Die komplexe Entwicklungsstörung, die vier Mal häufiger bei Jungen als bei Mädchen auftritt, äussert sich in einem weiten Spektrum von Symptomen, darunter Kommunikationsproblemen, extremer Zurückgezogenheit oder zwanghaften Verhaltensweisen. Viele Kinder entwickeln sich zunächst unauffällig, meiden dann aber plötzlich Augenkontakt, spielen nicht mehr oder hören auf zu sprechen. Meist wird Autismus erst ab dem Alter von drei Jahren diagnostiziert. Inzwischen haben sich Schulen und soziale Dienste auf dem Umgang mit autistischen Kindern eingestellt. Aber die Störung ist unheilbar, und wenn Eltern oder Betreuer älter werden, landen vielen autistische Erwachsene in Heimen oder werden anders von der Gesellschaft getrennt. Das sei nicht nötig, betonen die Mitarbeiter von Judevine.
Die Organisation betreut im Bundestaat Missouri mehr als Betroffene zwischen Kleinkind- und Rentenalter.

Soprattutto per gli autistici oramai diventati adulti, ci sono pochi centri di assistenza che possano aiutarli ad affrontare la vita. Stando alle statistiche, 1 bambino su 166 è autistico. I complessi disturbi dello sviluppo, colpiscono i maschi quattro volte più frequentemente delle femmine e si manifestano con un vasto spettro di sintomi come: problemi di comunicazione, carattere eccessivamente introverso o comportamenti ossessivo-maniacali. Molti bambini che crescono in modo del tutto normale,improvvisamente evitano contatti visivi, smettono di giocare o di parlare. Nella maggior parte dei casi, l’autismo viene diagnosticato prima che il bimbo compia il terzo anno di vita. Nel frattempo sono sorte scuole e i servizi sociali si stanno attrezzando per gestire i rapporti con i bambini autistici. Ma la disfunzione è incurabile e quando i genitori o gli accompagnatori invecchiano, molti autistici vanno a finire in istituti di educazione o vengono emarginati dalla società. Prevalence and clinical significance of cardiovascular abnormalities in patients with the Leopard Syndrome
The aim of this study was to characterize cardiovascular involvement in a large number of patients with LEOPARD syndrome. Twenty-six patients (age range 0 to 63 years, median age at the time of the study evaluation 17 years) underwent clinical and genetic investigations. Familial disease was ascertained in 9 patients. Nineteen patients (73%)showed electrocardiographic abnormalities. Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy was present in 8 patients (30%).Valve (57%) and coronary artery (15%)anomalies were also observed. Single patients showed LV apical aneurysm, LV noncompaction isolated LV dilation, and atrioventricular canal effect. During follow- up, 2 patients died suddenly , and 2 patients had cardiac arrest. These patients had LV hypertrophy. Despite the limited number of subjects studied, genotype-phenotype correlations were observed in familial cases. In conclusion, most patients with LEOPARD syndrome showed LV hypertrophy, often in association with other valvular or congenital defects.

Prevalenza e significatività clinica delle anomalie cardiovascolari in pazienti affetti da sindrome LEOPARD
L’obiettivo di questo studio è stato di caratterizzare il coinvolgimento cardiovascolare in un grande numero di pazienti affetti da sindrome LEOPARD. 26 pazienti (con un range di età 0-63 e un’ età mediana che all’epoca della valutazione era di 17 anni), sono stati sottoposti ad uno studio genetico.
In 9 pazienti è stata accertata una malattia familiare. 19 pazienti hanno presentato delle anomalie elettrocardiografiche. 19 pazienti (73%), hanno riscontrato una ipertrofia ventricolare sinistra ,di questi, 9 avevano un’ostruzione del tratto di deflusso del ventricolo sinistro, in 8 pazienti (30%) è stata riscontrata un’ipertrofia ventricolare destra. Sono state riscontrate anomalie alle valvole(57%) e alle arterie coronariche(15%). Singoli pazienti hanno mostrato un aneurisma apicale al ventricolo sinistro, una non compattazione al ventricolo sinistro e un difetto al canale atrioventricolare. Durante il follow-up, 2 pazienti sono morti improvvisamente e 2 pazienti hanno avuto un arresto cardiaco. Questi pazienti hanno avuto un’ipertrofia al ventricolo sinistro. Nonostante il numero limitato di soggetti studiati, nei casi familiari sono state riscontrate correlazioni genotipo-fenotipo. In conclusione, la maggior parte dei pazienti affetti dalla sindrome LEOPARD, mostrano un’ipertrofia al ventricolo sinistro spesso associata ad altri difetti valvolari o congeniti.
