As you linger on the mountain pass to admire the rugged reflection of Beinn an Lochain in the waters of Loch Restil, spare a thought for the weary sheep drovers who used to pause here for breath after the long steep climb from Loch Fyne. “Rest and Be Thankful” is the name of this spot, a title coined by the soldiers who built the first road here 250 years ago. Since then its wild beauty has thrilled② generations of crofters and passing travellers. And now you.
Of course your journey through Scotland may not take you this way, but wherever you go you’re in for a treat③. You might linger in the Borders④ to explore the dignified ruins of once-powerful abbeys or fish for plump salmon in the Tweed. Or follow in the footsteps of Rob Roy and Walter Scott through the Trossachs to soak up “the scenery of a fairy dream”, as Scott described it. Perhaps you’ll potter around colourful fishing villages in the Kingdom of Fife and tee off on the legendary Old Course in St Andrews⑤. To cause to quiver, tremble, or vibrate. 使颤动、战栗或振动 因此，可以理解成“感到极度刺激；心醉神驰；心驰神往”但如果用“心醉神驰”等词，又会使译文原本较长的句子变得更长，只好尽量缩短，用两个音节的“陶醉”来翻译。 ③具体化翻译方法：如果原文比较抽象，在译文中难以让读者体会原文的意境，或者译文如果照本宣科地翻译，会不太流畅，那么可以考虑将原文抽象的词，译成比较具体的词，反之亦然。 例如，本句中的“treat”指：1 Something, such as one's food or entertainment, that is paid for by someone else. 招待，由别人付钱的东西，如食物或娱乐2 A source of a special delight or pleasure: 乐事，一种特别的欣喜或乐趣来源。(参见《美国传统辞典》)，把“美酒佳肴”“赏心乐事”之类的比较抽象的词，翻译成较为具体“风光”，能使读者有较为真切的美的感受。 ④增译法的运用： You might linger in the Borders“你可能会在苏格兰和英格兰交界的地方留连忘返”。作为一名翻译，不能死抱字典，而不发挥译者自己的主观能动性；有时原文语焉不详，如果照本宣科地死译，读者就会不知所云；因此需要根据上下文的内容进行增译，使原文读者熟知的东西也能为译文读者所接受。例如本文中的“Borders”一词，如果我们照直翻译成“边境地区”，由于信息不完整，读者就会感到困惑：到底是哪个边境地区呢？因此参考译文译成“苏格兰和英格兰交界的地方”，通过增加了一些词，减少了信息模糊，就会解除读者的疑惑。If it’s drama you’re after, you’ll head for the Highlands, a vast swathe of untamed wilderness fringed by mile upon mile of fretted coastline dotted with islands. “如果你要探寻戏剧的踪迹，就去苏格兰高地吧，那是一片广袤无垠、粗旷狭长的原野，两端镶嵌着绵延不绝的海岸线，点缀着大大小小的岛屿”。增加了“那是”两个字，就起到舒缓语气的作用，通过“那是”这样的连接词再现了原文同位语结构所体现的简洁灵动的美。还有对“the Highlands”的翻译，增加了“苏格兰”三字，减少了译文的信息欠缺，使得译文较为明白晓畅。 