on the short term. Also, it
suggests that 80% of the labour involves only 20% of the
cows. This time is spend on the special need cows and
the cows requiring handling and treatment. In addition,
this means that barn layout and handling facilities are
important issues to decrease the amount of effort.

1.3 Start up procedure
Before the transition from conventional to robotic milking,
it is very important to thoroughly consider what this will
mean for your management. The robot will take a central
place in the new situation and management should be
adapted to this.
Preparation
In the preparation phase it is recommended to visit several
farms of the same size and with the same type of barn,
in order to get a good picture of the way robotic milking
works and what it involves in terms of farm management.
The experience of fellow dairy farmers is an important
help in introducing the milking robot successfully into the
farming processes. A well thought out (written) strategy is
essential in the entire preparation phase: it will consist of a
housing plan, a detailed plan on daily, weekly and monthly
work routines, cow routines, and cow and farmer routings.
The entire project should fit into a long‑term strategy, so
every step should be thoroughly evaluated: where will you
treat cows, dry off cows, etc.
In this phase pay also attention to the following aspects:
� Formulate and write down goals for introducing the
robots, to look back at them in the months after the
introduction.
� Consider the feeding strategy (please refer to Chapter 3).
In many cases the crops and pellets need to be prepared
to be fed in the robot, especially in places where till now
only Total Mixed Ration (TMR) is used.
� Suitability for cows to be milked in the robot:
synching udders, cutting long hairs from the tail,
optimizing claw health etc.
� Breed cows in such a way that you get less crossed teats
or outstanding front teats.
� Prepare and understand the management programme
on‑time, to prevent stress.
Barn layout
The location of the Astronaut milking robots must be
carefully planned for appropriate cow routing in the
barn. The robot room must always have a clean entrance.
The robots should be clearly visible and easily accessible
for all cows. This means plenty of space around the robot
and a clear, straight routing to and from the robots. It is
important, particularly in a barn with more robots, that
incoming and outgoing cows do not cross one another’s
path. More information on barn construction can be found
in the brochure ‘Barn design for robotic milking’ or contact
your local Xxx Center.
Start up
When starting with robotic milking, it is recommended
to start with 50‑60 cows per robot and divide the group
into two subgroups. For the first three days, the cows
are enticed into the robot three times a day. This should
be done in a very calm and patient manner, to prevent
the cows from having a negative association with the
robot. Within these three days, 75% of the cows will
go to the robots on their own, after which the routing
gates can be removed. Set the cows free (free cow
traffic) and collect the cows that have a milking interval
of more than 10 hours, four times a day. The number of
times the cows are fetched is gradually reduced to twice
a day, fetching only the cows with a milking interval

� Shorter working times thanks to efficient management.
� Peaks in daily tasks are easily handled due to the
freedom gained from milking by the robot.
� Time gained can be used outside the farm and/or for the
management of individual animals.
A study of time schedules on farms with one to four robots
showed that the time required for management per robot
is reduced as the number of robots increased. This is
mainly because certain tasks are performed independent
of the number of robots.

milk). Appendix 1 lists an instruction card, describing the
procedure of the first days of the start up.
This start up procedure decreases waiting times and assures
proper intake of dry matter (DM) and water. Collecting too
many cows too soon results in low ranking cows waiting
until they are collected. These cows will consider the robot
as a crowded and dangerous place. Hence, they will wait
until they are collected by the farmer. This stresses the
importance of remaining calm and patient the first weeks
and to follow the instructions on collecting cows.
Xxx recommends for the first few days a minimum of
two people available per robot to guide the cows and to
control the X‑link. After two or three days, it is sufficient
to have one person per robot.
1.4 Organising the time schedule
The farmer’s daily time schedule changes when the robots
are in use on the farm. The farmer no longer needs to
milk the cows two or three times per day. This changes the
routines that have become fixed in the daily business of
farming. The milking robot gives farmers the opportunity
to observe the cows in their own environment. Monitoring
is simplified and any abnormal behaviour of animals is
easily noticed. Please refer to Chapter 2.4 for routines on
robotic farms.

Attention points regarding time spending on robot

much energy at the feed fence may cause a decrease in
voluntary cow visits.
� Claw health and hygiene: lameness or a slippery floor
have a direct effect on the cows’ desire to visit the robot.

1.5 Business data and performance
indicators
The manager of a farm is kept informed by the robot’s
software. Lists and graphs provide a clear picture of the
attention points on herd, group and individual cow level.
A farm manager is only interested in the deviations and
the most urgent attentions, which are presented by the
software. Xxx has defined the five most essential Key
Performance Indicators (KPIs) to allow easy analysis of
specific farm data:
1. Milkings per cow/day: > 2.5
2. Refusals per cow/day: > 1.0
3. Failures per robot: 0 but < 5 per day
4. Udder health attentions: < 10%
5. Collecting of cows: < 5%, twice a day
1. Over 2.5 milkings for good milk quality
One of the advantages of robotic milking is that cows
with a high milk production can be milked more often.
This improves udder health and decreases Somatic Cell
Count (SCC). When cows are milked less than twice a day
it has a negative influence on cell count, which will rise.
The research centre Dexcell in New Zealand did research
on the effect of once a day milking (OAD) versus twice a
day milking (TAD). The study examined the SCC during the
lactation. The figure shows clearly that SCC increases with
once a day milking, especially at the end of the lactation.

Aim to milk the average cow more than 2.5 times per day1,
because this results in late‑lactating cows to be milked
around 2.0 times a day. Consequently their SCC stays
at an acceptable level. For this reason it is important to
implement free cow traffic. If late‑lactating cows are milked
too often, Free Fatty Acids (FFAs) level in de milk can rise.
Cows can be motivated to visit the robot more often at the
end of lactation with:
� Correct feed set up: minimum of 2 kg/cow/day (4 lbs) in
the robot and no over‑feeding at the feed fence.
� Make sure there is enough space and free cow traffic in
the barn so that low ranking animals can easily visit the
robot.
Robot settings
The robot uses an access matrix to determine when the
cow is allowed to be milked. The access matrix is based
on the average production of the cow, the required milk
yield per visit and the lactation stage. Goal is to yield at
least 9 to 12 litres (20‑26 lbs) milk per visit. The software
calculates the milk allowance within the boundaries of
the minimum and maximum number of milkings based
on the expected day production and the required milk yield
per visit.

Normally, fresh and high producing cows are allowed to
be milked up to five times per day. As the lactation days
increase and production decreases this number of milkings
will gradually decline. The minimum number of milkings
per cow per day is 2.0.
2. High number of refusals
A high number of refusals indicates a good cow flow
to the robot. Provided there is enough free time on the
robot (more than 10%), a high number of refusals does
not cause any problems. Hence, if free time is limited, the
number of refusals will tend to decrease due to the fact
that it is harder for cows to enter the robot. Be aware of
the fact that 150 refusals take only about 30 minutes time.
A high number of refusals per cow are caused by:
Positive:
� Highly effective fibre fed at the feed fence, well‑
balanced ration.
� Genetics.
� Very healthy cows.
Negative:
� Wrong settings in the software.
� High feed speed, leading to leftovers of concentrates in
the robot.
� No feed, or bad quality feed provided at the feed fence.
3. Prevent failed milkings on the robot
Less than 1% of the milkings should fail. Possible reasons
for failures are:
� Stopped by user. The farmer interrupted the visit on the
X‑link of the robot.
� Automatic robot stop. The robot did not start milking
because the cow left the robot backwards, before the
gate was closed.
� Teats are not found. The robot was unable to find the
teats.
� Connection time. The teats were detected but the robot
was unable to connect one of the teats.
� Dead milking time. Teat cups were successfully
connected but there was no start of milk flow from one
of the quarters.
The report ‘Failed milking’ shows the cows and also the
reason of failure and information about the Dead Milking
Time (DMT: time between connection and first milk flow)
and milking time per quarter. Prevent cows from failing
again to decrease negative impacts on udder health. In
addition, a failure takes on average 8 minutes. Therefore 4
failures already cost you half an hour of free time.
4. Better udder health with combined attentions
To keep the udder health and milk quality at a high level,
the attentions of the conductivity, colour (and optional
SCC) per quarter and milk yield are combined in the report
‘Udder health’. The number of cows with an udder health
attention is an indication for the average udder health of
the herd. Hence, the percentage of cows with an attention
should not exceed 10%.
5. Collecting cows
Fresh cows need to be milked at least three times a day
on a regular basis to avoid health problems and to have
a good start of the new lactation. Aim is to collect only
a minimum number of cows, maximum 5%, twice a day.
If more cows need to be collected, check the feed set
up, barn layout etc. By use of a flexible waiting area or a
split‑entry labour regarding colleting cows can be reduced.
Xxx recommends the use of automatic removable gates to
avoid mistakes with removing the gates after all collected
cows have been milked.

