Roadside Recovery and Home Assistance
In the event of vehicle immobilisation Aston Martin Emergency Service will organise and pay for the costs of taking your Aston Martin to the nearest Aston Martin Dealership, should assistance at home or at the roadside prove unsuccessful.
Traction Control
Warning: It is always the drivers responsibility to drive safely according to the law and with due regard to prevailing conditions.
Warning: Traction Control must never allow the driver to be tempted into taking risks which could affect his or her safety or that of other road users.
Warning: Traction Control cannot overcome consequences of applying too much engine power for prevailing conditions.
Do not maintain engine power at such a level that traction control is operated for long periods (more than about one minute). This reduces fuel to the engine and may cause the exhaust catalysts to overheat. Overheating of the exhaust catalysts can destroy them.
Traction control is a function of DSC, and is operated in association with the DSC system. Traction control prevents excessive wheel spin at standing starts, or during acceleration. Wheel spin is usually caused by excessive use of the accelerator pedal, or slippery, loose or bumpy road surfaces.
To prevent excessive wheel spin and maintain vehicle stability in such situations the traction control system will:
• Brake either of the driven wheels when they start to slip
• Or adapt the engine torque to a level corresponding to the traction available on the road surface
These symptoms are normal and will clear as wheel spin is eliminated and normal engine power is restored.
If vehicle Cruise Control is engaged it will automatically disengage when traction control is operating.
Satellite Navigation
Two modes of operation are available:
Easy Mode
Provides simple functionality to enable the user to select a destination.
Advanced mode
Provides all system functionality.
The Navigation system has all maps and features, for the market area, installed in the vehicle’s electronic memory.
A DVD player is provided to install map and feature up-dates as and when available (Refer to ’Map Updates’, page 9.3).
The locations used in this chapter do not necessarily reflect known places and are for the purpose of describing operating procedures only.
Global Positioning System
The vehicle’s speed sensor and a gyro calculate the current position and the direction of travel of the vehicle using signals from the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite system.
Traffic Message Channel Receiver
Standardised code system for traffic information. The Traffic Message Channel (TMC) receiver seeks the relevant frequency. Transmission occurs via FM frequencies. Transmission is not available everywhere. The system is currently being expanded.

These guns are carried by policemen in short-sleeved shirts and black flak-jackets, alert for terrorists about to blow up Tie-Rack. They are unlikely to confront me directly, but if they do I shall tell them the truth. I shall state my business. I’m planning to stop at Heathrow Airport until I see someone I know. (...)
Astonishingly, I wait for thirty-nine minutes and don’t see one person I know. Not one, and no-one knows me. I’m as anonymous as the drivers with their universal name-cards (some surnames I know), except the drivers are better dressed. Since the kids, whatever I wear looks like pyjamas. Coats, shirts, T-shirts, jeans, suits; like slept-in pyjamas. (...)
I hear myself thinking about all the people I know who have let me down by not leaving early on a Tuesday morning for glamorous European destinations. My former colleagues from the insurance office must still be stuck at their desks, like I always said they would be, when I was stuck there too, wasting my time and unable to settle while Ally moved steadily onward, getting her PhD and her first research fellowship at Reading University, her first promotion.

