A importância da eleição decorre do significado e perspectivas que ela encerra.
Significado pela questão rácica, que nunca deixou de estar presente desde a escolha interna do Partido Democrata, sobretudo. Diz-se que é o primeiro presidente negro do país, provando-se que a cor da pele importa mais a todos os não racistas do que eles admitem. Em bom rigor Obama é tão negro quanto branco – é mestiço, mas estão a apagar-lhe os genes maternos.
Percebe-se assim como esse problema continua mal resolvido entre alguns.
Não terá sido por isso, no entanto, que Obama foi eleito. Apenas uma pequena minoria terá votado nele por ter sangue negro. A maioria votou, inequivocamente, na sua mensagem, que é essencialmente de mudança.
Para se saber quão longe onde essas mudanças irão vai ser preciso esperar por um abrandamento da crise que se abateu sobre a economia (sobretudo) ocidental e, mais ainda, por um eventual segundo mandato.
Apesar das limitações que estes dois factores vão impor ao novo poder nos Estados Unidos há coisas que já mudaram – e ainda falta mais de um mês para que Obama se mude para a Casa Branca.

The fact of the week (and the fact of the year at least) was the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States.
The importance of his election comes from the significance and perspectives brought about by the election itself.
It is significant because the race factor has always been present, especially after the internal elections within the Democratic Party. It’s been said that he is the first black President of the country, proving that the colour of the skin is more important to all those non-racists than they actually admit. In true reality, Obama is as white as he is black - he is of mixed race, but his maternal genes are showing up.
That being so it is understandable how this problem continues not to sit easy with some people.
But that wasn’t the reason why he’s been elected. A mere minority voted for him because of his black roots. The majority voted unequivocally for his message, essentially calling for change.
To know how far these changes might go, we will need to wait for a slowing down of the crisis which has engulfed (especially) the western economy and, even more, for his eventual second term in office.
Despite the limitations which these two factors will impose on the new power in the United States, there are things which have changed already - and Obama is only one month away from moving into the White House.
