Todos y cada uno disfrutarían de sus vacaciones. ¿Por qué entonces yo no habría de disfrutar de unas también? Trabajaba duro, había manejado ya varios proyectos de vital importancia para el avance de los negocios en los que se embarcaba la empresa; meses, días, horas frente a mi escritorio, seleccionando candidatos, revisando solicitudes, asignando proyectos y asegurándome de que cada proveedor de servicios recibiera su pago sin demoras.
¿Cómo era posible entonces que los demás estuviesen empacando sus trajes de baño o sus botas de nieve cuando yo sudaba excesivamente bajo el traje de corte inglés? Yo, que preparaba el café de la mañana y la tarde, que contestaba todas las llamadas que Gutiérrez y Amingorena no querían atender, que lidiaba con los asuntos desagradables entre proveedores y clientes, ¿no habría vacaciones para mí?
Veía como cada empleado entraba en la oficina de Vargas y salía triunfante, sonriendo, pensando en las vacaciones que acababa de ganarse. Sabía que debía tomar coraje y entrar a esa oficina yo también a arrebatar mis vacaciones de las manos de quien también tendría el derecho de negármelas. Y lo hice. Y aquí estoy. Disfrutando de una oficina vacía.
Las palabras de Vargas resonaban aún en mi cabeza: "No, Juancito. Lamentablemente tu viajecito a la costa no podrá ser. Por el momento necesito que alguien cuide del fuerte, ¿sabes?". Fui débil. Pero mi debilidad nada tiene que ver con que yo esté aún aquí. Si hubiese estado aunque sea medio paso delante de Vargas… Si hubiese sabido que existía una clave mágica para ganarme mi estadía en la costa por unos días... Me pregunto qué tan placentero hubiese sido estar en la playa, habiéndome ganado la empatía de Vargas del mismo modo en el que se la habían ganado los demás: informándole que trabajaría desde la playa durante mi escapadita a la costa. | Translation - Italian
Tutti, nessuno escluso, prenderanno le ferie. Perché dunque non dovrei prendermi le mie anch’io? Ho lavorato duramente, destreggiandomi tra vari progetti di importanza vitale per lo sviluppo degli affari di cui si occupa l’azienda. Ho trascorso mesi, giorni, ore seduto alla mia scrivania, selezionando candidati, valutando richieste, assegnando progetti e assicurandomi che ciascun fornitore di servizi ricevesse i soldi senza ritardo.
Com’era possibile, quindi, che tutti gli altri stessero mettendo in valigia il costume da bagno o gli scarponi da neve mentre io sudavo copiosamente nel mio completo gessato? Proprio io che preparavo il caffè la mattina e la sera, che rispondevo a tutte le chiamate che Gutiérrez e Amingorena non volevano prendere, che svolgevo i compiti più ingrati con clienti e fornitori. E proprio per me non c’erano le ferie?
Vedevo ciascun impiegato entrare nell’ufficio di Vargas e uscire trionfante, sorridente, col pensiero alle vacanze che si era appena guadagnato. Sapevo che dovevo prendere coraggio ed entrare in quell’ufficio anch’io e strappare le mie vacanze dalle mani di chi era nella posizione di negarmele. Cosa che feci. Ed eccomi qui, con un ufficio tutto per me.
Le parole di Vargas risuonavano ancora nella mia testa: “No, Juancito. Sono desolato ma non potrai fare il tuo viaggetto sulla costa. Per il momento ho bisogno che qualcuno resti a occuparsi del forte, capisci?” Sono stato debole. Però la mia debolezza non ha nulla a che vedere col fatto che mi trovo ancora qui. Se mi fossi trovato anche mezzo passo più avanti di Vargas… Se avessi saputo che esiste una maniera facile per farmi la mia vacanza sulla costa per qualche giorno… Mi domando quanto sarebbe stato piacevole stare sulla spiaggia, se mi fossi guadagnato la simpatia di Vargas come avevano fatto tutti gli altri: promettendogli che avrei lavorato dalla spiaggia durante la mia scappata mordi e fuggi sulla costa.

Scilla... nel cuore della Costa Viola
Ci sono luoghi che per la loro storia, la loro posizione geografica o per eventi eccezionali, sono avvolti da un aura di mistero
che pervade ogni spazio. Qui Glauco, Circe, Ulisse, non sono realtà impalpabili, ma aleggiano tutt'intorno. Così ci appare Scilla
immersa tra mitologia e storia, abbarbicata su uno sperone roccioso a picco sul mare, un paese sfolgorante nel cuore della
Costa Viola con le sue case che degradano verso il mare. A dominare l'incantevole panorama l'antico Castello dei Ruffo, situato
in una posizione che sembra voler vegliare su Marina Grande e Chianalea, due quartieri "bagnati" dal mare, simili a grandi ali
adagiate ai piedi della grande rupe. Il primo con un'accogliente spiaggia, meta privilegiata di vacanze balneari e l'altro
circondato da archi, scalette e viuzze che si inerpicano e ridiscendono al mare, abitato per la maggior parte da pescatori che
ormeggiano le barche sempre lì sotto le finestre, o in secca sotto l'uscio di casa, come a voler rappresentare una autenticità
vissuta in un tutt'uno col mare.

Scilla… in the heart of Costa Viola
Some places hold onto an air of mystery that surrounds every angle, being blessed by history, beautiful location and extraordinary events. Here myths such as Glaucus, Circe and Ulysses are still very much alive. This is what we appreciate by looking at Scilla, surrounded by mythology and history, perched on a rocky cliff sheer above the sea, a picturesque town with its houses sloping down towards the sea. The ancient Ruffo Castle overlooks this enchanting scenery, set in a location as if in guard of the two neighbourhoods: Marina Grande and Chianalea, wet with sea spray, and lying as spreaded wings down at the Castle base. The Marina Grande is a seaside resort, and a major tourist attraction, while Chianalea is an intrigue of arches, steps and narrow paths which go up and down to the sea. Most of its inhabitants are fishermen who moor their boats outside their houses, sometimes right in front of the door, a sign of their lifelong bond with sea.

After qualifying as an English teacher, at the last National Contest for school teachers, sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Education, I've worked for seven years for state schools, mainly secondary level institutions, as a substitute teacher. But I've always had something for translation. Which is why I'm getting a degree in Translation, to be held in December, from the Advanced School for Interpreters and Translators of Trieste.I usually compile a specialized corpus to improve my translations. After this it is very interesting to investigate the corpus with a Corpus analysis tool, such as Wordsmith.
This technique can be of great help in confirming intuitive decisions, in verifying or rejecting decisions based on other tools such as dictionaries, in obtaining information about collocates (words that typically co-occur), in reinforcing knowledge of normal target language patterns, and in learning how to use new expressions.
