SUCCESSFUL MONTE CARLO RALLY PREMIERE FOR SKODA MOTORSPORT TEAM
The Škoda Motorsport factory team presented two Fabia Super 2000 racing cars at this season’s first IRC event, entering a new stage of their Fabia Super 2000 project after nearly two years of development work. Driven by Finns Juho Hänninen and Mikko Markkula and Czechs Jan Kopecký and Petr Starý, respectively, the cars had to cope with challenging conditions including rough weather and have shown that Škoda Motorsport has developed a competitive racing car. The results and performances put in by both drivers, especially over the first two days of the event, are considered very positive and beneficial for further work on the Fabia Super 2000 project.
Finland’s Juho Hänninen was first after the first day, Jan Kopecký, despite technical problems in the first speed test, quickly fought his way up from the 24th place after that test to finish tenth in the end.
On Day 2 the event moved to snow-covered roads near Valence where both Škodas did well again, coming first in four speed tests of altogether six – Juho Hänninen three times and Jan Kopecký once. Moreover, when Jan finished second after his team-mate in one of the tests, the team was applauded by fans for achieving a “double“. However, the Finn had back luck in the last speed test of that day, falling down to the third place after one of his tyres got punctured. Continuing his way up, Jan Kopecký finished seventh.
The final part of the event brought the teams back to Monte Carlo. Although Juho Hänninen had to give up after an accident, he has shown that his experience is a great asset for Škoda Motorsport and that he is a good choice for the Fabia Super 2000 vehicle and the entire team. His performance at Stage 2, including three speed test wins, drew massive attention from both fans and media. Continuing his catch-up mission, Jan Kopecký put in another good performance and finished fourth in the total rankings.
Commenting on the factory team’s Monte Carlo Rally performance, Head of Škoda Motorsport Michal Hrabánek said: “In the first place, we are glad to have successfully completed this important stage of our vehicle development project and opened the door to a new one. The Fabia Super 2000 project is running on two complementary levels, racing and sales. We have certainly made a competitive car that is prepared to compete with the best in its class, and I also consider the team’s performance at this year’s Monte Carlo Rally good. I daresay we have shown our strength, but there’s still a lot of work ahead of us and we have to work as hard and efficiently as we have been working so far and never lose respect for our competitors. I wish to thank all of the team members, i.e., the crews, mechanics, engineers and other people involved for excellent teamwork, and believe that this Monte Carlo premiere will motivate all of them to continue working hard. I also believe that we have done a great job in terms of promoting the Škoda brand. Our further racing agenda will depend on detailed analysis of the Monte Carlo Rally performance, but our plan to take part in a further five events of the 2009 IRC series remains unchanged for the time being.”
Summarising the whole competition, Juho Hänninen said: “Everything was going my way until Friday morning. I was surprised how fast I was able to go – the technicians did an excellent job and the car was working perfectly. Our tyre choices were very good, too, mainly thanks to my “on-track spies”. I believe that the car’s future results will be very good and that this event has shown its great potential. However, a lot of hard work is still ahead of us. I am sorry to have been too fast in Friday’s speed test, I simply pushed it too hard as I wanted to make up for my one-minute loss. It’s a pity, as the entire team has done a fantastic job here.”
