Whether Watership Down or Harry Potter got you started, a look not so very far back digs up some real treasures

It’s not hard to begin the list. Asked to choose the best novels published in English over the past 60 years, this writer is lucky that she’s here in 2009 looking back to 1949: the year that Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four was published. In Britain that year, rationing was still in force; in the United States, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ground-breaking musical South Pacific opened on Broadway; the People’s Republic of China came into being the autumn. This was the Atomic Age; the beginning of the modern world — or so we modern folk like to think. What did that mean for the novel — and for us?
It’s tempting to think that in the past century, in particular, time has somehow moved faster than it did for our forebears. Are we deluded to imagine that this is so? Perhaps not, if we are considering technology and technological advances. I am willing to bet that our ancestors used their flint tools for a greater number of generations than we will use our iPhones; and whether digitised literature will survive as long as the clay tablets that preserved The Epic of Gilgamesh is not an idle question.
Anyone still got any 5¼in floppy disks? My point exactly. But Gilgamesh, the epic poem from Ancient Mesopotamia that is held to be among the earliest of humanity’s “literary” writings, is perfectly accessible to an audience of today. The tale of a man who learns humility through the gifts of love and friendship, who suffers from a sense of his own mortality and seeks a cure for it, seems to be the kind of story that human beings, as long as they have been human beings, have never tired of telling and being told. Look at Gilgamesh alongside Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (2006) and you’ll see what I mean.
Beowulf, that awesome work of Anglo-Saxon literature, survives in a single manuscript at the British Library; its edges scorched by an 18th-century fire. To some extent, the literature of the past has survived by chance. But, just over the rim of the 21st century, we are able to hazard a guess at which recent works might survive us. I’ll place my bets on story over structural tricks: Kingsley’s Lucky Jim (1954) rather than Martin’s Time’s Arrow (1991), let’s say. It’s worth trying, when regarding the literary landscape, to consider also that English-speakers are particularly poor at reading works that originally appeared in other languages: only three percent of the books published in this country are books in translation. So looking beyond our own linguistic borders will be crucial. While celebrating the genius of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950) or Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook (1962), it must be noted that Naguib Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy (1957), or Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita (1967) and even Pauline Réage’s The Story of O (1954) also made their mark.
There will never be a single list, however, of “the 60 best novels of the past 60 years”; you can’t please all of the people all of the time. For what you love to read depends on who you are; what made you read it; where you were when you first discovered a book; who pressed it into your hand; what mood you were in the day you turned the first page; whether the scent of the pages reminded you of libraries past.
Just looking at the cover of Richard Adams’ Watership Down (1972) takes me back to a little cottage in Yorkshire where I was staying one summer with some friends of my parents; I was 9. I didn’t have anything to read and there on the shelf was a book with a rabbit on the cover. My life was altered that instant. (NB: I am retelling this story, very regular readers of The Times may note; alas, I used the word “bunny” to describe the illustration when I remarked on this some years ago, and got a stern letter from Adams: he had made sure that nothing that could ever be described as a “bunny” was on any cover of WD.) Think of a book and I bet you too will think of where you first read it, and how. We carry our hearts with us everywhere we go; the books fit neatly inside.
Why 60 years? Well, the good old Times Cheltenham Festival of Literature was born in 1949; a fine anniversary to celebrate, and a chance to look back over what’s been and speculate as to what will go forward. Will the authors on their book tours now be the authors literary history remembers? I don’t have the answer. It’s worth thinking about, that’s all. John Kennedy O’Toole, author of the classic novel A Confederacy of Dunces, won a Pulitzer Prize for that book — nearly a dozen years after his death. And if Beowulf had been devoured in that fire, what would we all be reading now?