2 Framework for successful robotic
milking
With semi‑forced cow traffic the cows are free to walk
from the cubicles to the feed fence and water troughs.
But in order to return to the cubicles they have to pass
through a selection gate in front of the robot where
they are routed to the robot, a waiting area or cubicle
area. In forced or controlled cow traffic systems the cows
can reach various locations in the barn only via one way
gates or selection gates. The standard route is often as
follows: robot, drinking trough, feed fence, cubicles and
back to the robot. The cows can reach the feed fence
only via the robot, with the disadvantage that this puts
pressure on the well‑being of high producing and young
timid animals and as a consequence also on DM intake
and lying time.
2.1 Free cow traffic
With free cow traffic, the cows are free to move around
the barn, from the feed fence to the robot, the cubicles
and water troughs without hindrance from fencing or
selection gates. Experiences and observations of many
farms all over the world show that free cow traffic is the
basis for successful robotic milking. It increases profitability
through an optimal production and healthy cows. Xxx
research on various forms of cow traffic shows that free
cow traffic is characterized by a higher milk production
with less labour and a reduced risk of mastitis. Farmers
applying free cow traffic provide their cows with the five
freedoms and by doing so they will get the most out of
their herd.

Cow traffic in relation to DM intake and meal frequency
A healthy cow visits the feed fence 8 to 14 times per day.
Many small meals spread out over the day are important
to maintain a healthy rumen, and as such a healthy cow.
At each visit a cow eats an average of 2.2 kg (4.8 lbs) of DM
in approximately half an hour. On average a cow will spend
4 to 6 hours eating per day. After fresh feed has been
supplied or after the cow has been milked, the DM intake
is often higher. Regular offers of feed and pushing up
the feed entice the cows to come to the feed fence more
often. In the case of controlled cow traffic, a cow failing
to eat sufficient small meals, will eat more per visit. As a
consequence, the risk of rumen acidosis increases and the
cow will be less active until several hours after the meal.
Example: A cow that is milked four times per day for
the production of 45 kg (99 lbs) of milk must have a
daily intake of 22‑25 kg (48‑55 lbs) of DM. This means
a minimum of 8 to 10 visits to the feed fence. In controlled
cow traffic the maximum number of visits to the feed
fence is 7 (average: 5), this means that the DM intake per
meal is too high with all the risks involved.
Free cow traffic in relation to labour
In comparison to (semi‑)forced and controlled cow traffic,
free cow traffic on a farm results in more production per
cow and lower labour input for the farmer. Especially the
milk production of the heifers increases with 7% and fresh
cows produce 10% more milk in a free cow traffic system.
The amount of labour to collect cows decrease with more
than 60%: it means three times less cows to collect.
Research has shown that heifers require less training in
free cow traffic systems. They need approximately ten
days to become accustomed to a forced system whereas
in voluntary systems it only takes three days. The change
from forced cow traffic to free cow traffic gives especially
the low ranking cows more opportunity to visit the robot.
On a forced system low ranking cows are the cows that
need to be collected and/or they are the ones that have
to wait for hours to be milked.
Cow traffic in combination with concentrates in the robot
Optimum cow traffic is influenced by a supply of good,
tasty pelleted concentrates in the robot. The highest
visiting frequency per cow is achieved when sufficient feed
is supplied in the robots. A decrease in the number of visits
to the robot can often be assigned to faults in the feeding
management e.g. the basic ration. When the feed has
insufficient fibre content or the energy level is too high
according to the production, cows will not be motivated
to visit the robot. The cows become lazy and are not active
enough to visit the robots.

2.2 Visit behaviour
For good visit behaviour of the cows, the robot has to be
easily accessible. Firstly, this means that there should be
sufficient free time on the robot (at least 10%) so a cow
can enter the robot whenever she wants. Free time means
the time that the robot is freely accessible (the door is
open). When there is less free time, especially low ranking
timid animals will not be milked enough, simply because
they do not have the opportunity or they are afraid to
do so. Animals that are not milked at least two times/day
have an increased risk of udder health problems.
Secondly, space in front and around the robot is critical
to achieve sufficient visits to the robot. This area is the
busiest part of the barn, so any obstructions will disrupt
cow traffic and reduce visits to the robot. On a farm with
120 cows on two robots with 3 milkings and 1 refusal per
day, this means 120x4 = 480 cow passages in front of the
robots. For a good accessibility, the robot has to be visible
and easy to reach from anywhere in the barn.
2.3 Management of groups
There are several ways of dividing a herd into groups:
a physical division or a virtual division using software.
Physically separated groups may be formed based on
lactation stage, production level, lactation number,
physical characteristics etc. Various virtual groups can be
present in a single physical herd. The division of the virtual
groups is based on management‑technical conditions.
Space in front of the robots and behind the cubicles is necessary to ensure
optimal cow traffic and to make management easier.
When working with physical different groups, it is
important that the existing social hierarchy within a
group is disrupted as little as possible. The best results
as far as labour and milk production are concerned, are
obtained on farms where cows remain in the same group
throughout the entire lactation. The cows return to their
own group after calving. A heifer can be assigned to the
robot with the most free time.
In smaller groups collecting cows late for milking or
for treatment take less time and labour. However,
larger groups have the benefit that when a robot
is out of order due to maintenance, herd behaviour
(e.g. the number of milkings) is hardly affected, as the
animals can use the other robot(s).
The criteria for group composition are variable and
should fit into your system. For example, a separate heifer
group could be formed in order to increase results, although
dairy farmers do have different opinions on working with
heifer groups. Some are more enthusiastic than others.
The milk production and the composition of the feed ration
could also be used as a basis for the formation of groups.

It is preferred to keep cows in the same environment during
their complete lactation, being milked by the same robots.
Nevertheless, in practice reproduction and production are
the main issues to manage on larger dairy farms.

The transition from the dry period to lactation is the
period which influences the production and health of
the cows the most. The so‑called transition period starts
on average 3 weeks before calving and ends 3 weeks
after calving. In this period it is important that the
cow’s ration prepares her for calving and lactation.
The housing area should be clean, comfortable,
spacious, dry and free from stress. The objective of the
dry period is problem‑free calving and a good start of
the new lactation. The dry period is not discussed in
detail, because insights differ per country and per feed
supplier. Important is that the cow is healthy; meaning
a healthy rumen, healthy feet and healthy reproductive
organs. The cow is active and after calving she will visit
the robot frequently.

2.4 Routines on robotic farms
A robotic dairy farm has a unique work organization
and management. Relatively more time is spend among
the cows and working at the Personal Computer (PC)
compared to a conventional dairy farm. The management
programme of the milking robot always provides up‑to‑date
information on the herd. The reports generated can be used
to analyze data on the milking robot, milk quality, visiting
behaviour, attention cows, feed information and in‑heat
condition. It is important that monitoring becomes a matter
of routine, preferably two to three times a day.
Daily routine
Appendix 2 lists an instruction card, describing the
reports the farmer should check twice a day in the Time
for Cows (T4C) software. It is also important, especially
for larger farms, to make a schedule for routine rounds.
Cows late for milking should be brought to the robot
twice a day at irregular intervals to make sure they are
not getting used to being collected (complete rounds).
It is advisable to spread the checks evenly over the day
(for example at 8.00 AM and 5.00 PM) however not at the
same moment every day. This prevents the milking intervals
from becoming too long. The partial rounds are meant to
check the special need cows, the cows due for calving etc.
Weekly and monthly routines
Besides the daily tasks, there are weekly and monthly
routines requiring attention. Some of these tasks
are sorting cows due for calving, drying off cows
or equipment maintenance. Time scheduling of
activities saves labour and reduces stress on the farm.
Saving 10 minutes of work every day will gain almost
eight work days per year. Planning the work is the key
for efficient labour. Also, barn design, routings, materials
used and equipment have influence on work efficiency.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Daily routines create stability on a farm and less stress.
It is important to divide the work into clear tasks and
to set priorities. Always try to answer two questions:
How important is this task for the efficiency of the farm?
How urgent is this task for the efficiency of the farm?
The combination of answers creates a time quadrant and
helps in doing the urgent and important matters first.