When Nike breathed its first breath, it inhaled the spirit of two men.
1950s
Before there was the Swoosh, before there was Nike, there were two visionary men who pioneered a revolution in athletic footwear that redefined the industry.
Bill Bowerman was a nationally respected track and field coach at the University of Oregon, who was constantly seeking ways to give his athletes a competitive advantage. He experimented with different track surfaces, re-hydration drinks and most importantly innovations in running shoes. But the established footwear manufacturers of the 1950s ignored the ideas he tried to offer them, so Bowerman began cobbling shoes for his runners.
Phil Knight was a talented middle-distance runner from Portland, who enrolled at Oregon in the fall of 1955 and competed for Bowermans track program. Upon graduating from Oregon, Knight earned his MBA in finance from Stanford University, where he wrote a paper that proposed quality running shoes could be manufactured in Japan that would compete with more established German brands. But his letters to manufacturers in Japan and Asia went unanswered, so Knight took a chance.
He made a cold-call on the Onitsuka Co. in Kobe, Japan, and persuaded the manufacturer of Tiger shoes to make Knight a distributor of Tiger running shoes in the United States. When the first set of sample shoes arrived, Knight sent several pairs to Bowerman, hoping to make a sale. Instead, Bowerman stunned Knight by offering to become his partner, and to provide his footwear design ideas to Tiger.
1960s
They shook hands to form Blue Ribbon Sports, pledged $500 each and placed their first order of 300 pairs of shoes in January 1964. Knight sold the shoes out of the trunk of his green Plymouth Valiant, while Bowerman began ripping apart Tiger shoes to see how he could make them lighter and better, and enlisted his University of Oregon runners to wear-test his creations. In essence, the foundation for what would become Nike had been established.
But Bowerman and Knight each had full-time jobs - Bowerman at Oregon and Knight at a Portland accounting firm - so they needed someone to manage the growing requirements of Blue Ribbon Sports. Enter Jeff Johnson, whom Knight had met at Stanford. A runner himself, Johnson became the first full-time employee of Blue Ribbon Sports in 1965, and quickly became an invaluable utility man for the start-up company.
1970s
He created the first product brochures, print ads and marketing materials, and even shot the photographs for the companys catalogues. Johnson established a mail-order system, opened the first BRS retail store (located in Santa Monica, Calif.) and managed shipping/receiving. He also designed several early Nike shoes, and even conjured up the name Nike in 1971.
Around this same time, the relationship between BRS and Onitsuka was falling apart. Knight and Bowerman were ready to make the jump from being a footwear distributor to designing and manufacturing their own brand of athletic shoes.
They selected a brand mark today known internationally as the Swoosh, which was created by a graphic design student at Portland State University named Carolyn Davidson. The new Nike line of footwear debuted in 1972, in time for the U.S. Track & Field Trials, which were held in Eugene, Ore.
One particular pair of shoes made a very different impression literally on the dozen or so runners who tried them. They featured a new innovation that Bowerman drew from his wifes waffle iron an outsole that had waffle-type nubs for traction but were lighter than traditional training shoes.
With a new logo, a new name and a new design innovation, what BRS now needed was an athlete to endorse and elevate the new Nike line. Fittingly for the company founded by Oregonians, they found such a young man from the small coastal town of Coos Bay, Ore. His name: Steve Prefontaine.
Prefontaine electrified the packed stands of Oregons Hayward Field during his college career from 1969 to 1973. He never lost any race at his home track over the one-mile distance, and quickly gained national exposure thanks to cover stories on magazines like Sports Illustrated and his fourth-place finish in 1972 in the 5,000m in Munich.
Pre challenged Bowerman, Johnson and BRS in general to stretch their creative talents. In turn, he became a powerful ambassador for BRS and Nike after he graduated from Oregon, making numerous appearances on behalf of BRS and sending pairs of Nike shoes to prospective runners along with personal notes of encouragement.
His tragic death at age 24 in 1975 cut short what many believed would have been an unparalleled career in track at the time of his death, he held American records in seven distances from 2,000m to 10,000m. But Prefontaines fiery spirit lives on within Nike; Knight has often said that Pre is the soul of Nike.
1980s
Nike entered the 1980s on a roll, thanks to the successful launch of Nike Air technology in the Tailwind running shoe in 1979. By the end of 1980, Nike completed its IPO and became a publicly traded company. This began a period of transition, where several of Nikes early pioneers decided to move on to other pursuits. Even Phil Knight stepped down as president for more than a year in 1983-1984, although he remained the chairman of the board and CEO.
By the mid-1980s, Nike had slipped from its position as the industry leader, in part because the company had badly miscalculated on the aerobics boom, giving upstart competitors an almost completely open field to develop the business. Fortunately, the debut of a new signature shoe for an NBA rookie by the name of Michael Jordan in 1985 helped bolster Nikes bottom line.
In 1987, Nike readied a major product and marketing campaign designed to regain the industry lead and differentiate Nike from its competitors. The focal point was the Air Max, the first Nike footwear to feature Nike Air bags that were visible. The campaign was supported by a memorable TV ad whose soundtrack was the original Beatles recording of Revolution.
A year later, Nike built on its momentum from the Revolution campaign by launching a broad yet empowering series of ads with the tagline Just do it. The series included three ads with a young two-sport athlete named Bo Jackson, who espoused the benefits of a new cross-training shoe.
In 1989, Nikes cross-training business exploded, thanks in part to the incredibly popular Bo Knows ad campaign. By the end of the decade, Nike had regained its position as the industry leader, the first and only time a company in the athletic footwear/apparel industry has accomplished such a feat. Nike has never relinquished that position again.
1990s
Buoyed by a series of successful product launches and marketing campaigns, Nike entered the 1990s by christening its beautiful world headquarters in suburban Portland, Oregon. In November of 1990, Portland became the first home to a new retail-as-theatre experience called Niketown, which would earn numerous architectural design and retail awards and spawn more than a dozen other Niketown locations around the USA and internationally.
While Nike had designed footwear and apparel for golf and soccer for a number of years, the mid-1990s signaled a deepening commitment to truly excel in these sports. In 1994, Nike signed several individual players from what would be the World Cup-winning Brazilian National Team. In 1995, Nike signed the entire team, and began designing the teams distinctive uniform. Nike also signed the US mens and womens national soccer teams, as well as dozens of national teams around the world.
In 1996, Nike Golf landed a vastly talented but as-yet-unproven young golfer named Eldrick Tiger Woods for a reported $5 million per year. Competitors laughed and critics howled at Nikes folly, until Tiger won the 1997 Masters by a record 12 strokes. No one is laughing now.
Nike also began investing in the sport of cycling, including a promising young cyclist who appeared to be on his way to success until he was diagnosed with cancer. He lost most of his sponsors, but Nike elected to stay with him. In 1999, Lance Armstrongs incredible comeback resulted in the first of what would be seven consecutive Tour de France titles.
2000s
Nike rang in the new millennium with a new footwear cushioning system called Nike Shox, which debuted during Sydney in 2000. The development of Nike Shox culminated more than 15 years of perseverance and dedication, as Nike designers stuck with their idea until technology could catch up. The result was a cushioning and stability system worthy of joining Nike Air as the industrys gold standard.
Just as Nikes products have evolved, so has Nikes approach to marketing. The 2002 Secret Tournament campaign was Nikes first truly integrated, global marketing effort. Departing from the traditional big athlete, big ad, big product formula, Nike created a multi-faceted consumer experience in support of the World Cup.
Secret Tournament incorporated advertising, the Internet, public relations, retail and consumer events to create excitement for Nikes soccer products and athletes in a way no single ad could ever achieve. This new integrated approach has become the cornerstone for Nike marketing and communications.
Today, Nike continues to seek new and innovative ways to develop superior athletic products, and creative methods to communicate directly with our consumers. Nike Free, Nike+ and Nike Sphere are just three examples of this approach.

