Transaction costs and the international trade in textiles in medieval and early-modern Europe
Textiles, along with food and shelter, supply one of the most basic needs of mankind, from time immemorial. As clothing, they provide us with not just warmth but protection from the elements – from the cold, to be sure, but from also excessive heat and inclement weather. They also protect us from the shame of nakedness, since most societies prohibit (or restrict) public nudity and require a modest decorum in various forms of socially acceptable clothing. At the same time, such varieties in clothing (dress) are also means of indicating or asserting social status; and related concepts of clothing style and fashion have often served to be major elements in determining changes in market demand.
We can thus readily understand that textiles were produced almost everywhere, in medieval and early-modern Europe, including those known as ‘home-spun’ in so many peasant households. Yet relatively few regions succeeded, in terms of international competition, in producing and marketing the more fashionable and thus higher-valued textiles that thus also constituted the single most important manufactured commodity to enter both regional and international trade, from Roman times to the mid nineteenth century. The fact that most of these textiles were very durable and had a very highly favourable value to weight ratio also helps to explain their international commercial importance. That was all the more true, because transaction costs, including transport and all marketing costs, were generally more important competitive factors than production costs, for a wide range of textiles, until the eighteenth-century Industrial Revolution.
The undoubted importance of the value:weight ratio in international trade must not, however, mislead us into believing – as so many historians have done – that such trade was restricted just to those very high-priced luxury textiles serving chiefly aristocratic markets. For the range of textile values in medieval and early-modern international trade was often surprisingly wide, even if that range of traded textiles did fluctuate during this long era, especially with changes in transaction costs.
In the history of international trade, from the twelfth to eighteenth centuries, Italy was one of the three most important European regions in supplying such textiles, in a wide variety – along with the Low Countries (once including adjacent parts of northern France) and England. Italy’s eminence in textile production was based on its overwhelming predominance in medieval and early-modern Europe’s trade and finance. Indeed, the Italians – led by Venice, Florence, Genoa, and Milan in particular – had created the fundamental institutions of what historians now call the ‘Commercial Revolution’, a distinct era from the late tenth to early fourteenth centuries, with a commercial transformation and expansion that certainly proved to be the most powerful force in propelling the rapid growth of Europe’s economy and population – more than doubling the size of both – during this period, indeed in producing what Robert Lopez called ‘the birth of Europe’ . Yet Italy’s true eminence in the production of luxury textiles (in Tuscany and Lombardy) came only in the ensuing era of economic contraction and population decline, during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when, however, its predominance in international trade and finance became even stronger.
The medieval technology of wool textile production: woollens, worsteds, and serges
Before examining the macro-economic phenomena that helped bring about those commercial and industrial developments, with radical changes in Italian textile production, we must first understand the physical nature of the various textile products – in a spectrum or continuum running from relatively cheap to extremely costly fabrics – and the different technologies involved in their production.
By the term textile (from texere, to weave) we mean four different classes of woven fabrics, defined by their component fibres: cottons, linens, silks, and the most important category, woollens – or wool-based cloths. This categorical structure is, however, somewhat misleading for the medieval and early-modern eras, since it neglects the ways in which manufacturers could combine fibres and fabrics. This study, however, is largely confined to the wool-based textile industry.
That industry in turn has three major divisions: woollens, worsteds, and hybrid serges or ‘stuffs’. According to traditional textile historiography, true woollens were composed of very fine, short-fibred yarns, in both warp and weft. In medieval Europe, by far the finest of these short-fibred wools came from England: the very best from the Welsh Marches of Herefordshire and Shropshire; the next best, from the adjacent Cotswolds (Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire); and, as a distinct third, from the Lindsey, Kesteven, and Holland districts of Lincolnshire, in the north-east. Not before the sixteenth century would these English wools face any rivals for quality: and then only from the more fully evolved merino wools of Spain. These wools (medieval English and early modern merino) were heavily greased – with olive oil in Italy, and butter in the north – to protect their delicate fibres from damage in the ensuing production processes. For that reason a common French name for the woollen industry was draperie ointe. In medieval Italy (and generally elsewhere, on the continent) the wools required for the warp yarns, the stronger of the two, stretched between warp and cloth roller beams on the loom, were prepared by combing and spun on the ‘rock’ or drop spindle; those required for the weaker wefts (woven by insertion through groups of stretched warp yarns) were prepared by carding to be spun on the small spinning-wheel (introduced from Muslim Spain in the late twelfth century). Those yarns, when woven on the horizontal broad loom (introduced in the eleventh century), were too weak to produce a durable cloth, so that the woven fabric, taken down from the loom, then had to be subjected to a process known as fulling.
In traditional foot-fulling, the cloth (up to 30 metres long) was immersed in a long, shallow stone or earthenware vessel filled with warm water, urine, fuller’s earth (kaolonite), and soap. Two journeymen fullers then trod, with great force, on the woollen cloth for three days or more (depending on the quality and size) to achieve three objectives: to scour and cleanse the cloth of the oil; to force the short, curly and scaly wool fibre to interlace and interlock – in effect, to ‘felt’ the yarns; and to shrink the cloth, chiefly in its length, by about 50 percent of its surface area. The fulled and felted cloth then had a density and cohesion that made it virtually indestructible – and also very heavy. The cloth was then placed along a large structure known as a tentering frame, stretched on to the tenter-hooks, on all four sides. While the cloth was drying on this frame, all of the creases from the fulling processes were removed, and minor repairs were effected (by ‘burling’). The fulled and ‘tentered’ woollen cloth was then delivered to the finishers, who used thistle-like teasels ‘to raise the nap’, to bring up all of the loose fibres, which were then repeatedly shorn with foot-long razor-sharp shears. After the combined processes of fulling, napping, and shearing, the weave was totally obliterated and the consequent texture was almost as fine as silk. The cloth was then usually ‘dyed in the piece’, which generally meant redyeing, since preliminary dyeing often took place in either the wools, usually with woad, to produce a uniform blue base, or in the yarns, if a variety of colours was desired, in the form of rayed (striped) or ‘medley’ cloths.
From the tenth century, however, the fulling process in Italy became mechanized: with the water-powered fulling mill. Italy was indeed the first industrial region to adopt this significant innovation, which represented not just the initial but in fact the only significant process to be mechanized in the wool-based textile industries before the nineteenth century. Recent estimates indicate that, while traditional foot fulling account accounted for about 20 percent of the value-added manufacturing costs (before cloth finishing), mechanical fulling accounted for only 5 percent of such costs, thus representing a net cost savings of 75 percent. In some luxury-oriented woollen cloth industries in western Europe, mechanical fulling was resisted on the grounds that it injured the fine delicate wool fibres. Whether such considerations ever influenced production decisions in Florence’s late-medieval cloth industry, producing equally expensive woollens, is not known; but certainly mechanical fulling was employed in the Medici’s sixteenth-century Florentine workshops .
The other major products of the wool-based cloth manufacturing industries are known, at least to English historians, as worsteds, but to continental textile historians by the French terms: draperies légères or draperies sèches. One of the most common names for this type of textile was ‘say’ or saie (from the Roman Latin sagum: a wool-cloak); and the industries producing them (in many varieties) were known as sayetteries. As the first French terms suggest, they were comparatively light textiles – about one quarter to one third the weight of the fulled woollen broadcloth. They were composed of wools that were not greased or oiled, for they did not require the same protection as did the fine, short-stapled scaly-fibred wools used in manufacturing true woollens; and for that reason a common French name for this branch of the industry was draperie sèche. Instead, these fabrics were composed, in both their warp and weft yarns, of much longer-fibred, coarse, straight, and very strong wools, both of which were combed rather than carded. The yarns, spun by either the ‘rock’ or the ‘wheel’, were so strong and tightly twisted that manufacturing was virtually complete with the weaving process, except for bleaching or dyeing and pressing. Thus the classic true worsteds underwent no fulling, napping/teaselling, or shearing; and indeed their coarse, much straighter wool fibres lacked the felting properties required for these finishing processes. The distinguishing visible feature of these worsteds, therefore, was their highly visible weave, of various designs, chiefly twilled, designs that normally could not be seen in a true woollen. The absence of fulling (and thus lack of compression) largely explains their light weight; the combination of much lower-cost wools and far simplified production processes similarly explains their relative cheapness.
A third variety of wool-based textiles, commonly called serges, was simply a combination of these two basic types: a hybrid fabric composed of a long-stapled ‘dry’ combed worsted warp yarn and a shorter-stapled ‘greased’ carded woollen weft yarn. These textiles were only partially fulled, chiefly to remove the grease; and, like true worsteds, they were often neither napped nor shorn. Many textiles of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, especially those known as saga, sargia, stanfortes, were of this type, as were (evidently) the Hondschoote saies of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, which served as the model for the so-called New Draperies, which were introduced into East Anglia, from the 1560s, by Flemish refugees after the Revolt of the Netherlands against Spanish rule.
International trade in textiles in the Mediterranean basin: ca. 1100 - ca. 1320
Between the twelfth and early eighteenth centuries, when this survey ends, the Italian and other European cloth industries underwent some dramatic changes, both in terms of manufacturing and international trade. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, from the earliest records on cloth sales in the Mediterranean basin, we find that textiles from north-west Europe (northern France, the Low Countries, the Rhineland, England) predominated over those manufactured within the Mediterranean basin itself. Furthermore, the greater majority of the textiles sold in this region, by both value and volume, were of the much cheaper, lighter, worsted or semi-worsted ‘serge’ varieties. Patrick Chorley has shown that the sales value of northern says, biffes, burels, rayés, and similar cheaper, lighter cloths was ‘typically about 40-60 percent of that of the lowest grade of [Franco-Flemish] coloured woollens’; and in two Iberian price-lists, their values were only 25 - 33 percent of those for such woollens. Hidetoshi Hoshino found a similar range of prices for northern and Italian textiles in early fourteenth century Florence. Hilmar Krueger has confirmed these same patterns of Genoese trade in textiles with Sicily, Syria, Egypt, and Constantinople, during the later twelfth century. He found, in particular, that northern French and Flemish says and serges (sagie, sargie, saie) ‘were exported more frequently than other type of cloths’; and that northern cloths, including especially the cheaper, relatively light English stanfortes [stamforts], predominated over Mediterranean textiles. Of those textiles produced within Italy itself, he found that ‘only the Lombard fustians formed an impressive item of export’.
Italian textile production, ca. 1100 - ca. 1330: fustians, serges, coarse woollens
Indeed, as Maureen Mazzaoui has demonstrated, Italy’s most important textile-manufacturing industry during the twelfth, thirteenth, and early fourteenth century was undoubtedly that producing fustians: a hybrid textile composed of a linen (flax) warp yarn and a cotton weft yarn. The term is thought to be derived from al-Fustt, an important industrial suburb of Cairo, which had reputedly inaugurated the production of such textiles, in the tenth or eleventh centuries, by using local Egyptian flax for the linen warps and imported Syrian-Palestinian or South Asian cotton for the weft yarns. By the thirteenth century, the manufacture of these very light and comfortable textiles had spread through the Mediterranean basin and even into Flanders, in northwestern Europe; but clearly the undisputed leader in the European production of these linen-cotton fustians was Lombardy. Whether or not Mazzaoui was justified in describing this as a ‘mass-production, mass-consumption’ industry, there can be no doubt that its products were also relatively very cheap, as well as light, and very popular amongst the lower middle classes in this region during the later twelfth, thirteenth, and early fourteenth centuries.
During this same era, Italians were also manufacturing a very wide variety of other light and relatively cheap fabrics, in as great a profusion as was then to be found in northern France, the Low Countries, and England. In many towns in Lombardy, and also in Tuscany and Venetia, we find evidence for a wide variety of worsted or sem-worsted says, and very coarse woollens, variously woven from low-priced, mediocre Italian, North African, and other western Mediterranean wools, which were marketed under a variety of names: such as stametto, trafilato, tritana, taccolino, saia, saia cotonata. Also to be found is the manufacture of tiretaines, closely resembling fustians – in weight and market values – composed of mixtures of woollen, linen, and/or cotton fibres. During this era, the Umiliati of Florence, a lay brotherhood that had been founded in 1140 (reaching its peak in the 1270s) was famed for producing very cheap textiles for the poor and lower classes. According to Eleanora Carus-Wilson, who had examined a very detailed Venetian price-list of both imported and domestic textiles, dated 1265, ‘almost without exception the Italian cloths are cheap; even the costliest do not approach in value those of Ypres, Douai, and Cambrai’ [from Flanders] . Subsequently, for the early fourteenth century, Hidetoshi Hoshino’s analysis of the sales registers of the great Florentine merchant firms revealed a very similar picture: that these coarse and relatively cheap fabrics accounted for the vast majority of their sales textile transactions.
English wools, panni alla francesca, the Champagne Fairs, and the Arte di Calimala
Nevertheless, the significant role that so many prominent Italian mercantile firms – the Riccardi, Pulci, Frescobaldi Bianchi, Cerchi Bianci, Bardi firms in particular – played in purchasing high grade English wools for export, during the later thirteenth century, especially from Cistercian monasteries, would lead one to suspect that some such wools reached the textile manufacturing towns in Lombardy and Tuscany. England was then also the overwhelmingly predominant supplier of wool, exporting an annual average of 25,480 sacks in the 1290s, from which 110,414 broadcloths could have been woven.
A far more important import into later thirteenth-century Italy were undyed and undyed woollens that had been manufactured, from these same English wools, in the towns of the southern Low Countries and northern France – and known as panni alla francesca -- but acquired by Italian merchants trading at the Champagne Fairs, the commercial hub of western Europe, and transported down the Rhone Valley, and then, via Genoa, to Tuscany in particular. In Florence, merchants and industrial entrepreneurs in the Arte della Calimala prospered by dyeing and finishing these Franco-Flemish woollens and by having them re-exported to various Mediterranean markets, including those of the Islamic world. Particularly renowned were the extremely costly and ultra-luxurious scarlatto woollens, dyed a vivid scarlet with kermes (kermès in French; chermes in Italian; carmes in Spanish), extracted from the desiccated eggs of various Mediterranean shield lice.
Warfare, transaction costs, and transformations in international textile commerce: 1290s - 1330s
This structure of Italian textile production and textiles trade underwent dramatic and far-reaching changes from the onset of widespread, virtually continuous, and ever more disruptive warfare from the 1290s through to the 1330s, leading into the far better known era of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). Those wars began almost simultaneously in the eastern and western Mediterranean and in north-west Europe: with the Egyptian-based Mamlk conquest of the last Crusader outposts in Palestine (1291), the Genoese-Venetian wars to control the alternative trade by the Black Sea (1291-99), the Ottoman Turkish invasions of the Byzantine Empire in Anatolia and the Balkans (from 1303), the North African Merinid (or Marinid) invasions of Spain (1291-1340, with ancillary wars amongst Christian and Muslim states), the wars of the Sicilian Vespers (1282-1302), followed in Italy by the Guelf-Ghibelline wars in Italy (1313-43), which in turn invited foreign invasions (by Germans, Hungarians, Angevins, Catalans); and in the north-west, the Anglo-Scottish, Anglo-French and the Franco-Flemish wars, and civil wars, from 1296 to 1328.
