However, it was during this very decade that managers from Finish Company found themselves faced with the break-up of the one –sixth of earth’s total land surface. Nokia reported the sharpest decline in sales of one of its main product… toilet paper. But Nokia did not flinch in the face of new challenge and shifting its focus carved out a leading niche in the telecommunications market in the late 20th century.
The history of Nokia goes back to 12th May 1865.That was when Frederick Idestam, a Finish mining engineer, obtained a permit to build a wood pulp mill on the banks of the Nokia river . Industrialization, urbanization and rapid rise in the number of offices springing up all over the city led to extra demands for paper and cardboard. The small mill thus grew into a pulp/paper plant and attracted a very large workforce leading to the emergence of city called Nokia, its name eponymous with the river on whose banks it was built.
An increasing demand for paper products in the late1960s compelled the Nokia plant to turn to importing timber from Russia and Sweden. The Nokia Corporation that was set up February 1871 started exporting its products to the markets of Denmark, Germany, England, Poland and even China.
After Charles Goodyear from Philadelphia discoed the vulcanization method and waterproof rubber, the material gained world popularity. Rubber gained entry to Finland in the late 19th century. Waterproof raincoats and boots became must-have pieces of apparel for citizens of the country. Rubber soon takes a wide hold on both the consumer and business markets of Finland. Industrialization created an overwhelming need for equipment with a wide range of rubber parts. The Finish Rubber Works (FRW) was the largest manufacturer of such parts in Finland. When FRW Company decided to relocate from Helsinki to some outlying province, the choice fell on territory in vicinity of Nokia. The decision was largely dictated by need to buy cheap electricity from Nokia located on the banks of the river, which was not only the main attraction of surrounding landscape but also a generation of electric power to be cheaply obtained and solid.
In 1912 a new company knows as Finish Cable Work (FCW) opened in the center of Helsinki. A strong demand for power transmission and the successful development of telephone and telegraph wires led a rapid march of progress for the company. In the aftermath of the Second World War, FCW became a dominant company in the filed of wire production.
In 1920 Nokia Corporation, Finish Rubber Works and Finish Cable Works merged to form the Nokia Group. Included in the industrial conglomerate, Nokia experienced a succession of tumultuous social, political and economic events such as Roaring Twenties, The Great Depression, incursion of the Soviet Red Army into Finland and Second World War.
Although Nokia lost its corporate independence in became common brand of the three companies. FCW soon embroiled Nokia in and absolutely new field: construction of power stations.
