“Grand Canyon National Park, the United States of America”. The Grand Canyon. Extending across an arid plateau of northwest Arizona is what America’s conservationist President Theodore Roosevelt once described as: “absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world.” This breathtaking spectacle is one of the world’s most astonishing natural wonders. The Grand Canyon National Park was designated a World Heritage Site in 1979.
The Colorado River snakes its way west to the canyon from the lofty peaks of the Rocky Mountains. The altitude of the Colorado River drops more than 3000 meters or 1.8 miles as it courses south to the canyon. Over the centuries the force of this river has eroded vast tracks of land to form the Grand Canyon. As much as 80,000 tons of earth and sand continue to be flushed away every day.
Just before dawn is the most visually splendid time of day to view the Grand Canyon. The rising sun silhouettes the reddish rock faces of the canyon. The shapes and surfaces of the rocks appear to gradually change due to the morning sun’s shifting rays. Light. Shadow. Color. The rough-hewn cliffs come alive with vivid shades of color.

Le Grand Canyon s’étend sur un plateau aride au nord de l’Arizona. Le président conservateur des États-Unis Theodore Roosevelt n’avait pas hésité à le décrire comme « un site absolument unique au monde ». Ce spectacle à couper le souffle est l’une des plus extraordinaires merveilles naturelles. Le parc national du Grand Canyon appartient au patrimoine mondial depuis 1979.
La rivière Colorado serpente à l’ouest du canyon, depuis les cimes des Montagnes Rocheuses où elle prend sa source. Elle perd plus de 3000 mètres d’altitude en s’écoulant vers le sud du canyon.
Au fil des siècles, la rivière a érodé de larges pans de terre pour former le Grand Canyon. Elle charrie aujourd’hui encore 80 000 tonnes de terre et de sable par jour.
C'est juste avant le lever du soleil que le Grand Canyon est le plus beau. Le soleil levant dessine la silhouette des roches rouges des falaises. La forme et l’aspect des rochers changent progressivement sous les rayons matinaux du soleil. La lumière, les ombres, les couleurs... Le relief accidenté des falaises prend vie, avec des dégradés de couleur éclatants.
