Passenger rights
Airlines do not guarantee their schedules. There are many things that can and often do make it impossible for flights to leave on time. If the flight is canceled, some airlines will re-book passengers on the first flight to their destination on which space is available, at no additional charge. Finding extra seats may be difficult, however, especially over holidays and other peak travel times.
Each airline has its own policies about what it will do for delayed passengers waiting at the airport. If a flight is delayed, check with the airline staff to find out what services they will provide. Ask about meals, phone calls, and hotel rooms. Airlines almost always refuse to pay passenger for financial losses resulting from a delayed arrival. Airline delays and cancellations are not unusual, and defensive planning is a good idea when time is your most important consideration.
Most airlines overbook their scheduled flights to a certain extent, and passengers are sometimes left behind or “bumped” as a result. The Department of Transportation (DOT) requires airlines to ask people who are not in a hurry to give up their seats voluntarily, in exchange for compensation. Those passengers bumped against their will are, with a few exceptions, entitled to compensation.

Frecventa cancerului în lume ar putea creste cu 50%, atingând cifra de 15 milioane anual pâna în anul 2020.
Raportul mondial despre cancer demonstreaza clar ca actiunile întreprinse contra tabagismului, infectiilor si pentru o alimentare mai sanatoasa pot preveni o treime de cazuri de îmbolnavire si permit tratarea altei treimi.
Tutunul - cea mai sigura posibilitate de prevenire primara
Consumul de tutun ramâne a fi cel mai mare risc evitabil de cancer. În lume în secolul XX circa 100 milioane de persoane au decedat din cauza maladiilor legate de tabagism (cancer, pneumopatii cronice, maladii cardiovasculare, accidente cerebrovasculare). Jumatate din fumatorii înraiti mor din cauza acestei deprinderi. Un sfert din fumatori mor prematur (între 35 si 69 de ani).
Riscul cancerului pulmonar este mai mare de 20-30 de ori la fumatori decât la nefumatori. În tarile cu prevalenta a tabagismului si unde multe femei fumeaza pe tot parcursul vietii lor adulte, se poate atribui fumatului 90% din cancerele pulmonare la persoanele de ambele genuri.
Pentru vezica biliara si rinichi riscul este de 5-6 ori mai mare, ceea ce semnifica mai mult de 50% din cazuri datorate tutunului. Riscul relativ pentru cancerul cavitatii bucale, faringelui, laringelui si esofagului la fumatori este de 6 ori mai mare decât la nefumatori.
Fumatul inhalat prin tabagismul pasiv este de asemenea cancerigen si poate creste cu 20% riscul de cancer pulmonar.
Situatia tabagismului este alarmanta în tarile Europei Centrale si de Est si în diverse tari în dezvoltare sau recent industrializate. În întreaga lume tinerii au tendinta sa fumeze din ce în ce mai devreme, ceea ce îi predispune unor riscuri importante la un stadiu ulterior al vietii lor.
Chiar daca este mai bine sa nu începi niciodata sa fumezi, datele epidemiologice arata de asemenea ca exista avantaje enorme daca renunti la fumat. Il consumo di tabacco rimane il maggior rischio evitabile di cancro. Nel XX secolo circa 100 milioni di persone sono decedute nel mondo a causa delle malattie legate al tabagismo (cancro, pneumopatie croniche, malattie cardiovascolari, incidenti cerebrovascolari). La metà dei fumatori malati muoiono a causa di questo vizio. Un quarto dei fumatori muoiono prematuramente (tra i 35 e i 69 anni).
Il rischio di cancro polmonare è 20-30 volte superiore per i fumatori che per i non fumatori. Nei paesi in cui prevale il tabagismo ed in cui molte donne fumano durante tutto il corso della loro vita adulta, si può attribuire al fumo il 90% dei casi di cancro polmonare a persone di entrambi i sessi.

Anche se è meglio non cominciare mai a fumare, i dati epidemiologici mostrano altresì che esistono dei vantaggi enormi se si rinuncia a fumare. La rinuncia ha effetti maggiori se avviene nei primi trent’anni di vita, ma si ottiene una diminuzione considerevole dei rischi, maggiore del 60%, anche tra coloro che decidono di smettere di fumare dopo i 50 anni.

It must have been in the early 1950s in that paradoxical place of seacoast, desert sun, and brush fires that is Southern California. No fires were burning in the primeval canyons just then, and no great rains were falling. It was simply one of those glorious Southern California summer Sunday mornings when the sun was everywhere in my parents' bedroom.
Usually on a Sunday morning, they got their privacy. But sometimes the family assembled in the master bedroom because it admirably served as a family room as well. Part of their room was an entrance to another room that had only one small window and a low ceiling. At night we used that attic as a planetarium and imagined that the stars projected on the ceiling were real. Because the roof was low, in order to use the ceiling for the projector, you had to recline on large pillows on the wooden floor.

Saranno stati i primi anni 50, in quel paradossale incrocio tra costa, sole cocente e incendi che è la California meridionale. In quel periodo non c'era alcun incendio nei canyon primordiali e nemmeno pesanti piogge. Era semplicemente una di quelle bellissime domeniche mattina d'estate della California meridionale in cui il sole era ovunque nella camera da letto dei miei genitori.
Di solito la domenica mattina avevano la loro privacy. Tuttavia a volte la famiglia si riuniva nella camera da letto perché questa fungeva mirabilmente anche da salotto. Parte della loro camera si apriva su un'altra stanza che aveva solo una piccola finestra ed un soffitto basso. Di notte usavamo quell'attico come un planetario ed immaginavamo che le stelle proiettate sul soffitto fossero vere. Poiché il tetto era basso, per usare il soffitto per il proiettore ci si doveva stendere su alcuni grandi cuscini sul pavimento in legno. |