Are the social protagonists sufficiently conscious of the necessity of this debate and of its importance? How can they participate in it?
The environmental NGOs are obviously very present in the debate, as is normal. The trade union organizations are becoming more and more interested in it, as are the employers’ organizations. The development NGOs are perhaps a little bit behind, but in a general manner the tendency is towards the broadening of participation in international conferences. In my opinion this is a very positive point.
It is not just a question of being present as spectator: these conferences are also an extraordinary occasion to share knowledge and to collectivize experience. Information is obviously a precondition. Without it no debate is possible. That is why I devote time to answering interviews and to meeting social actors, whoever they are.
But information is not enough: we need places for the debate, it has to be organized and those who take part on it have to know that it will serve some purpose. It is not a question of discussing for the sake of it.
What message are you carrying in this debate, as a climatologist?
Everyone can see that the impacts of climate change are becoming more powerful. The analyses of the group of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) can no longer be considered as alarmist. If we want to stay below 2˚C of temperature rise, we will have to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 80 per cent on a world level, well before the end of the century.
The emissions of the developed countries first of all, because they are the primary countries responsible and they have considerable means at their disposal. But also the emissions of developing countries. Without this global effort there is quite simply no solution possible, given the enormous mass of carbonic gas that has accumulated in the atmosphere over the last centuries.
Like very many specialists I consider that the situation is serious and requires much more resolute action than what has been put in place or is being envisaged by the international community. In relation to this I would draw your attention to the fact that several researchers, and not the least important ones, consider that the ceiling of 2˚C of maximum increase in temperature is too high and that it must be lowered.