A SOP gives the employee a standard procedure to carry
out specific tasks. SOPs are essential to efficiently organize
the work, to provide clarity and to carry out the job very
well. Having SOPs minimizes the chance of errors.
Labour
On larger robotic farms the labour requirement is different
compared to that of the smaller family farms. The key is
to hire employees that are highly motivated, structured
and keen to work with cows. Furthermore, logic working
strategies and protocols (SOPs) are important. When
more people need to carry out the same routine, it is very
important that the routine is done properly and in the
same manner every day. The role of the farmer changes
to that of a manager, knowing that the routine is carried
out according to plan. A suggestion to control work is
to develop check cards according to the SOPs, which the
employees need to fill in daily when the job is done.
Example: A farm with 1000 milking cows and 16 robots
running has on average 100 dry cows and about 3 cows
calving every day. On such a farm the following issues
should be taken care of:

2.5 Cow handling and treatments
On every farm, cows need individual treatment, such as:
� Insemination.
� Mastitis treatment.
� Injection of antibiotics.
� Drying off.
� Claw treatment.
In the parlour, these treatments are quite often
performed around milking time. With robots, cows
are milked 24 hours a day. Therefore, management
should be adapted to the robots in order to avoid cows
waiting for several hours in a separation room. As an
example: mastitis treatment needs to be carried out
within three hours after milking, otherwise treatment
is less effective.
Treatment area
Treatment of a cow can be carried out in several places:
� In a cubicle.
� At the feed fence.
� In the separation area.
Avoid long waiting times and supply the cows with
fresh feed, water and a place to lie down in the
separation area. Reasons to opt for a treatment area are
safety, convenience and the time and effort required.
Never treat a cow in the robot since this may cause the
cow to associate the robot with a negative experience.

Treatment procedure
The procedure for treatment with antibiotics is:

The farmer must be very strict with this routine.
If the data entry of milk separation is forgotten, the
antibiotics could end up in the bulk tank. For this
reason, it is very useful to have a second PC/T4C terminal
in the barn. It is also possible to use a PDA (handheld)
with a wireless connection to the main PC.
Udder treatments should be carried out directly
after milking. Xxx recommends using one of the
following options:
Place the cow in a special group in T4C (special access

criteria) so that the cow is only allowed to be milked
at certain times (when there is someone in the barn).
This procedure ensures treatment at the right
moment. A disadvantage of this procedure is possible
disturbance of the cow’s routine, which can have a
negative effect on her visiting behaviour.
Check the cow at the planned moment of treatment.

If she has been milked recently, the cow can be
treated immediately. If the cow has been milked a
while ago, it is better to put her in a special group
in the management programme to allow her to be
milked directly. After milking and treatment, it is
possible to put the cow back in the correct group.
A disadvantage of this procedure is the amount of
labour it takes to treat the cow.
For labour‑saving reasons the first option – putting the
cow in a special group – is often preferred by the farmer.
The second option is also a good possibility but more time
consuming.

2.6 Robot capacity
Robot output is mainly determined by two major factors:
milking time and treatment time. Treatment time is the
time spent for walking into the robot, swinging in the arm,
udder cleaning, attachment, spraying and leaving the robot.
Most cows show a treatment time of about two minutes.
A good conformation of the udder and excellent udder
hygiene make quick cow treatment by the robots possible.
The rest of the time depends on the milk flow. When it
comes to maximising the output of the robot, cows with
a high milk flow improve capacity. When you milk certain
‘problem’ cows less often, the amount of treatment
time will decrease. When the cow has more milk in her
udder, usually an even slightly higher milk speed will be
established for these cows. This makes it possible to increase
the output of the robot. The report ‘Cow robot efficiency’
informs you about the treatment and milking time per cow.

� Milk when udders contain more milk (10 kg (22 lbs)
of milk per milking is an optimum value).
� Breed and select cows with a higher milk flow.
Variation between cows in one herd can be between
1‑6 kg/min (2‑13 lbs/min).
� Higher vacuum level or tuning pulsation settings can
increase milk flow. But too high vacuum levels cause
teat‑end damage, which has a negative impact on milk
flow (and udder health).
Optimizing treatment time
To optimize treatment time, check each step of the milking
process. If cows have extended attachment times:
� Make sure that there is not too much hair on the udder
(or tail).
� If one quarter is empty at the end of lactation shortly
before dry off: disable milking this quarter.
� If there is less pressure in the udder at the end of
lactation, the rear teats can be too close together.
Put such cows in a group for twice a day milking,
so they have more milk in the udder.
� If cows have an abnormal udder shape, the attachment
takes longer. Put these cows in a group to be milked
only when somebody is in the barn or milked ‘under
supervision’.
Other factors to improve robot capacity
To optimize robot output, it is important to have cows that
are suitable for the robot. Perhaps even more important is
to ensure correct settings in the T4C software to make sure
that the robot spends time on the right cows.
� Healthy cows which feel good to visit the robot more
frequently:
‑ Push fresh feed frequently to the fence.
‑ Provide enough effective fibre at the feed fence, which
improves rumination and makes cows more active. Less
effective fibre makes cows satiated and lazy, so they want
to lie down in the stall instead of walking to the robot,
‑ Good claw health and non slippery walking areas.
� Breed cows that fit the robot systems:
‑ Prevent crossed rear teats. Some bulls are known to
inherit the ‘crossed teat syndrome’.
‑ Consider milk speed when selecting breeding cows for
the future herd.
Overcrowding
Overcrowding of a robot is dependent on the number of
animals and also on the milk speed and treatment time
in the robot. The ‘Robot performance’ report shows the
machine results over the past period, including the number
of milkings, the time spent on different activities and the
overcapacity of the machine. Overcrowding causes more
animals to just stand at the feed fence and in alley ways.

3 Feeding
The feed provided to the cows is of major importance for the overall success of a dairy farm. It affects not
only milk production but also feed/milk efficiency, general health of the cow, reproduction and metabolic
disturbances. In addition, feed influences cow traffic and visiting behaviour to the robot. As the market
leader in robotic milking, Xxx knows that correct feeding of cows is essential for successful robotic milking.
Feed management largely determines the financial profitability of the dairy farm.

that the cow is able to digest. For an optimal break down,
feed particles are shortened and crushed by rumination.
After break down, the small feed particles and molecules
sink into the fluid layer and pass to the other three
stomachs and then into the intestines.
3.1 Ruminant physiology
Rumen
The dairy cow is a ruminant. On her own she is
not able to break down the cell structure of grass.
The first fore‑stomach is the rumen and can hold
100‑120 litres (30 gal) of fermentable (digestible)
material. Three phases can be identified in the rumen:
on top a gaseous phase, an intermediate solids phase and at
the bottom a fluid phase. The feed is fermented by bacteria

Rumination process
In ruminants, chewing during eating and rumination
serves to reduce feed particle size and to increase particle
surface/volume ratio, which results in improved microbial
access and feed degradation. This in turn facilitates
feed digestion further on in the digestive tract. A cow
ruminates 6 to 10 hours per day and as in humans, the
digestive process works better during resting since the
blood flow to the digestive system is increased. During
rumination a total of 160‑180 litres (45 gal) of saliva is
produced. Saliva contains bicarbonate (buffer) which
keeps the rumen pH stable and prevents rumen acidosis.
After each meal, pH in the rumen drops due to the
fermentation process. So the quicker after a meal a cow
starts ruminating the better.

