“Incomparabile… che sorge tra le rose e gli oleandri su di un altopiano da dove lo sguardo spazia nel mare”, così definì Villa Cimbrone, nell’estate de 1853, il viaggiatore tedesco Gregorovius che non ebbe alcun dubbio in merito ad un luogo tanto emozionante e magico.
La Villa e il magnifico giardino paragonato agli “Orti d’Armida fra le rose e le ortensie” hanno origini remote che si fondono con la storia stessa di Ravello.
I primi documenti d’archivio risalenti all’ XI secolo ci dicono che la villa fu edificata su un promontorio di un vasto podere chiamato “Cimbronium” da cui trae il nome.

Appartenne inizialmente alla nobile famiglia degli Acconciajoco e poi dalla metà del 1300 alla potente e facoltosa famiglia dei Fusco, nobile casato Ravellese imparentato con i Pitti di Firenze e i D’Angiò di Napoli. I Fusco ne ampliarono sia la struttura architettonica sia quella decorativa, trasformando l’originaria “casa palaziata” di campagna in una nobile dimora e affrescando i saloni di rappresentanza con “imagines clipeate” ed arcadici bozzetti.

Dopo un periodo di abbandono ottocentesco la villa ritrovò il suo splendore allorquando il colto viaggiatore inglese Ernest William Beckett, Lord Grimthorpe, giunto a Ravello ed innamoratosi perdutamente del sito, decise nel 1904 di acquistarla e di farne “il luogo più bello del mondo”.
Egli con l’ausilio del ravellese Nicola Mansi intraprese un sensibile e prezioso intervento di recupero architettonico e decorativo, realizzando il suo sogno romantico, attraverso una armoniosa mescolanza di stili, epoche, elementi decorativi e reperti lapidei antichi.
La villa trasformata in residenza d’eccezione divenne rifugio e luogo di incontro per nomi famosi della politica, dell’aristocrazia, e fonte di ispirazione per molti artisti, tra cui gli esponenti del circolo londinese di Bloomsbury.

“Incomparable … it rises from amongst roses and oleanders on a plateau from where the gaze extends to the sea”. Thus was Villa Cimbrone defined, in the summer of 1853, by the German traveller Gregorovius, who had no doubts at all about such an exciting and magical place.
The Villa and the magnificent garden, compared to the “Gardens of Armida amongst roses and hydrangeas” have remote origins which merge with Ravello’s own history.
The first records, dating back to the 11th century, tell us that the villa was built on the rocky ridge of a vast homestead, named “Cimbronium”, and it is from this that it took its name.

It initially belonged to the noble Acconciajoco family, and then from the mid 1300s to the powerful and wealthy Fusco family, of noble Ravello peerage related to the Pitti of Florence and the D’Angiò of Naples. The Fusco family extended both the architectural structure and the decorative one, transforming the original country “palatial home” into a noble residence, frescoing staterooms with “clipeate” images and pastoral sketches.

After a period of abandonment in the 1800s, the villa re-found its splendour when the cultured English traveller Ernest William Beckett, Lord Grimthorpe, having reached Ravello and fallen desperately in love with the place, decided to buy it in 1904 and to make it “the most beautiful place in the world”.
With the aid of the Ravellese Nicola Mansi, he undertook a sensitive and valuable architectural and decorative restoration, accomplishing his romantic dream with a harmonious mix of styles, eras, decorative elements and ancient stone finds.
The villa, transformed into an exceptional residence, became a refuge and meeting place for the famous names of politics and aristocracy, and a source of inspiration for many artists, among whom the exponents of the London Bloomsbury set.

