Imperial Suites’ first American hotel revels in sheer, unabashed luxury. Acquired by the Hong Kong-based hotel company in 1988, the Beaux Arts-style former Grosvenor Hotel now offers Asia’s utmost standard of service in Midtown Manhattan. The tradition that began in 1928 with the original Pearl Hotel in Hong Kong now extends to a host of other fine hostelries around the world.
Once past the five-bayed Fifth Avenue facade of hand-carved limestone, guests of The Pearl check in at a small, discreet front desk. From the reception area to the restaurants, all public spaces surround visitors with the swirling romance of Art Nouveau styling, a mode that reached its first height of glory in late nineteenth century Paris. Works of art by such French masters as Majorelle, Gallé, Mercier, and Gaillard set off handmade European carpets, marble floors and staircases, mahogany and burl wood wall panelling and glittering chandeliers.
The opulence of Paris in an earlier age infuses the private quarters as well. Among 250 rooms and suites, the largest measures over 2,500 square feet. All are spacious and filled with custom-designed furnishings-such as Art Nouveau cabinets to hide remote-control TV’s, king-sized hardwood head-boards with curvaceous Belle Epoque designs, billowing balloon shades covering the windows, and cherubs and flowers garlanding the lamps.
Marble baths soothe travellers with spacious showers, six-foot tubs, bidets, robes, slippers, and Lanvin toiletries displayed on white china trays. Messages arrive at a guest’s front door on a silver platter carried by a page in white gloves and pillbox hat. Il primo hotel della Imperial Suites in America è un concentrato di lusso.