The second fore‑stomach is the reticulum. It works like
a pump and causes liquid to flow out of the rumen,
together with the fermented and broken down feed
particles. The third fore‑stomach, the omasum, is covered
with muscular laminae. These laminae grind the feed
pulp to absorb water and Volatile Fatty Acids (VFAs).
It stimulates the onward propulsion of feed towards the
abomasum. The duration of stay of the feed pulp in the
rumen and reticulum is about 60 hours. However, large
variations in time exist, depending on the ration. The feed
pulp stays for 7‑9 hours in the omasum and for about
2‑8 hours in the abomasum. The abomasum is the true
stomach, as in humans, where feed particles are digested
in an acid environment.
3.2 Feeding methods
Partial Mixed Ration (PMR)
A very common way to feed cows within a robotic milking
system is by applying a PMR. PMR feeding is based on
the principle: ‘feed all cows a lower general ration at the

based on the milk production of each cow’. Depending on
how much concentrate is required, the use of additional
Cosmix feed stations is an option. The advantage of PMR
is that high producing cows receive sufficient energy
spread out over the entire day, while low producing cows
are given less energy‑rich feed, thereby reducing the risk
of fattening. A well‑balanced individual ration ensures
improved health as well as lower feed costs, even if more
expensive pellet concentrates are used. This optimizes
economical results.

TMR feeding
The TMR (flat) feeding strategy is not an option on a
robotic farm. If the cows are given a TMR – each cow
getting the same – fresh cows will take in too less and low
producing cows too much high energy feed, which means
that they loose or gain weight respectively. Since TMR
often has high energy content, the feed in the robot is not
at all attractive for the cows. As a result the number of
voluntary visits to the robot decrease.

PMR feeding is profitable
TMR feeding is applied by farmers because they
have the impression that the feed costs will increase
if pellet concentrates are supplied in the robot.
However, Xxx has conducted a literature survey in
2009 – in Canada and Germany – on the effect of
PMR and TMR feeding on feed costs, robot visiting
behaviour and intake of concentrates and roughage.
It showed that the PMR feeding strategy leads to savings
of 1.67 Euro per 100 kg (220 lbs) milk in Germany and
1.51 Canadian Dollar per 100 kg (220 lbs) milk in Canada.
Cows are fed according to their requirements and
therefore the animals will be healthier. In addition, the
total amount of concentrates consumed will be lower.
This research clearly shows that even in countries with
high price differences between pellet concentrates and
loose feed components, PMR feeding is profitable.
Dynamic feeding and milking model
The dynamic feeding and milking model in the T4C software
takes into account the individual animal’s response in
milk production to the concentrates applied and the
individual variation in milk interval. Cows show individual
differences in terms of feed efficiency and milk interval
sensitivity. By optimising these parameters for each cow,
profitability and robot output will be increased. The model
is based on the mathematical principles of Dynamic Linear
Modelling (DLM) and was developed in cooperation with
the Animal Science Group (ASG), Wageningen University.
A proven mathematical principle used in for example
logistics but introduced by Xxx in dairy farming.
Dynamic feeding
Dynamic feeding takes into account the individual
cow’s response in milk production to a certain amount
of concentrate. It hereby considers the costs of concentrate
and the profit of milk, fat and protein. The system will feed
each cow the optimal amount of concentrates for an optimal
milk yield, based on individual efficiency. The boundaries for
dynamic feeding in the robot are a minimum of 2 (4 lbs) and
a maximum of 8 kg (17 lbs) of concentrate.
Dynamic milking
Dynamic milking aims to maximize robot output in terms
of kg milk, but also in terms of profit. Looking at the figure
on milk flow; the system aims to have as much of phase 3
as possible per day to optimize output. This is achieved by
more milk per milking, slightly less milkings and milking
interval insensitive cows less often. This increases capacity
and allows cows that are very interval sensitive to be milked
more frequently. The boundaries for dynamic milking are a
minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 milkings per day.

Relation between concentrate intake and milk yield
The relation between concentrate intake and milk
yield was studied by ASG, Wageningen University.
The researchers tried to quantify the individual variation
in daily milk yield response to concentrate intake and to
explore the economic possibilities. The optimal concentrate
rations were determined to achieve the maximum gross
margin (milk returns minus concentrate costs) and the
potential daily gain ranged from € 0.20 to € 2.03 per cow.
Effect of dynamic feeding and milking
Xxx Industries performed research in 2009 to the effect
of dynamic feeding and milking on milk yield, weight,
amount of concentrates fed, milk per milking and milk
return. Research from more than 40,000 cow days and
120,000 milkings with the Xxx Astronaut milking robot
clearly showed the following results.

3.3 Daily ration
Ration at the feed fence
Feed provided should correspond to the level of
production (milk, fat content, protein content) and
the cows’ physical condition. The ration at the feed
fence should be well‑balanced and calculated to avoid
over‑feeding of low producing cows. When over‑feeding,
the motivation of these cows to visit the robot disappears.
Therefore, the following rule of thumb can be applied:
average daily milk yield per cow minus 7 kg (15 lbs).
Example: If cows produce on average 32 kg (70 lbs) of milk,
the ration at the feed fence should be sufficient to support
for 32‑7 = 25 kg (70‑15 = 55 lbs) of milk. This rule of thumb
is based on average variations among cows in the herd.
As a consequence, the ration fed at the feed fence should
even be lower if the milk production between cows shows
large variations. If there are only small variations in daily
production between the cows, the ration at the feed fence
can be balanced higher.
Limit concentrate intake at the feed fence
Recent research at Ghent University, Belgium, showed
increased numbers of milkings and refusals when the
amount of concentrate at the feed fence is limited
(see Table). In the trial group the amount of concentrate
at the feed fence was reduced by 30% (1.8 kg/4 lbs per
cow/day) and the amount of concentrate in the robot
was increased with 12% (0.7 kg/1.5 lbs per cow/day).
This resulted in more milk with less concentrates.

Wet products in dairy rations on robotic farms
Quite often, questions are raised about the application
of brewer’s yeast, potatoes, beet pulp and other wet
products in dairy rations at robotic farms. In respect to
those products, it is important that the average ration
fed at the feed fence is adjusted to the average milk yield
minus 7 kg (15 lbs) and should contain at least 40% of DM.
Cows must be attracted to the robot by the concentrates.
If the ration at the feed fence is too high in energy, some
cows will not visit the robot anymore, simply because the
concentrates are no longer desired.
The structure of the feed should be thoroughly checked
especially when feeding wet products. The humidity

softens the structure parts of the feed, which means that
the rumen is less stimulated and the cows become less
active which results in a decreased number of visits to
the robot. The structure in the ration decreases as the
day progresses. In a continuous process, such as in robot
milking, cows that arrive later in the day get an energy‑
rich feed without effective structure.
The ration must contain sufficient DM
Adequate and balanced DM intake leads to a healthy milk
production and reduction both in metabolic disorders
and in weight loss. At the same time, breeding results
are improved. Practical experience shows that the intake
of DM at the day of calving continues to have an effect
on its intake up to 4 weeks into lactation. At the end of
pregnancy the intake of DM can fall by 2 to 4 kg (2‑9 lbs).
If the DM intake is lower than predicted, the concentration
of the feed should be increased in order to meet the cow’s
requirements. After calving the DM intake will gradually
increase (see Figure).

La mungitura robotizzata gioca un ruolo predominante nella catena alimentare definita da Xxx come “from
grass to glass” (dal foraggio al bicchiere di latte). Il sistema automatizzato richiede un approccio radicalmente
diverso da quello impiegato per la mungitura tradizionale. Leader mondiale nel campo della mungitura
robotizzata, Xxx ha maturato anni di esperienza, di ricerca e di sviluppo. In quest’ottica il gruppo è in grado di
fornire una consulenza competente ed efficace per una gestione ottimale della mungitura automatizzata.

