This invention relates to inhibition of alpfav integrins, especially alfa v beta6 integrins, by the specific non-peptidic antagonist, EMD 409849, 3-(3-Benzyloxy-2-(5-(pyridin-2-ylamino)pentanoylamino)propanoylamino)-3-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-proprionic acid, that downregulates fibrogenesis by inhibiting cell migration and production of pro-fibrogenic (e.g., collagens, TIMP-1) e cytokines (e.g., CTGF, TGF beta1, 2) by activated hepatic stellate cells, activated myofibroblasts and fibroblasts activated epithelia and endothelia.