Certainly by the 1320s, the combination of those wars had raised both the transportation and general transaction costs in long-distance international trade often to prohibitive levels for the commerce in relatively low valued textiles. The chief costs did not arise so much from destruction or even violence, but from the break down of authority, encouraging increased brigandage and piracy; from Church and state-imposed bans on trade with the enemy, especially with Mamlk Egypt, bans that were circumvented only by costly trade ‘licences’; from the construction of more heavily armed ships, especially with the new artillery; and from the various forms of war-financing, in taxes, requisitions, forced loans, and currency debasements. In particular, these wars were chiefly responsible for the rapid decline and fall of the Champagne Fairs, on which the north-south commerce in textiles had so fundamentally depended. The alternative route by the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean that the Italians developed from the 1320s was really not an effective substitute for transporting textiles, especially cheaper textiles, because such maritime trade, about five times longer by sea than by land, from Venice to Bruges, was so intermittent and so often threatened by piracy and naval wars.
The evidence for the harm that this warfare-induced rise in transportation and transaction costs had inflicted on the European textile trades can be seen in the virtual disappearance of those sayetteries and the related draperies légères (sèches) and similar industries in northern France, the southern Low Countries, and England, especially those that had specialized in producing relatively light and cheap worsted or semi-worsted fabrics for export to Mediterranean markets. Abundant evidence on textile sales in the Mediterranean basin, from the 1330s, also reveals the virtual disappearance of these cheaper, light northern textiles from Mediterranean markets, except for a few, occasional, random says, chiefly the so-called ‘Irish says’. England (East Anglia), to be sure, continued in producing worsteds for export to Germany and the Baltic, for several more decades, until they too virtually disappeared, by the 1380s, when similarly adverse conditions, especially a rise in piracy, and Polish-German warfare, increased transaction costs in Baltic commerce. The drastic decline in European population during the fourteenth century itself exacted a severe toll in rising transaction costs, because, the transactions sector in international trade, with very high fixed costs, is subject to significant scale economies, so that smaller, contracted markets meant far higher unit costs in trade.
The acutely severe problems facing the northern European textile producers, those for whom the Italians had been their chief commercial agents and customers, were two-fold. First, their transport and transactions costs were so much higher than those for the local Mediterranean producers of competing ‘cheap’ textiles. Second, because all these producers, northern and Mediterranean, had been manufacturing very similar products with very close substitutes, i.e., with a very elastic demand for their products, they had to act as ‘price-takers’ in Mediterranean markets. For they could not have increased prices to cover rising costs without losing all their customers to lower-cost and thus lower-priced competitors. Consequently, and evidently by the 1330s, most of the northern draperies in northwestern France (Artois, Normandy), the Low Countries, and England had chosen to re-orient most if not all of their export-oriented production to the manufacture of very high priced luxury woollen textiles.
Such a radical industrial and commercial transformation had two related objectives or justifications that better ensured the survival of cloth-manufacturing, commerce, and some prosperity in both north-west Europe, and then also in Italy, as well, albeit for a smaller number of producers and merchants. First, the value:weight ratios for these luxury cloths meant that they could far better sustain the steep rise in transport and transaction costs, which would have obviously constituted a smaller proportion of retail prices than those costs did for the saies, biffes, stanfortes, and other cheaper textiles. Second, and more important, such production involved a far higher degree of product differentiation – especially in those techniques designed to convince consumers of superior quality over competitors’ products. Thus these cloth-manufacturing towns, at least collectively in terms of the cloth guilds each town, rather than in terms of individual producers or ‘drapers’, became ‘price-makers’ engaged in monopolistic competition, creating a much more inelastic demand for their distinctively different woollens. That allowed them to raise prices, to some reasonable degree, to meet any rising costs, without necessarily losing so many customers– certainly not as many as did the cheaper line northern cloth producers.
This shift to luxury-cloth production, however, later exacted a heavy cost for many of the woollen-cloth industries – especially the more traditional and conservative draperies, in both the Low Countries and Italy, because the sine qua non for such luxury production was the exclusive use of the finer grade English wools. That grave and vital dependence soon put these luxury draperies at the mercy of English royal fiscal policy, i.e., in the taxation of wool exports, whose consequences will soon be revealed for the textile industries in both the Low Countries and Italy. Subsequently, from the early to mid-fifteenth century, some of the newer or younger cloth industries in the Low Countries and many in Italy did find a form of salvation by switching to the new Spanish merino wools; but they did not really rival the best English wools in quality until the sixteenth-century.
The transformations of Italian textile production from the 1320s: Lombardy and Tuscany
Indeed, this very same economic model, examined for the southern Low Countries, can be applied to the textile economies of later-medieval Italy, as we can witness in two clearly related economic transformations. First, we note the same virtual disappearance of many of those similar cheaper and lighter textile exports from Italy to various far-flung Mediterranean markets – and especially to the Islamic world. If the Lombard fustians industries were still faring the best during the early fourteenth century, they, too, began a slow if irredeemable decline from the 1320s, by which time, it should be noted, the populations of both Provence and Tuscany (and possibly also Lombardy) had already experienced a significant fall in population. Warfare, rather than disease, may have been the major cause of that demographic and economic decline, and no part of western Europe was more continuously ravaged by warfare than was Italy, well into the 1380s.
Certainly such warfare was the major factor responsible for the rise of the very competitors who would become the chief nemesis responsible for the final downfall of the Lombard fustian industry. For in the 1370s, after military strife in northern Italy had seriously disrupted the supply of fustians marketed in South Germany, the major towns of this region -- Ulm, Augsburg, Ravensburg, Constance, and Basel -- began converting their own domestic-oriented, low-quality linens crafts into the manufacture of linen-cotton fustians. Though beginning as a local ‘import-substitution’ industry, the South German fustian manufacturers subsequently expanded to become, by the mid fifteenth century, the most important supplier of these relatively inexpensive light textiles for European markets; and thus they represent the first important example of a cheaper-line textile industry that achieved a major growth in output in the later-medieval European economy.
The other major commercial-industrial transformation that had also become quite evident by the early fourteenth century, certainly by the 1320s, was the decline of the Florentine Arte di Calimala and, in almost a mirror image, the rise of the previously far less important guild of cloth manufacturers, the Arte della Lana, which had now begun to shift its production more and more to so-called panni alla francesca – i.e., fine woollens that imitated Franco-Flemish styles. Obviously the rapid rise of this ‘import-substitution’ industry took place at the direct expense of the Arte della Calimala, whose decline must be blamed essentially upon the virtual collapse of their commercial networks based on the now virtually extinct Champagne Fairs. Though one might instead attribute their plight more directly to the sharp rise in transportation and transactions costs involved in importing Franco-Flemish woollens, that argument becomes less convincing when we realize that the success of the Arte della Lana was dependent on another import from a far greater distance, namely English wools. We might assume, in terms of the economics of value:weight ratios, that it would be cheaper to transport semi-finished woollens than sacks of raw wool. Even though that wool was increasingly imported by sea, rather than overland, directly from Southampton via the ‘Straits of Marrock’ (Gibraltar), that maritime transport was very costly, adding 25 percent to the price paid for a sack of Cotswold wool landed by Venetian galleys. Galleys were far more expensive to operate than were cogs and the later carracks; but they were far safer to operate (with lower insurance rates) for the very valuable cargoes of English wool and Tuscan woollens.
Whatever the price that the cloth-producing lanaiuoli of the Arte della Lana paid for these English wools, from the 1330s, so successful were they in producing and marketing high-priced luxury quality woollens that they soon reduced, quite drastically by the later fourteenth century, the production of their once prominent cheaper-line textiles for their export markets (though retaining it for local markets): for much the same reasons as did the northern draperies. There is also no doubt that, while the Flemish and Brabantine draperies did maintain some success in marketing their similarly high-valued luxury woollens in the Mediterranean – in contrast to the desperate plight of the cheaper line semi worsted draperies, they did lose considerable ground to the Tuscan and Lombard woollen cloth industries, especially from the middle of the fourteenth century, so that these Low Countries’ draperies were forced to become ever more dependent on the Hanseatic markets in Germany, Poland, Russia, and Scandinavia, as did the Dutch and English woollen cloth industries. In Florence, by the late 1330s, according to Hoshino, the city’s now very fine woollens had become the most important exports for its great mercantile firms, evidently accounting for about 75 percent of their cloth sales abroad.
Hoshino contends, however, that the Florentine Arte della Lana did not really achieve its much more complete (if never fully complete) shift to luxury production, with even higher priced woollens, before the later fourteenth century, when Florentine woollens had clearly become by far the most expensive to be found in Mediterranean markets. In the Pisan market, during the years 1354 to 1371, the mean recorded price of Florentine woollens was 43.35 gold florins (fiorino d’oro) or £6.50 sterling; and the highest price were 115 florins or £17.25 sterling; by the 1390s, their mean price had risen to 55.9 florins (£8.38 sterling). By the later fourteenth century, Florentine woollens were also the single most important textiles that the Datini firm of Prato were selling in Catalonia, with an average value of 64.43 florins (£9.66 sterling), in total accounting for 27 percent of its sales revenues there. In the Syrian and Egyptian markets of this same era (c. 1390-1405), Florentine woollens were also the most expensive and amongst the most popular, selling at prices ranging from 35 to 54 florins (£5.25 to £8.10 sterling), compared to the sales prices for Flemish woollens: e.g., 38.5 florins (£5.78 sterling) for those from Mechelen and 19.2 florins (£2.84 sterling) for those from Wervik; but Florentine woollens were much longer than those produced in Flanders. In Poland, the most popular Italian woollens marketed during the 1390s were certainly again the Florentine. But the Italian woollens were then far less popular than Flemish and Brabantine broadcloths, and considerably less expensive than the very finest from the Low Countries. With a standardised dimension of 35 ells length (24.5 metres), the Florentine woollens sold for 32 florins (£4.81 sterling), while those from Bruges and Brussels sold for 43.75 florins (£6.56 sterling) and 46.67 florins (£7.00 sterling).
During the second half of the fourteenth century, other northern Italian towns had followed Florence’s example in producing very fine, luxury-quality woollens, if rather less expensive than the Florentine cloths. In Tuscany, apart from Florence as the undisputed leader, the other major cloth towns were Prato, Pisa, Lucca, Bologna, and Perugia. In Lombardy, by far the most important was Milan (reputedly with 363 drapery firms in the 1390s); but Como, Monza, Cremona, Parma, Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, Padua, Vicenza, Treviso, and Mantua were also important cloth-manufacturing towns. In the Pisan commercial accounts for 1354-71, Lombard woollens from Milan and Como, evidently of very high quality, had an average price of 27.55 florins (£4.13 sterling), while Tuscan cloths from Siena, Prato, and Pisa sold for a somewhat lower average price of 20.43 florins (£3.06 sterling). Both the Tuscan and Lombard woollens were, it must be noted, far more expensive than even the very best English broadcloths (except for the very few scarlets) exported during this era; and the Lombard cloths were priced higher than all but the very best woollens from the lesser ranking nouvelles draperies of fourteenth-century Flanders and Brabant. Despite their high sales prices, the Tuscan and Lombard woollens collectively accounted for over half (57 percent) of the Pisan cloth sales of this era. In the Datini accounts for cloth sales in Spain from 1394 to 1410, however, only a very few other Italian woollens competed with the overwhelmingly dominant Florentine woollens: just 86 cloths from Prato and Genoa, with a mean value of only 30.78 florins (£4.62 sterling), compared to the sales of 2,652 Florentine woollens, with a mean value of 64.43 florins (£9.67 sterling). All of these textiles sold in these markets would have cost a master mason or carpenter well more than a year’s annual money wage income.
In none of these late fourteenth-century accounts -- whether Spanish, Pisan, Sicilian, Byzantine, Syrian, Egyptian, or Polish -- do we find any evidence for the sale of those very cheap Florentine and Lombard woollen-worsteds and saia that had featured so prominently in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Mediterranean markets, though undoubtedly their production did continue for local Italian consumption.
The volume of Florentine cloth production and the wool supplies during the fourteenth century If we may be fairly certain about the relative values of textiles sold in Mediterranean markets during the fourteenth century, we are far less confident about the changing volumes of textile production. The most famous contemporary account, and one that in certain respects accords well with this thesis of radical industrial reorientation, is that presented by the Florentine chronicler Giovanni Villani (d. 1348). He contended that Florentine cloth production had fallen from about 100,000 pieces around 1310 to about 75,000 in the years 1336-38; and that the number of cloth-manufacturing firms had declined from 200 to 150 (supposedly employing 30,000 artisans). Villani’s estimate of the latter output’s value, at 1.2 million gold florins, and thus with a mean value of 16 gold florins per cloth, was nevertheless still much higher than the value for the much larger output of 1310, ‘when English wools were not imported’, because those earlier cloths ‘were coarser and worth only half as much’. Though Hoshino has disputed Villani’s figures, believing that the city’s cloth output was much lower in the 1330s, nevertheless there can be little doubt that Florentine cloth production experienced a very dramatic drop by the later fourteenth century.
There are at least three reasons to explain why such a decline had been virtually inevitable. First and foremost was the precipitous drop in Florence’s population: from an estimated 90,000 in 1338 to just 40,000 in 1427 (as measured by that year’s Catasto or tax census): a severe drop of 56 percent. Cloth production remained a very labour intensive industry, without any significant technological innovations that could have compensated for what must have been a drastic reduction in the available labour supply. Similarly, a disastrous decline in Western Europe’s population in general – perhaps 40 percent by the late fourteenth century – and disruptions of traditional trade routes and markets obviously meant a serious decline in aggregate cloth sales, though to be sure a decline that, for Florence and other major Italian cloth producers, was offset to the extent that they succeeded in displacing Flemish, Brabantine, and northern French woollens in Mediterranean markets.