So there is urgency?
There is urgency, yes, but that is not a reason to act with precipitation. Whatever we do, the inertia of the climate system confronts us with an inevitable rise in temperature. We have ten years. In the course of these ten years, very radical measures will have to be taken in order to save the climate in the following fifty years, and beyond that.
Rather than rushing ahead and taking spectacular measures whose articulation is not always sufficiently thought out, it is a question of preparing a global plan, including all the aspects of the problem. It is in this sense that the decade before us must be considered as decisive.
If it were possible to reduce emissions by 80 per cent in ten years without creating very great difficulties for the majority of humanity, I would be the first to argue for doing so.
But it is not possible. The plan to be worked out can therefore have no other goal than to limit to the maximum the causes and the effects of climate change, while knowing that these effects will be serious for certain populations.
From there comes the importance of adapting to changes, principally in the Third World, and as a complement to the reduction of emissions. This adaptation can take different forms.
For the small island states, it would probably involve migrating. Tuvalu has begun negotiations with Australia and New Zealand, and as you know they have got off to a bad start.
Beyond the migration of populations that are confronted with the rise in the level of the ocean, what should the plan that you evoke consist of?
I am neither Nicholas Stern nor God the Father. I have neither the resources, nor the personnel, nor the competences to reply alone to this question.
The problem that we have to confront is without precedent. To claim to have a ready-made solution would be pretentious. I am sceptical and distrustful towards this kind of discourse.
I have only one personal conviction: we need action on a very large scale, coordinated on a world scale, which will only be effective if it is presented in the form of a plan.
I am ready to think about it with all those who want to think, preferably in the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention. The plan has to be built up. It is not the job of scientists alone to elaborate it. They can enrich the discussions, but the answer is on the level of society. We need a wide-ranging debate.
If a plan was put on the table by a group of experts, other experts would consider it to be unrealistic, populations would consider it unacceptable, and it would be contested by the people who would have to implement it.
Even if I had such a plan, it would only be an outline, one piece to put among many others. I think that it should at least contain the following elements: measures making possible a fairly rapid transition towards models of development that are much less energy-consuming, based on giving priority to renewable energies, and territorial planning which reduces the demand for automobile transport, very strict norms for construction and fabrication, a true price of the impacts of the consumption of fossil or fissile energies, education at all levels on the reduction of our impact on the environment, scientific research that is reoriented towards really sustainable development, all of these while satisfying the essential energy needs of all the “tenants” of the planet.
Is it possible to arrive at a consensus on a plan to save the climate?
Answer: I would rather speak of indispensable compromises. The dramatic case of the inhabitants of the small island states is enough to indicate that a plan cannot be satisfying for everyone. That is obvious, it is in the nature of every human enterprise, of every political initiative. If the plan implies social regression for the whole of the developed world, it will not work.
I support the idea of avoiding social regression, I recognize the importance of social progress. But social progress for everyone, not only for the inhabitants of the developed countries.
I am not convinced that social regression would be an automatic result of measures of reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases. Let us note by the way that the Stern report doesn’t say anything different: it talks on the contrary about chances, economic opportunities. That can perhaps be contested, it is perhaps promising that people can have their cake and eat it too: I am not qualified to say.
In any case we have to take account of the fact that social regression can also be a result of climate change itself. This is even one of the big difficulties in working out the plan: there is a double unevenness, spatial and temporal, between the measures and their effects.
Temporal: given that climatic problems are caused by the accumulation in the atmosphere over decades of excessive quantities of C02, reducing emissions only very slowly affects the total that has accumulated; so to decide not to put into question today the advantages of which certain sectors of the population benefit could cause serious social regression in thirty or fifty years.
Spatial: the problem is all the more complicated because this social regression, in thirty years, will no doubt strike less hard those here whose advantages we will have decided not to put into question, whereas others, in Bangladesh or in Africa, for example, will bear the brunt of it.
Is the plan that you envisage conceivable without escaping from the mechanisms of the market?
Nicholas Stern, who is not the most radical of global justice economists, poses the following diagnosis: “climate change is the biggest and broadest market failure ever seen”. For me, who is not an economist, this diagnosis, if it is correct, would seem to indicate the difficulty of saving the climate while remaining in an “all market” system.
Venezuela is nationalizing its oil, Bolivia is nationalizing its gas, the trade unions in Quebec are demanding the nationalization of wind farms. Is collective ownership of energy resources not necessary for the working out of a plan?
The market is not the panacea, but is nationalization a solution? I did not know the case of Quebec that you evoke, I do not know the arguments that are put forward in this precise situation. But in a general fashion, I am not really sure that nationalization is the answer to the problem. EDF is a nationalized enterprise: is its strategy transparent, are its policies subject to democratic control?
Besides, I strongly doubt that nationalization leads to an improvement in terms of management. Are civil servants the most qualified to manage technical installations? We cannot deny the dynamism of the private sector on the level of investment and development.
Moreover, the balance sheet of the former USSR concerning ecology and management of resources is hardly encouraging... A debate is necessary about the conditions that have to be met so that management of resources responds to the interests of the collectivity, I agree. The objective must be that the populations should have their say.
Perhaps that involves nationalization in certain countries. But politics can also impose obligations of public service on private operators, so that certain guarantees are respected. The most important in my eyes is not to know who manages the resource, but to create the conditions for the way in which the resource is managed to give service to the widest public, while respecting the environment.

