Gabriel de la Corte fue hijo, al parecer, del desconocido pintor de perspectivas Francisco de la Corte, activo en Antequera, hermano del también pintor Juan de la Corte (1597-1660), uno de los escasos discípulos conocidos de Velázquez y conocido pintor de batallas y asuntos mitológicos, quien, según otras fuentes y fundamentalmente Ceán Bermúdez, pudo ser, de veras, el padre de Gabriel. Según Palomino en su Parnaso Español Pintoresco Laureado, publicado en Madrid en 1724 como tercera y última parte del Museo Pictórico y Escala Óptica, Gabriel de la Corte fue artífice de escaso éxito que vivió en la extrema pobreza, especializado en la pintura de jarrones, cestillos, guirnaldas y carteles, que había aprendido a pintar sin el apoyo de un maestro –si realmente su padre fue Juan de la Corte, éste murió cuando Gabriel contaba sólo con doce años-, sino copiando y asimilando lo mejor de las pinturas de flores de Juan de Arellano y Bartolomé Pérez, sobre todo, pero diferenciándose de estos en una tendencia mucho más decorativa y ornamental, debida sobre todo a la combinación, en sus obras más conseguidas, de un dibujo incisivo y una destacada facilidad en el manejo del pincel, alternando zonas empastadas con finísimas veladuras que dan una sutil impresión de frescura en sus flores. No debe olvidarse que la pintura de flores adquirió gran predicamento durante las últimas décadas del siglo XVII, arrebatando tan distinguido puesto a la pintura de frutas y, sobre todo, uvas, que estuvo de moda durante los primeros años del seiscientos. En este contexto, Gabriel vendía sus obras, “por la fuerza de la necesidad” según Palomino, a muy bajo precio, y algunos pintores del Madrid de la época le encargaban la elaboración de estas partes menores en sus obras, como Antonio de Castrejón o Matías de Torres, cuyas técnicas vivaces, esquemáticas y sueltas pudieron influir en el quehacer último de De la Corte. | Translation - English
Most likely Gabriel de la Corte was the son of unknown panorama painter Francisco de la Corte, who worked in Antequera, and who, in turn, was a brother of another painter named Juan de la Corte (1597-1660), one of the few famous Velázquez students and a well-known painter of military and mythological scenes, who, according to some other sources, especially Ceán Bermúdez, could have really bean Gabriel’s father. In his book Parnaso Español Pintoresco Laureado, published in Madrid in 1724, the third and the last part of the Museo Pictórico y Escala Óptica, Palomino wrote that Gabriel de la Corte was a master with almost no success at all, so he lived in extreme poverty and specialized at painting vases, baskets, garlands and posters, which he have learnt to paint without any master’s support – if Juan de la Corte was really his father, he nevertheless died when Gabriel was only twelve years old - so he was just copying and assimilating the best features of floral paintings by Arellano and Bartolomé Pérez in the first place, but his style differed from theirs, as his pictures were much more decorative and ornamental, first of all due to the combination, notable in his following works, of a sharp-cut contour and distinctive ease of brush-work: he was alternating filled areas with fine layers of transparent paints, which gave his flowers the subtlest impression of freshness. One shouldn’t forget that in the last decades of the XVII century floral paintings acquired great popularity, attaching much weight to fruit still-lives and, above all, grapes, which were popular in the first years of the seventeenth century. So considering, Gabriel was selling his works “by the force of need”, as Palomino wrote, for very low price, and some Madrid painters of the time, like Antonio de Castrejón or Matías de Torres, made him elaborate the weakest spots of his work: their lively, schematic and releasing techniques could have influenced the latest of De la Corte’s works. | | Spanish to Russian: Newspaper article | Source text -

Graduated from VSU, Russia, as a translator (english, spanish), had two part-time jobs as a translator (social work and water treatment) in my hometown, then moved to Moscow and started as a freelancer, working with different types of texts, including literary translations.