The second reason to explain that decline, in both cloth production and market sales, is the already observed rise in the gold-florin values of Florentine and other Italian woollen cloths. If we accept Villani’s estimate of the mean value for the late 1330s (16 florins), that value had well more than doubled by the 1390s, in real terms. If we also accept the standard law of demand – that demand varies inversely with the price – aggregate sales may have fallen substantially, though not proportionately, if demand had become less elastic at the higher prices (in accordance with the economics of ‘price-making’ monopolistic competition). Indeed, to the extent that western Europe experienced a more highly skewed distribution of wealth and income in the second half of the fourteenth century, as several historians have contended, then such changes may have helped sustain sales of these luxury woollens; and that may also help explain the general reorientation of West European textile production towards very high value fabrics. That also includes, of course, the rise and expansion of the late-medieval Italian silk industry.
The third and related factor to be considered in understanding the steep decline in Florentine cloth production during the later fourteenth century also helps to explain why Florentine and other Italian cloths woven from fine English wools became so expensive: namely, the English crown’s taxation of wool exports. Wool, in providing England’s overwhelmingly predominant and most lucrative export, and one so well organised, was the most obvious and by far the most important object of that fiscal policy. When export taxes commenced in 1275, under King Edward I, they were quite modest: 6s 8d sterling per sack, just 4.91 percent of the average value exported. But when his grandson Edward III commenced the Hundred Years’ War in 1337, he sought to finance his conquest of France with sharp increases in wool export duties: rising from 26s 8d per sack for denizen exports and 30s 0d per sack for alien (i.e., Italian) exports in 1337 to 50s 0d per sack for denizens and 53s 4d per sack for aliens in 1370. In 1399, the alien duty was raised again to 60s 0d (£3 sterling) per sack.
Because these duties were fixed rather than ad valorem, the real tax burden rose with the general deflation, and fall in nominal wool prices, of the late fourteenth century. As a consequence, by 1400, the denizen export tax amounted to 49.25 percent of the mean value of exported wools, while the alien export tax burden was obviously higher, at 59.10 percent of that mean value. The impact of that tax burden can be seen in the documentary evidence, from the 1430s, that English (Calais) Staple wools accounted for 65 to 70 percent of the pre-finishing production costs in the luxury woollen draperies of the southern Low Countries. In view of the higher wool-export taxes and the much higher transportation costs involved in shipping English wools to Italy, such wools undoubtedly then accounted for an even higher proportion of production costs and very high sales prices in the Italian cloth industries.
Certainly that rising tax burden contributed to the very sharp decline in aggregate wool exports, all the more so with the establishment of the Calais Wool Staple in 1363, by which the crown created a woolsellers’ cartel that was designed to pass the tax incidence more fully on to the foreign buyers (rather than on to the English woolgrowers, in the form of lower prices). From the decade 1361-70 to 1401-10, total English wool exports fell from an annual mean of 28,290.50 sacks to one of just 13,936.20 sacks – a fall of 51 percent, one greater than any estimate of the aggregate European population decline in this era. Because of the growing differential between denizen and alien export taxes, the decline in alien (Italian) wool exports was even more precipitous: from an annual mean of 9,667.73 sacks in 1361-70 to one of just 1,338.10 sacks in 1401-10. That can be expressed more dramatically by calculating that the Italian share of English wool exports fell from 34.17 percent of the total in 1361-70 to just 9.60 percent in 1401-10. Consequently, unless the Florentine Arte della Lana had succeeded in finding a suitable substitute form of wool for weaving its luxury-quality woollens, its export-oriented, luxury-cloth production must have declined very substantially (though the production from domestic wools for local markets possibly did not decline as much).
The extent of that decline may now be much better estimated. By 1373, according to most historians, the output of the Florentine cloth industry was about 30,000 woollens of standard measure. When the Ciompi staged their revolt in 1378, they had demanded a guaranteed annual production of 24,000 cloths; and we may safely deduce that the annual production was less than that figure. According to both Davidsohn and Hoshino, Florence’s annual cloth production had fallen to about 19,000 woollens in 1382, when the ‘counter-revolution’ against the Ciompi took place.
Florentine cloth production in the fifteenth Century: the San Martino and Garbo branches
According to Hoshino, the decline in production had become even more precipitous by the years 1425-30, when the annual output, in his view, oscillated between 11,000 and 12,000 woollens. More recently Franceschi, supported by Chorley, has argued for an even lower figure: of about 9,000 - 10,000 pieces. By this time, the Florentine woollen cloth industry had come to be divided into two sectors. The first was the older: the San Martino branch, which continued to manufacture very costly, ultra-luxury quality woollens exclusively from the very finest English wools– a requirement reiterated in an ordinance of the Arte della Lana of 1408. The other was known as the Garbo branch, which produced medium or lower quality woollens, and much lower priced, essentially because the wools that they contained were so much cheaper.
According to Ordinances of the L’Arte della Lana issued in 1428 and 1430, the so-called Garbo wools consisted of some domestic Italian wools, the so-called lana matricina, wools from Majorca, Minorca, and Provence, and, as the most recent, the San Matteo or Spanish merino. Contrary to some misconceptions in the literature, Spanish merino wools were not used in Italy until the very late fourteenth century. Indeed, current evidence indicates that merino wools were the relatively recent product of cross-breeds of domestic Castilian sheep with imported rams from Merinid realms of North Africa, whose introduction probably occurred soon after, but not before, the Spanish victory over the Merinids at the Battle of Rio Salado, in 1340, which ended forever the threat of Muslim reconquest. Since the pre-merino Spanish wools had been regarded as amongst the very worst in Europe, so that their use was forbidden even in the cheaper-line cloth industries, and since North African wools were then mediocre in quality, their evolution to become, by the late sixteenth, early seventeenth century the finest wools in the world – a primacy in quality they retain to this very day – remains a mystery. Possibly it may be explained by the genetic union of two recessive genes from the two breeds. That evolution was also dependent on devising the proper techniques of cross-breeding and also of sheep grazing and management.
Inferior though the early, merino wools may have been, even decades after slow improvements in Castilian flock management, some Italian cloth industries were experimenting in using them by the later 1370s (Milan being the first, in 1375), 1380s, and early 1390s (about thirty years before their acceptance in the southern Low Countries), generally under the name of lane di San Mateo. In the various cloth industries of Milan, Florence, Verona, Prato, and Genoa, they generally ranked a poor fourth or fifth in value, after (in this order) English, Minorcan, Majorcan, and French (Provençal) wools. These Spanish wools cost, at most, only 30 to 40 percent as much as the English Cotswolds wools used in these Italian draperies. Clearly these merino wools could not yet be expected to rescue the fortunes of the later-medieval Florentine or other Italian luxury woollen cloth industries, which still required the finest English wools; but certainly Spanish wools gained an increasing role in the production of the much cheaper Garbo woollens.
Hoshino’s archival research for the period 1454-1480, however, indicates that their role was then overshadowed by the domestic Italian wools: for the matricina wools, chiefly from the Abruzzi region (L’Aquila, Narni, Orvieto, Perugia, Terni e Viterbo) accounted for 71.8 percent of the wool purchases of ‘numerous firms of the Florentine lanaiuoli’ producing panni di Garbo, while Spanish wools came a distant second, accounting for 13.9 percent of wool purchases, and Provençal wools, third, with 12.3 percent of purchases. His list of wool prices for 1454-1500 does indicate that those for lana matricina were generally, but not always, higher than those for lana spagnola (but far lower than those for lana francesca). According to Goldthwaite, these lana matricina ‘cost one-third to one-half less than English wool’, in the mid fifteenth century. But Hoshino also indicates that from the 1490s there was a marked increase in il commercio diretto della lana castigliana, i.e, with the now direct participation of Spanish merchants. Certainly during the sixteenth century, the now considerably improved and thus more valuable merino wools came to play a much larger role in the Florentine woollen cloth industry; and they were by far the most important wools that the Medici firm used in the mid-century.
For the mid-fifteenth century Florentine cloth industry, we should also inquire about the markets that the Florentine lanaiuoli were primarily serving: were they local markets, and for the lower income strata of Tuscan towns; or were they foreign markets (and especially Levantine)? As stated earlier, cloth-manufacturing was a virtually ubiquitous industry across late-medieval western Europe. Most of that production, everywhere, was to supply the needs of local, domestic markets, and for the lower-income strata. Thus, such cloths were generally always produced from cheaper, local wools.
According to both Hoshino and Chorley, the partial revival of the Florentine woollen cloth industry, from the mid fifteenth century, was largely based on two factors: its success in gaining access to Levantine and especially Ottoman Turkish textile markets; and especially the success of its cheaper-line panni de Levante manufactured from Garbo wools, which Chorley indicates (or assumes) were largely Spanish. In the 1470s, according to Chorley, Florentine cloth exports to the Levant and the Ottoman Empire amounted to 7,000 - 8,000 pieces a year. From Venetian reports dated 1488, Hoshino has estimated that Florentine cloth production was now about 17,000 pieces a year – a significant recovery – about two thirds of which were made from Garbo wools (panni di Garbo). Chorley contends in particular that Florentine cloth exports to the Levant was to a large extent based on an exchange trade: ‘the import of raw Iranian [Persian] silk for the growing Florentine silk industry, which also had significant exports to the Levant’.
Macro-economic factors and falling transaction costs: expansion and change in the international textile trades from the 1460s
We should also consider the role of demographic and other macro-economic factors in both the recovery and expansion of Florentine cloth production, but especially the increasing share of that production in the relatively cheaper panni di Garbo. In the first place, the recovery in Italy’s population, and then that of the Mediterranean basin, which occurred much earlier and more rapidly than in northwestern Europe (where demographic recovery did not begin until the 1520s), expanded both the size of consumer markets and the potential labour force within the Italian textile industries. By the 1520s, the population of Florence had recovered to about 80,000 (i.e., about double that of 1427).
Second, accompanying and undoubtedly stimulating that combined economic and demographic recovery was the South-German-Central European silver-copper mining boom, which, from the 1460s to the 1530s, quintupled the European production of silver, and not only brought to an end the severe deflation of the mid-fifteenth century but also provided the origins of the Price Revolution from about 1515 (with other financial developments, discussed below): a sustained inflation, lasting until the 1640s, that provided a strong stimulus to economic expansion, especially in reducing the real costs of labour and borrowed capital. Much of that newly mined South German silver and copper allowed Venice in particular greatly to expand its commerce with the Levant, bringing back larger quantities of Syrian and Cypriot cotton to furnish the now rapidly expanding fustians industry of South Germany.
The related development, of even greater importance, was the revival of long-distance overland or continental trade routes, now chiefly running from Venice through South Germany to the Frankfurt Fairs, and then along the Rhine to the new Brabant Fairs, whose expansion helped to make Antwerp the commercial and financial capital of northern Europe, from the 1460s to 1560s. As Van der Wee and others have amply demonstrated, these overland, continental trade routes (less than twenty percent of the distance by sea) had a far greater economic stimulus in expanding international trade than did the late-medieval maritime routes: in increasing capital investment, production, employment, and aggregate regional incomes, by a combined multiplier-accelerator effect, affecting a vastly greater geographic areas and hundreds of more towns. That overland continental trade, furthermore, led to the revival of the large-scale international fairs, as a very major force in the expansion of European international trade, though with locations entirely different from those of the thirteenth century: not only in the new fairs of Frankfurt and Brabant (Antwerp and Bergen-op-Zoom) but also in Bescançon, Geneva, and Lyons.
In more general macro-economic terms, these combined demographic-economic forces for expansion, greatly aided by a relative diminution in warfare, with the end of the Hundred Years’ War in particular (1453), fully reversed the contractionary forces of the fourteenth-century, indeed to restore the far more propitious and expansionary economic forces of the thirteenth-century ‘Commercial Revolution’ era. In so doing, they also produced a very significant reduction in transaction costs in international trade – all the more so when we realize how dependent cost reductions in the transaction sector were based on enlarged scale economies, i.e, with much larger, more concentrated, and more efficient urban markets.
Those cost reductions were aided by significant technological advances in transportation and communications. In maritime commerce, by far the most important was the development, from the 1450s, of the fully-rigged, three-masted, and heavily-armed ‘Atlantic’ ships (with combined square and lateen sails), especially the carracks and galleons, which, according to Frederic Lane led to a 25 percent reduction in shipping costs, including implicit insurance costs, with much greater safety, by the early sixteenth century. These ships allowed Europeans to dominate the world’s shipping lanes four the next four centuries. Equally important were innovations in overland, continental trade: especially, the establishment of professional, specialized cartage firms, which used the new, larger-scale, lower-cost Hesse wagons (carts), in well organized convoys. These firms offered merchants fully insured passage for their goods at predetermined, fixed rates, with reliable travel schedules; and they also provided an efficient overland postal service. They soon made the continental overland routes both speedier and more reliable than Atlantic shipping routes from north-west Europe into the Mediterranean. To these may be added the subsequent ‘financial revolution’ in the development of fully negotiable credit instruments, in both private and public finance (rentes), and financial exchanges, from the 1520s, which contributed to a fifty-percent reduction in real interest rates by the mid-sixteenth century.
Just as the late-medieval forces for economic contraction and disruption, in raising transaction costs, had so seriously hindered long-distance trade in the cheaper line textiles, so the reversal of these forces and the significant reduction in transaction costs promoted a renewed emphasis and greater relative importance of long-distance trade in those cheaper-line textiles: such as the panni di Garbo and South German fustians, already mentioned. In the Low Countries those structural changes brought about the revival and significant expansion of the Hondschoote-style sayetteries and other draperies légères, which, by the early sixteenth century, had displaced the traditional woollen draperies to become decisively the leading textile industry of the southern Low Countries. Most of these were, like the thirteenth-century Hondschoote says (saies, saaien), a semi-worsted serge: with a long-stapled worsted (combed) dry warp and a short-stapled (carded) greased weft. They were far lighter and far cheaper than traditional woollen broadcloths (as noted earlier), though not as cheap and light as pure worsteds. As was the case in the thirteenth century, so the major market for the product of Low Countries’ sayetteries proved to be Italy, the Mediterranean basin in general, and then the Spanish colonies in the Americas.
As Hoshino notes, the Arte della Lana attempted, with varying degrees of success, to re-introduce the production of similar lighter-weight semi-worsted fabrics in the second half of the fifteenth century: panni perignani (‘leggera stoffa di lana’, using Spanish wools for the weft); saie a uccellini; and, ultimately, the most important, panni di rascia – or ‘rascie’ – known as ‘rashes’ in English, introduced by an ordinance of February 1488, a serge cloth that also used Spanish wools for its carded wefts. But, as Chorley has recently revealed its greatest importance, came in the sixteenth century, especially between the years from c. 1520 to c. 1570. They came to enjoy an important prominence on Antwerp market by the mid-sixteenth century, when both the ‘large’ (broad) and ‘narrow’ were amongst the most valuable cloths sold there.