还有第一段的“And now you”实际上是“And now it thrills you”。因此，译成汉语时运用“addition”即增译的技巧，将原文省略的部分翻译出来：“眼下又使你陶醉其中。” ⑤“或者在充满神奇色彩的圣安德鲁斯老球场体验一把”，虽然全篇文章无疑是一篇描述异域秀丽风光的揽胜美文，但文中也不妨来点口语化的表达，这样可以增加文章的情趣，使文章较为活泼佻达(另见第一段Since then的译文“打那以后，”等。但切记：这样的口语化用词不能过滥，否则就会与整篇文章的风格不符，削弱此类高雅文章的品味。 ⑥the malt whisky trail “纯麦威士忌酒香弥漫的小道”：对于英语各种修饰语的运用，在进行英译汉的时候，必须能够做到胸有成竹，信手拈来，必须能够根据目的语的表达习惯进行排列组合，否则译出来的文句必然十分拗口。其他地方也有此类汉语译文的重新组合搭配情况，请体会。 ⑦译文的同义复现手法：“这些景象随着季节的交替和早晚的更迭而变幻无常”，应尽量避免使用同样的词语，而应追求“同义复现”，即用不同的词表达同样的意义或概念，这种现象在英文中非常普遍，母语为英语的人写起英语文章，避免词语的重复，几乎达到一种“病态”，但正是这种追求表达用语的变化，才使其文章繁富，富有美感。汉语中也有这种同义复现现象，请读者留意。 “the name of this spot, a title coined”“此地的名称，这个地名是 给起的”。经常接触英汉两种语言的人知道，汉语多重复而英语忌重复：汉语指代某个名称时，往往重复使用同一个词，而英语则通常在下文中用同义词来表达而力戒重复。在此文中“name”和“title”指的是一个意思，而汉语则用同义词的“地名”和“地名”来表达。这是因为，如果用“这个头衔”、“这个称号”“这个称谓”之类的词来翻译“title”，反而分散了读者的注意力，干扰了其对下文的关注，从而扰乱了文章的脉络，破坏了“文气”。Coined一词，也是原文作者为了用词奇崛的需要而选的，但在汉语中为了文气的连贯，应当追求语气的平和。故此，用了重复用词的译法。 ⑧长句的处理问题：对于那些“的”“地”等的连接词，如果在不影响译文通顺流畅的情况下可以省略，应尽量省略以求简洁流畅。 ⑨感叹词的使用，英语原文中有时虽然没有感叹词，但从其“文脉”和语气来看，如果加上感叹词能再现作者的语气，那么加上感叹词，既增加了文章的感染力和美学价值，又增加文章的整体协调，那么应增加一些感叹词。 ⑩四字结构的运用：Of course your journey through Scotland may not take you this way, but wherever you go you’re in for a treat. 自然，你穿越苏格兰的旅程未必会带你来到这里，但是，无论你朝哪个方向前行，都会领略到无限风光。the dignified ruins of once-powerful abbeys那些曾经声威赫赫的教堂遗址 如今依然气势恢宏 “the scenery of a fairy dream” “梦幻仙境的美景” that treacherous night那个背信弃义的夜晚tickle your tastebuds沁人心脾untamed wilderness广袤无垠、粗旷狭长的原野mile upon mile of fretted coastline绵延不绝的海岸线陆地与大海狭路相逢，互不相让，形成一道道蔚为壮观的景象！ 文学乃至诗歌语言的运用：原文是一首富有诗歌意味的美文，译文也应当尽量运用优美的语言加以迻译，方能达到“异曲同工”之妙，不辱没了原文。参考译文中这种文学用语和诗歌语言可谓比比皆是，比较忠实的反映了原文的“风姿”，在文体风格上比较忠实地再现了原文的语言美。例如：“如果你要探寻戏剧的踪迹……那是一片广袤无垠、粗旷狭长的原野，两端镶嵌着绵延不绝的海岸线，点缀着大大小小的岛屿；此刻你可能正在凝望壁立千仞的山峰、波光粼粼的海湾或荒无人烟的沼泽”。等等。 英语长句较多且多主从复合句及定语、状语成份等，往往句中套句，而汉语一般都为一个个独立的小短句，因此在英译汉的时候，为了达到地道简洁流畅的效果，有时需要将原文进行切割截短，或增加词汇，使之成为一些独立的短句。例如原文首句：As you linger on the mountain pass to admire the rugged reflection of Beinn an Lochain in the waters of Loch Restil, spare a thought for the weary sheep drovers who used to pause here for breath after the long steep climb from Loch Fyne，从原文角度来看，这句英文错落有致，起伏跌宕，真实地再现了苏格兰那粗犷秀美的风光，但如果译成“当你逡巡在山口，面对雷斯蒂尔湖那一汪碧波中本安洛奇恩山那嶙峋的倒影赞叹不已的时候，请想想从前那些疲惫的赶羊人吧！”