I also read and speak a certain amount of French, Italian and Irish. Most of my clients in recent years have been from the marine biology and general science sectors but I also enjoy translating all sorts of texts from anthropology to horticulture to travel to mysticism. I'm not so interested in business, law, economics or finance.
My university degree in Modern and Mediaeval Languages (Christ's College, Cambridge, M.A. 1978) saw me specialising in 13th century Italian Literature, the Goethezeit in Germany and 20th century European Drama, but none of this was very useful when after a Post-Graduate Cert Ed. I started school teaching at a comprehensive school in a deprived area of the English Midlands.
In later life I trained and worked as a massage therapist, owned and ran a bookshop, played in a band, organised recycling schemes, hired out snorkelling equipment, worked as a gardener, carpenter and marquee erector, taught Irish dancing classes, spent a lot of time swimming with wild dolphins, worked as a tour guide on whale-watching boats and organised whale-watching trips, helped build a wood-fired pottery kiln, restored numerous houses, trained as a TEFL teacher and a personal coach, led workshops in personal development, read a lot of books and planted a lot of trees. I have a very wide range of interests and other activities which helps me to see where people are coming from when I read their texts.
In between everything else I have always worked with words, whether writing, editing or translating. Since 1999, I have been working independently as a freelance translator and text editor. Since 2006 I have been living in Sweden but I maintain links to the UK and Ireland, where I lived previously. I am not so immersed in any one language or culture that I have forgotten what real English sounds like!