Such developments in the early-modern Florentine cloth industry do not mean, however, that the ultra-luxury San Martino woollens, still woven from those very fine English wools, had lost their importance from the mid-fifteenth century. Though far fewer were now being exported to the Levant, they continued to enjoy a far strong prominence in Italian and especially Papal markets. Thus, of the woollens imported into in Rome in the years 1451-76, the Florentine cloths accounted for 13,528 or virtually half (49.72 percent) of the total 27,210 cloths sold there; and of these Florentine woollens, 5,354 (39.58 percent) were the extremely costly ‘grain’ or kermes-dyed scarlets (panni di grana). In contrast, only 821 English broadcloths and 805 Flemish woollens were then sold in Rome.
The (temporary) decline of Florentine cloth production and the rise of Venetian cloth production in the sixteenth century
Regrettably, Hoshino’s famous study of the Florentine industry does not extend beyond the 1490s; but subsequently Paolo Malinama did provide a useful survey of the Florentine cloth industry’s changing fortunes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. More recently, however, Patrick Chorley has recently demonstrated that this industry reached its apogee in the late 1520s, with an output of about 20,000 pieces of woollen cloth, perhaps double that of a century earlier: about 25 percent (4,000 to 5,000 woollens) produced by the San Martino branch, but accounting for about half of the industry’s revenue, estimated at 600,000 florins; and the rest, therefore, by the Garbo branch of the Florentine industry. To explain the sudden decline of the traditional Florentine woollen industries from ca. 1530, Chorley cites two major factors. The first, and most important, was the loss of its dominance in the Levantine markets, beginning with a ‘disruption in the trade in Iranian [raw] silk’ from an embargo that the Ottoman Sultan Selim I had imposed in the years 1514-20, leading to a shift in the silk transit trade from Bursa (Constantinople) to Aleppo, where the Florentines ‘had no established presence’, but where the Venetians certainly did. For some Florentine firms the Turkish share of their exports fell from a high of 42 percent, in 1518-32, to 13 percent in 1544. The second was Florence’s own internal crisis of the years 1526-30, when bubonic plague killed perhaps a quarter of the population; and at almost the same time, the Spanish-German sack of Rome in 1527, threatening the expulsion of the Medici Pope Clement VII, led to a revolution against Medici rule in Florence, which was finally and brutally crushed by Papal forces in August 1530.
By far the most dramatic development in the history of the Italian textile industries in the sixteenth century was Venice’s rapid and almost total displacement of Florence as a producer and exporter of fine, heavy-weight woollen broadcloths in the Levant – and more generally in the Ottoman Empire, which, of course included most of the Balkans, as well as Asia Minor, and then all of the Mamlk domains, from the Ottoman conquests of 1516-17. Thanks to the researches of several Italian scholars, Pierre [Piero] Sardella, Domenico Sella, and Walter Panciera, we now possess a remarkable annual series of Venetian woollen cloth production statistics from 1516 to 1723, just over 200 years. The Venetian story is all the more remarkable because, prior to the very late fifteenth century, Venice had never maintained a cloth industry of any international importance. From the earliest recorded output, in 1516, to the first peak, in 1569, production grew from a mere 1,310 pieces to 26,541 pieces.
In Sella’s view, the primary reason for the initial rise of the Venetian woollen cloth industry, and for its ability to displace the Florentine industry so decisively, was warfare: the French and Habsburg invasions, from 1494 to 1559 (Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis), which ravaged Lombardy and Tuscany, but left Venice, in his view, with its supposedly protected location and extensive military power, relatively untouched. Unfortunately, however, that view is not consistent with the facts of Italy’s military history in this period. For, in December 1508, Venice faced the newly formed League of Cambrai, a seemingly invincible coalition of very hostile and very formidable enemies who together posed the greatest threat to Venice’s existence since the War of Chioggia (with Genoa, 1378-81): the Holy Roman Emperor (Maximilian), France (Louis XII), the Papacy (Pope Julius II), and the King of Hungary. Their objective was to recapture Venice’s recent Italian acquisitions, outside her traditional her traditional ‘Venetia’ jurisdiction. In May 1509, at the Battle of Agnadello (on the Adda), the French- led army utterly defeated the Venetians, who were forced to abandon the entire mainland. Although this coalition soon dissolved, rent by conflicting rivalries, Venice – now stripped of her papal territories – found herself again at war with the French, who again defeated the Venetians, at the Battle of Marignano, in September 1513. But, fortunately Venice was spared further losses by the Concordat of Bologna in 1516; and indeed, Venice regained Padua, and some other mainland territories. These often disastrous wars may explain why the very first recorded output, in that same year – just 1,310 pieces in 1516 – was so very small.
Instead, the far more convincing explanation for Venice’s subsequent and ultimate victory in gaining the Ottoman cloth markets lies in the two major difficulties revealed in Chorley’s analysis, recounted above: those that the Florentine cloth trade were encountering in the Ottoman Empire, from about 1514, and then those that Florence experienced in its severe domestic crisis in the years 1526 to 1530. Furthermore, it is important to note that Florentine cloth production had achieved its apogee, in the mid-1520s – thus some thirty years after Charles VIII’s French invasion of Italy (in 1494).
To be sure, the Venetians proved to be less successful in exploiting commercial opportunities in the now vast Ottoman Empire than they had been in their diplomatic and commercial relations with the former Mamlk Sultanate (the Levant), which had fallen to the Ottomans in 1517. Even before then, they had found themselves at war with the Turks, far too often: especially in the years 1463-79, and 1499-1503, when the Venetians had suffered a crucial naval defeat at the Battle of Zoncio. During that latter period, the Portuguese had established their direct sea route, via southern Africa (the Cape), to the Indies, thereby threatening Venice with the loss of her vital spice trade. Nevertheless, in the Ottoman peace treaty of 1503, the Venetians recognized that their only hope of regaining that spice trade lay in co-operating with the Ottomans, who – in a triple Muslim alliance with Gujerat in India and Aceh (Atjeh) in Sumatra -- succeeded in breaking the Portuguese hold over the Indian ocean trades, including the spice trade. Thus, by the 1540s, the Venetians had managed to regain a significant share of the lucrative East Indies spice trade – perhaps as much as half by the 1550s – allowing them, with their new cloth export trade to the Ottoman Empire, to enjoy an Indian Summer of renewed prosperity to the late sixteenth century.
Indeed, the Venetian cloth industry’s mean annual production had not exceeded 10,000 pieces until 1546-50; and thus the much more rapid growth of output to the quinquennium 1566-70, when cloth production reached a temporary peak of 18,513 pieces, may have been related to Venice’s ability to restore at least part of its former spice trade, via Ottoman ports: i.e., in effect exchanging woollens for at least some spices. But in the year 1570, production had slumped to just 9,462 pieces, a sharp drop undoubtedly related to the Ottoman seizure of Cyprus. Thereafter, cloth production did recover, at a much slower rate of annual growth, with a series of often severe oscillations. That diminished growth rate may in turn reflect the revival of Lombard and Tuscan cloth production, after the 1559 Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis; for, we do know that Florence, also selling woollens in Levantine markets, had more than doubled its production after 1558: from 16,000 pieces to about 33,000 pieces in 1561. Venetian cloth production itself reached its ultimate peak, of 28,728 pieces, in 1602 – or with a quinquennial mean production of 23,573 pieces in 1601-05, and thus 27.3 percent higher than the earlier sixteenth century peak.
From evidence on Venetian cloth widths these appear to be genuine heavy-weight woollen broadcloths: 1.80 metres compared to 1.60 metres for the English. Such woollens had been, from some time much earlier in the sixteenth century, manufactured chiefly from Spanish merino wools (i.e., substituted for the finer English wools). I costi di transazione e i commerci internazionali dei tessuti in Europa dal Medioevo alla prima età moderna
Da sempre, i tessuti, insieme al cibo e a un luogo dove ripararsi, hanno costituito una delle esigenze fondamentali dell’uomo. Gli indumenti non solo ci riscaldano, ma ci proteggono dagli elementi – certamente dal freddo, ma anche dal caldo eccessivo e dalle condizioni atmosferiche inclementi. Sono anche la protezione necessaria al senso del pudore, poiché quasi tutte le società proibiscono (o limitano) la nudità in luoghi pubblici ed esigono un senso del decoro che prevede varie forme di indumenti convenienti dal punto di vista sociale. Al contempo, una tale varietà di indumenti (abiti) ha anche il significato di indicazione o asserzione di condizione sociale, e i concetti correlati di stile di abbigliamento e di moda spesso sono stati elementi fondamentali che hanno determinato mutamenti nella domanda del mercato.
Possiamo perciò facilmente comprendere che i tessuti sono stati prodotti quasi ovunque in Europa, nel Medioevo e nella prima età moderna, compresi quelli chiamati ‘home-spun’ (tessuti in casa) in così numerose abitazioni contadine. Relativamente poche regioni, tuttavia, hanno avuto successo in termini di concorrenza internazionale, di produzione e di commercializzazione di tessuti alla moda e quindi più preziosi, che quindi costituivano anche prodotto base più importante a entrare nei commerci regionali e internazionali, dall’antica Roma alla metà del XIX secolo. Anche il fatto che questi tessuti avessero una durata notevole e un interessante rapporto valore-peso contribuisce a spiegare la loro importanza nell’ambito dei commerci internazionali. In particolare ciò si rivelò vero poiché i costi di transazione, compresi i costi di trasporto e di commercializzazione, erano in generale fattori concorrenziali più importanti rispetto ai costi di produzione, per un’ampia gamma di tessuti, fino alla Rivoluzione industriale del XVIII secolo.
L’indubbia importanza del rapporto valore-peso nel commercio internazionale non deve, comunque, indurci a credere – come hanno fatto molti storici – che tali commerci fossero limitati solo a tessuti di lusso molto costosi che servivano principalmente i mercati aristocratici. Infatti, la gamma di prezzi dei tessuti nei commerci internazionali nel Medioevo e nella prima età moderna era spesso sorprendentemente ampia, anche se quella gamma di tessuti oggetto di scambio commerciale fu soggetta a fluttuazioni sul lungo periodo, soprattutto legate ai cambiamenti dei costi delle transazioni.
Nella storia del commercio internazionale, dal XII al XVIII secolo, l’Italia fu una delle tre regioni europee più importanti nell’offerta dei tessuti, in una gamma molto ampia – insieme ai Paesi Bassi (che un tempo comprendevano alcune aree adiacenti del Nord della Francia) e all’Inghilterra. L’eccellenza dell’Italia nella produzione tessile era dovuta alla sua predominanza schiacciante sui commerci e sulla finanza europea nel Medioevo e nella prima età moderna. In effetti, gli italiani – in particolare le città di Venezia, Firenze, Genova e Milano – avevano creato le istituzioni fondamentali di quella che oggi gli storici chiamano la ‘Rivoluzione commerciale’, un’epoca distinta dalla fine del X agli inizi del XIV secolo, con una trasformazione e un’espansione dei commerci che sicuramente si rivelò la più potente forza di propulsione per la rapida crescita dell’economia e della popolazione dell’Europa – entrambe più che raddoppiate – durante questo periodo, e produsse quella che Robert Lopez chiamò «la nascita dell’Europa» . Tuttavia, la vera eccellenza dell’Italia nella produzione di tessuti di lusso (in Toscana e Lombardia) si verificò solamente nel periodo seguente di contrazione economica e di declino demografico, nel corso del XIV e XV secolo, quando, però, la sua predominanza nei commerci e nella finanza internazionale divenne anche più forte.
La tecnologia medievale della produzione di tessuti in lana: panni di lana, tessuti di lana pettinata, e serge (saie)
Prima di esaminare i fenomeni macro-economici che contribuirono a questi sviluppi industriali e commerciali, con cambiamenti radicali nella produzione tessile italiana, dobbiamo capire la natura fisica dei vari prodotti tessili – in un ventaglio o continuum che andava da stoffe relativamente economiche a estremamente costose – e le diverse tecnologie impiegate nella loro produzione.
Con il termine ‘tessuto’ (da texere, tessere) si indicano quattro diverse classi di prodotti tessili, definite dalle fibre di cui sono composte: cotoni, lini, sete e, la categoria più importante, lane – o stoffe a base di lana. Questa divisione in categorie, però, è in un certo senso fuorviante se riferita all’epoca medievale e agli inizi dell’era moderna, poiché non tiene conto delle combinazioni di fibre e tessuti. Questo studio, tuttavia, si limita prevalentemente all’industria tessile laniera.
Questa industria, a sua volta, si divide in tre settori principali: le pezze di lana, i tessuti di lana pettinata, e i serge ibridi o ‘stoffe’. Secondo la storiografia tessile tradizionale, i veri panni in lana erano costituiti da filati molto fini e a fibra corta, per la trama come per l’ordito. Nell’Europa medievale, le lane a fibra corta di gran lunga più fini provenivano dall’Inghilterra: le migliori in assoluto dalle Marches gallesi dell’Herefordshire e dello Shropshire; a seguire figuravano le lane dell’adiacente regione del Cotswolds (Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Oxfordshire e Berkshire), e al terzo posto, ma con un distacco notevole, dai distretti di Lindsey, Kesteven e Holland del Lincolnshire, nel nord-est. E queste lane inglesi non furono uguagliate in qualità prima del XVI secolo, e a quel tempo solo dalle lane spagnole merino più elaborate. Queste lane (le lane inglesi medievali e le lane merino nei primi anni dell’età moderna) venivano molto ingrassate – con olio d’oliva in Italia e con burro nel nord – per proteggere le loro fibre delicate da eventuali danni nei processi di produzione che sarebbero seguiti. Per questo motivo un nome diffuso in Francia per indicare l’industria dei panni in lana era draperie ointe. Nell’Italia medievale (e più in generale sul continente) le lane richieste per i filati di ordito, i più robusti dei due, tesi sul telaio tra i subbi dell’ordito e i subbi del tessuto, erano preparate con la pettinatura e la filatura con rocca e fuso, mentre le lane richieste per i più deboli filati di trama (tessuti tramite inserimento attraverso gruppi di filati di ordito tesi) erano preparate con la cardatura per essere filate sul piccolo filatoio (introdotto dalla Spagna musulmana alla fine del XII secolo). Quei filati, quando venivano tessuti sull’ampio telaio orizzontale (introdotto nell’XI secolo), erano troppo deboli per produrre una stoffa durevole, perciò quel tessuto, una volta tirato giù dal telaio, doveva poi essere sottoposto a un procedimento chiamato follatura.