就会显得突兀拗口，甚至让人有些透不过气来的感觉，并且译文中的“一汪碧波”和“嶙峋的倒影”这样一些美文也让人无暇顾及和欣赏。但如果翻译成“游人驻足山口，但见本安洛奇恩山那参差错落的剪影倒映在雷斯蒂尔湖那一汪碧波之中，令人叹为观止！此时，请想想从前那些疲惫的赶羊人吧”，删除了原译文中的“当……的时候”，削弱了局促之感，再增加了“但见”一词，舒缓了语气，再将“赞叹不已”后移，另成一句，译成“令人叹为观止”，通过这样几种方式的处理，最后的参考译文就显得舒缓自然了许多，也能再现原文的跌宕起伏之感；当然，还可以在参考译文的“剪影”一词后增加一个逗号，也能增添缓和语气的效果。另外，参考译文为了服务于这个目的，在对“linger”一词的处理上，也是进行了斟酌：因为较之“逡巡”这个具有动态感的词，“驻足”有了一种稍事歇息的含义，使读者心理产生一种静态。那么“linger”一词翻译成“驻足”是否忠实原文？《The New International Webster’s Comprehensive Dictionary of the English Language 1996 edition》对linger解释vi. 1 To stay on as if reluctant to leave; delay going. 2. to move slowly; saunter; loiter: to linger on the way可见这个词第一个含义是“不愿离去”，第二个释义才是“闲逛；漫步”；因此译成“驻足”是完全可以的，另外，从逻辑上讲，只有“驻足”才能更好地欣赏，或者，可以说“游人在留连的时候，肯定在某一段时间、至少某一瞬间是静止不动的”，译成“驻足”是为了忠实于更大的语言单位，是为服务于全文的需要! “此时，请想想从前那些疲惫的赶羊人吧！他们从法恩湾经过长途跋涉，山路陡峭崎岖，走到此地，稍事喘息。”于前文一脉相承，也是为了简洁地道的需要，对文字进行了切割处理。此外，增加了一些语气助词如“请……吧”和感叹词，是为了增加译文的感染力和说服效果，这是与原文广告文字的说服功能相吻合的。根据现代翻译学理论，原文要达到的功能，也是在翻译时必须予以考虑的因素，因此作了这种处理。 最后想要说明的是，我们20世纪中晚期出生的译界后生，与前辈翻译大师相比，有一个致命的弱点，就是我们的汉语修为不足，古文功底欠缺，很难做到像前辈大家那样翻译起来纵横捭阖，挥洒自如。而要想在翻译领域有成就，不提高自己的古代汉语修养看来是不行的；有些翻译大师，其本人就是诗人、作家，因此在翻译外语诗文的时候自然得心应手，游刃有余。因此，我们还有漫长的路要走。让我们共同努力，追蹑前贤，不辜负长辈对我们的殷切希望，努力拼搏，为中国的翻译与中外文化交流事业，竭尽绵薄，奋斗终生!

A Prize Wining Translator Seeking the Project
A Triple Championship Winner at China Young Translators' Contest in Honour of Han Suyin (for participants below the age of 44), I have done numerous translations, all of which have received high acclaim and accolade. And the film The Silent Holy Stone whose transcripts I translated received numerous awards, such as the Dragons & Tigers Awards of the 24th Canadian Vancouver International film festival, the New Tidal Current Special Awards of the 10th Pusan International Film Festival and the Fipresci Prize of the 30th Hong Kong International Film Festival.

2．教学经验丰富（中学任教3年，在南京国际关系学院读研期间担任两年英语专业本科生的精读、泛读课和地方生队经贸班经贸英语教学工作以及北京国际关系学院研究生部硕士、博士研究生英语教学工作），曾获淮南矿务局系统优质课比赛优质课奖和北京国际关系学院研究生教学成果奖；英文写作流畅优美；电脑操作熟练。