Son yüzyıllarda atmosferde biriken karbonik gazın büyük miktarı dikkate alındığında böyle bir küresel girişim olmadan mümkün bir çözüm görünmüyor.

Eğer herhangi bir plan bir grup uzman tarafından masaya konursa diğer uzmanlar bunu gerçek dışı olarak değerlendirecek ve halk da kabul edilemez olarak değerlendirecek ve planı uygulayacak olan kişiler karşı çıkacaklardır.

Cevap: Zaruri uzlaşmalardan konuşmayı tercih ederim. Küçük ada ülke sakinlerinin dramatik durumu, planın herkesi tatmin edemeyeceğini göstermek için yeterlidir. Bu açıktır, insan eliyle oluşturulmuş her teşebbüsün, her politik girişimin doğasında vardır bu. Eğer plan, gelişmiş dünyanın tümü için sosyal gerilemeyi ifade ediyorsa uygulanamaz.

Mekan açısından: Problem daha da karmaşıktır çünkü otuz yıl içindeki bu sosyal gerileme, avantajlarını meselenin dışında tutmaya karar verdiğimiz kişileri, örneğin Bangladeş veya Afrikadaki kişilerden şüphesiz daha az etkileyecektir ve asıl yükü sonuncular çekecektir.
Aklınızda canlandırdığınız plan, piyasa mekanizmalarından kaçınmadan düşünülebilir mi?

Halkların kendi görüşlerin dile getirebilmesi hedef olmalıdır.
Tabi ki bu bazı ülkelerdeki millileştirmeyi de kapsıyor. Fakat birtakım teminatların elde edilebilmesi için politikalar, özel işleticilere kamu hizmeti yükümlülüklerini yükleyebilir. Benim nazarımda en önemlisi, kaynakları kimin yönettiğinden ziyade, çevreye saygınlıkla beraber en geniş kitleye hizmet verecek şekilde kaynakların yönetilmesi için koşulların oluşturulmasıdır.