Nella tradizionale follatura a piede, la stoffa (lunga fino a 30 metri) veniva immersa in un lungo recipiente poco profondo, di pietra o terracotta, pieno di acqua tiepida, urina, terra per follare (caolinite) e sapone. Due operai qualificati per la follatura calpestavano poi, con molta forza, la stoffa di lana per tre giorni o anche più (a seconda della qualità e delle dimensioni) per raggiungere tre obiettivi: per sgrassare e ripulire la stoffa dall’olio; per costringere la corta, ricciuta e squamosa fibra di lana a intrecciarsi e unirsi – in realtà, per ‘feltrare’ i filati; e per restringere la stoffa, soprattutto in lunghezza, del 50 % circa della sua superficie. La stoffa follata e feltrata acquistava così una densità e una coesione che la rendevano praticamente indistruttibile – e anche molto pesante. La stoffa veniva quindi posta lungo un’ampia struttura chiamata telaio distenditore, tesa sui ganci dello stenditoio, su tutti i quattro lati. Mentre la stoffa si asciugava su questo telaio, si eliminavano tutte le pieghe derivate dal procedimento di follatura e venivano effettuate piccole riparazioni (tramite ‘slappolatura’). Le stoffe in lana follate e ‘distese’ venivano quindi consegnate ai rifinitori, che usavano garzatrici simili ai cardi ‘per garzare la felpa’, per sollevare tutte le fibre staccate, che venivano più volte pareggiate con cesoie affilate come rasoi e lunghe un piede (30,48 cm). Dopo le procedure combinate di follatura, felpatura e cimatura, l’armatura era totalmente cancellata e la conseguente disposizione dei fili era quasi fine come la seta. Poi veniva di solito ‘tinta la pezza’, che in genere significava ritingere, poiché spesso veniva tinta preliminarmente la lana, di solito con guado, per produrre una base blu uniforme, o i filati, se si desiderava una varietà di colori, per stoffe raggiate (strisce) o ‘variegate’.
A partire dal X secolo, tuttavia, il procedimento di follatura in Italia divenne meccanizzato con il mulino di follatura ad acqua. L’Italia fu, in effetti, la prima regione industriale ad adottare questa innovazione significativa, che rappresentò non solamente il procedimento iniziale, ma, in effetti, l’unico procedimento fondamentale a venire meccanizzato nell’industria tessile laniera prima del XIX secolo. Stime recenti indicano che, mentre la follatura tradizionale con i piedi incideva all’incirca del 20% sui costi di fabbricazione a valore aggiunto (prima del finissaggio), la follatura meccanica incideva solo del 5 % su tali costi, rappresentando così un risparmio netto sui costi del 75%. In alcune industrie laniere di prodotti di lusso dell’Europa occidentale la follatura meccanica non venne adottata in quanto si riteneva danneggiasse le fini e delicate fibre di lana. Non ci è dato di sapere se tali considerazioni influenzassero o meno la politica produttiva dell’industria tessile di Firenze nel tardo Medioevo, industria che produceva panni in lana ugualmente costosi; è certo, tuttavia, che la follatura meccanica fosse utilizzata nei laboratori fiorentini dei Medici nel XVI secolo.
Gli altri importanti prodotti dei lanifici sono noti, almeno agli storici inglesi, come worsteds (tessuti in lana pettinati), e per gli storici continentali di questo ambito con i termini francesi: draperies légères o draperies sèches. Uno dei nomi più comuni per questo tipo di tessuti era ‘saia’ o saie (dal latino sagum: mantello in lana) e le industrie che li producevano (in molte varietà) erano chiamate sayetteries. Come suggerisce il primo termine francese, si trattava di tessuti relativamente leggeri – da un quarto a un terzo più leggeri dei tessuti a doppia altezza in lana follata. Erano costituiti di lane non ingrassate o oliate, poiché non necessitavano dello stesso grado di protezione delle lane fini a fibra corta e squamosa utilizzate per la produzione di vere pezze di lana; per questo motivo un termine francese comune utilizzato per indicare questo settore dell’industria era draperie sèche. Questi tessuti, invece, erano composti, sia per i filati della trama sia per i filati dell’ordito, di lane a fibra molto più lunga, grossolana e dritta, e molto robuste, ed entrambi i filati venivano pettinati più che cardati. I filati, a rocca o a filatoio, erano così robusti e ritorti strettamente che la fabbricazione era praticamente completata con il processo di tessitura, tranne che per l’imbianchimento o la tintura e la pressatura. Pertanto, i classici tessuti di lana pettinata veri e propri non venivano sottoposti a follatura, felpatura/garzatura o cimatura, e le loro grossolane fibre di lana molto più dritte, in effetti, non possedevano le proprietà di feltratura necessarie a questi procedimenti di finissaggio. La caratteristica più evidente di questi tessuti di lana pettinata, pertanto, era la loro armatura molto visibile, in vari motivi prevalentemente in diagonale, che di norma non si potevano notare in un autentico panno di lana. L’assenza di follatura (e quindi di compressione) spiega in buona parte la loro leggerezza; la combinazione di lane di costo notevolmente inferiore e di processi di produzione decisamente semplificati spiegano analogamente il loro prezzo relativamente contenuto.
Una terza varietà di stoffe in lana, chiamate comunemente ‘serge’, era semplicemente una combinazione di questi due tipi di base: un tessuto ibrido composto da un filato pettinato a fibra lunga ‘asciutta’ per l’ordito e da un filato in lana cardato e ‘ingrassato’ a fibra più corta per la trama. Questi tessuti venivano sottoposti a follatura solo parziale, soprattutto per rimuovere il grasso, e, come i veri tessuti di lana pettinata, spesso non venivano sottoposti a felpatura né a cimatura. Molti tessuti del XII e XIII secolo, specialmente quelli conosciuti con il nome di saga, sargia, stanfortes, appartenevano a questa varietà, come pure (evidentemente) le saies di Hondschoote del XV e XVI secolo, che servirono da modello alle cosiddette New Draperies, introdotte in East Anglia a partire dal 1560 circa da rifugiati fiamminghi dopo la Rivolta dei Paesi Bassi contro il dominio spagnolo.
Il commercio internazionale dei tessuti nel bacino mediterraneo: dal 1100 al 1320 circa
Tra il XII secolo e gli inizi del XVIII secolo, periodo preso in considerazione nella nostra ricerca, nell’industria tessile italiana e di altri paesi europei furono introdotti cambiamenti molto significativi, sia nell’ambito della produzione sia in quello del commercio internazionale. Nel corso del XII e XIII secolo dai primi documenti relativi alle vendite dei tessuti nel bacino del Mediterraneo si nota che i tessuti dell’Europa nord-occidentale (Francia settentrionale, Paesi Bassi, Renania, Inghilterra) erano preponderanti rispetto a quelli prodotti nello stesso bacino del Mediterraneo. Inoltre, la grande maggioranza dei tessuti venduti in questa regione, sia per valore che per volume, apparteneva alle varietà di tessuti ‘serge’ pettinati o semi-pettinati, molto più economici e leggeri. Patrick Chorley ha illustrato come i volumi di vendita di saie, biffes, burels, rayés e stoffe simili, più economiche e leggere, costituivano «in genere il 40-60 % di quelli di panni di lana colorati [franco-fiamminghi] della qualità più bassa», e in due listini prezzi iberici i loro valori ammontavano solo al 25-33 % di quelli dei panni di lana. Hidetoshi Hoshino ha trovato una gamma di prezzi simile a Firenze agli inizi del XIV secolo per i tessuti italiani e del Nord. Hilmar Krueger ha confermato queste stesse cifre nel commercio genovese di tessuti con la Sicilia, la Siria, l’Egitto e Costantinopoli verso la fine del XII secolo. In particolare, ha notato che saie e serge (sagie, sargie, saie) fiamminghe e del nord della Francia «venivano esportate con maggiore frequenza rispetto ad altri tipi di stoffe» e che le stoffe del nord, incluse in particolare le stanfortes [stamforts], stoffe inglesi più economiche e relativamente leggere, prevalevano sui tessuti del Mediterraneo. Dei tessuti prodotti in Italia «solo i fustagni lombardi costituivano un articolo d’esportazione di una certa rilevanza».
La produzione tessile italiana, 1100-1330 circa: fustagni, serge, panni in lana grossolana
In effetti, come ha dimostrato Maureen Mazzaoui, in Italia la più importante industria manifatturiera tessile nel XII, XIII secolo e agli inizi del XIV secolo fu senza dubbio quella della produzione di fustagni, un tessuto ibrido composto di un filato di ordito in lino e di un filato di trama in cotone. Il termine si ritiene derivi da al-Fustt (El-Frustat), un importante sobborgo industriale del Cairo, dove sembra che nel X o XI secolo ebbe origine la produzione di questo genere di tessuti utilizzando lino egiziano locale per l’ordito e cotone importato dalla Siria-Palestina o dall’Asia meridionale per la trama. Nel XIII secolo la produzione di questi tessuti molto leggeri e confortevoli si era ormai diffusa in tutto il bacino del Mediterraneo e anche nelle Fiandre, nell’Europa nord-occidentale. Sicuramente, però, leader indiscussa nella produzione europea di questi fustagni in lino-cotone era la Lombardia. Che Mazzaoui fosse o meno giustificata nel descriverla come industria di ‘produzione di massa, consumo di massa’, non ci sono però dubbi sul fatto che i suoi prodotti fossero anche relativamente economici, oltre che leggeri, e molto apprezzati fra le classi medio-basse di questa regione nel periodo compreso tra la fine del XII, tutto il XIII e gli inizi del XIV secolo.
In questo stesso periodo gli italiani producevano anche un’ampia varietà di altri tessuti leggeri e relativamente poco costosi, in quantità tali da poter essere diffuse all’epoca anche nel nord della Francia, nei Paesi Bassi e in Inghilterra. In molte città della Lombardia e anche in Toscana e a Venezia abbiamo trovato testimonianza di una notevole varietà di saie pettinate o semi-pettinate, e di panni in lana molto grossolani, tessuti in maniera differente da lane non pregiate e mediocri italiane, nord-africane e di altri paesi del Mediterraneo occidentale. Questi tessuti venivano commercializzati sotto vari nomi, come per esempio stametto, trafilato, tritana, taccolino, saia, saia cotonata. Si trovavano anche prodotti di tiretaines, molto simili ai fustagni – per peso e volumi di mercato – costituiti da un misto di fibre di lana, di lino e/o di cotone. Durante questo periodo gli Umiliati di Firenze, una confraternita laica che era stata fondata nel 1140 (e aveva raggiunto la sua attività massima nel 1270 circa), erano noti per la loro produzione di tessuti davvero economici per le classi più basse e per i poveri. Secondo Eleanora Carus-Wilson, che aveva esaminato un listino prezzi veneziano molto particolareggiato di tessuti nazionali e importati, datato 1265, «quasi senza eccezione alcuna le stoffe italiane sono economiche; anche le più costose non si avvicinano nemmeno ai valori di quelle di Ypres, Douai e Cambrai» [delle Fiandre] . Successivamente, l’analisi di Hidetoshi Hoshino dei registri di vendita dei grandi mercanti fiorentini agli inizi del XIV secolo rivelava un quadro molto simile: questi tessuti grossolani e relativamente economici rappresentavano la grande maggioranza delle loro transazioni di vendita di tessuti.
Le lane inglesi, i panni alla francesca, le Fiere dello Champagne e l’Arte di Calimala
Il ruolo significativo, tuttavia, che così numerose ditte mercantili italiane di rilievo – in particolare le ditte Riccardi, Pulci, Frescobaldi Bianchi, Cerchi Bianci, Bardi – ricoprirono alla fine del XIII secolo nell’acquisto di lane inglesi di qualità, soprattutto dai monasteri cistercensi, destinate all’esportazione farebbe pensare che alcune di queste lane abbiano raggiunto le città delle manifatture tessili in Lombardia e in Toscana. L’Inghilterra all’epoca era anche il fornitore principale di lana, con una media annua di esportazioni di 25.480 sacchi nel 1290 circa, che significavano una potenzialità di 110.414 pezze di pettinati a doppia altezza.
Una voce delle importazioni molto più importante in Italia alla fine del XIII secolo era rappresentata dai panni in lana non tinti realizzati, con le stesse lane inglesi, nelle cittadine dei Paesi Bassi meridionali e del nord della Francia – e noti come panni alla francesca – ma acquistati dai mercanti italiani alle Fiere dello Champagne, il cuore commerciale dell’Europa occidentale, e trasportati lungo la Valle del Rodano, passando poi per Genova, per arrivare in particolare in Toscana. A Firenze, mercanti e imprenditori industriali nell’Arte della Calimala prosperavano tingendo e operando il finissaggio di questi panni in lana franco-fiamminghi e riesportandoli verso vari mercati del Mediterraneo, compresi quelli del mondo islamico. Particolarmente rinomati erano i panni in lana, estremamente costosi e lussuosi, di colore scarlatto, tinti in un vivido colore cremisi appunto con il chermes (kermès in francese; kermes in inglese; carmes in spagnolo), estratto dalle uova essiccate di vari insetti del Mediterraneo.
Guerre, costi di transazione e trasformazioni nel commercio tessile internazionale: 1290-1330 circa
Questa struttura della produzione e del commercio dei tessuti in Italia dovette affrontare cambiamenti drammatici e di vasta portata a causa dello scoppio di guerre estese, praticamente ininterrotte e sempre più dirompenti tra il 1290 e il 1330 circa, che avrebbero condotto al ben più noto periodo della Guerra dei Cent’Anni (1337-1453). Queste guerre ebbero inizio quasi simultaneamente nel Mediterraneo orientale e occidentale e nell’Europa nord-occidentale: la conquista dei mammelucchi, con base in Egitto, degli ultimi avamposti dei Crociati in Palestina (1291); le guerre tra Genova e Venezia per il controllo dei commerci alternativi nel Mar Nero (1291-1299); le invasioni dei turchi ottomani dell’Impero bizantino in Anatolia e nei Balcani (a partire dal 1303); le invasioni della Spagna da parte dei merinidi (o marinidi) dell’Africa del nord (1291-1340, con guerre secondarie fra stati cristiani e musulmani); le guerre dei Vespri Siciliani (1282-1302), seguite in Italia dalle guerre tra guelfi e ghibellini (1313-43), che a loro volta diedero il via alle invasioni straniere (di tedeschi, ungheresi, angioini, catalani); in Europa nord-occidentale le guerre anglo-scozzesi, anglo-francesi e franco-fiamminghe, e le guerre civili, dal 1296 al 1328.
