Despite numerous technical differences in the implementation of these systems, satellite positioning systems have three essential components:
• Space – GPS, GLONASS, and GALILEO satellites orbit approximately 12,000 nautical miles above Earth and are equipped with a clock and radio.
• Control – Ground stations located around the Earth that monitor the satellites and upload data, including clock corrections and new ephemerides (satellite positions as a function of time), to ensure the satellites transmit data properly.

Pomimo licznych różnic technicznych pomiędzy tymi trzema systemami, wszystkie posiadają trzy zasadnicze komponenty:
• Kosmiczny – orbity satelitów GPS, GLONASS i GALILEO znajdują się około 20 000 km ponad powierzchnią Ziemi, a same satelity wyposażono w zegary atomowe i radiowe systemy łączności.
• Kontrolny – bazy i stacje monitorujące rozlokowane w różnych częściach świata monitorują pracę satelitów, a także wprowadzają do pamięci komputerów pokładowych precyzyjne elementy orbity i poprawki zegara atomowego. |
