These days, when attacks against the ‘excesses’ of the press abound, we should do well to remember the saying that, in modern day Spain, the worst aspect of the press is not the bad press but rather how bad the good press is – or how scarce it is. To put it another way, in all countries around us there are unruly, lower-brow or gutter publications which commit excesses, harass people, invent or exaggerate ‘scandals’, slander and libel in equal measures and generally flout the law or abuse their power. They exist in France, Germany, the USA and other nearby and Spanish-speaking countries. |
