Europe is home to an estimated 200,000 animal and plant species. But 335 vertebrate species are at risk of extinction including the Iberian lynx, brown bear and all our sea mammals. Also threatened with extinction are 43% of our bird species, 45% of our butterfly species, 30% of amphibians, 45% of reptiles and 52% of freshwater fish. Some 800 plant species in Europe are at risk and these may form the basis of new medicines and treatments but as they die out, we will never know how useful they might have been.
Why is it happening?
The reasons for biodiversity loss include the destruction of natural habitats through intensive agriculture and construction, pollution, over-exploitation of forests, oceans, rivers, lakes and soils, and climate change.
Why does it matter?
Loss of biodiversity is not just about the disappearance of beautiful landscapes, animals, birds and plants; biodiversity is essential to economic prosperity, security, health and other aspects of our daily lives. Loss of biodiversity is already undermining, and threatens to derail, efforts to improve economic, social and environmental wellbeing in the EU, and worldwide.
Hazardous chemicals
You can’t always see them, feel them or taste them but we are surrounded by man-made chemicals. Some of them are dangerous, such as those that come from traffic fumes, industry and pesticides. Other dangerous chemicals can be found in everyday products such as detergents, textiles, electronics, carpets and even toys.
What is the EU doing about dangerous chemicals?
The EU has taken a range of steps to reduce the number of dangerous chemicals to which we are exposed. For example, it is limiting the number of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS), some of the world’s nastiest chemicals which were widely used in industry and as pesticides (like DDT). They are toxic, persist for generations and accumulate in the bodies of humans and animals. The EU has ratified the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants which is the most important global effort to ban the use of these toxic chemicals.
The European Commission has presented a proposal for a new EU regulatory system for chemicals: REACH, which stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals. It places the responsibility for the safety of chemicals on manufacturers and importers and seeks to produce the necessary information on chemical substances that has been lacking so far. The proposal is making its way through the EU decision-making process (the European Parliament and EU Council of the EU) and could become law in 2007.
| Translation - French La menace pour notre environnement naturel
L’extinction
