1. Introducción.
En una publicación anterior (Fernández-Tresguerres 2005) presentamos algunos aspectos de la arquitectura doméstica de Jebel al-Mutawaq, en especial la uniformidad de su arquitectura, por lo que, la desviación de esa norma en las estructuras que describiremos a continuación, permiten la firme sospecha de una finalidad distinta a la ocupación familiar. Este conjunto formado por tres casas (75, 76 y 77), un gran patio, y una serie de dependencias levantadas en el interior de éste, y debido a la presencia en ellas de una decoración cerámica con motivos de serpientes, fue denominado “Santuario de las Serpientes”. La excavación de este complejo se realizó durante las campañas de 2003 a 2006 (Fig. 1).
2. La construcción principal: Casa 76.
Antes de su excavación solo era visible en superficie la hilada superior de sus muros, y sus rasgos coincidían con los observados en todas las habitaciones del poblado: casa alargada (longhouse) planta oval, con orientación noreste-sudoeste, de 12,67 m de largo por 3,30 m de ancho (en algunos puntos alcanza 3,85 m.). Es contrario a la lógica de una habitación ser construida sobre una pendiente pronunciada y parece innegable que hubo interés en mantener esa inclinación con un desnivel entre los extremos de la casa superior a los dos metros).
Construcción.
El edificio se levantó sobre la misma roca caliza y la fuerte pendiente permitió que, en la parte más baja, se conservasen los muros con una elevación de más un metro; éstos fueron construidos con grandes piedras sin trabajar y sin utilizar ningún tipo de argamasa. Donde se conservaba el muro se veía que había sido construido con bloques dispuestos en hiladas irregulares, en el resto del edificio sólo aparecía la base de los muros, en buena parte caídos tanto hacia el exterior como hacia el interior de la estructura. Los elementos conservados y el tamaño de los bloques hacen sospechar que la altura de la pared debía estar en torno a los dos metros (Fig. 2).
La cabecera absidal del edificio, orientada hacia el este es sorprendente ya que el muro curvo que la cierra y el suelo habían sido tallados en la misma roca caliza en unos 0,54 m de profundidad, creando una plataforma irregular y formando el muro toscamente vertical que define la extremidad absidal de la casa, sobre él se colocaron grandes bloques de piedra que definen el perímetro de la construcción (Fig. 3).
Salvo en la citada cabecera, los constructores en ningún momento intentaron anular la fuerte inclinación de la roca. Más bien la preservaron, ya que el plano inclinado irregular de la roca facilitaba el tránsito ascendente a lo largo de la casa, desde la plataforma inferior hasta la superior. No obstante, observando los elevados escalones, verticales del patio, parece que en el interior de la casa los anularon para dejar más bien un tosco plano inclinado.
Tampoco es normal el hecho de que la Casa 76 tenga dos puertas, una en cada uno de los lados largos de la planta, y que éstas no se encuentran afrontadas. Una de ellas se abre a un patio y la otra a otro espacio relacionado con la Casa 77. Ninguna de las dos fue construida según los esquemas definidos y documentados en algunas de las casas de Mutawwaq como, por ejemplo, en la nº 20. En la Casa 76 las puertas se limitan a una interrupción del muro, colocando como umbral una serie de lajas más o menos planas en su cara superior. La amplitud de las puertas difiere de los datos obtenidos en otras construcciones de Mutawwaq ¬(normalmente, de unos 0,75 m. de ancho): una ellas tiene 1,90 m de ancho, y la otra 1,25 m. de largo. La puerta oriental fue señalada en el interior del edificio con tres bloques perpendiculares al muro. Junto a ellos se encontraron agrupados varios utensilios de sílex (raspadores, hoces, un chopper), un punzón de hueso y unos pocos restos de cabra u oveja.

1. Introduction.
In an earlier publication (Fernández-Tresguerres 2005) some aspects of the domestic architecture of Jebel al-Mutawaq were discussed, especially regarding its uniformity. The fact that the structures that are described in the following do not conform to this expectation would seem to indicate that it was not used as a family dwelling. The complex is made up of three dwellings (75, 76 and 77) and a large patio that has a series of rooms built within it, and given that pottery was found inside them which had been decorated with serpents, it has been called the “Temple of the Serpents”. This site was excavated in the campaigns of 2003 to 2006 (Fig. 1)
2. The main building: dwelling 76.
Before excavation began only the top line of the bricks of the walls of the dwelling could be seen, and it has the same features as all of the rooms that have been observed in the village: an oval longhouse, facing northeast-southeast, 12.67m long and 3.30m wide (reaching 3.85 in some points). It goes against logic to build a room on a steep incline, and it would seem that this was done deliberately to preserve the two meter difference in surface level between the two ends of the upper house.
Construction.
The building was constructed on the limestone itself and the steep incline allowed for the walls in the lower section, which are more than a meter high, to survive. They were built out of large natural stones without using any type of mortar. The surviving walls show that it was built with blocks placed in irregular rows. In the rest of the building the walls have collapsed, falling both inside and outside of the structure, and only the base of the walls is still visible. The surviving elements and the size of the blocks appear to suggest that the wall would have been approximately two meters in height (Fig 2).
The head of the building’s apse, which faces east, is surprising as both the curved wall that closes it and the floor were cut out of the same limestone rock at some 0.54m in depth. This created an irregular platform and it forms a crudely vertical wall which defines the apse end of the house. In addition, blocks of stone were placed on it that define the perimeter of the building (Fig3).
With the exception of the aforementioned head, the builders did not attempt to do anything about the steep incline of the rock. Instead it was kept as the irregular incline made it easier to move upwards along the house from the lower platform to the upper one. However, with regards to the high vertical steps of the patio, it would seem that they were levelled out inside the house to leave a crude inclined plane.
The fact that dwelling 76 has two doors is also unusual; there is one on each of its long sides, and they do not face each other. One of them opens onto a patio and the other onto a space that is related to dwelling 77. Neither of them were built according to the plans that are defined and documented in some of the dwellings of Mutawwaq, as for example, in nº 20. In dwelling 76 the doors are simply an interruption in the wall, using a series of slabs, which are more or less flat, to form the threshold. The size of the doors is different from the information obtained in other buildings in Mutawwaq (normally around 0.75m in width): one of them is 1.90m in width and the other is 1.25m in length. The eastern door is marked inside the dwelling by three blocks which are perpendicular to the wall. Various flint utensils were found together beside them (scrapers, sickles and a chopper), a bone awl and the remains of a goat or a sheep.