Finishing fourth in the total rankings and getting five points in the driver competition, Jan Kopecký was more than happy: “The Fabia Super 2000 has shown how fast it is, and it’s apparent that the direction we have set is good. All the kilometres done in last year’s tests are an important factor behind this success. I wish to thank the whole team and the Škoda company for helping us move this project ahead, as well as the Czech fans along the roads for supporting us loudly.“

Заводская команда Skoda Motorsport представила два гоночных автомобиля Fabia Super 2000 на первом в этом сезоне ралли серии Intercontinental Rally Challenge, войдя в новый этап проекта Fabia Super 2000, которому предшествовали почти два года разработок. Автомобилям под управлением финнов Юхо Ханнинена (Juho Hänninen) и Микко Марккулы (Mikko Markkula) и чехов Яна Копецки (Jan Kopecký) и Петра Стары (Petr Starý) предстояло справиться со сложными условиями, включая непогоду, и показать, что Skoda Motorsport создала конкурентоспособный гоночный автомобиль. На завершающем этапе ралли команды снова вернулись в Монте-Карло. Несмотря на то, что Юхо Ханнинен вынужден был выйти из соревнований из-за аварии, он показал, что его опыт очень ценен для Skoda Motorsport, и что он стал хорошим выбором для автомобиля Fabia Super 2000 и в целом для команды. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, Ukraine declared independence in 1991. The construction of the new Ukrainian state was anything but simple. The separation of Ukraine out of the integrated Soviet economy posed considerable problems. Politically too, the development of a democratic form of government with the creation of political parties and the development of an independent judiciary were major challenges. Unfortunately in Ukraine, unlike in Poland, there was no complete break with the past. Essentially the same people with many of the same institutions which had governed Ukraine as part of the Soviet Union, headed the new independent state. The 1990s therefore became largely a lost decade for Ukraine, in which there was a major decline in real GDP, an increase in poverty and during which the seeds of crony capitalism were sown.
Poland was the first state to recognize Ukrainian independence and, in spite of the history of complex relations between the two countries, became a major sponsor of Ukraine in the West.
However in the 1990s Poland and the other states of central and eastern Europe were concentrating on their preparation for integration with the European Union and had little time or inclination to deviate from this course, until the accession treaty was signed in 2002.
For the European Union too, policy during the 1990s was essentially absorbed with the creation of a Monetary Union and with the preparation for the fifth enlargement of the Union. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe had disintegrated into chaos, but a chaos which did not directly threaten the European Union. The EU's response therefore to the challenges posed by state-making in the East was rather weak.
Economically the 1990s were a disastrous period for Ukraine. At the time of the 1998 economic crisis Ukraine's economy was only approximately 40% of the size it had been in 1990. While these statistics may be somewhat dubious, it is clear that the economy contracted severely during this period. As one of the key industrial regions of the former Soviet Union with a considerable share of its heavy industry, Ukraine was particularly hard hit both by the break-up of the Soviet Union and by the closure of a considerable proportion of its industry. Although it recovered from the 10,000% inflation in 1993, the economy did not start growing again until the year 2000.

Україна проголосила незалежність в 1991 році після розпаду Радянського Союзу. Розбудова нової української держави не була простою. Відокремлення від об’єднаної радянської економіки спричинило суттєві проблеми. В політичному плані ситуація також була складною. Головними завданнями були формування демократичної форми правління, створення політичних партій та формування незалежної судової системи. В Україні, на відміну від Польщі, нажаль не відбулося повного оновлення. Нову незалежну державу очолили ті ж самі люди і майже ті самі установи, що керували нею у складі Радянського Союзу. Тому 1990-ті роки багато в чому стали для України втраченим десятиріччям, яке характеризувалося значним зниженням реального ВВП, посиленням бідності та зародженням кланового капіталізму.
Польща першою визнала незалежність України і, незважаючи на складні відносини в минулому, стала її головним захисником перед заходом. Однак в 1990-х роках Польща та інші країни центральної та східної Європи були зосереджені на підготовці до вступу до Європейського союзу і до підписання договору вступу в 2002 році практично не мали ні часу, ні бажання займатися іншими питаннями.
Сам Європейський союз у 1990-х роках переймався переважно створенням Валютного союзу та підготовкою до свого п’ятого розширення. Після розпаду СРСР східна Європа хаотично розділилася, але такий хаос не становив прямої загрози ЄС. Тому його реакція на державотворчі процеси, що відбувалися на сході, була досить слабкою.
1990-ті роки були катастрофічними для економіки України. Підчас кризи 1998 року вона становила лише 40% свого об’єму в 1990 році. Саму цифру можна поставити під сумнів, але суттєве зниження економічного рівня в цей період очевидне. Україна була одним із найважливіших промислових регіонів колишнього СРСР та містила суттєву частку його важкої промисловості, тому розвал Радянського Союзу та закриття значної частини промислових підприємств завдали їй особливо важкого удару. І хоча в 1993 році Україна змогла оговтатися від 10 000% інфляції, новий економічний зріст почався лише в 2000 році.
