Heathrow Airport is one of the few places in England you can be sure of seeing a gun. These guns are carried by policemen in short-sleeved shirts and black flak-jackets, alert for terrorists about to blow up Tie-Rack. They are unlikely to confront me directly, but if they do I shall tell them the truth. I shall state my business. I’m planning to stop at Heathrow Airport until I see someone I know. (...)

Astonishingly, I wait for thirty-nine minutes and don’t see one person I know. Not one, and no-one knows me. I’m as anonymous as the drivers with their universal name-cards (some surnames I know), except the drivers are better dressed. Since the kids, whatever I wear looks like pyjamas. Coats, shirts, T-shirts, jeans, suits; like slept-in pyjamas. (...)

I hear myself thinking about all the people I know who have let me down by not leaving early on a Tuesday morning for glamorous European destinations. My former colleagues from the insurance office must still be stuck at their desks, like I always said they would be, when I was stuck there too, wasting my time and unable to settle while Ally moved steadily onward, getting her PhD and her first research fellowship at Reading University, her first promotion.

Our more recent grown-up friends, who have serious jobs and who therefore I half expect to be seeing any moment now, tell me that home-making is a perfectly decent occupation for a man, courageous even, yes, manly to stay at home with the kids. These friends of ours are primarily Ally’s friends. I don’t seem to know anyone anymore, and away from the children and the overhead planes, hearing myself think, I hear the thoughts of a whinger. This is not what I had been hoping to hear.

I start crying, not grimacing or sobbing, just big silent tears rolling down my cheeks. I don’t want anyone I know to see me crying, because I’m not the kind of person who cracks up at Heathrow airport some nothing Tuesday morning. I manage our house impeccably, like a business. It’s a serious job. I have spreadsheets to monitor the hoover-bag situation and colour-coded print-outs about the ethical consequences of nappies. I am not myself this morning. I don’t know who I am.

English to Korean: Lewis Carroll and Oxford (tourism)

The magnificent college and Cathedral of Christ Church, where Charles Dodgson spent 46 years, are packed with mementos of the Alice books. The Deanery opens onto the splendid Tom Quad, between the Library and the Cathedral. Carroll’s last set of rooms were in the northwest corner of the Quad, and he frequently dined in the splendid 16th–century Dining Hall, which contains his posthumous portrait (under the name Charles Dodgson). There are also the “Alice Window” (installed in the 1980s) with images of the Dodo and characters from the Hatter’s Tea Party, and brass firedogs reminiscent of Tenniel’s drawing of Alice with a very long neck.

Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet or saucepan. Add the onions and garlic; then saute till just slightly limber. Cut both ends off the green beans, divide in halves, and saute for approximately 5 minutes. Add tomatoes, then water, and finally the remaining ingredients. Bring the entire mixture to a boil. Lower heat; cover and simmer for about 30-40 minutes. Serve piping hot. Just prior to serving, top with uncooked shredded carrot, mounded in the middle, with a sprig of mint as a flag.

English to Korean: Lost Histories by Joel Levy (nonfiction book)

The original and earliest source for Atlantis is the work of the ancient Greek philosopher Plato ('427-347 BCE). His dialogues Timaeus and Critias (written C360 BCE) involve discussions between real and (possibly) invented characters. One of the characters in these dialogues, Critias, tells of a story that has come down to him fourth-hand, allegedly from an Egyptian priest from around 600 BCE who in turn was relating knowledge preserved for 9,000 years, which was recorded in inscriptions on columns in the city of Sais. This tale, which is used to illustrate the nobility of the ancient Athenians, describes Atlantis as a great civilisation from the West that conquered the Western Mediterranean from its base 'beyond the Pillars of Hercules'. Conceptually, the simplest solution to the spam problem is requiring payment for each e-mail message that is sent, just as with conventional mail. Such a solution could be accomplished through structural changes to SMTP and would create a system in which a message was guaranteed to be delivered instead of suffering an ISP rejection on non-standard suspicion of spam. Money is the most obvious currency that could be used for payment but other ideas have been proposed.

For example, Microsoft has advocated computational spam-fighting, whereby each sent e-mail is paid for not in money but in computational time. Microsoft has proposed increasing the computational time to send each message to about ten seconds for unsolicited e-mail. This plan would have little effect on the casual e-mail sender, but those sending millions of messages a day would have to invest heavily into additional computational resources, a significant deterrent to sending spam. With this approach, users may choose to keep a whitelist, meaning that the list members would be exempt from the computational fee. (from OECD Anti-spam toolkit)

Their mother, a widow named Naomi, decided to return to Bethlehem, and she entreated her daughters-in-law to return to their own families. Orpah relented; but Ruth insisted that she not be separated yet again from loved ones, begging her mother-in-law to allow that they travel on together: ”Where you go I will go," Ruth said to Naomi." “And where you stay I will stay. I am a South Korea based linguist with over 6 years' translating experience in English to Korean.

I am good at especially humanity translation which requires natural, beautiful, and elegant expressions. I am also comfortable with translating computer-related documents, having studied computer science in the States.

Besides many different projects, I have worked on translating a number of tourism articles written by various writers from a travel magazine of Hachette Ein's Media for over a year. I have also translated and proofread a couple of books on culinary art and Christianity. This experience has made me fall in love with my native language deeper than ever. I take a great care in readability and style, while retaining the original meaning.

I mostly use American Heritage Dictionary 4th ed., Oxford English Dictionary, Korean Dictionary of the National Academy of Korean Language 2008, and English-Korean Dictionary, as well as databases on the net.
