All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.

None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.

The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?

No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Ausreichend altmodische Besucher, die nur dastehen und mit ihren anachronistischen Augen schauen wollen, werden durch Fotografen zur Seite geschoben, die es als selbstverständlich ansehen, dass nichts Anderes ihre Sicht stören darf, während sie mit ihrer rituellen Scharfstellung beschäftigt sind. Diese merkwürdigen kameralosen Wesen müssen zur Seite treten, müssen die Rituale abwarten und manchmal sogar ganze Busladungen vorlassen, die, den Gott der Instamatik huldigend, auf die Landschaft losgelassen werden. Völker ganzer Länder betrachten sich als kannibalisiert, verschluckt, eingesogen in das schwarzumrandete starre Auge und ringen den Kannibalen alles mögliche ab. Du wollen Bild von meinem Haus, meinem Kamel? Du zahlen.

Alles wäre halb so schlimm - vielleicht - wenn irgend etwas Lohnenswertes erreicht würde; wenn die ganze Geschäftigkeit und das ganze Rumgeklicke am Ende etwas noch nie Dagewesenes hervorbringen würde, Bilder voller Schönheit oder enthüllte Wahrheiten, zum Beispiel. Aber leider ist das nicht der Fall. Die Kamera ist nur ehrbar gemachtes Graffiti.

Die Kamera ist das Hilfsmittel, mit dem wir uns auf allem für uns Sichtbare verewigen, unter dem Deckmantel der Aufnahme von Weltwundern, die bereits auf wunderbare Weise von Experten eingefangen und in jedem Buch- oder Zeitungsladen verkäuflich sind. Was nützt es, Tante Emma zuhause Postkarten der toskanischen Landschaft zu schicken, wenn wir eh nicht als Beweis für unsere Präsenz im Bilde sind?

Keine Felsformation besitzt eine Wahrheit ohne mich. Das Denkmal besteht nur, weil sich meine Frau daran lehnt. Die Tempelanlage wird erst dann interessant, wenn mein grinsendes Gesicht daneben auftaucht. Mit meiner Kamera eigne ich mir alles Schöne an; ich besitze es, schrumpfe und zähme es und reproduziere es auf meine kahle Wohnzimmerwand, um meinem auserwählten Publikum, bestehend aus Freunden und Familienmitgliedern, die einzig entscheidende Wahrheit über diese Schönheiten zu beweisen: Ich sah sie, ich war da, ich fotografierte sie, also existieren sie.

Immer stärker in den Mittelpunkt der Kaufentscheidung bei einem Automobil rückt neben dem Preis, der technischen Ausstattung und dem Design das Image einer Marke. Denn es dient nicht nur als Entscheidungshilfe, sondern verhilft dem Käufer auch zu einer psychosozialen Identifikation. Unter dem Titel „Analyse der Imagepositionierung der Automobilmarken in Deutschland“ betrachtet die jüngste Studie von Marketing Systems die Entwicklung von automobilen Markenimages in den letzten fünf Jahren. Dabei zeigt diese Studie nicht nur die Imageveränderung einzelner Marken auf, sondern versucht viel mehr Erklärungsansätze für die beobachtete Entwicklung zu finden.

Innerhalb der vergangenen fünf Jahre ist bei den Automobilherstellern der Trend zur Emotionalisierung der Marken unverkennbar. Je nach Potenzial und bereits vorhandenen Grundwerten wurden jedoch unterschiedliche Wege beschritten.

• Generierung von Emotionalität aus technischen Kernkompetenzen heraus, die etwa in der „Freude am Fahren“ oder dem „Cuore Sportivo“ zum Ausdruck kommen.

• Emotionalisierung durch Bildung von Vertrauen, das sich aus hochwertiger Verarbeitung und Zuverlässigkeit der Technik generiert.

• Emotionalisierung durch mehr oder weniger abstrakte „Funfaktoren“ in Ermangelung ausreichender Substanz der Markenwerte.

Wichtiges Instrument bei der Entwicklung oder Verbesserung eines Markenimages ist das Marketing. Somit liefert die Studie entscheidende Aussagen zur Wirkung des Marketing-Mix auf die betrachtete Zielsetzung. Beleuchtet werden insbesondere die Produktpolitik und die Kommunikation. Die Analyse der Preis-Imagepositionierung der Marken rundet das Bild ab.

Wie wirken Vorstöße in Nischen, wie Rückzüge aus bestimmten Segmenten? Welche Wirkung haben technische Innovationen auf das Image? Wie lange hält der Innovationsbonus an? Wie verkraftet eine Marke Phasen modellpolitischer Vernachlässigung? Bei welchen Marken steht die Profilierung der Markenwerte und Kernkompetenzen im Vordergrund, welche stellen Preis-Ausstattungsvorteile und Sondermodellbewerbung in den Vordergrund? Diese und weitere Fragen werden in der Studie beantwortet.

Das Markenimage unterliegt aber auch weiteren Einflussfaktoren. An der A-Klasse oder dem Audi TT läßt sich zum Beispiel die Reaktion der Hersteller auf ein unerwartetes technisches Problem zeigen und dessen Auswirkung auf das Markenimage betrachten.

When deciding which car to buy, the brand image is becoming increasingly important, along with such issues as the price, technical matters and design. Image serves not only to aid the buying decision but also helps the buyer to achieve psycho-social identification. The latest “Marketing Systems” study views the development of cars’ brand images over the past five years under the title “Analysis of the image positioning of car brands in Germany”. This study shows more than the mere image development of individual brands; it also attempts to explain the developments viewed. The trend among car producers to “emotionalise” brands during the past five years is unmistakable. However, depending on the potential and on existing values, a variety of courses of action have been taken.

• The creation of an emotional quality deriving from technical core competency, expressed for example by „Freude am Fahren“ [Driving for Fun] or the „Cuore Sportivo“ [The Sporting Spirit].

• Emotionalising by creating trust deriving from high quality workmanship and technical reliability.

• Emotionalising through to “fun factors” that are more or less intangible and substitute for the missing substance of brand values.

Marketing is an important instrument in the development or improvement of a brand image. Accordingly, the study gives decisive statements regarding the effectiveness of the marketing mix in relation to the goal in view. It throws light on product policy and communication in particular. An analysis of the price image positioning of the brands completes the picture.

How far are advances into particular segments and retreats from others effective? How do technical innovations affect the image? How long does the innovation bonus apply? How does a brand cope with phases of neglect regarding model policy? For which brands is the profiling of brand values and core competencies in the foreground and which brands promote price outfit advantages and advertising for special models? These and further questions are answered in the study.

The brand image also depends on other types of influence. For example, the producers’ reaction to unexpected technical problems such as those on the [Mercedes] A-Class or the Audi TT and their effects on the brand image can be seen from the producers’ reaction.
