A nucleus is characterised by two quantities: atomic number and mass number. Atomic number (denoted by the symbol Z) indicates the number of protons in the nucleus, while mass number (denoted by A) represents the total number of nucleons (protons plus neutrons)...
The principal constituents of atoms are protons, neutrons, and electrons. At one time, all three types of particle were considered to be genuinely "elementary": fundamental and indivisible building blocks of matter. Electrons are still believed to be genuinely fundamental particles (an electron cannot be sub-divided into smaller constituents). Protons and neutrons, however, are now known to be composed of tinier, more basic, particles called quarks.