Certamente già nel 1320 circa, l’insieme di tutte queste guerre aveva innalzato sia i costi di trasporto sia i costi generali di transazione nel commercio internazionale sulle lunghe distanze spesso a livelli proibitivi per tessuti di valore relativamente basso. I costi principali non salirono così tanto a causa di distruzioni o addirittura di violenze, ma a causa del crollo delle istituzioni (che incoraggiò l’aumento del brigantaggio e della pirateria), dei divieti di commercio con il nemico imposti dalla Chiesa e dagli stati, specialmente con l’Egitto dei mammelucchi ( divieti che venivano elusi solo grazie a costose ‘licenze’ commerciali), della costruzione di navi con una maggiore potenza di fuoco (soprattutto con artiglieria nuova), e delle varie forme di finanziamento delle guerre, tramite tasse, requisizioni, prestiti forzosi e svalutazione delle monete. In particolare, queste guerre furono i principali responsabili del rapido declino e del crollo delle Fiere dello Champagne, da cui erano dipesi in maniera fondamentale i commerci della produzione tessile tra il Nord e il Sud. La rotta alternativa attraverso il Mar Mediterraneo e l’Oceano Atlantico sviluppata dagli italiani a partire dal 1320 circa non si rivelò un sostituto efficace per il trasporto di tessuti, soprattutto i tessuti più economici, poiché tali commerci marittimi, all’incirca cinque volte più lunghi via mare che via terra, da Venezia a Bruges, erano poco regolari e spesso minacciati dalla pirateria e dalle guerre navali.
L’evidenza dei danni che questo aumento dei costi di trasporto e di transazione prodotto dalla guerra aveva inflitto sui commerci dei prodotti tessili europei si può notare nella sparizione di fatto di quelle sayetteries e delle relative draperies légères (sèches) e di industrie similari nella Francia settentrionale, nei Paesi Bassi del sud e in Inghilterra, soprattutto quelle industrie che si erano specializzate nella produzione di tessuti pettinati o semi-pettinati relativamente leggeri ed economici destinati all’esportazione nei mercati del Mediterraneo. Moltissimi documenti sulle vendite di tessuti nel bacino del Mediterraneo a partire dal 1330 circa rivelano la sparizione di fatto di questi tessuti del Nord, più leggeri ed economici, anche dai mercati del Mediterraneo, fatta eccezione per vendite occasionali e casuali di qualche saia, in particolare le cosiddette ‘saie irlandesi’. L’Inghilterra (East Anglia), senza dubbio, continuò a produrre tessuti di lana pettinata da esportare in Germania e nel Baltico per parecchi decenni ancora, finché non scomparvero anch’essi, intorno al 1380, quando condizioni avverse similari – soprattutto l’aumento della pirateria e la guerra tra Polonia e Germania – incrementarono i costi di transazione del commercio nel Baltico. Il drastico declino della popolazione in Europa nel XIV secolo comportò un’impennata dei costi di transazione, poiché il settore delle transazioni nel commercio internazionale, con costi fissi molto elevati, era soggetto a significative economie di scala, cosicché i mercati più piccoli e contratti significavano costi unitari molto più elevati nel commercio.
I gravi problemi che si trovarono ad affrontare i produttori dell’industria tessile dell’Europa del nord, per i quali gli italiani erano stati i principali agenti commerciali e clienti, erano doppi. Innanzitutto, i loro costi di trasporto e di transazione erano tanto più elevati di quelli per i produttori locali del Mediterraneo di tessuti ‘economici’ della concorrenza. In secondo luogo, dato che tutti questi produttori, del Nord e del Mediterraneo, avevano continuato a fabbricare prodotti molto simili con sostituti molto vicini, ossia con una domanda molto elastica dei loro prodotti, furono costretti ad agire come ‘price-takers’, accettando il prezzo di mercato nel Mediterraneo come dato. Infatti, non potevano aumentare i prezzi per coprire i costi in salita senza perdere tutti i clienti a favore di concorrenti con costi inferiori e quindi prezzi inferiori. Di conseguenza nel Nord risulta evidente già nel 1330 circa che la maggior parte delle draperies della Francia nord-occidentale (Artois, Normandia), dei Paesi Bassi e dell’Inghilterra avevano scelto di ri-orientare quasi tutta, se non tutta, la loro produzione destinata all’esportazione verso pezze in lana di lusso e a prezzi molto elevati.
Una trasformazione così radicale nell’industria e nei commerci del settore si poneva due obiettivi o giustificazioni tra loro correlate che meglio garantivano la sopravvivenza del settore, sia in ambito produttivo sia in quello commerciale, e una certa prosperità sia all’Europa nord-occidentale sia, quindi, all’Italia, benché purtroppo solo per un numero inferiore di produttori e di mercanti. In primo luogo, i rapporti valore-peso di queste stoffe di lusso consentivano di sostenere meglio l’incremento verticale dei costi di transazione e di trasporto, che ovviamente avrebbero rappresentato una proporzione inferiore sul prezzo al dettaglio di quanto questi costi avrebbero rappresentato nel caso di saies, biffes, stanforte, e di altri tessuti più economici. In secondo luogo, elemento più importante era che tale produzione comportava un grado molto più elevato di differenziazione di prodotto – soprattutto per quelle tecniche che avevano come scopo quello di convincere i consumatori della qualità superiore dei loro prodotti rispetto a quelli della concorrenza. Pertanto queste cittadine la cui economia si basava sull’industria tessile, quanto meno in termini collettivi di corporazione dei tessitori di ciascuna comunità più che di produttori individuali o drapier, divennero ‘price-maker’ (ossia stabilivano il prezzo di mercato da adottare) impegnati in una concorrenza monopolistica, creando così una domanda molto più anelastica per i loro panni in lana che si differenziavano in maniera inequivocabile. Questa situazione premise loro di aumentare i prezzi, almeno a un livello ragionevole, per far fronte all’aumento dei costi, senza necessariamente perdere molti clienti – certamente non quanti ne persero i produttori di tessuti più economici del Nord.
Questo spostamento verso una produzione di lusso, tuttavia, in seguito sarebbe risultato davvero oneroso per molte industrie laniere – soprattutto le draperies più tradizionali e conservatrici, sia nei Paesi Bassi sia in Italia, poiché l’elemento sine qua non di questa produzione di lusso era l’utilizzo esclusivo delle lane inglesi di qualità più fine. Questa dipendenza grave ed essenziale pose presto queste imprese di lusso alla mercé della politica fiscale della corona inglese, vale a dire della tassa sulle esportazioni della lana, le cui conseguenze si sarebbero in breve tempo fatte sentire per le industrie tessili sia nei Paesi Bassi sia in Italia. Per tutta la prima metà del XV secolo, perciò, alcune delle industrie tessili più recenti nei Paesi Bassi e molte in Italia trovarono come unica fonte di salvezza l’utilizzo delle nuove lane spagnole merino, ma non riuscirono realmente a competere qualitativamente con le migliori lane inglesi prima del XVI secolo.
Le trasformazioni della produzione tessile italiana a partire dal 1320 circa: Lombardia e Toscana
Questo stesso modello economico, in effetti, esaminato per i Paesi Bassi meridionali, può essere applicato alle economie tessili dell’Italia tardo-medievale, come possiamo cogliere in due trasformazioni economiche chiaramente collegate. Innanzitutto, notiamo la stessa sparizione di molti di quei tessuti tra loro simili, più leggeri e più economici, destinati alle esportazioni dall’Italia a vari remoti mercati del Mediterraneo – e soprattutto del mondo islamico. Se le industrie lombarde del fustagno andavano ancora molto bene agli inizi del XIV secolo, ebbe inizio anche per loro un lento e irrimediabile declino a partire dal 1320 circa, quando va notato che le popolazioni sia della Provenza sia della Toscana (e probabilmente anche della Lombardia) già registravano un calo demografico significativo. La guerra più che le malattie fu probabilmente la causa principale del declino demografico ed economico, e nessun’altra regione dell’Europa occidentale sperimentò devastazioni continue a causa della guerra più gravi dell’Italia, che si protrassero per oltre sessant’anni.
Certamente tali guerre furono il fattore principale responsabile dell’ascesa dei concorrenti che sarebbero diventati la causa principale del crollo finale dell’industria lombarda del fustagno. Intorno al 1370, dopo che i conflitti militari nell’Italia settentrionale avevano gravemente interrotto l’offerta di fustagno commercializzati in Germania meridionale, le principali città di questa regione – Ulm, Augsburg, Ravensburg, Costanza e Basilea – iniziarono a convertire le loro produzioni di lino di bassa qualità destinate al mercato interno in produzioni di fustagni in lino-cotone. Pur avendo inizio come industria locale ‘in sostituzione all’importazione’, i fabbricanti di fustagni della Germania meridionale in seguito si espansero fino a diventare, verso la metà del XV secolo, i più importanti fornitori di questi tessuti leggeri relativamente poco costosi sui mercati europei, e rappresentando così il primo esempio consistente di industria tessile più economica che registrò una crescita notevole della capacità produttiva nell’economia europea del tardo Medioevo.
L’altra importante trasformazione commerciale-industriale ormai evidente nei primi anni del XIV secolo, certamente verso il 1320, fu il declino a Firenze dell’Arte di Calimala e, secondo un’immagine quasi speculare, l’ascesa della corporazione dei fabbricanti di stoffe, l’Arte della Lana, in precedenza molto meno importante ma che ora aveva sempre più iniziato a spostare la sua produzione verso i cosiddetti panni alla francesca – ossia panni di lana di qualità che imitavano lo stile dei prodotti franco-fiamminghi. Ovviamente la rapida ascesa di questa industria ‘in sostituzione all’importazione’ ebbe luogo direttamente a spese dell’Arte della Calimala, il cui declino è essenzialmente conseguenza del collasso delle loro reti commerciali basate sulle Fiere dello Champagne praticamente ormai scomparse. Si potrebbe invece attribuire tale situazione direttamente al rapido aumento dei costi dei trasporti e delle transazioni causato dall’importazione dei panni in lana franco-fiammighi, ma tale argomentazione diventa meno convincente quando si comprende che il successo dell’Arte della Lana dipendeva da un’altra voce delle importazioni proveniente da località anche più distanti, ossia le lane inglesi. Potremmo presupporre, in termini di economia del rapporto valore-peso, che sia meno costoso trasportare panni in lana semi-finiti invece di sacchi di lana grezza. Anche se la lana veniva sempre più importata via mare invece che via terra direttamente da Southampton passando per lo ‘Stretto del Marrocco’ (Gibilterra), il trasporto marittimo era molto costoso, e incideva di un 25% in più sul prezzo pagato per un sacco di lana del Cotswold scaricato dalle galee veneziane. Le galee prevedevano costi operativi molto superiori a quelli dei cogghe e successivamente delle caracche, ma erano più sicure (con premi assicurativi inferiori) per i carichi preziosi di lane inglesi e di panni in lana toscani.
Qualunque fosse il prezzo pagato dai lanaiuoli dell’Arte della Lana per queste lane inglesi, a partire dal 1330 circa ebbero un tale successo di produzione e di commercializzazione dei panni in lana di lusso a prezzi elevati che presto ridussero, anche drasticamente per la fine del XIV secolo, la produzione della loro linea di tessuti più economici, un tempo prevalente, destinata ai mercati esteri (la conservarono solo per i mercati locali), più o meno per le stesse ragioni delle draperies del Nord. Non ci sono dubbi che, mentre le industrie tessili delle Fiandre e del Brabante conservarono un certo successo nella commercializzazione nel Mediterraneo delle loro pezze in lana ugualmente pregiate e di lusso – in contrasto con la situazione disperata delle industrie di tessuti semi pettinati di fascia più economica, essi persero notevolmente terreno rispetto alle industrie laniere toscane e lombarde, soprattutto a partire dalla metà del XIV secolo, cosicché queste industrie tessili dei Paesi Bassi furono costrette a una dipendenza sempre maggiore sui mercati anseatici in Germania, Polonia, Russia e Scandinavia, come fecero anche le industrie laniere olandesi e inglesi. Secondo Hoshino, a Firenze verso la fine degli anni ’30 del XIV secolo i panni in lana molto fini della città erano diventati la principale voce delle esportazioni per le sue grandi imprese mercantili, ammontando chiaramente al 75% circa della vendita totale delle stoffe all’estero.
Hoshino, tuttavia, asserisce che l’Arte della Lana di Firenze non riuscì mai a spostare la produzione completamente verso articoli di lusso, con panni in lana anche più costosi, prima della fine del XIV secolo, quando le pezze di lana fiorentine chiaramente erano diventate di gran lunga le più costose disponibili sui mercati del Mediterraneo. Nel mercato pisano tra il 1354 e il 1371 il prezzo medio registrato per le stoffe in lana fiorentine era di 43,35 fiorini d’oro o £6,50 sterline, e il prezzo più alto era di 115 fiorini o £17,25 sterline; nel 1390 circa il loro prezzo medio era salito a 55,9 fiorini (£8,38 sterline). Verso la fine del XIV secolo, i panni in lana fiorentini erano anche gli unici più importanti prodotti tessili che la ditta Datini di Prato vendeva in Catalogna, con un valore medio di 64,43 fiorini (£9,66 sterline) per un totale del 27% del suo volume di vendita nella regione. Nei mercati della Siria e dell’Egitto in questo stesso periodo (1390-1405 circa), i panni in lana fiorentini erano anche i più costosi e fra i più diffusi e si vendevano a un prezzo compreso tra 35 e 54 fiorini (da £5,25 a £8,10 sterline), da mettere a confronto con i prezzi di vendita dei panni in lana delle Fiandre, ossia 38,5 fiorini (£5,78 sterline) quelli provenienti da Mechelen e 19,2 fiorini (£2,84 sterline) quelli provenienti da Wervik; le pezze in lana di Firenze, però, erano molto più lunghe di quelle prodotte nelle Fiandre. In Polonia, i panni in lana italiani più commercializzati erano certamente ancora una volta quelli fiorentini negli anni intorno al 1390, ma erano molto meno diffusi rispetto ai tessuti pettinati a doppia altezza delle Fiandre e del Brabante, e considerevolmente meno costosi dei più fini tessuti provenienti dai Paesi Bassi. Con una dimensione standard di 35 ell di lunghezza (24,5 metri), i panni in lana fiorentini si vendevano a 32 fiorini (£4,81 sterline), mentre quelli prodotti a Bruges e a Bruxelles si vendevano a 43,75 fiorini (£6,56 sterline) e 46,67 fiorini (£7 sterline).