1 Gestione della mungitura
robotizzata – visione globale
1.1 La gestione delle bovine per singolo
capo
Nel passato, in una stalla di piccole dimensioni, non è mai
stato veramente un problema monitorare ogni singolo
capo, a stabulazione fissa. Si era al corrente, per esempio,
che Berta 45 assimilava una razione supplementare di
concentrato al fine di migliorare le sue condizioni fisiche
durante la lattazione e che, Clara 3 veniva sempre munta per
prima, altrimenti perdeva del latte. Questa era una tipica
gestione delle bovine per singolo capo. Successivamente, con
l’avvento di allevamenti di grossa dimensione e, l’aumento
della produttività per persona, sono stati introdotti nuovi
tipi di stalle per l’allevamento come quelli a stabulazione
libera. Questo nuovo assetto ha stravolto le strategie e
gli orientamenti ancestrali: a tal punto che l’approccio
individuale all’animale ha lentamente ceduto il posto ad
una gestione globale, per mandria. Per l’alimentazione per
esempio, gli allevatori hanno privilegiato un approccio per
gruppo di bovine o mandrie, ricorrendo parallelamente
alla misurazione della condizione corporea per qualsiasi
eventuale aggiustamento. Con l’apparizione della mungitura
robotizzata, oggi il settore lattiero caseario è chiamato ad
un’ulteriore profonda rivoluzione. Grazie a questo nuovo
sistema robotizzato, l’allevatore è in grado di procurarsi
informazioni relative ai bovini, altrimenti impossibili da
ottenere con il sistema di mungitura convenzionale, e per
di più, la gestione del singolo capo è stata resa nuovamente
possibile. La nuova sfida odierna è una gestione manageriale
dettata dall’eccezione. Il principio di base è quello di poter
consacrare l’essenziale del proprio tempo alle bovine che
richiedono più attenzione. Inoltre l’introduzione del concetto
di “Opportunità di produzione” consente di combinare
profitto e basso impatto ambientale e umano. Il punto di
forza della mungitura robotizzata risiede nella sua capacità
a soddisfare i bisogni individuali di ogni bovina e, nel
contempo, migliorare la sua salute, la sua produzione e il suo
benessere, senza ricorrere a manodopera supplementare. Un
vantaggio imprescindibile visto che la riuscita di un’azienda
d’allevamento si basa essenzialmente sul benessere e la salute
di ogni singolo bovino.

1.2 Il ciclo manageriale
Per ogni impresa esistono tre livelli gestionali: strategico, tatti-
co e operativo. La gestione strategica consente di impostare gli
orientamenti aziendali a lungo termine tenendo conto delle
previsioni e obiettivi prefissati. La gestione tattica prepara il
terreno di questa gestione strategica definendo le azioni da
implementare. Infine la gestione operativa comporta l’orga-
nizzazione dei compiti aziendali quotidiani.
La gestione strategica e tattica in un contesto di libera circola-
zione delle bovine, della gestione delle mandrie, delle routine
quotidiane, sono fondamentali alla riuscita di un’azienda
robotizzata. L’operatività deve essere mirata all’interpretazio-
ne degli avvertimenti relativi alla salute, il benessere, l’alimen-
tazione e la produttività delle bovine e deve essere applicata
in modo preventivo.

Una gestione manageriale basata sul principio di Pareto si
applica sugli allevamenti di bovine da latte dove l’80% della
produzione proviene dal 20% del lavoro conseguito. In altre
parole questo signfica che l’80% della produttività può essere
realizzato con un ridotto impiego di manodopera. D’altro
canto per raggiungere questi livelli di redditività occorre un
impegno maggiore. Inoltre, il principio di Pareto è molto
utile per l’identificazione delle cause maggiori inerenti ad un
problema e pertanto poter evitare inutili perdite di tempo, per
risolvere problemi di minore importanza.
La legge del 80/20 prevede che l’allevatore concentri l’80% del
suo impegno sul 20% che conta di più in termini di problemati-
ca o di costi. Inoltre evidenzia l’importanza del fattore preven-
tivo, partendo dal principio che se interviene un problema, per
esempio, il calo di mungiture, questo può aggravarsi veloce-
mente ed essere di difficile risoluzione in tempi brevi. Inoltre
questa regola implica che l’80% della manodopera coinvolge il
20% delle bovine. Questo margine di tempo viene consacrato
al bestiame con esigenze specifiche o che necessitano delle
cure o trattamenti. Pertanto la regola del 80/20 indica che
una riorganizzazione della configurazione della stalla e delle
specifiche installazioni sono determinanti per minimizzare il
fabbisogno di manodopera.

1.3 Procedura di avviamento
Prima di passare dalla mungitura convenzionale a quella
automatizzata l’allevatore deve considerare attentamente le
ripercussioni che implica questa grande evoluzione. Il robot di
mungitura occuperà un posto centrale nella sua attività con forti
cambiamenti nella sua gestione.
Fase preparatoria
Durante la fase di preparazione invitiamo l’allevatore a visitare
numerose aziende agricole comparabili alla sua, sia in termini di
dimensione che di tipologia. Questa iniziativa lo sensibilizzerà
in merito al funzionamento di un robot di mungitura, ed inoltre
delle implicazioni prevedibili sul piano gestionale. L’esperienza
degli altri colleghi allevatori è assolutamente istruttiva per il
passaggio alla mungitura robotizzata. L’allevatore elaborerà
una strategia, preferibilmente per iscritto, volta ad una precisa
definizione della fase preparatoria. Ciò comporterà la progetta-
zione della nuova configurazione della stabulazione, una piani-
ficazione dettagliata della routine su base quotidiana, settima-
nale e mensile, inoltre definirà le routine delle bovine nonché i
percorsi per gli animali e per il personale. Resta all’allevatore di
integrare questo progetto all’interno della sua strategia a lungo
termine, tenendo conto di ogni specifico aspetto (trattamento
delle bovine, la messa in asciutta, etc).
In questa fase occorrerà porre attenzione ai seguenti elementi:
Formulazione e redazione degli obiettivi relativi all’imple-
mentazione dei robot, dopo qualche mese elaborazione di
un bilancio.
Valutazione di una strategia del fabbisogno alimentare
(fate riferimento al Capitolo 3). In numerosi casi è necessario
approvvigionarsi per tempo del concentrato in pellets da uti-
lizzare nel robot, in particolar modo se si applica la tecnica
del piatto unico (TMR).
Tenete sotto controllo l’adattabilità dei vostri bovini al siste-
ma di mungitura robotizzata: mammelle regolari, taglio dei
peli lunghi della coda, misure di ottimizzazione della salute
degli unghioni etc.
Prendete le misure necessarie per ridurre il numero di capez-
zoli incrociati o dei capezzoli anteriori troppo voluminosi.
Familiarizzate per tempo con il software di gestione in modo
da poterlo utilizzare ad occhi chiusi al momento in cui serve.
Configurazione della stalla
La corretta ubicazione dei robot di mungitura Astronaut fa
parte delle riflessioni fondamentali, al fine da evitare ostruzioni
per i movimenti dei bovini all’interno della stalla. L’entrata del
robot deve essere sempre perfettamente sgombra. E’ altret-
tanto importante che il robot sia chiaramente visibile e con un
accesso facile per le bovine. Predisponete allora una logistica
idonea che consente spazio sufficiente attorno al robot e un
accesso facile verso e dal robot. Fate in modo che le bovine non
si incrocino entrando e uscendo dai robot, soprattutto nel caso
di stalle attrezzate con numerosi robot. Ulteriori informazioni

Avviamento
Idealmente l’avviamento della mungitura robotizzata si dovreb-
be fare con 50/60 bovini, separati in due sotto gruppi. Durante
i primi tre giorni, le bovine devono essere guidate verso il robot,
tre volte al giorno. Quest’operazione deve essere svolta in piena
tranquillità e pazienza per evitare che la bovina associ il robot
ad un’esperienza negativa. Nell’arco di questi tre giorni, il
75% delle bovine avrà preso l’abitudine di andare verso i robot
autonomamente, in modo da poter, successivamente, rimuovere
i cancelli di separazione. Lasciate le bovine libere (circolazione
libera) e radunate quelle con un intervallo di mungitura di più di
10 ore, quattro volte al giorno. Il raduno delle bovine si ridurrà
progressivamente a due volte al giorno, ciò vale per i bovini con

efficace.
Il risparmio di tempo consente di gestire più efficacemente i
momenti di intensa attività.
E non solo, il tempo guadagnato può essere consacrato
ad altre attività personali o professionali, per esempio il
monitoraggio di un singolo capo di bestiame.
Uno studio realizzato all’interno di allevamenti dotati da uno a
quattro robot, ha dimostrato che il tempo richiesto alla gestione
di un robot diminuisce con l’aumento del numero di robot. Il
motivo è che alcuni compiti sono eseguiti indipendentemente
dal numero di robot installati.