PREFAZIONE
Chi mi conosce sa che io sono un ”Jurassic Diver”. Chi non mi conosce, sappia che misi la prima maschera sugli occhi (una ”monogoggle”, che teneva il naso a contatto con l’acqua) nel 1945, quando avevo 8 anni. Sono dunque un ”pioniere di seconda generazione”, ed ebbi il mio daffare per molti anni ancora prima che fossero messe in commercio le mute di neoprene (ancora a poco meno di vent’anni facevo le gare di pesca subacquea proteggendomi dal freddo con un vecchio maglione infeltrito). Negli stessi anni ‘50 cominciai a immergermi con le bombole, due cilindri d’acciaio da 12 litri ciascuno di capacità a 150 atmosfere, tanto pesanti che non bisognava assolutamente indossare la cintura di zavorra e che per riguadagnare la superficie ci si doveva arrampicare sugli scogli: naturalmente il GAV non si sapeva nemmeno che cosa fosse, né si immaginava che di lì a qualche anno i calcoli di decompressione sarebbero stati affidati a computer. In tutto il Mediterraneo, noi italiani, e francesi e spagnoli praticavamo esclusivamente l’immersione profonda, ben oltre i 40 metri, un po’ per le caratteristiche di questo mare, un po’ perchè era consentito l’uso dell’autorespiratore anche per la pesca (praticamente l’unica attività subacquea conosciuta) e tra i campioni dell’epoca ce n’erano alcuni che abitualmente pescavano in apnea persino più in basso di quel¬le quote.
Non vi dico gli esiti di quelle imprese: annegati, affogati, embolizzati sciancati per sempre o deceduti tra spaventose sofferenze. Nell’opinione pubblica si diffuse la convinzione che ”la pesca subacquea” fosse un’attività da incoscienti e i suoi esiti sempre mortali o peggio.
Nel giro di meno di vent’anni, la ”subacquea” - finalmente senza aggettivi qualificativi - è diventata una delle attività ludiche più piacevoli e appaganti e nel contempo me¬no pericolose in assoluto. Grazie all’enorme progresso scientifico e tecnologico, che ha condotto a conoscenze sem¬pre più approfondite della fisiologia umana e alla fabbricazione di attrezzature sempre più affidabili. Questo manuale SNSI per la preparazione dell’aspirante Advanced Open Water Diver, del Subacqueo Avanzato, è la prova del livello raggiunto dalla ricerca. Voi che avete il privilegio di servirvene, consideratelo alla stregua di una componente essenziale del vostro equipaggiamento, proprio come un erogatore di buona qualità. Quando avrete conseguito la certificazione, superando l’esame prescritto, continuate a portarlo con voi come fosse un breviario. PREFACE
Those who know me will know that I am a ”Jurassic Diver”. For those who do not, you should know that I donned my first mask (a monogoggle, which meant that your nose was in contact with the water) in 1945, when I was 8 years old. I am, therefore, a “second-generation pioneer”, and for many years I did my work before neoprene diving suits came on the market (while still under twenty years of age I was taking part in underwater fishing competitions and protecting myself from the cold with an old woolen sweater). Also in the 50s I began to dive with tanks, two steel cylinders of 12 litres each with 150 atmosphere capacity, so heavy that there was no need to wear a weight belt, and one had to climb over the reef rocks to be able to reach the surface: naturally we did not even know what a buoyancy control device (BCD) was, nor could we imagine that in a few years’ time decompression calculations would be entrusted to computers. In the whole of the Mediterranean, we Italians, and the French and the Spanish, exclusively practised deep diving, well over 40 metres, partly because of this particular sea’s characteristics, partly because the use of a breathing apparatus was allowed for fishing too (practically the only known underwater activity) and among the champions of the day there were some who habitually fished in apnea at even deeper levels.
I will not tell you the results of those ventures: people drowned, people crippled forever by embolism, or deceased after frightful suffering. In public opinion the belief spread that “underwater fishing” was an activity for the reckless, and that its results were always fatal or worse.
In the space of less than twenty years, underwater activity - finally without qualifying adjectives - has become one of the most pleasant and fulfilling recreational activities, all the while becoming absolutely less dangerous. Thanks also to huge scientific and technological progress, which led to an ever-deepening knowledge of human physiology and to the manufacture of increasingly reliable gear. This SNSI manual for the preparation of the aspiring Advanced Open Water Diver, is evidence of the research level reached. You who have the privilege of making use of it, should consider it an essential component of your equipment, just like a good quality regulator. Once you have achieved your certification, and passed the prescribed exam, carry it with you as if it was a prayer book. And look through it from time to time, at least every time doubts assail you. I have read through it with extreme attention, because the SNSI appointed me with its review, in light of my long-standing diving experience (even as a “DIY” diver, seeing as in my jurassic era the courses did not exist) and my experience as an author. I am not ashamed to admit that I learnt some very important notions that I was disregarding, and to admit to have been a bit envious, of you divers of today and tomorrow, who have the privilege of being able to improve in the ancient art of going underwater, with such a modern and updated text.

She is very cute (just like all of us, don’t you think?), she has dark skin, blue eyes, and long hair which is a sort of reddish brown colour. She has a regal look to her, even though her style of dress is sporty and she does not wear make-up. You really can tell that she is a princess! But what counts most is that she is kind, nice and helpful, in fact exactly the right person to become the sixth fairy of the magical Winx Club!
I nearly forgot to tell you that she gets on famously with Musa, because just like her, she feels passionately about dance and music. I am sure that we are all going to have a lot of fun together!
Now we will quickly have to warn her to be on guard against spells from the Trix, who will surely soon target her, taking advantage of the fact that she is the newest arrival.

Poco è noto sulle origini dell'Adagio per Glasharmonika KV 356 (617a) di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Il compositore salisburghese, infatti, omise di registrare la composizione nel catalogo autografo delle proprie opere che egli aveva iniziato a tenere a partire dal febbraio 1784. Questo fatto, però, non deve trarre in inganno. È difatti successo più di una volta che il compositore salisburghese si fosse "dimenticato", o più semplicemente, avesse sospeso la registrazione di composizioni proprie nel catalogo per diverse ragioni, alcune delle quali ancora da indagare con maggior cognizione di causa.
Sebbene fino a qualche tempo fa fosse opinione comune che la composizione appartenesse ad una fase creativa precedente, diversi indizi invitano a collocarne la stesura nell'estate del 1791, un periodo particolarmente prolifico per un compositore impegnato su diversi fronti. Mozart’s “Mysterious” Adagio

Little is known of the origins of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756-1791) Adagio for Glasharmonika KV 356 (617a). The composer from Salzburg, as a matter of fact, omitted to register the composition in the manuscript catalogue of his own works which he had started to keep in February 1784. This omission should, however, not deceive anyone. It has in fact happened more than once that the Salzburg composer “forgot”, or more simply, stopped registering his own compositions in the catalogue for various reasons, some of which are still being investigated for a better understanding of the causes.
Although it was common opinion until recently that the composition belonged to a previous creative phase, several clues place the drafting of the composition to the summer of 1791, a particularly prolific period for a composer engaged on various fronts. During those months, as a matter of fact, the drafting of the Clemenza di Tito KV 621, the Zauberflöte KV 620, as well as many other works to which the composer was dedicating himself with incredible energy, were registered. |
