Old Ghosts
It is hot, humid August. IT IS Jim Brennan's birthday, his deathday too. He wakens at dawn, startled by birdsong and the orange sun burning the faded floral wallpaper across from his tumbled bed.
'It's my birthday,' he remembers. I’m seventy-six today. Where did it go?'
Climbing painfully from a sore mattress, standing in striped pyjamas by the window, Jim stares gardenwards. These days it's all weed killing, backache and wishes. The roses are already burning in the sun. Clematis cling like growing children to mothers. Next door's dog barks. A cat scales a glass sharp wall and drops beside its shadow under an apple tree, stalking anxious sparrows with the first sun. Under the broken birdhouse a mouse plays with a nibble of yesterday's bread.
The last star melts into dawnrise.
There's heat in the breathless August day already.
Jimmy Brennan, seventy-six, sitting in his kitchen. Silent. The house, holding its breath around him, the roof oven baked. Jim's thick, veined hands brush toast crumbs from the plastic tabletop. He shifts his faded, slippered feet and dust dances giddily on the dull, patched carpet. The clock on the dresser ticks hurriedly and the letter box snaps awake.
Jim walks to the hall and picks up bills and ads that promise discounts and holidays abroad. Jim has never been out of Ireland, never crossed the sea. His tired eyes examine the envelopes at arms length. There are no birthday cards to sigh over - these days, who would know?

Призраки прoшлого.
Жаркий, влажный август. День рождения Джима Бреннана. И день его смерти. Он просыпается на рассвете, разбуженный пением птиц. На стене напротив его смятой постели, на обоях с цветочным рисунком, горит ярко-оранжевое солнце.
«Сегодня мой день рождения,» - вспоминает он. «Сегодня мне исполняется 76. Куда же все ушло?»
С трудом поднявшись с твердого матраса, он в полосатой пижаме подходит к окну. Джим смотрит в сад. Сколько он выполол сорняков. Сколько было боли в спине. Сколько желаний. Розы уже пылают на солнце. Клематисы льнут друг к другу, словно растущие дети к матерям. Лает соседская собака. Кот карабкается по ровной как стекло стене и спрыгивает рядом, в тени от яблони. Подкрадывается к встревоженным воробьям в первых лучах солнца. Под разрушенным гнездом мышь играет с огрызком вчерашнего хлеба. Последняя звезда тает в лучах восходящего солнца. Безветренный августовский день наполняется зноем.
76-летний Джимми Бреннан сидит на кухне. Он молчит. В доме все вокруг него замерло. Крыша накалилась как плита. Полными, испещренными венами руками Джим смахивает крошки хлеба с пластикового стола. Он идет в своих выцветших тапочках, и пыль у него под ногами кружится в ветреном танце на тусклом заплатанном ковре. Торопливо тикают часы на кухонном шкафчике. С треском открывается почтовый ящик. Джим входит в коридор и собирает счета и объявления, обещающие скидки и отдых заграницей. Джим никогда не покидал Ирландию, никогда не пересекал море. Его усталые глаза разглядывают конверты на расстоянии вытянутой руки. Среди них нет поздравительных открыток, над которыми можно было бы повздыхать. Кто знал, что так будет?