un intervallo di mungitura superiore a 12 ore (o superiore a 10 kg
di latte). Le istruzioni d’uso dell’appendice 1 elencano le proce-
dure relative ai primi giorni di avviamento.
Questa procedura di avviamento diminuisce i tempi di attesa e
assicura un’ingestione adeguata di sostanza secca e d’acqua. Ra-
dunare troppi bovini e troppo presto induce le bovine dominate
ad attendere il loro turno per essere radunate. Queste ultime
associeranno il robot a un luogo affollato e pericoloso e di con-
seguenza preferiranno aspettare che sia l’allevatore ad occuparsi
del raduno. E’ perciò molto importante mantenere la calma ed
essere molto pazienti nel corso delle prime settimane, senza, tra
l’altro, tralasciare le istruzioni relative al raduno delle bovine.
Per l’avviamento, un consiglio: prevedete due persone per robot
per guidare le bovine verso l’apparecchio e per il controllo dell’
X-link. Dopo due o tre giorni, una persona sarà sufficiente.
1.4 Pianificazione della giornata
lavorativa
Il programma quotidiano dell’allevatore viene modificato
dall’introduzione dei robot nella sua impresa. Questi non dovrà
più mungere le bovine due o tre volte al giorno, fonte di radicale
cambiamento nella sua routine quotidiana. Grazie al robot di
mungitura l’allevatore potrà osservare i bovini nel loro ambiente
naturale. Il loro monitoraggio è semplificato e qualsiasi anoma-
lia verrà immediatamente segnalata. Per saperne di più, fate
riferimento al Capitolo 2.4 relativo alla routine quotidiana di un
allevamento robotizzato.
La mungitura robotizzata modifica la giornata lavorativa dell’al-
levatore:
soprattutto in termini di flessibilità, si pone definitivamente
fine all’epoca degli orari fissi per le mungiture.

Punti di attenzione in merito al tempo dedicato alla gestione
del robot:
Raduno delle bovine: le bovine si abituano ad essere radu-
nate per la mungitura.
L’approvvigionamento di foraggio e concentrati: un’ali-
mentazione troppo energetica potrebbe avere un impatto
negativo sulla frequenza di visite delle bovine al robot .
La salute e l’igiene degli unghioni: casi di zoppia o la pre-
senza di una pavimentazione scivolosa hanno un effetto
diretto sulle bovine circa la loro assiduità al robot.
Procedura di avviamento

maggiore flessibilità e minore mole di
lavoro
1.5 Dati informatici relativi all’attività
ed indicatori di prestazione
L’imprenditore di un’azienda agricola può ottenere qualsiasi
tipo di informazione sui suoi bovini attraverso il programma di
gestione del robot. Dispone inoltre di numerosi grafici e liste
che gli consentono di ricevere degli avvertimenti specifici in
merito alla mandria, al gruppo nonché ad ogni singolo capo.
Grazie a questo software può concentrare la sua attenzione
sui casi più urgenti. Xxx ha definito cinque indicatori chiave di
prestazione (KPI) destinati all’analisi specifici dei dati di un’im-
presa, in modo del tutto semplice :

5.
1. Oltre 2, 5 mungiture per una buona qualità di latte
La mungitura robotizzata consente di aumentare il numero di
mungiture delle bovine più produttive nonché migliorare la
salute delle loro mammelle e nello stesso tempo, diminuire la
presenza di cellule somatiche (SCC). Le cellule somatiche posso-
no tuttavia aumentare allorché si effettuano meno di 2 mungi-
ture al giorno. Il centro di ricerca Dexcell in Nuova Zelanda ha
effettuato uno studio comparativo (mucche munte 1 volta al
giorno rispetto le bovine munte 2 volte al giorno) destinato a
valutare le conseguenze del numero di mungiture quotidiane
sul livello di cellule somatiche. Questo studio ha esaminato il
SCC durante la fase di lattazione. La figura indica chiaramente
che le cellule aumentano nelle bovine munte 1 sola volta al
giorno, in particolar modo in fine della lattazione.

L’obiettivo è quello di mungere le bovine almeno 2,5 volte al
giorno dall’inizio della lattazione e di scendere gradualmente a
2,0 mungiture al giorno verso la fine della lattazione. Ne deriva
un SCC sempre al livello desiderato. Per questa ragione è fonda-
mentale implementare la libera circolazione delle bovine. Una
mungitura troppo frequente delle bovine in fine di lattazione
può comportare un aumento degli acidi grassi attivi (FFA) pre-
senti nel latte. Esistono diverse misure per incitare le bovine, in
fine di lattazione, a recarsi più frequentemente al robot:
Regolazione dell’alimentazione: un minimo di 2 kg/bovina/
giorno nel robot, evitando una sovralimentazione
Prevedere sufficiente spazio e circolazione libera
all’interno della stalla al fine di facilitare le bovine
dominate all’accesso al robot.
Regolazione del robot
Un parametro d’accesso al robot consente di determinare la
possibilità di mungere una bovina. Questi parametri d’accesso

si basano sulla produzione media della bovina, la previsio-
ne del rendimento di latte per visita e la fase di lattazione.
Durante ogni visita, la bovina dovrebbe produrre da 9 a 12
litri di latte. Il software calcola il livello di mungitura effettivo,
tenendo conto dei numeri minimi e massimi di mungitura,
definiti in funzione delle previsioni di produzione giornaliera e
degli obiettivi di produzione di latte per visita.
Generalmente, per le bovine fresche e con un’elevata pro-
duzione si prevede fino a cinque mungiture. Questo numero
diminuisce progressivamente con l’avvicinarsi del periodo di
lattazione e con il declino della produzione di latte . Il numero
minimo di mungiture per bovina, per giorno è di 2.0.
2. Numero elevato di rifiuti
Un numero elevato di rifiuti indica una buona affluenza di
bovini verso il robot. Questa situazione non è allarmante di
per sé, fermo restando che esista sufficiente tempo libero per
il robot (almeno il 10%).Se invece il tempo libero del robot è
insufficiente i rifiuti tenderanno a diminuire perché le bovine
non trovano l’occasione di entrare nel robot. A titolo indicati-
vo, 150 rifiuti occupano solo 30 minuti del robot
Numerosi fattori possono provocare un numero elevato di
rifiuti:

Presenza di fibra alimentare efficace nella mangiatoia, una
razione equilibrata.
Condizioni genetiche.
Bovine in ottime condizioni di salute.
Fattori negativi::
Impostazioni errate nel software.
Velocità di somministrazione del concentrato elevata, risul-
tato: la presenza di resti di concentrato nel robot.
Nessun alimento o alimenti di qualità inferiore distribuiti
nella mangiatoia.
3. Evitare i fallimenti di mungitura robotizzata
I fallimenti di mungitura non dovrebbero superare l’1% .
Cause possibili:
Interruzione effettuata dall’utilizzatore. L’allevatore ha
interrotto la visita all’X-link del robot.
Arresto automatico del robot. Il robot non è in grado di
avviare la mungitura perché la vacca non entra completa-
mente nel robot ma esce all’indietro prima che il cancello di
entrata sia completamente chiuso
I capezzoli non sono identificati. Il robot non è stato in
grado di identificare i capezzoli.
Durata di connessione. I capezzoli sono stati identificati ma
il robot non è stato in grado di attaccare uno dei capezzoli.
Tempi Morti di Mungitura I portacapezzoli sono stati cor-
rettamente attaccati ma uno dei quarti non fornisce alcun
flusso di latte.
La lista di attenzioni “Failed milking (Mungitura fallita)”
visualizza le bovine e il motivo del fallimento e fornisce infor-
mazioni relative ai Tempi Morti di Mungitura (periodo fra la
connessione e il primo flusso di latte) e il tempo di mungitura
per ogni quarto. Evitate ulteriori fallimenti per non compro-
mettere lo stato di salute delle mammelle. E’ bene notare che
un fallimento di mungitura occupa il robot per 8 minuti. Quin-
di 4 fallimenti immobilizzano il robot per una buona mezz’ora.
4. Ottimizzare le condizioni di salute delle mammelle
Per mantenere un buon livello di salute della mammella e
della qualità del latte, è consigliabile combinare, nel rapporto
“Udder Health” (salute delle mammelle), la lista di attenzioni,
della conduttività e quella del colore del latte ( ed eventual-
mente del conteggio delle cellule somatiche) per ogni quarto e
produzione di latte. La quantità di bovine riportato in questo
rapporto fornisce un’indicazione dello stato generale delle
mammelle, a livello della mandria. Pertanto questo numero
non dovrebbe superare il 10% del totale delle bovine.
5. Raduno degli animali
Per le bovine fresche si prevede una mungitura almeno tre vol-
te al giorno, per evitare, in primo luogo, problemi di salute ed
inoltre per iniziare con il piede giusto il periodo di lattazione.
Qui, l’obiettivo è di radunare al massimo il 5% delle bovine,
due volte al giorno. Se è necessario radunare più bovine, veri-
ficando la regolazione dell’alimentazione e la configurazione
della stalla etc. La progettazione di un’area di attesa flessibile
o di un cancello di separazione per riunire le bovine, può aiu-
tare a ridurre il fabbisogno di manodopera per il raduno delle
bovine. Xxx raccomanda l’uso di cancelli automatici asportabili
per non incappare in errori nello spostare i cancelli dopo la
mungitura del gruppo di bovine radunate.

presa tradizionale. Grazie al programma di gestione del robot
di mungitura, egli dispone permanentemente d’informazioni
aggiornate sulla sua mandria. Attraverso questo rapporto sarà in
grado di analizzare i dati relativi al robot di mungitura nonché la
qualità del latte, il comportamento degli animali, i dati alimen-
tari e i periodi di calore. Il monitoraggio giornaliero è basilare, di
preferenza due o tre volte al giorno.
Routine quotidiana
L’appendice 2 include un foglio d’istruzioni con annesso i rap-
porti da controllare almeno due volte al giorno nel T4C. Altro
provvedimento essenziale, in particolar modo per le imprese
di grossa dimensione, è la definizione ed attuazione di una
routine. Le bovine che tardano a farsi mungere dovranno es-
sere guidate verso il robot almeno due volte al giorno; questa
operazione dovrebbe essere realizzata ad intervalli irregolari in
modo da non farle abituare ad un raduno sistematico da parte
dell’allevatore (giri completi). Idealmente l’allevatore dovrebbe
effettuare i controlli durante diversi momenti della giornata
(per es. alle ore 08.00 e alle ore 17.00) nonché modificare le ore
di controllo in funzione dei giorni della settimana. Agendo in
questo modo gli intervalli non sono troppo lunghi. I giri parziali
hanno per scopo di identificare le bovine a cui necessitano cure
particolari, le bovine pronte da partorire etc.
Routine settimanali e mensili
Parallelamente ai compiti quotidiani, esistono diverse routine
settimanali e mensili da prendere in considerazione. Queste
possono, tra l’altro, riguardare il monitoraggio delle bovine
pronte per il parto, in asciutta oppure, in altro gruppo, o per
la manutenzione del macchinario. L’introduzione di un preciso
calendario delle attività da svolgere permette di risparmiare
del tempo prezioso ed inoltre, di ridurre lo stress indotto da
una mancanza d’organizzazione. Economizzando 10 minuti al
giorno, si guadagna, in definitiva, otto giorni di lavoro all’anno!
La pianificazione delle attività contribuisce ad un progresso in
materia di efficacia lavorativa, e la lista continua con la proget-
tazione di una stalla, l’organizzazione dei percorsi o la scelta
dei materiali e delle attrezzature.
Procedure operative standard (SOP)
L’impostazione di una routine quotidiana determina la stabilità
e serenità dell’allevamento. Stabilire chiaramente e con preci-
sione i diversi compiti e priorità, è un punto chiave dell’orga-
nizzazione del lavoro. Interrogatevi puntualmente su come
rendere più efficace la vostra attività e giusto appunto, sull’im-
portanza o l’urgenza di un compito piuttosto che un altro.
Combinando le vostre risposte, sarete in grado di delineare una
griglia oraria che vi consentirà di attribuire le giuste priorità e
importanza ai vari compiti da svolgere.

I SOP sono procedure standard mirate allo svolgimento di com-
piti specifici. Strumenti essenziali per una chiara ed efficace or-
ganizzzazione lavorativa atta al raggiungimento di prestazioni
ottimali. L’impostazione dei SOP minimizza i margini d’errore.
Lavoro
Il fabbisogno di manodopera nei grandi allevamenti diffe-
risce da quello di piccole aziende, a conduzione familiare.
In entrambi i casi è fondamentale prevedere un organico
composto da personale molto motivato, organizzato e amante
del contatto con le bovine. L’implementazione delle strategie
di lavoro e delle procedure operative standard (SOP) sono
anch’essi fattori essenziali allo sviluppo aziendale. Di fatto,
laddove è necessario l’intervento di più persone per la stessa
routine quotidiana è importante che i compiti siano svolti
sistematicamente, in modo identico e con professionalità. Il
ruolo dell’allevatore assomiglia a quello di un manager, e come
tale, è preposto all’organizzazione dell’attività in funzione di
una pianificazione rigorosa e meticolosa. Per ottimizzare al
meglio il controllo del lavoro si può ricorrere all’uso di “fogli di
controllo” in linea con i SOP, da far compilare ogni giorno dagli
impiegati, a fine giornata.
Esempio: Un’impresa composta da 1000 bovine da latte e con
l’installazione di 16 robot possiede una media di 100 bovine in
asciutta e circa 3 parti ogni giorno. In questo tipo di alleva-
mento si dovrebbe tenere conto dei seguenti fattori:

Ecco un suggerimento organizzativo per la routine quotidiana.
2.5 Cure e trattamenti dei bovini
In ogni allevamento, le bovine necessitano di un trattamento
individuale:
Fecondazione.
Trattamenti mastite.
Somministrazione di antibiotici.
Messa in asciutta.
Trattamenti per gli unghioni.
Trattamenti per gli unghioni.
Nella sala di mungitura, questi interventi vengono generalmente
effettuati durante la mungitura stessa. Negli allevamenti robotiz-
zati le bovine vengono munte 24 ore su 24. Pertanto la gestione
dovrà essere in sintonia con il robot al fine di evitare che le bovine
attendano lungamente nelle aree di separazione. Esempio: il
trattamento delle mastiti deve essere effettuato tre ore dopo la
mungitura altrimenti l’effetto ne è compromesso.
Area di trattamento
Il trattamento delle bovine può essere effettuato in diversi luoghi:
In una cuccetta.
Alla mangiatoia.
Nell’area di separazione.
Cercate di evitare lunghi tempi di attesa e, prevedete sufficiente
foraggio fresco, nell’area di separazione, nonché acqua e spazio
per il riposo. La configurazione dell’area di mungitura ha un im-
patto diretto sulla sicurezza e il benessere delle bovine, ma anche
sulla gestione del tempo.
Evitate di trattare la bovina all’interno del robot , il rischio
potrebbe essere un’associazione dell’apparecchio ad
un’esperienza negativa!
Un’area di separazione con cuccette e box per pareggio unghioni, per
facilitare il compito di trattamento delle bovine.
Procedura per il trattamento
La procedura per il trattamento con antibiotici è il seguente:
Inserite il trattamento specifico nel programma T4C.