Nel corso della seconda metà del XIV secolo altre città dell’Italia settentrionale avevano seguito l’esempio di Firenze e avevano iniziato a produrre tessuti in lana di grande pregio e qualità, anche se meno costosi di quelli fiorentini. In Toscana leader indiscussa rimase Firenze, ma altre città importanti per l’industria tessile erano Prato, Pisa, Lucca, Bologna e Perugia. In Lombardia la città di gran lunga più importante era Milano (dove nel 1390 si ipotizza l’esistenza di circa 363 ditte), ma altre città con produzione tessile di rilievo erano anche Como, Monza, Cremona, Parma, Bergamo, Brescia, Verona, Padova, Vicenza, Treviso e Mantova. Nei registri commerciali di Pisa per il 1354-71, le pezze in lana lombarde provenienti da Milano e Como, chiaramente di altissima qualità, avevano un prezzo medio di 27,55 fiorini (£4,13 sterline), mentre le stoffe toscane di Siena, Prato e Pisa venivano vendute a un prezzo medio un po’ più basso di 20,43 fiorini (£3,06 sterline). Sia le pezze toscane che lombarde erano, va sottolineato, molto più costose dei migliori tessuti pettinati a doppia altezza inglesi (tranne per i pochi di colore scarlatto) esportati in questo periodo, e le pezze lombarde avevano prezzi più alti di tutti i panni tranne i migliori realizzati nelle meno illustri nouvelles draperies delle Fiandre e del Brabante del XIV secolo. Nonostante gli elevati prezzi di vendita, i panni in lana toscani e lombardi nell’insieme totalizzavano oltre la metà (57%) delle vendite delle stoffe pisane di questo periodo. Nei registri dell’impresa Datini per le vendite di stoffe in Spagna dal 1394 al 1410, tuttavia, solo pochissimi panni in lana italiani facevano la concorrenza al dominio incontrastato dei panni in lana fiorentini: solo 86 tessuti di Prato e Genova, con un valore medio di 30,78 fiorini (£4,62 sterline), paragonati a 2652 panni in lana di Firenze, con un valore medio di 64,43 fiorini (£9,67 sterline). Tutti questi tessuti venduti in questi mercati sarebbero costati molto più del salario annuo di un muratore o carpentiere esperto.
In nessuno di questi registri della fine del XIV secolo – spagnoli, pisani, siciliani, bizantini, siriani, egiziani o polacchi – si trova alcuna evidenza di vendite di quegli economici tessuti in lana pettinata e saia fiorentini e lombardi che avevano caratterizzato in maniera così significativa i mercati del Mediterraneo del XII e XIII secolo, anche se senza dubbio la loro produzione continuò per il consumo interno italiano.
Il volume della produzione tessile fiorentina e delle forniture di lana nel corso del XIV secolo
Se possiamo essere abbastanza certi dei valori relativi dei tessuti venduti nei mercati del Mediterraneo nel corso del XIV secolo, siamo molto meno sicuri dei volumi differenti di produzione nel settore tessile. Il più famoso rendiconto contemporaneo, e quello che per certi aspetti meglio si accorda con questa tesi di un riordinamento industriale radicale, è quello presentato dal cronista fiorentino Giovanni Villani (morto nel 1348). Egli affermava che la produzione tessile fiorentina era crollata da circa 100.000 pezze verso il 1310 a circa 75.000 negli anni 1336-1338, e che il numero di imprese che producevano tessuti era sceso repentinamente da 200 a 150 (con un numero di artigiani impiegato nel settore stimato in 30.000 addetti). La stima del Villani dell’ultimo valore di produttività di 1,2 milioni di fiorini d’oro, e quindi un valore medio di 16 fiorini d’oro per pezza, era nondimeno ancora molto superiore del valore della più ampia produttività del 1310, «quando non venivano ancora importate le lane inglesi», poiché quelle pezze precedenti «erano più grossolane e valevano solo la metà». Hoshino, però, ha contestato le cifre del Villani, ritenendo che la produttività tessile della città fosse molto inferiore nel 1330 circa, ma è indubbio che la produzione tessile fiorentina sperimentasse un calo davvero drammatico verso la fine del XIV secolo.
Ci sono almeno tre ragioni che spiegano come tale declino fosse praticamente inevitabile. In primo luogo la repentina diminuzione della popolazione di Firenze: da una cifra stimata in 90.000 abitanti nel 1338 a soli 40.000 nel 1427 (secondo il Catasto di quell’anno, una drastica riduzione del 56%). La produzione tessile rimase un’industria ad alta incidenza di manodopera, senza alcuna significativa innovazione tecnologica a compensare una situazione che sicuramente comportò una riduzione drastica di manodopera disponibile. In maniera simile, il disastroso declino della popolazione dell’Europa occidentale in generale – forse il 40 % alla fine del XIV secolo – e lo sconvolgimento delle rotte commerciali e dei mercati tradizionali ovviamente significarono un grave declino nella vendita globale dei tessuti, benché senza dubbio un declino che, per Firenze e per altre importanti località di produzione tessile, fu compensato fino al punto che riuscirono a sostituire i panni in lana delle Fiandre, del Brabante e della Francia settentrionale nei mercati del Mediterraneo.
Il secondo motivo che spiega tale declino, sia nella produzione sia nelle vendite del settore tessile, è il già menzionato aumento dei prezzi in fiorini d’oro delle stoffe in lana fiorentine e di altre località italiane. Se accettiamo le valutazioni del Villani del valore medio del 1330 circa (16 fiorini), quel valore in termini reali era più che raddoppiato dopo circa sessant’anni. Se accettiamo anche la classica legge della domanda – dove la domanda varia inversamente con il prezzo – le vendite globali possono essere crollate sostanzialmente, anche se non proporzionalmente, se la domanda era diventata meno elastica a fronte di prezzi più elevati (in conformità con l’economia della concorrenza monopolistica del ‘price-making’ ossia dell’imposizione del prezzo di mercato). In effetti, fino a quando l’Europa occidentale sperimentò una distribuzione di ricchezze e di redditi più asimmetrica nella seconda metà del XIV secolo, come hanno sostenuto diversi storici, tali cambiamenti possono aver contribuito a sostenere le vendite di tali panni in lana di lusso. Questa condizione può anche aiutare a spiegare il riorientamento generale della produzione tessile dell’Europa occidentale verso tessuti di altissima qualità, che comprende anche, ovviamente, l’ascesa e l’espansione dell’industria della seta nell’Italia tardo-medievale.
Il terzo fattore correlato da prendere in considerazione per comprendere il rapido declino della produzione tessile fiorentina alla fine del XIV secolo contribuisce anche a spiegare il motivo per cui i tessuti fiorentini e di altre località italiane derivati da lane inglesi di qualità divennero così costosi: le tasse sulle esportazioni della lana imposte dalla corona inglese. La lana, voce predominante e massimamente redditizia nelle esportazioni dell’Inghilterra, e molto bene organizzata, fu l’oggetto più evidente e più importante di quella politica fiscale. Quando furono introdotte le tasse sull’esportazione nel 1275 con Edoardo I, erano piuttosto modeste: 6 scellini 8 penny di sterline per sacco, solo il 4,91% del valore medio esportato. Ma quando il nipote Edoardo III diede inizio alla Guerra dei Cent’Anni nel 1337, egli cercò di finanziare la sua conquista della Francia con un netto aumento dei dazi dell’esportazione sulla lana, da 26 scellini e 8 penny per sacco per esportazioni di mercanti locali e 30 scellini e 0 penny per sacco per esportazioni di mercanti stranieri (ossia gli italiani) nel 1337 fino a 50 scellini e 0 penny per sacco per i mercanti locali e 53 scellini e 4 penny per sacco per i mercanti stranieri nel 1370. Nel 1399 i dazi per gli stranieri erano saliti nuovamente a 60 scellini e 0 penny (£3 sterline) per sacco.
Poiché questi dazi erano fissi più che ad valorem, il vero onere tributario aumentò con la recessione generale e con la caduta dei prezzi nominali della lana che si verificarono alla fine del XIV secolo. Di conseguenza, nel 1400 i dazi per le esportazioni di mercanti locali ammontavano al 49,25 % del valore medio delle lane esportate, mentre l’onere tributario delle esportazioni per gli stranieri era ovviamente più elevato e si attestava al 59,10 % del valore medio. L’impatto di quell’onere fiscale si può notare dalle prove documentali, a partire dal 1430 circa: le lane inglesi (via Calais) costituivano il 65-70 % dei costi di produzione di pre-finissaggio delle industrie laniere di lusso dei Paesi Bassi meridionali. A causa dei più elevati dazi dell’esportazione sulla lana e dei costi di trasporto molto più elevati della spedizione delle lane inglesi verso l’Italia, tali lane ovviamente incidevano ancora di più sui costi di produzione e sugli altissimi prezzi di vendita nelle industrie tessili italiane.
Sicuramente tale aumento delle imposte contribuì al subitaneo declino delle esportazioni globali di lana, in particolare con l’istituzione della Dogana della Lana a Calais nel 1363, grazie alla quale la corona creò un cartello di mercanti della lana allo scopo di trasferire l’incidenza fiscale maggiormente sugli acquirenti stranieri (più che sugli allevatori inglesi, sotto forma di prezzi inferiori). Dal 1361-1370 al 1401-1410, il totale delle esportazioni della lana inglese scese da una media annua di 28.290,50 sacchi a soli 13.936,20 sacchi – un calo del 51 %, superiore a qualsiasi stima di calo demografico globale europeo di questo periodo. A causa del differenziale in aumento tra dazi sull’esportazione di mercanti locali e stranieri, il declino delle esportazioni di lana straniere (italiane) fu anche più rapido: da una media annua di 9.667,73 sacchi nel 1361-1370 a soli 1.338,10 sacchi nel 1401-1410. Tale dato si può esprimere in maniera ancor più drammatica calcolando che la quota italiana sulle esportazioni di lana inglese scese dal 34,17 % del totale nel 1361-1370 al 9,60 % nel 1401-1410. Di conseguenza, se l’Arte della Lana fiorentina non fosse riuscita a trovare una lana idonea a sostituire la lana inglese per tessere i propri panni di qualità di lusso, la sua produzione di tessuti di lusso destinata all’esportazione avrebbe necessariamente subito un crollo sostanziale (anche se la produzione di tessuti con lane locali per il mercato interno non subì probabilmente un crollo di uguale portata).
Si può quindi stimare meglio la portata di tale declino. Nel 1373, secondo la maggior parte degli storici, la capacità produttiva dell’industria tessile fiorentina era di circa 30.000 pezze di misura standard. Quando scoppiò il tumulto dei Ciompi nel 1378, la produzione annua richiesta era di 24.000 panni, e si può dedurre con una certa sicurezza che la produzione annua fosse inferiore a quella cifra. Secondo Davidsohn e Hoshino, la produzione tessile annua di Firenze era scesa a circa 19.000 pezze nel 1382, anno in cui ebbe luogo la repressione contro i Ciompi.
La produzione tessile fiorentina nel XV secolo: le lane di San Martino e di Garbo
Secondo Hoshino, il declino della produzione aveva avuto una curva ancora più drammatica negli anni 1425-1430, quando la capacità produttiva annua, a suo giudizio, oscillava tra 11.000 e 12.000 pezze. Più di recente Franceschi, sostenuto da Chorley, ha riportato una cifra anche inferiore di circa 9.000-10.000 pezze. In questo periodo l’industria laniera fiorentina si era divisa in due settori separati. Il primo era più vecchio, quello di San Martino, che continuava a fabbricare pezze molto costose e di lusso di qualità elevata utilizzando esclusivamente le lane inglesi più fini – un requisito ripetuto in un’ordinanza dell’Arte della Lana del 1408. L’altro settore era chiamato Garbo e produceva pezze di qualità media o bassa a prezzi di molto inferiori, essenzialmente perché le lane impiegate erano molto più economiche.
Secondo le Ordinanze dell’Arte della Lana emesse nel 1428 e nel 1430, le cosiddette lane Garbo consistevano di alcune lane italiane, la cosiddetta lana matricina, lane provenienti da Majorca, Minorca, e dalla Provenza e, più di recente, le lane San Matteo o le lane spagnole merino. Al contrario di alcuni fraintendimenti presenti nella letteratura sull’argomento, le lane spagnole merino non vennero utilizzate in Italia prima della fine del XIV secolo. In effetti, i documenti di cui siamo attualmente in possesso indicano che le lane merino erano il prodotto relativamente recente di un incrocio tra pecore di razza castigliana e montoni importati dai regni delle dinastie merinidi dell’Africa del nord, la cui introduzione si verificò probabilmente subito dopo, ma non prima, della vittoria spagnola sui Merinidi nella battaglia del Rio Salado, che ebbe luogo nel 1340 e che mise definitivamente fine alla minaccia di una riconquista musulmana. Dato che le lane spagnole pre-merino erano considerate tra le peggiori in Europa, al punto che il loro impiego era proibito anche nelle industrie di tessuti di livello più economico, e dato che le lane dell’Africa del nord erano allora di qualità mediocre, la loro evoluzione che le portò a diventare, tra la fine del XVI e gli inizi del XVII secolo, le lane più fini del mondo – primato qualitativo che detengono ancora oggi – rimane un mistero. Probabilmente si può spiegare per l’unione genetica di due geni recessivi delle due razze. Quell’evoluzione dipendeva anche dalla combinazione delle tecniche corrette di incrocio delle razze e di allevamento e alimentazione delle pecore.
Per quanto possano essere state inferiori le prime lane merino, anche qualche decennio dopo i lenti miglioramenti delle greggi castigliane, alcune industrie tessili italiane sperimentarono il loro impiego alla fine degli anni ’70 del XIV secolo (Milano diede il via nel 1375), nel 1380 circa e nei primi anni ’90 del XIV secolo (circa trent’anni prima che venissero accettate nel sud dei Paesi Bassi), in genere sotto il nome di lane di San Mateo. Nelle varie industrie tessili di Milano, Firenze, Verona, Prato e Genova in genere si trovavano appena al quarto o quinto posto per volumi, dopo (in questo ordine) le lane inglesi, di Minorca, di Majorca e francesi (provenzali). Queste lane spagnole costavano, per lo più, solo il 30-40 % rispetto alle lane inglesi della regione del Cotswolds usate nelle fabbriche tessili italiane. Chiaramente queste lane merino non avrebbero potuto salvare le fortune delle industrie dei tessuti di lusso fiorentine o di altre località italiane nel tardo Medioevo, che ancora richiedevano le lane inglesi più fini, ma certamente le lane spagnole conquistarono un ruolo sempre più importante nella produzione delle pezze di Garbo più economiche.