ليس من العسير أن نشرع في سَرد القائمة. فقد طُلب مِن كاتبة هذه السطور أن تختار أفضل الروايات التي صدرت بالإنجليزية على مدار السنوات الستين الماضية، وكان مِن حسن حظها أنها هنا في عام 2009 ترنو إلى عام 1949: فهو ذلك العام الذي صدرت فيه رواية أورويل "ألف وتسعمائة وأربع وثمانون". وفي بريطانيا في تلك السنة، كانت الحصص التموينية لم تزل قائمة. وفي الولايات المتحدة، تم افتتاح العمل الموسيقى الكاسح "جنوب الهادي" لرودجرز وهامرشتاين على مسرح برودواي. وفي خريف ذلك العام خرجت جمهورية الصين الشعبية إلى الوجود. لقد كان هذا العصر عصر الذرة، بداية العالم الحديث - أو هكذا نظن نحن المعاصرين. ولكن ماذا يعني ذلك للرواية – ولنا نحن أيضاً؟

هل ما زال لدى أيّ واحد منا الأقراص المرنة "فلوبي ديسك"؟ هذه هي النقطة التي أقصدها. إن "جلجامش"، تلك الملحمة الشعرية العتيقة من بلاد الرافدين والتي تُعدّ إحدى الكتابات الأدبية المبكرة في تاريخ الإنسانية، ما زالت في متناول الجمهور إلى يومنا هذا. وحكاية الرجل الذي يتعلَّم التواضع من عطايا الحب والصداقة، وهو يعاني من شعوره باقتراب وفاته ويبحث له عن علاج، تبدو مِن هذا الصنف من القصص الذي لا يملّ فيه البشر – ما داموا بشراً – مِن سَرد الحكايات والاستماع إليها. انظر إلى "جلجامش" بموازاة رواية كورماك مكارثي "الطريق" (2006) وستدرك ما أقصده.

ومع ذلك، فلن تكون هناك لائحة وحيدة لـ "أفضل ستين رواية في الستين سنة الماضية"، إذ ليس في مقدورك أن تُرضي جميع الناس في جميع الأوقات. ذلك أنّ ما تحب أن تقرأه إنما يعتمد على مَن تكون أنت، وما الذي جعلك تقرأ ما تقرأه، وأين كنتَ عندما اكتشفتَ الكتاب لأول مرة، ومَن الذي جعله في متناول يدك، وكيف كان شعورك في ذلك اليوم الذي قلّبتَ فيه أول صفحة، وهل كانت رائحة الصفحات تذكرك بالمكتبات في الماضي.
إن مجرد النظر إلى غلاف رواية "ووترشيب داون" لريتشارد آدامز (1972) يعيدني إلى ذلك الكوخ الصغير في يوركشاير الذي قضيتُ فيه إحدى الإجازات الصيفية مع بعض أصدقاء والدَيَّ، وكنتُ وقتها في التاسعة من عمري. لم يكن لديّ ما أقرأه، وكان هناك على الرف كتاب مرسوم على غلافه أرنب. ومن ساعتها، ومجرى حياتي تغيّر. (ملحوظة: أنا هنا أعيد ذِكر هذه القصة - وقد يلاحظ ذلك قرّاء "التايمز" المواظبون - وللأسف استخدمتُ كلمة "أرنوب" لوصف تلك الصورة المرسومة التي علقتُ عليها منذ عدة سنوات، وجاءتني رسالة صارمة من آدامز: أكّد فيها أنه لا يوجد ما يوصَف بالـ "أرنوب" على أي غلاف من أغلفة "ووترشيب داون"). فكِّر في أيّ كتاب وأراهنك على أنك أيضاً ستفكر أين وكيف قرأته لأول مرة. إننا نحمل قلوبنا معنا أينما حللنا، وهكذا الكتب تتلاءم تماماً مع دواخلنا.
إذن لماذا ستون عاماً؟ حسناً، لقد خرج إلى النور مهرجان التايمز شلتنهام الأدبي العريق في عام 1949. وهي ذكرى سنوية تستحق الاحتفال بها، وفرصة للتأمّل فيما كان وتوقّع ما سيكون. فهل سيكون المؤلفون الذين تتناقل أسماؤهم معارض الكتب هم ذات المؤلفين الذين سيتذكرهم التاريخ الأدبي؟ لست أملك جواباً على ذلك، بل الأمر يستحق مزيداً من التفكير. لقد فاز جون كينيدي تول، مؤلف الرواية الكلاسيكية "كونفدرالية التنابل"، بجائزة بولتزر عن هذا الكتاب، وذلك بعد وفاته بحوالي عشر سنوات. ولو أن بيوولف قد التهمتها تلك النيران، فما الذي كنا سنقرأه جميعاً الآن؟ |