L’allevatore dovrà rispettare scrupolosamente questa
routine. Scordarsi d’attivare la separazione del latte

potrebbe causare un’infiltrazione degli antibiotici
nella cisterna di latte. Per questa ragione è consigliabile
d’installare un secondo terminale PC/T4C nella stalla. In
alternativa è possibile impiegare un PDA (portatile) con
una connessione cordless verso il PC principale.
Il trattamento delle mammelle dovrebbe essere effettuato
dopo la mungitura, in tal senso Xxx raccomanda una delle
due seguenti opzioni:
Integrate la bovina, nel T4C, in un gruppo speciale
1.
(criteri d’accesso specifici) in modo da impostare la
mungitura per alcuni periodi specifici della giornata
(nel caso della presenza di una persona nella stalla).
Questa procedura consente di effettuare il trattamento
nel momento più opportuno. Inconveniente: questo
metodo potrebbe rompere la routine della bovina ed
incidere negativamente sul suo comportamento, per
esempio sulle visite al robot.
Verificate la bovina quando avete pianificato di

trattarla. Se è appena stata munta, la bovina potrà
essere trattata immediatamente. Altrimenti, è
preferibile immetterla nel T4C in un gruppo speciale
per una mungitura diretta. Dopo la mungitura e il
trattamento, potrete riporla nel suo gruppo d’origine.
Tuttavia, questa procedura è svantaggiosa dal punto
di vista dell’impiego di tempo per il trattamento della
bovina.
Per motivi economici relativi alla manodopera, molti
allevatori optano per l’opzione 1, ossia integrare la bovina
in un gruppo speciale. La seconda opzione non è da
escludere, ma necessita più tempo.
Cure e trattamenti dei

2.6 Capacità del robot
Due fattori determinano, in gran parte, la capacità del
robot: il tempo di preparazione e il tempo di mungitura.
La durata di preparazione corrisponde al tempo impiegato
dalla bovina nell’entrare nel robot, allo spostamento
del braccio, alla pulizia della mammella, all’attacco dei
capezzoli, alla spruzzatura ed infine all’uscita dell’animale
dal robot.
Generalmente il tempo di presenza è di circa due minuti.
Nel caso di forma e di condizioni igieniche della mammella
ottimali, il tempo di preparazione è meno lungo. Per il
resto, la durata dipende dal flusso di latte della bovina.
L’ottimizzazione della capacità del robot è strettamente
correlata alla buona resa delle bovine con una produzione
lattiera importante. In tal modo mungendo meno
frequentemente certe bovine “problematiche” si contribuirà
a ridurre il tempo di preparazione alla mungitura. Le bovine
dotate di più latte nelle mammelle registrano generalmente
un leggero aumento della loro resa lattiera. Procedendo in
tal modo si rafforza la capacità di produzione del robot. Il
rapporto Cow Robot Efficiency (Efficacia robot bovina) vi
informa circa i tempi di preparazione e di mungitura per
bovina.

molto latte (valore ottimale: 10 kg di latte per
mungitura).
Allevate e selezionate le bovine con un flusso di latte
elevato. Le variazioni fra le bovine all’interno di una
mandria possono variare da 1 a 6 kg/min.
Il livello di vuoto più elevato o una regolazione
adeguata della pulsazione contribuiscono ad aumentare

definitiva, avere un impatto negativo sul flusso del latte
(e la salute della mammella).
Ottimizzazione del tempo di preparazione
Per ottimizzare il tempo di preparazione, controllate ogni
tappa successiva al processo di mungitura. Per le bovine
con una durata di attacco superiore alla media:
assicuratevi che la mammella o la coda non sia troppo
pelosa.
Se ogni quarto è vuoto alla fine della lattazione
proprio prima della messa in asciutta: interrompete la
mungitura di questo quarto.
Se la pressione al livello della mammella diminuisce
a fine di lattazione, i capezzoli posteriori rischiano
di essere troppo ravvicinati. In tal caso, raggruppate
le bovine all’interno di un gruppo destinato a due
mungiture al giorno in modo che abbiano più latte nella
mammella.
Bovine con anomalie alle mammelle avranno dei
tempi di attacco prolungati. In tal caso, raggruppate
le bovine all’interno di un gruppo per la mungitura
accompagnata dal personale o di una supervisione
specifica.
Altri fattori atti per migliorare la capacità del robot
L’idoneità delle bovine all’uso del robot consente
una massima ottimizzazione della capacità del robot.
D’altronde, non è da trascurare l’importanza di una
corretta impostazione dei parametri del T4C in modo che il
robot dedichi tempo sufficiente alle bovine che ne hanno
più bisogno. Per le bovine in buona salute e ben disposte
ad andare al robot frequentemente:
Spingete costantemente il foraggio fresco alla
mangiatoia.
Somministrate foraggi fibrosi alla mangiatoia al fine
di migliorare la loro ruminazione e renderle più attive.
Altrimenti, le bovine diventano velocemente sazie e
pigre, e preferiscono restare sdraiate nella stalla invece
che andare al robot.
Una buona salute degli unghioni e delle aree di
passaggio non scivolose.

Selezionate le bovine più idonee ai sistemi di mungitura

Evitate che i capezzoli posteriori si incrocino. E’noto che

Tenete in conto la velocità del flusso del latte nel defini-

Sovrappopolamento
Il sovrappopolamento di un robot dipende in gran
parte, dal numero di animali che lo visitano ma anche
dalla velocità delle mungiture ed infine dal tempo di
preparazione nel robot. Il rapporto Robot Performance
(Prestazioni del robot) del T4C descrive i risultati del
periodo trascorso includendo il numero di mungiture,
il tempo dedicato alle diverse attività relative alle
mungiture e alla sovracapacità dell’apparecchio. Il
sovrappopolamento causa l’immobilizzazione alla
mangiatoia o nelle aree di passaggio di molte bovine.
Per le bovine che possono essere munte nel robot quando la mammella è
piena, integratele con il gruppo di bovine destinate a due mungiture al
giorno.

L’alimentazione è una dei fattori chiavi della riuscita di un allevamento robotizzato. Condiziona non soltanto la
produzione di latte delle bovine, ma anche la loro salute, la loro riproduzione e il loro metabolismo. Inoltre si
ripercuote sulla loro circolazione e la frequenza delle visite al robot. Per Xxx, leader dei sistemi di mungitura robo-
tizzata, il successo della mungitura automatica è direttamente correlato al tipo d’alimentazione somministrata alle
bovine. La gestione alimentare ha un enorme impatto sulla redditività finanziaria degli allevamenti automatizzati.

gare le particelle alimentari per una decomposizione ottimale.
Una volta che la decomposizione è stata realizzata, le piccole
particelle alimentari e molecole passano nella parte liquida per

3.1 Fisiologia della ruminazione
Rumine
La bovina da latte è un ruminante. Una bovina non è in grado
da sola di spezzare la struttura cellulare dell’erba. Il suo primo
prestomaco, il rumine, può contenere da 100 a 120 litri di
sostanza fermentabile (digeribile). Il contenuto del rumine è
suddiviso in tre fasi: la fase gassosa (parte superiore), solida
(parte intermediaria) e liquida (parte inferiore). Gli alimenti
fermentano attraverso l’azione dei batteri e dei protozoi,
spezzando gli alimenti in molecole che diventano digeribili per

Processo di ruminazione
La masticazione e ruminazione dei ruminanti ridimensiona le
particelle alimentari e l’aumento del rapporto superficie/vo-
lume delle particelle. Ne risulta un miglioramento dell’accesso
microbico e della degradazione degli alimenti. Questo proces-
so ha il compito di facilitare la digestione nel tubo digestivo.
Una bovina rumina da 6 a 10 ore al giorno e come negli umani,
il processo digestivo funziona meglio durante i periodi di ripo-
so, quando interviene un aumento del flusso sanguigno verso
il sistema digestivo. Durante la ruminazione la bovina produce
da 160 a 180 litri di saliva. Il bicarbonato contenuto nella saliva
(tampone) aiuta a mantenere la stabilità del pH del rumine
e in tal modo a lottare contro l’acidosi ruminale. Dopo ogni
pasto si registra una diminuzione del pH del rumine dovuta
al processo di fermentazione. Ecco perché è preferibile che la
bovina inizi la sua ruminazione il più presto possibile dopo le
razioni alimentari.