Le ricerche di archivio di Hoshino per il periodo 1454-1480, tuttavia, indicano che il loro ruolo fu poi oscurato dalle lane nazionali italiane: infatti le lane matricine, provenienti soprattutto dagli Abruzzi (L’Aquila, Narni, Orvieto, Perugia, Terni e Viterbo) rappresentavano il 71,8 % degli acquisti di lana di «numerose imprese fiorentine di lanaiuoli» che producevano panni di Garbo, mentre le lane spagnole erano seconde a una notevole distanza, giacché rappresentavano il 13,9 % degli acquisti di lana e le lane provenzali erano terze con il 12,3 % degli acquisti. La sua lista di prezzi della lana negli anni 1454-1500 indica che quelli della lana matricina in genere, ma non sempre, erano più alti di quelli della lana spagnola (ma molto inferiori a quelli della lana francesca). Secondo Goldthwaite, questa lana matricina «costava un terzo meno della lana inglese o la metà» verso la metà del XV secolo. Ma Hoshino indica anche che a partire dal 1490 circa ci fu un sostanziale aumento del commercio diretto della lana castigliana, ossia con la partecipazione allora diretta dei mercanti spagnoli. Nel corso del XVI secolo sicuramente le lane merino, ormai migliorate e quindi di maggior valore, iniziarono a ricoprire un ruolo più ampio nell’industria della lana fiorentina ed erano di gran lunga le lane più importanti impiegate dalla ditta Medici verso la metà del secolo.
Per quanto riguarda l’industria fiorentina della metà del XV secolo dobbiamo anche chiederci quali fossero i mercati principali serviti dai lanaiuoli fiorentini: si trattava di mercati locali, e per le classi di reddito più basso delle città toscane, oppure si trattava di mercati stranieri (e in particolar modo del Levante)? Come abbiamo già indicato, quella tessile era un’industria presente praticamente ovunque nell’Europa occidentale del tardo Medioevo. La maggior parte della produzione, in qualsiasi regione d’Europa, era destinata a soddisfare la richiesta dei mercati locali e nazionali, soprattutto delle classi di reddito più basso. Pertanto, queste stoffe in genere erano sempre prodotte utilizzando lane di provenienza locale e più economiche.
Sia Hoshino sia Chorley sostengono che la parziale ripresa dell’industria laniera fiorentina a partire dalla metà del XV secolo fosse in gran parte dovuta a due fattori: il successo sui mercati del Levante e soprattutto quelli turchi ottomani e in maniera particolare il successo della sua gamma più economica dei panni de Levante realizzati da lane di Garbo, che Chorley indica come (o presuppone) prevalentemente spagnole. Negli anni ’70 del XV secolo, secondo Chorley, le esportazioni tessili fiorentine verso il Levante e l’impero ottomano ammontavano a 7.000-8.000 pezze l’anno. Consultando registri veneziani risalenti al 1488, Hoshino ha stimato che la produzione tessile fiorentina fosse ora di circa 17.000 pezze l’anno – un recupero significativo – e di queste due terzi fossero costituiti da lane di Garbo (panni di Garbo). Chorley asserisce in particolare che le esportazioni tessili fiorentine verso il Levante si basavano in larga parte su commerci di scambio: «l’importazione di seta greggia iraniana [persiana] per la crescente industria della seta di Firenze, che rappresentava anch’essa una voce significativa nelle esportazioni verso il Levante».
Fattori macro-economici e calo dei costi di transazione: espansione e cambiamento nei commerci internazionali di tessuti a partire dal 1460 circa
Dobbiamo anche prendere in considerazione il ruolo dei fattori demografici e di altri fattori macro-economici sia nella ripresa sia nell’espansione della produzione tessile fiorentina, ma soprattutto l’aumento di quote di quella produzione a favore dei panni di Garbo relativamente più economici. Innanzitutto, la ripresa demografica italiana e poi quella del bacino del Mediterraneo, che si verificò molto prima e più rapidamente rispetto all’Europa nord-occidentale (dove non ebbe inizio prima del 1520 circa), ampliò sia la dimensione dei mercati dei consumi sia il potenziale della forza lavoro all’interno delle industrie tessili italiane. Intorno al 1520 la popolazione di Firenze aveva raggiunto circa 80.000 abitanti (ossia era quasi raddoppiata rispetto al 1427).
In secondo luogo, in parallelo e indubbiamente motivo di stimolo della ripresa sia economica sia demografica, l’altro fattore fu il boom dell’estrazione del rame e dell’argento nell’Europa centrale e nella Germania meridionale che, all’incirca tra il 1460 e il 1530, quintuplicò la produzione europea di argento e non solo interruppe la grave recessione della metà del XV secolo, ma diede anche origine alla Rivoluzione dei prezzi a partire dal 1515 circa (con altri sviluppi finanziari, discussi di seguito): un’inflazione sostenuta che durò fino al 1640 circa e che fu di forte stimolo all’espansione economica, soprattutto nella riduzione dei costi reali della manodopera e del capitale di credito. Buona parte dell’argento e del rame estratto in quel periodo in Germania meridionale consentì in particolare a Venezia di espandere i suoi commerci nel Levante, importando quantità maggiori di cotone siriano e cipriota per alimentare l’industria del fustagno in rapida espansione in Germania meridionale.
Lo sviluppo connesso, di importanza anche più rilevante, fu la ripresa delle rotte commerciali sulle lunghe distanze via terra o continentali, che ora andavano prevalentemente da Venezia attraverso la Germania meridionale fino alle Fiere di Francoforte, e quindi lungo il Reno fino alle nuove Fiere del Brabante, la cui espansione fece sì che Anversa diventasse la capitale commerciale e finanziaria dell’Europa del nord tra il 1460 e il 1560 circa. Come hanno ampiamente dimostrato Van der Wee e altri, queste rotte commerciali via terra e continentali (meno del 20 % delle distanze via mare) diedero un impulso economico molto maggiore all’espansione dei commerci internazionali rispetto alle rotte marittime del tardo Medioevo: con l’aumento dei capitali investiti, della produzione, dell’occupazione e dei redditi regionali globali, attraverso un effetto combinato moltiplicatore-acceleratore, che coinvolgeva aree geografiche molto più vaste e centinaia di altre città. I commerci continentali via terra, inoltre, portarono alla ripresa delle fiere internazionali su larga scala, in quanto forza trainante dell’espansione dei commerci internazionali in Europa, anche se in località completamente differenti rispetto a quelle del XIII secolo: non solo nelle nuove fiere di Francoforte e Brabante (Anversa e Bergen-op-Zoom) ma anche a Besançon, Ginevra e Lione.
In termini macro-economici più generali, queste forze di espansione combinate (demografiche ed economiche), molto sostenute da una relativa diminuzione delle guerre, in particolare con la fine della Guerra dei Cent’Anni (1453), invertirono completamente le forze di contrazione attive nel XIV secolo, per ristabilire le forze economiche molto più propizie ed espansionistiche dell’era della ‘Rivoluzione commerciale’ del XIII secolo. Così facendo, produssero anche una significativa riduzione dei costi di transazione nei commerci internazionali – tanto più quando ci rendiamo conto quanto le riduzioni dei costi nel settore delle transazioni fossero dipendenti da economie su larga scala, ossia con mercati urbani molto più ampi, più concentrati e più efficienti.
Queste riduzioni dei costi erano sostenute da significativi progressi tecnologici nei trasporti e nelle comunicazioni. Nel commercio marittimo lo sviluppo di gran lunga più importante fu, a partire dal 1450 circa, quello delle navi ‘atlantiche’ a tre alberi a vele quadre con armamento pesante (con vele combinate quadre e latine), soprattutto le caracche e i galeoni che, secondo Frederic Lane, portarono a una riduzione del 25 % dei costi di trasporto, compresi i costi assicurativi figurativi, con una maggiore sicurezza già agli inizi del XVI secolo. Queste navi garantirono agli europei il dominio delle rotte di trasporto mondiali per i quattro secoli successivi. Ugualmente importanti furono le innovazioni nei commerci continentali via terra: soprattutto l’istituzione di imprese professionali e specializzate di trasporto con carri, che impiegavano i nuovi carri Hesse a bassi costi e su larga scala, in convogli ben organizzati. Queste ditte offrivano ai mercanti passaggi assicurati per le loro merci a prezzi fissi predeterminati, con programmi di viaggio affidabili e fornivano anche un servizio postale efficiente via terra. Esse presto resero le rotte continentali via terra più veloci e più affidabili rispetto alle rotte atlantiche dall’Europa nord-occidentale al Mediterraneo. A questi sviluppi si può aggiungere la successiva ‘rivoluzione finanziaria’ nello sviluppo degli strumenti di credito negoziabili, sia nella finanza privata sia nella finanza pubblica (rentes), e dei cambi finanziari, a partire dagli anni ’20 del XVI secolo, che contribuirono verso la metà del secolo a una riduzione del 50% dei tassi di interesse reali.
Come le forze di contrazione e spaccatura economica nel tardo Medioevo avevano fatto aumentare i costi delle transazioni e avevano quindi gravemente ostacolato il commercio dei tessuti più economici sulle lunghe distanze, così l’inversione di queste forze e la riduzione significativa dei costi di transazione favorirono un vigore rinnovato e una maggiore importanza relativa dei commerci sulle lunghe distanze proprio dei tessuti più economici: come per esempio i panni di Garbo e i fustagni della Germania meridionale, già menzionati. Nei Paesi Bassi queste modifiche strutturali comportarono la ripresa e l’espansione significativa delle sayetteries in stile Hondschoote e di altre draperies légères, che già agli inizi del XVI secolo avevano sostituito i panni in lana tradizionali ed erano diventati l’industria tessile leader dei Paesi Bassi meridionali. La maggior parte di questi tessuti erano, come le saie di Hondschoote (saies, saaien) nel XIII secolo, un serge semi-pettinato, con un ordito (pettinato) a secco a fibra lunga e una trama ingrassata (cardata) a fibra corta. Erano tessuti molto più leggeri ed economici rispetto ai tradizionali panni in lana pettinati a doppia altezza (come già sottolineato), anche se non erano leggeri ed economici quanto i veri e propri tessuti di lana pettinata. Come si era verificato nel XIII secolo, il principale mercato per i prodotti delle sayetteries dei Paesi Bassi risultò essere l’Italia, il bacino del Mediterraneo in generale, e poi le colonie spagnole nelle Americhe.
Come rileva Hoshino, l’Arte della Lana cercò, con vari gradi di successo, di reintrodurre la produzione di simili tessuti più leggeri e semi-pettinati nella seconda metà del XV secolo: panni perignani (‘leggera stoffa di lana’, impiegando lane spagnole per la trama), saie a uccellini, e, infine e più importanti, panni di rascia – o ‘rascie’ – chiamate ‘rashes’ in inglese e introdotte con un’ordinanza nel febbraio del 1488, un serge che utilizzava anche lane spagnole per la sua trama cardata. Ma, come sottolineato di recente da Chorley, la sua importanza si rivelò soprattutto nel XVI secolo e più in particolare negli anni compresi all’incirca tra il 1520 e il 1570. Ebbero addirittura una posizione predominante sul mercato di Anversa verso la metà del XVI secolo, quando sia la stoffa ‘larga’ (doppia altezza) sia la stoffa ‘stretta’ figuravano tra gli articoli più costosi in vendita qui.
Tali sviluppi nell’industria tessile fiorentina della prima era moderna non significano, tuttavia, che le pezze di San Martino super lussuose, ancora tessute dalle finissime lane inglesi, avessero perso d’importanza nella metà del XV secolo. Pur avendo subito una contrazione nelle esportazioni verso il Levante, continuavano a godere di una quota predominante nei mercati italiani e specialmente all’interno dei confini del Papato. Pertanto, tra le importazioni verso Roma negli anni 1451-1476, le pezze fiorentine ammontavano a 13.528 ossia praticamente la metà (il 49,72 %) del totale di 27.210 pezze vendute in questo mercato, e di queste pezze fiorentine ben 5.354 (il 39,58 %) appartenevano alla costosissima varietà di ‘grana’ o di colore scarlatto, tinte con chermes (panni di grana). Al contrario, solo 821 pezze inglesi a doppia altezza e 805 pezze fiamminghe vennero vendute a Roma.
Il (temporaneo) declino della produzione tessile fiorentina e l’aumento della produzione tessile veneziana nel XVI secolo
Purtroppo il celebre studio di Hoshino sull’industria di Firenze non prosegue oltre la fine del XV secolo, ma per gli anni seguenti ci è utile la ricerca di Paolo Malanima sulle alterne fortune dell’industria tessile fiorentina nel XVI e XVII secolo. Più di recente, tuttavia, Patrick Chorley ha dimostrato che questo settore raggiunse il suo apogeo all’incirca nel 1520, con una capacità produttiva di circa 20.000 pezze di lana, forse il doppio di quanto prodotto un secolo prima: circa il 25 % (da 4.000 a 5.000 pezze) della varietà di San Martino, pur rappresentando la metà dei ricavi complessivi dell’industria, stimata in 600.000 fiorini, e il resto, pertanto, della varietà di Garbo dell’industria fiorentina. Prague Castle – Pražský hrad, or just hrad to Czechs – is Prague’s most popular attraction. According
to Guinness World Records, it’s the largest ancient castle in the world: 570m long, an
average of 128m wide and covering a total area bigger than seven football fields.
Its history begins in the 9th century when Prince Bořivoj founded a fortified settlement
here. It grew haphazardly as rulers made their own additions, creating an eclectic mixture of
architectural styles. The castle has always been the seat of Czech rulers as well as the official
residence of the head of state, although the Czech Republic’s first president, Václav Havel, chose
to live in his own house on the outskirts of the city.
Prague Castle has seen four major reconstructions, from that of Prince Soběslav in the 12th
century to a classical face-lift under Empress Maria Theresa (r 1740–80). In the 1920s President
Masaryk hired a Slovene architect, Jože Plečnik, to renovate the castle; his changes created some
of its most memorable features and made the complex more tourist-friendly.
We’ve organised this section starting with the castle’s main entrance at the western end, then
moving through the various courtyards and sights before exiting at the eastern end. You’ll need
at least two hours to see the main sights, and all day if you want to visit everything.
The following areas are wheelchair-accessible: the main entrance to St Vitus Cathedral, the
Old Royal Palace, Vladislav Hall, the Basilica of St George, Ball-Game House, Prague Castle

Il Castello di Praga – Pražský hrad, o semplicemente hrad per i cechi – rappresenta la maggiore attrazione della capitale. Secondo il Guinness dei Primati, è il più grande tra gli antichi castelli del mondo: vanta infatti una lunghezza di ben 570 m, una larghezza media di 128 m e una superficie totale superiore a quella di sette campi da calcio.
Le sue origini risalgono al IX secolo, quando il principe Bořivoj ordinò di gettare qui le fondamenta per un insediamento fortificato. I regnanti successivi lo accrebbero apportando di volta in volta ulteriori modifiche alla struttura, senza mai seguire un piano preciso e determinando così il suo eclettico accostamento di stili architettonici.
