Die Bestimmung der Tonlochpositionen bei Blasintrumenten war bis weit in das 19. Jahrhundert hinein reine Sache der Erfahrung, des Probierens und Kopierens. Tomlitz formulierte zwar die Erkenntnis, daß “die Abteilung der Löcher … keine andere, als eine monochordisch-mathematische Abteilung oder Einteilung sein kann”, relativierte diesen Grundsatz aber im gleichen Zuge durch den Hinweis auf die Schwierigkeit, daß “bei der Flöte auf die Finger Rücksicht genommen werden muß.”
Diese Rücksicht auf naturgegebene Beschränkungen im Fingergebrauch konnte erst aufgegeben werden, als Theobald Boehm mit seiner 'neu construirten Flöte' von 1832 einen zweckerfüllenden Klappen-Mechanismus mit einem optimierten Griffsystem bot. Nur unter dieser Voraussetzung war ihm möglich durchzuhalten, “die Abschnitte der Luftsäule nach dem Monochord einzuteilen und den Löchern nach dem Verhältnisse der Töne gegeneinander, ihre Stellen un Größen zu bestimmen”. In seiner Flötenbauschrift vor 1847 behandelte Boehm die Bestimmung der Löcherstellung bei der neuen Zylinder-Metallflöte auf nur einer Seite verhältnismäßig knapp, indem er durch ein Beispiel zeigte, wie man “die Längen für alle übringen dazwischen liegenden Intervalle” selbst ermitteln könnte.
Ein Anlaß, die Tonlochpositionsberechnungen zu vertiefen und auf andere Klappenblasinstrumente anzuwenden, war offensichtlich der Besuch des englischen Oboevirtuosen A.L. Lavigne bei Boehm in München im Herbst 1850. Unter ausdrücklichem Hinweis auf die mit Professor Karl Schafhäutl entwickelten thoretischen Grundlagen auf die Mithilfe von Lavigne verfaßte Boehm zur Pariser Weltausstellung von 1855 eine Abhandlung, deren Hauptdaten in den Ausstellungsbericht übernommen wurden. | Translation - English
Well into the 19th century, determining tonehole position for wind instruments was still purely a matter of experience, experimentation, and copying. While Tromlitz stated that “the placement of toneholes... must necessarily be based on a mathematical-monochordal calculation," he simultaneously moderated this principle with the admission that, “with the flute, deference to human fingers is necessary."
These restrictions on correct tonehole placement could only be overcome once Theobald Boehm offered his `newly designed flute' of 1832, which featured a keyed mechanism optimised for the human hand. Only then was he able to accurately divide the air column according to mathematical principles, and determine the correct placement and size of the toneholes in relationship to each other." In Boehm's flutebuilding text of 1847, he dealt with determining tonehole position comparitively concisely on just a single page, demonstrating by means of an example of how one could determine for oneself “the lengths of all remaining intervals in-between."
A visit by the English oboe virtuoso A.L. Lavigne to Boehm's Munich workshop in the autumn of 1850 gave Boehm an opportunity to refine his calculations and apply the system to other keyed wind instruments. With the help of Lavigne, Boehm wrote a treatise based on his theories developed with Professor Karl Schafhäutl. The treatise was published for the Exposition Universelle of 1855, and the main points of the work were included in the event's official report.

BMW R 90 S: 1973-1976
Schon lange hatten die BMW-Motorradfans auf ein Modell mit erhöhtem Hubraum gewartet. Zwar war eine 900er Version bereits parallel zur /5-Modellreihe entwickelt worden, doch erst mit der Präsentation der /6-Modellreihe im Oktober 1973 konnten die Kunden zugreifen. In der Presse wurde bereits 1971 Appetit durch den ersten Fahrbericht einer Vorserienmaschine in der Zeitschrift “Motorrad”, Ausgabe vom 24. Juli – also zwei Jahre vor Serienbeginn – gemacht. Klacks war begeistert, den Hinterradreifen hatter er nach 1.600 km glatt gefahren. Aber das Modell war noch nicht serienreif, und so mahnte er: “Die erzielten Geschwindigkeiten, die Vibrationen des Motors, das fühlbare höhere Drehmoment sind auch Gründe dafür, daß man sich um das Fahrwerk einschließlich der Bremsen kümmern muß... diese unheimlich schnelle und schnell beschleunigende Maschine dürfte manchen Fahrer überfordern!”
Doch nur wenige Wochen später erschien von der Motorenbaufirma Kayser bereits eine Anzeige, in der der Umbau aller /5-Modelle auf 900 cm3 Hubraum angeboten wurde. Darüber hinaus gab es die Option auf ein Fünfgang-Getriebe.
Zusätzlicher Druck im Kampf um die Gunst der Motorradkäufer lastete auf BMW durch die neuen Superbikes aus japanischer Fertigung. Insbesondere die Kawasaki Z 900 setzte 1972 mit 82 PS Leistung und einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von über 200 km/h neue Maßstäbe.
Mit der Vorstellung der neuen BMW- /6-Modellreihe rückten vor allem die beiden 900 cm3 -Topmodelle in den Fokus der Interessenten.
Und hier war es widerum die R 90 S die sich auch optisch von den drei Tourenmodellen abhob, sie war damals das “Königs”-Modell im Hause BMW. | Translation - English
BMW R 90 S: 1973-1976
BMW fans had long been waiting for a model with increased displacement, and while a 900cc version had been developed alongside the /5 series, it wasn't until the introduction of the /6 series in October 1973 that customers could actually get their hands on what they'd been waiting for. The press had already whet the public's appetite with the first test drive report of a prototype in Motorrad magazine on July 24, 1971- more than two years before the series' introduction. Klacks was impressed: the rear tire came back bald after 1,600 km. But he warned the bike was not yet ready for series production: “ The high speeds attained, the motor vibration, and the noticeably higher torque all indicate that the suspension (including brakes) still needs some work... this unusually quick and fast-accelerating machine may prove too much for some to handle!”
Then, only a few weeks after the Motorrad report, an ad by the Kayser motor company appeared offering to upgrade to 900cc any /5 series model. An option for a five-speed transmission was also offered.
The new superbikes from Japan were also increasing the pressure on BMW in the fight for the motocycling public's affection. In particular, the 1972 Kawasaki Z900, with 82 hp and a top speed of 200 kph set new performance standards.
With the introduction of BMW's new /6 series, the two 900cc models quickly became the focus of attention. But the unique appearance of the R90S set it apart from the three touring models, and at the time it was the superstar of Haus BMW
