| Translation - English Additional reinforcement is required for door and window openings. In addition to dowels, a jamb post is needed. This is let into a saw-cut rabbet in the tails of the logs at the opening.
Even when the trimmed timbers have been seasoned from Easter to mid-Summer, the log house will still settle for several years after it has been built. The wood shrinks due to continued drying and will be compressed under its own weight. The amount of shrinkage in the house varies. Soft, rapid-growth wood compresses more than dense hardwood. Also, if the spring was wet and windless, the wood will not dry as well as during a dry and windy spring.
“If one fells the trunks in winter and leaves them to dry until the end of July, a wall will settle between two and three centimeters per meter of wall height. All vertical building elements such as posts and jamb posts at doors and windows need to have a shrinkage allowance of three centimeters for each meter of length.”
| Translation - English Erskine’s interest in vernacular building methods, his re-interpretation of classical modern, and above all, his “anti-authoritarian” approach to life, have resulted in a building form which has more to do with the satisfaction of needs and feelings than with formal rules. The fenestration responds to the illumination requirements of the interior spaces without a recognizable pattern. In the way Erskine worked with precast panels of fine-pored architectural concrete on the facade, one can detect the influence of Team X and the “Brutalists”, with whom he maintained contact. Due to the various colors and dimensions of the concrete elements, the surface seems lively, varied, and true to its material. Similarities can be found to Mediterranean buildings and farm houses in the British Isles.
For Erskine, what mattered was development of climatically appropriate solutions, and in each case, this generated the exterior form. An example is the corrugated metal cold roof, intended to limit damage from icicles and allow snow to remain. The curved interior ceiling, insulated with thermal concrete panels, has rounded corners, a hallmark of this and Erskine’s other “arctic” buildings.
One could regard the interior as a single volume with various platforms and zones, like a hay shed. This creates freedom, spatial variety, and permits many activities and uses. Not only the overall complex, but the arrangement of the interior reveals a unification of home and professional worlds. A work room is located directly adjacent to the large living room, and Ruth Erskine’s studio on the mezzanine above the kitchen is completely open to the living room.
